Many mothers have considerable anxiety about pregnancy, childbirth, and childcare. For such mothers, searching for information on the Internet is an effective means of dissolving their anxieties. We consider the problem of estimating, for each search word, a distribution of search dates with respect to children’s birth dates. Most of the empirical distributions have unimodal or bimodal shapes, and some of them are asymmetric about extremal points and rise or fall sharply. We propose nonparametric estimation methods based on mathematical optimization models for such probability distributions. Our unimodal and bimodal optimization models automatically estimate the optimal extremal points and can be extended to multimodal distributions. These models are formulated as mixed-integer convex quadratic optimization problems, which can be solved exactly using optimization software. Experimental results using real-world and synthetic datasets demonstrate that our methods are effective by comparison to conventional moving average and kernel estimation methods.

知識が独創的な智恵や人格の形成にまで発展するようにするには,知識を体系化して理解することが重要である。また,体系化された知識が理解しやすいように,文章を図表化してビジュアル化することで理解しやすくなる。このことから,知識を体系化してビジュアル化した教育の方法は,全体像の把握ができて理論の構築や問題点の抽出がしやすく,学問と実践の一致が容易である。この教育方法を工学教育に応用することにより,個性に応じた独創性や全体性および心豊かな人格形成を目指した人材の育成が可能である。

High speed atomic force microscopy (HS-AFM) is, in principle, capable of yielding nanometer level detail about the surface of static structures. However, for highly dynamic samples HS-AFM may struggle with the correct feature assignment both within and between frames. Feature assignment in HS-AFM is dependent on (i) the intrinsic sampling rate, and (ii) the rate of internal redistribution of the sample. Whilst the first quantity (the sampling rate) is defined by the device parameters, the second quantity is frequently unknown, and is often the desired target of the measurement. This work examines how, even in the absence of gross cell morphological change, the rapid dynamics of living cell membranes, may impose an upper spatial limit to the frame-to-frame assignment of cell micro-topography and other related properties (such as local elasticity) whose motion may be described stochastically. Such a practical maximum may prove useful in the setup of HS-AFM experiments involving dynamic surfaces thereby facilitating selection of the most parsimonious relationship between observation size, image pixilation and sampling rates. To assist with performing the described calculations a graphical user interface-based software package called HS-AFM UGOKU is made freely available.

The submodular function maximization is an attractive optimization model that appears in many real applications. Although a variety of greedy algorithms quickly find good feasible solutions for many instances while guaranteeing (1−1/e)-approximation ratio, we still encounter many real applications that ask optimal or better solutions within reasonable computation time. In this paper, we present an efficient branch-and-cut algorithm for the non-decreasing submodular function maximization problem based on its binary integer programming (BIP) formulation with an exponential number of constraints. Nemhauser and Wolsey developed an exact algorithm called the constraint generation algorithm that starts from a reduced BIP problem with a small subset of constraints and repeats solving a reduced BIP problem while adding a new constraint at each iteration. However, their algorithm is still computationally expensive due to many reduced BIP problems to be solved. To overcome this, we propose an improved constraint generation algorithm to add a promising set of constraints at each iteration. We incorporate it into a branch-and-cut algorithm to attain good upper bounds while solving a smaller number of reduced BIP problems. According to computational results for well-known benchmark instances, our algorithm achieves better performance than the state-of-the-art exact algorithms.

We developed fifty-five models for predicting the number of ambulance transport due to heatstroke (hereafter referred to as the number of patients with heatstroke) on the next day in Tokyo, using different combinations of eleven explanatory variables sets and five methods (three statistical models and two machine learning) for 10 years (2010-2019). The root mean square error (RMSE) for the number of heatstroke patients was minimal when the best model was developed by combining six explanatory variables (temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, solar radiation, number of days since June 1, and the number of patients with heatstroke on the previous day) and the generalized additive model. The best model remarkably improved prediction by 52.1 % compared to a widely used model, which primarily utilizes temperature as an explanatory variable and the generalized linear model as a method. Further analysis investigating the contribution of the explanatory variables and method to the prediction showed that RMSE was reduced by 49.7 % using the above six explanatory variables compared to using the only temperature and by 14.6 % using the generalized additive model compared to using the generalized linear model.

採血副作用における血管迷走神経反応(VVR)は,その低減化に向けて様々な防止策が講じられている.VVRの発症機転はよく解明されていないが,不安や痛み等の精神的な要因,循環血液量の減少による生理学的要因などが推定されている.今回我々は循環血液量の減少を伴わない採血前検査で発生するVVRに焦点をあて,精神的な要因により発症するVVRの特徴について検討した.本採血前のVVRを2群(検査前群と検査後群)に分類し,本採血以降のVVRと比較検討した.その結果,本採血前のVVRでは,体格が小柄で比較的やせ気味の10代の若年男性が多く含まれ,女性では3人に1人は体重50kg未満という特徴が見られた.これらのVVRでは重症例も多くあり軽視すべきではなく,採血基準を体重50kg以上に制限することで女性のVVRは減少すると推定される.
