According to previous studies, highly understandable painting is generally associated with favorable evaluations. This study investigated the contribution of understandability to the combination effect of painting and frame. Using eight combinations, the degrees of harmony and impression (evaluation, activity) were rated. It was found that when a highly understandable painting was combined with a regular and symmetrical frame, the degree of harmony and evaluation were higher than if the painting was combined with an irregular and complex frame. In contrast, a poorly understandable painting harmonized with both types of frames and their evaluation only slightly differed. The results indicated that the aesthetic appreciation of art is affected by the frame and that a highly understandable painting is harmonized only in a regular and symmetrical frame that does not impinge on the prototypicality of the painting.

Visual attractiveness has significant effects on our social life. People make up one's appearance by clothing, wearing accessories, applying cosmetics, hair-style and hair-color, etc., to convey certain impressions including attractiveness to others. In this study, we examined (a) how the suitability between face and hair color (i.e., hair-color matching) would be evaluated by oneself and by others and (b) how the hair-color matching would interact with perceived attractiveness. We found that 1) different criteria were used for hair-color matching between self-evaluation and evaluation by others, and 2) a wider range of hair-colors matched to the face, when the face was evaluated as more attractive and/or the perceived facial makeup was more. These results suggest that the evaluation of hair-color suitability might differ in self-evaluation and in evaluation by others, and suitability of hair-color has a certain interaction with perceived facial attractiveness. Possible implications are also discussed.

We investigated the memory task performance and the central nervous activity after smelling two kinds of pan-fired Japanese green tea to examine their physical and psychological effects. Twenty eight subjects participated in this study. We used Koushun and Kouju for test samples, which were made by different manufacturing processes. After smelling each odor sample, a memory task and an arithmetic task were used to test mental stress. Electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded before and after smelling the test samples, and EEG activity was estimated for 4 frequency bands (alpha 1, alpha 2, beta 1 and beta 2). The profiles of mood states (POMS) and the visual analog scale (VAS) after mental stress task were completed for subjective assessments. The results showed that the odor of Kouju may induce a positive emotion. It may also affect the EEG band power of beta 1 at right frontal region and improve memory task performance.

Families of t-norm based histogram intersections and a corresponding content-based image retrieval system are proposed. It is shown that the retrieval performance varies depending on the semantic category of the image and the usage of different t-norms results in a performance increase. Computational costs are determined as both the complexity and the average of 106 calculation times needed to calculate each similarity on a personal computer. To evaluate retrieval performance, precision and recall on the Corel image databases are determined, and Friedman test and Scheffe′s method are used to find difference between similarity measures. The results suggest that the proposals have the best average Friedman ranks in some categories (implying improved precision) having only 125 ms overhead when compared to the basic histogram intersection. Due to observed performance of families of t-norm based histogram intersection, system performing boosting of such norms could increase the overall accuracy in content-based image retrieval.

We aim to select several pairs of kansei words for use in a kansei-based music retrieval system. In order to evaluate kansei for music, we collected 530 kansei words from music magazines and a related work. Forty pairs of kansei words were selected out of them according to the results of 2 questionnaires. Using the those pairs, we conducted an evaluation test in which 76 subjects listened to 12 pieces of instrumental music through stereo speakers, and they rated the degree of their impression on each piece based on the 7-level semantic differential method. Factor analysis revealed that the psychological space of impressions was composed of 8 factors: There were uplift, mosso and so on. Next, we conducted simulation of retrieving. It was shown that many subjects often used 8 pair of kansei words for system input. Finally, we selected 19 pairs of kansei words, which were important to build a kansei-based music retrieval system

Shading is one of the typical depth cues generally used in letter illustrations and designs. Among the various kinds of shading directions, we humans are most familiar with shading in the right-bottom direction. In the present study, we investigated the perceptual effects of the shading directions using letters of alphabets as stimuli. In Experiment 1, we used 26 capital letters and 4 geometric figures in the six shading directions, which means that there were 180 conditions (i. e., (26 letters +4 figures) ×6 shading directions). For each condition, we measured the reaction times for perceiving the stimulus. The results indicated that it takes longer for subjects to recognize simple letters and figures. In Experiment 2, we focused on preferences and readabilities of the stimuli, using eight capital letters in four shading conditions. As the results, we found that the right bottom shading was evaluated as the highest (i. e., the most beautiful, positive, and readable). It is plausible that the results are related to our familiarities with the right bottom shading.

This paper relates audio features based on fluctuation of music with sensibility evaluation about music as a component technology for an automatic song select system demanded on human sensibility evaluation. When people listen to music, they select a song considering both their own feelings at the time and sensibility evaluation about the song. We consider that sensibility evaluations of songs are influenced by the features based on fluctuation about both volume and pitch of the songs. Thus, we focus on features of fluctuation that contain a dynamic idea on music, and extract thirty six features of fluctuation about both volume and pitch from each songs using Fast Fourier Transform. On the other, we prepare a subjective experiment for plural songs using Semantic Differential method, and obtain the sensibility evaluation about each song. Then, we study the relationships between extracted features and sensibility evaluation about the songs with multiple discriminant analysis. As a result, high accurate discriminant hit-rates and low discriminant error are shown, therefore we suggest that audio features based on fluctuation of songs influence sensibility evaluation about the songs. Furthermore, we confirm the especial parameters related with sensibility evaluation about music while considering canonical variates which construct discriminant spaces.

In this paper, we propose a behavior generation model for entertainment robot whose behavior seems to be living. Oneproblem of common entertainment robots is hard to generate various behaviors, because behaviors of the robots are generally madeby simple rule-based algorithms. The problem causes that the simplicity of the movement of the robot lets a user get tired soon. Inthis paper, we propose a behavior generation model based on principles of respondent conditioning and operant conditioning inbehavior analysis. The model has desire parameters and neural network for choosing a behavior. The desire parameters usually riseslowly and decrease by a specific behavior. Because the neural network learns the behavior decreasing more desire parameters, themodel can select spontaneously behavior. The result of behavior generation simulation shows the model has the feature of theirconditionings.

This study aims to suggest improvements in the functionality and comfort of hygiene masks. Our preliminary study surveyed users' actual experiences of wearing masks from individual sensory, cognitive, and holistic perspectives. We surveyed 1519 Japanese university students, obtaining information on whether they wore masks, the purpose of the mask, and if there were any problems with wearing masks. We studied reported problems versus intended use by calculating the co-occurrence relationship. The aggregated results showed that women wore masks more frequently than men, and the most common reasons for wearing them were to guard against influenza and the common cold. Reported problems, such as discomfort due to “Humidity”, were cited by both men and women. Using a text mining approach, we identified that this awareness of problems brought on a “feeling of distraction”. Our findings will aid in the design and development of less unpleasant and more practical masks.

This paper is an attempt to describe the causality phenomenon of “Kansei Information” and its affect on buying behavior. We are focusing on information taken in through the five senses and processed within the brain, causing a positive affect, and we refer to this as “Kansei Information”. And since the year 2000, throughout Japan, in various different industries, we have been researching the phenomenon of “Kansei Information” and its affect on buying behavior. Based on our observations of this phenomenon and the marketing and sales activity it results in, we are researching possibility to make a model that relies on the affects of “Kansei Information” as the main component. In this paper we present “Kansei information/Buying behavior model”. And we examine this model by focusing on non-planning purchases in the supermarket. We will also present experiment of actual store fronts which are actually using “Kansei Information” to affect buying behavior. In this case the sales of the product, which had been around 20 pieces a month in previous years, dramatically improved and reached 280 pieces in the first month. Six months afterwards, grew constantly to reach 1,000 pieces a month. And, we examine the possibility of making the simulation model based on this outcome of an experiment.

We investigated the effects of pre-preferences for CG characters (avatar), gender of CG characters, exposure frequency, and the concordance between CG characters and the background on the impression formed about CG characters. During 8 sessions, 36 participants were shown a succession of CG characters presented against concordant or discordant backgrounds. During sessions 1, 3, 5, and 7, participants evaluated each CG character in terms of post-preference, intelligence, and reliability using a 7-point scale. Session 8 involved a delay condition. The results showed that post-preference evaluation scores in the high pre-preference condition were associated with better first impressions of CG characters, and increased with exposure frequency. However, background conformity influenced the impressions of CG characters when pre-preferences were medium or low. In addition, post-preference and reliability evaluation scores were higher for female than male characters.

Although previous studies have examined what kind of object arrangement could give observer beautiful impression, they have not achieved agreement. While some studies found observers' preference for the arrangements whose centroids were congruent with the center of the picture frame, the other studies found the observers' preference for the arrangement whose centroids were in the right side in the frame. The main purpose of this study is to solve this disagreement among previous studies. We conducted three experiments in which concreteness of the picture was manipulated, and observers rated their impression for the pictures with different centroid position. We used black circles (Experiment 1), concrete objects on white background (Experiment 2), and concrete objects on backgrounds of natural scenes (Experiment 3). Only in Experiment 3, we found that observers consistently preferred for the pictures whose centroid of the arrangement was in right side. Our results indicate that concreteness of the pictures caused the biased preferencefor the right side of the pictures.

Although many studies have examined eye movements in reading, it is unclear what factors separate fast readers from slow readers. Some studies suggest that effective visual field size should be a dominant factor. However, a direct link between reading speed and effective visual field is under controversial. To clarify this issue, we investigated eye movements in reading in conjunction with speed reading training. Four participants (approx. 600 letters per minute in Japanese) improved thier reading speed through training for half an hour per day for 30 days. Reading performance of Japanese editorial articles was recorded every five days of training by the gaze-contingent window method. In three participants, effective visual field size did not increase in the same manner as reading speed which increased up to 1000 lpm. Instead, we found that in those three participants mean saccadic length became longer due to the reduction of short and unsystematic saccades. On the contrary, one participant showed high correlation between effective visual field and reading speed. Our results suggest that not only the size of the effective visual field but also efficiency of comprehension at a single gaze may be important factors for reading speed. The qualitative discrepancy among individuals suggests the existence of multiple strategies for fast reading.

This paper aims to consider the environmental proposition regarding the change from the third grader to the fourth grader concerning life environments. The method can be categorized into two stages, the first being the conduction of the questionnaire and workshop, organized as follows “attempt to research”, “attempt to encode”, “attempt to survey”, “attempt to propose” and “attempt to criticize”, the second being the comparison of the tendency about the result data. According to the analysis, when a school year changes from the third into the fourth grader, the child tends to recognize the allover space similar to a bird's eye view and tends to estimate it objectively. However, there is no difference about icons' type in the proposal phase, and the five senses are maintained.

Abstract: Rules of nonverbal behavior that should be possessed by an anthropomorphic robot in order to be liked and loved by users were investigated from the perspective of ‘reciprocity of liking’ and ‘social comparison, ’ which are socio-psychological t endencies common to all humans. This study focused on the approach behavior of the robot towards a user, one of the simplest nonverbal behaviors indicative of liking. In Experiment 1, participants (n=36) performed a sham task near three small robots. Eachrobot was controlled to perform one of three activities: approach, semi-approach and random movement. Participants evaluated preand post task liking for each robot. The result indicated no difference in liking ratings. In Experiment 2, 22-pairs of participantsperformed the identical task and evaluation as in Experiment 1 in the presence a robot that selectively approached one member of thedyad and another robot that moved randomly. Evaluation of liking by the participants indicated that participants who wereapproached liked the robot and had greater expectation of attachment. However the participants who were not approached evaluatedthe robot negatively. These results suggest that a social comparison process is involved in the evaluation of liking and attachment forrobots.

In this paper, we quantitatively analyze the KANSEI of human from many other angles for the purpose of generating the motion algorithm for a robothat does not tire a human. A red ball and a blue ball are displayed on a simulation screen. A person moves the red ball with a mouse and a computer moves the blue one. By using this model, first, we examine the relationship between the complexity and the boredom. The varieties of the complexity are motion, size, color, tone and shape. Secondly, we analyze actions produced naturally in interhuman interaction using two PCs connected by a network. Thirdly, we examine the impression that the motion of the robot gives to the human by SD technique.
