We demonstrate monthly changes in the distribution of a population of the mudskipper Periophthalmus modestus inhabiting a mud bank of the Fukushoe River, flowing into the Ariake Sea, Japan. During the reproductive season from June to midAugust, fish density observed on the surface during lowest spring tide decreased from the most landward quadrats toward the river channel, particularly where the bank inclination was steep (within 30 m from the water’s edge). Males accounted for over 90% of individuals collected at the most landward sampling plot, 67 to 15% at the next three plots, and 0% at the most riverward plot, where only females were collected. During the non-reproductive season from September to November, fish density also decreased toward the river channel, with no fish confirmed at the river’s edge. Although the percentage of males decreased from landward to riverward plots, the trend was less marked than during the reproductive season. Monthly sampling of fish on riprap at the time of highest spring tide showed females to be dominant (70–90% of total) from May to July, with juveniles appearing in July and becoming dominant (70–80%) in August to October. No fish occurred on the riprap from November to the end of January. These findings suggest that many females migrate with the tide for feeding at the water’s edge, thereby achieving rapid ovarian development, whereas mature males remain near their territory and burrows. Reproductive burrows were most abundant in the area of stable daily periods of submersion and emersion (300 min and 400–500 min, respectively) throughout the tidal cycle, suggesting that a regular cycle of inundation and emersion is important for the successful reproduction of the species.

福井藩で最初の海外留学生・日下部太郎と、アメリカ・ラトガース大学で彼の2年年上の友人として親交を深めたウィリアム・エリオット・グリフィス。日下部は異国で病魔に倒れて客死するも、その縁で、グリフィスは理化学の教師として福井藩から招かれ、藩校「明新館」にて教育に尽力することとなる。これらを描いたのが「よみがえる心のかけ橋」福井市立郷土歴史館発行(1982.4)であり、本稿は、それをシナリオ化したものである。(未発表)

With the prefectural governments' aid of the purchase, the Division of Pharmacognosy, Phytochemistry and Narcotics, National Institute of Health Sciences (NIHS) successively has surveyed illegal constituents in health food products implicitly advertizing tonic or slimming effect since the fiscal year of 2002 (slimming type) or 2003 (tonic type). The average numbers of the analyzed products per year are about 100 (slimming type) and 150 (tonic type), respectively. We also continuously distribute standards of authentic samples of several illegal components such as N-nitrosofenfluramine (NFF) and sildenafil (SIL) to prefectural institutes and the average gross number per year is about 140. In the case of slimming type, the fact that the products containing NFF were widely sold in Japanese markets in 2002 is well known. In addition, phenolphthalein, fenfluramine, sibtramine, desdimethylsibtramine, orlistat, mazindol, Rhubarb, Senna Leaf, etc. have been found as illegal constituents. In the tonic type products, we have identified more than 20 synthetic compounds relating to the erectile dysfunction (ED) treatment drugs, SIL, vardenafil and tadalafil (TDF). Since 2005, their synthetic intermediates and the patented but non-approved PDE5 inhibitors also have been found. It should be noted that TDF was found in the shells of capsule in 2009 and that mutaprodenafil was found as pro-drug type illegal component in 2010. In this report identification method of these illegal constituents is briefly described and then analytical trend in this decade is reviewed.
