Though a lot of glasses design for women are proposed and displayed in a shop recently, it is difficult for a customer to select them. For the purpose, the fundamental research on what kind of glasses design is liked from a viewpoint of a customer is thought to be required. Then, the purpose of this research would analyze about the glasses design liked by women.As the method of research, image words contributed to the attitude of liking the glasses design were calculated by multiply regression analysis, and cognitive parts (form elements) affected to each image word of the glasses design were extracted by rough sets. Before the calculation, these image words and cognitive parts were extracted by the evaluation grid method. Samples of seventy-one kinds of glasses were evaluated into five steps about each image word on the subject of twenty women. Four image words “foppish (fashionable), pretty, decent, intellectual”in twelve contributed to liking were calculated using the data mentioned above. Next, the relationship between four images and cognitive parts was extracted based on the decision class of Rough sets (the non-linear technique of the ability to avoid of Multicollinearity) using the data of each image word. From the result, the hierarchical relation from the attitude to cognitive parts about the preference has been clarified.Furthermore, the verification experiment of the result of the hierarchical relation was conducted on the subject of a designer working a design office, who proposed three design sketches reflecting the whole result of the attitude and emphasized pretty and intellectual in it with some useful comments to improve the method.

This research attempts to construct the automated system of clothes pattern design directly from the three-dimensional data of the body to indicate the trend of creating clothes pattern design in future. In this report, firstly I attempt to obtain unfolded plans to fit the body directly from cross sectional figures using the three-dimensional data. Secondly, the study examines the methods of obtaining the width of each pieces necessary for making pattern on unfolded plan by changing some focuses along the division lines. This experiment and research show the following results. Firstly, the width of fit type torso prototype is based on the length of the outside envelopment, picking up the utmost projection points from the upper to the lower half of the body. Secondly, at least four division lines are needed in order to make the torso prototype. Thirdly, amount of darts appear mostly at axillaries posterior for the torso prototype regardless of focus and formed area. Amount of darts on the division lines, changes to a large extent, depending on the place of focuses rather than the way texture runs. But amount of darts by human sense and that of using temporal focal point correspond largely to others. In this way, the temporal focal point is likely to be effective.

We examined impressions and attentional attractiveness of visual cues on an information display. In the first experiment, we found three factors (‘evaluation’, ‘potency & activity’, and ‘novelty’) about impressions on visual cues and three type of cues without negative impressions could be selected based on ‘evaluation’ factor. We suggested that flashing cue and zooming cue do not give negative impressions and were effective for attracting people's attention in the cued area (Masakura, et al., 2005). ‘Evaluation’ and ‘potency & activity’ factor scores of these two cues were positive and we pointed out a relationship between attentional attractiveness of cues and impression on them. In the second experiment, we found that the ‘evaluation’ and ‘novelty’ factors were related to the latency of eye movements to the cued area and the ‘novelty’ factor was related to the duration of fixation in that area. It was revealed that the latency of eye movement was short when ‘evaluation’ and ‘novelty’ factor scores for a cue were low, and the duration of fixation was long when ‘novelty’ factor score for a cue was low. The cue which attracts fixation early could give negative impressions.

The purpose of this study is to clarify the mechanism of smiles by measuring facial muscle activities and facial surface transformation. We made it possible that the strength of the smile was fixed the same by using the biofeedback technique. And facial muscle activities that caused a change on skin surface were measured by surface electromyography and the physiological mechanism of the smile was examined. It became clear that the muscle activities of the risorius and depressor labii inferioris had a significant effect on the formation of the smiling faces. We confirmed that a change of the eye that is the symbol of the smile depended on the compression of the skin by the picture analysis of the face. The internal and external relations to make the characteristics of the smile were explained.

Attitudes involved in shoe selection and the present situation of shoe comfort were investigated using the questionnaire method. A questionnaire survey was conducted in 2002 of 181 female university students (18-20 years). Questionnaire items asked about 3 items: 1) shoes usually worn; 2) shoes on the market; and 3) troubles noted when wearing own shoes. Specific questions were identical to those used in a questionnaire survey for elderly women conducted in 1997. Foot length and foot girth were measured at the same time for 54 of these 181 subjects. The mean foot girth of young women was significantly smaller than that of elderly women, and the suitable foot girth size was D or narrower in 52% of subjects. Many young women wore heeled shoes with ball girth larger than their foot girths. Young women experienced difficulties with shoe comfort mainly in the ball and plantar arch, which are different from those experienced by elderly women. One of the reasons for shoe discomfort in young women may be feet sliding forward on the shank curve of shoes due to wearing shoes with ball girth too large for their feet. To improve shoe comfort, consumers need to recognize their own foot girth size, and select shoes of suitable size. Since shoes with narrower than average foot girth size are few at present, shoe comfort would be improved by increasing the supply of narrower shoes on the market.

A human being laughs in every day life when happy, and a facial expression changes unconsciously. It is thought that the facial expression has close relation to feelings and Kansei. The facial expression is more intelligibly than the expression by word, and can convey a delicate nuance when introducing feelings. Intention communication with a different foreigner is possible by a facial expression and a gesture. In this way, the role that a facial expression serves as by communication is very big. The aim of this study is to control a mind state by the intentionally modified facial expression. The final aim is the application to a field of the medical welfare. In this study, measuring the behavior of each muscle of a face using electromyogram in order to evaluate the expression quantitatively elucidates the mechanism of a facial expression. Six facial expressions is paid attention. When a human being made a facial expression intentionally, it is thought that a mind state changes by the facial expression. For example, it is said that a mind state is stable unconsciously when making a smile intentionally. On the other hand, it is thought that a mind state becomes unstable when a partner makes a facial expression of anger. In this way it is thought that a mind state is closely related to a facial expression, but there are many subjects that have not been elucidated. So the relation of a facial expression and a mind state is cleared from bio-information such as electromyogram or brain waves as an engineering approach and will be applied to the medical welfare.

This paper focuses attention on the concepts used in the developments of various therapeutic robots. Websites related to these concepts were statistically analyzed from the standpoint of Kansei Engineering. Results of this analysis highlighted important keywords employed in relevant Websites that indicate the concepts of the developments. Another analysis using dual scaling also revealed the position of each therapeutic robot. This study also clarified transitions of the weights of the employed keywords and the robot's positions. This new knowledge will contribute to suggesting trends in the therapeutic robots of the next generation.

Agood movie is a cu ltural creation by excellent staffs completing their wisdom. The story, conversation, and image s of such a movie draw the interest of many viewers. Most of the conversation is used actually every day. In thispaper, we investigated several screenplays o f famous American movies. In short, frequency characteristics of character - and word-appearance were investigated using a program constructed by C++. These characteristics were approximated by an exponential function: [y=c·exp(-bx)]. Furthermore, we ca lculated the percentage of American basic vocabulary to obtain the difficulty -level as well as the K-characteristic of each material. As a result, it was clearly shown that the values of coefficients c and b for the screenplays have the same tendency as j ournalism and they are difficult to read than interviews, CNN news and inaugural addresses.

As the computers are ubiquitous, the linguistic communication by the digital media (e.g. e-mail) has become very popular. However, the simple text doesn't express our emotion, so it is importanto establish the emotional font generation support system that can estimate the user's emotion from sentences and generate the suitable fonts dynamically. Firstly we pointed out that the font shape, the emotion andKanseihad the close relation and influenced each other. Secondly we have deduced the basic elements of the font shape, the emotion andKanseiby categorizing the large number of words that appear in the articles of the font design. As the result we had 32 elements for the emotion, 34 forKanseiKansei and 56 for the font shape. Finally we conducted the experiment to know the relation among them. The result showed that the emotion andKanseigave the influence on the font shape independently in some cases and dependently in the other cases. We have successfully deduced several rules to generate the font shape form the specified emotion andKansei.

The fantastic light of firefly, which keeps fascinating the heart of Japanese from ancient time, and the ecosystem, are taken up as one of cure fields being benefit from the nature. In this study, from the viewpoints of semantic differentials and engineering, we focused on the light of firefly, and we examined whether they cause the human spirit any effects or not. It was possible to find for welfare utilizations that there is the high possibility that a sufficient cure effect exists in the light emission pattern of firefly and the ecosystem. This research is the first basic trial turned to the creation of cure space for hospices and welfare facilities, which utilize the firefly and the mini ecosystem artificially modeled in an enclosure.

In this paper, we propose a framework of the Kansei (sensibility) system for the artificial Kansei that is an useful mapping into the two-dimensional plane with four sectors. It is shown that our main idea comes from the correspondence between the intelligent system and the Kansei system, which is the intelligent system in general has two main aspects of the natural intelligence and the artificial intelligence, so that it goes without saying that the Kansei system will also have the two aspects, the natural Kansei and the artificial Kansei lying on the Y-axis (the vertical). In the proposed plane of the Kansei framework, the perception (or cognition) and the creation are on X-axis (the horizontal), so that it has the four sectors. Our framework for the Kansei system will provide a new place for discussions, so the concrete directions for the further researcheswill also be suggested in the four sectors.

We investigated the relationship between aesthetics and leg shape using Japanese female undergraduates from the viewpoint of the measurement of leg dimension using leg images, the statistical classification of leg shape, and the visual impression survey of subject's legs. Leg shape was classified into an aesthetic leg group and an ordinary leg group, and both were further classified into three sub-groups. Based on the analysis of these groups, the concept of aesthetic leg was defined, and an empirical f ormula for estimating leg aesthetics objectively and numerically was derived.

We aim to select several pairs of kansei words for use in a kansei-based music retrieval system. In order to evaluate kansei for music, we collected 530 kansei words from music magazines and a related work. Forty pairs of kansei words were selected out of them according to the results of 2 questionnaires. Using the those pairs, we conducted an evaluation test in which 76 subjects listened to 12 pieces of instrumental music through stereo speakers, and they rated the degree of their impression on each piece based on the 7-level semantic differential method. Factor analysis revealed that the psychological space of impressions was composed of 8 factors: There were uplift, mosso and so on. Next, we conducted simulation of retrieving. It was shown that many subjects often used 8 pair of kansei words for system input. Finally, we selected 19 pairs of kansei words, which were important to build a kansei-based music retrieval system

Shading is one of the typical depth cues generally used in letter illustrations and designs. Among the various kinds of shading directions, we humans are most familiar with shading in the right-bottom direction. In the present study, we investigated the perceptual effects of the shading directions using letters of alphabets as stimuli. In Experiment 1, we used 26 capital letters and 4 geometric figures in the six shading directions, which means that there were 180 conditions (i. e., (26 letters +4 figures) ×6 shading directions). For each condition, we measured the reaction times for perceiving the stimulus. The results indicated that it takes longer for subjects to recognize simple letters and figures. In Experiment 2, we focused on preferences and readabilities of the stimuli, using eight capital letters in four shading conditions. As the results, we found that the right bottom shading was evaluated as the highest (i. e., the most beautiful, positive, and readable). It is plausible that the results are related to our familiarities with the right bottom shading.

In this paper, we propose a behavior generation model for entertainment robot whose behavior seems to be living. Oneproblem of common entertainment robots is hard to generate various behaviors, because behaviors of the robots are generally madeby simple rule-based algorithms. The problem causes that the simplicity of the movement of the robot lets a user get tired soon. Inthis paper, we propose a behavior generation model based on principles of respondent conditioning and operant conditioning inbehavior analysis. The model has desire parameters and neural network for choosing a behavior. The desire parameters usually riseslowly and decrease by a specific behavior. Because the neural network learns the behavior decreasing more desire parameters, themodel can select spontaneously behavior. The result of behavior generation simulation shows the model has the feature of theirconditionings.

This study aims to clarify the semantic processing mechanism of pictures, in which pictures and their meanings are not the same. Meanings are sent out from pictures using all conceptual extension mechanisms such as synecdoche, metonymy and metaphor. Time required to judge the relationship between picture and meaning depends on these types of figures of speech. This mechanism was examined in relation to two strategies, word association and perceptual simulation, which were employed to determine the relationship between picture and meaning. It was assumed that the "mechanism for recognition of figures of speech"would determine the strategy, and these strategies would generate differences in reaction time. We verified this hypothesis through two tasks, by changing variable conditions. As a result, it was found that at least synecdoche and metonymy could be treated as specific recognition mechanisms for which word association and perceptual simulation were suitable in meaning processing.

Abstract: Rules of nonverbal behavior that should be possessed by an anthropomorphic robot in order to be liked and loved by users were investigated from the perspective of ‘reciprocity of liking’ and ‘social comparison, ’ which are socio-psychological t endencies common to all humans. This study focused on the approach behavior of the robot towards a user, one of the simplest nonverbal behaviors indicative of liking. In Experiment 1, participants (n=36) performed a sham task near three small robots. Eachrobot was controlled to perform one of three activities: approach, semi-approach and random movement. Participants evaluated preand post task liking for each robot. The result indicated no difference in liking ratings. In Experiment 2, 22-pairs of participantsperformed the identical task and evaluation as in Experiment 1 in the presence a robot that selectively approached one member of thedyad and another robot that moved randomly. Evaluation of liking by the participants indicated that participants who wereapproached liked the robot and had greater expectation of attachment. However the participants who were not approached evaluatedthe robot negatively. These results suggest that a social comparison process is involved in the evaluation of liking and attachment forrobots.

In this paper, we quantitatively analyze the KANSEI of human from many other angles for the purpose of generating the motion algorithm for a robothat does not tire a human. A red ball and a blue ball are displayed on a simulation screen. A person moves the red ball with a mouse and a computer moves the blue one. By using this model, first, we examine the relationship between the complexity and the boredom. The varieties of the complexity are motion, size, color, tone and shape. Secondly, we analyze actions produced naturally in interhuman interaction using two PCs connected by a network. Thirdly, we examine the impression that the motion of the robot gives to the human by SD technique.
