「図書館型」の書店の代表格と見なされてきたジュンク堂書店に勤務する筆者が,何ゆえに図書館を利用してきたか,図書館に対していかなる提言をなしてきたか?前半部で,ジュンク堂書店のこれまでの展開の中で目指された理念とその実践を紹介し,後半部で,図書館を利用する理由,図書館に対する提言を述べながら,「本と人の出会いの場」としての書店と図書館の役割分担,連携の可能性について考えたいと思う。一読者として本の魅力,読書体験のもつ魅力を体験してきたからこそ,書店,図書館という枠を乗り越えて,多様な「本と人の出会いの場」を形成していきたいという筆者の思いが,何よりの出発点である。

ナミハダニが寄主葉の上面を産卵場所として利用しないことは,風雨や太陽光紫外線による卵への悪影響を回避するための適応だと考えられている.一方で葉面の表裏における栄養条件の違い,および上下の葉面において虫体に掛かる重力方向の違いが,ナミハダニの適応度に与える影響は十分に検討されていなかった.本研究ではインゲンマメのリーフディスク(単一葉面)を用い,その表裏および上下がナミハダニの産卵数に与える影響を評価した.葉表では葉裏よりも,下面では上面よりもそれぞれ産卵数が増加する傾向が支持された.しかし「葉表かつ上面」と「葉裏かつ下面」のリーフディスク間では,これら2因子の影響が打ち消し合い産卵数は拮抗した.すなわち葉面の栄養条件ないし重力方向について,単独でのボトムアップ効果は認められるものの,ナミハダニがインゲンマメ葉の上面(葉表)に卵を産まない理由にはならないと考えられた.

We present a full range handheld probe type spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) method. Here, the sample arm is composed of a tilted fiber-optic cantilever scanner; thus, the phase shift concurrently occurs while sample scanning. With the phase shift, we could achieve a full range complex-conjugate-free OCT image with no additional phase shifters in the reference arm. To realize this technique, a magnetically actuated probe was adopted. Full range SD-OCT images of a pearl, human fingernail, and human tooth were subsequently obtained using this suggested probe. The scanning range and acquisition speed were 3 mm and 20 frames/s, respectively.

PurposeTo investigate a relationship between birefringence and elasticity of porcine sclera ex vivo using polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT).MethodsElastic parameters and birefringence of 19 porcine eyes were measured. Four pieces of scleral strips which were parallel to the limbus, with a width of 4 mm, were dissected from the optic nerve head to the temporal side of each porcine eye. Birefringence of the sclera was measured with a prototype PS-OCT. The strain and force were measured with a uniaxial material tester as the sample was stretched with a speed of 1.8 mm/min after preconditioning. A derivative of the exponentially-fitted stress-strain curve at 0% strain was extracted as the tangent modulus. Power of exponential stress-strain function was also extracted from the fitting. To consider a net stiffness of sclera, structural stiffness was calculated as a product of tangent modulus and thickness. Correlations between birefringence and these elastic parameters were examined.ResultsStatistically significant correlations between birefringence and all of the elastic parameters were found at 2 central positions. Structural stiffness and power of exponential stress-strain function were correlated with birefringence at the position near the optic nerve head. No correlation was found at the position near the equator.ConclusionsThe evidence of correlations between birefringence and elasticity of sclera tested uniaxially was shown for the first time. This work may become a basis for in vivo measurement of scleral biomechanics using PS-OCT.

On November 16,1775,Edmund Burke introduced his last plan for conciliation. This plan marked a fundamental change in his thinking, for in it Burke indicated his willingness to repudiate the right of parliament to tax America for revenue. Burke's Bill was negatived by 210 votes to 105,and it was immediately followed by Lord North's American Prohibiting Bill. On May 1777,Burke published A Letter to the Sheriffs of Bristol. With On American Taxation (1774) and On Conciliation with America (1775), A Letter to the Sheriffs of Bristol completes the trilogy of his pronouncements on America. In this Pamphet, Burke expained the reasons for the Rockinghams' secession, then went on to examine the American question again, and finally gave a eloquent, generalized defense of a practical approach to politics. I study the prudential political thought of Burke in his last plan for conciliation and in his A Letter to Sheriffs of Bristol.

Edmund Burke supported the American colonists before the Revolution, notwithstanding the "conservatism" of his beliefs. He served as agent for the New York Assembly from 1770 to 1775 and did every thing in in his power to prevent the outbreak of hostilities, by reconciling British sovereignty and American liberty. On April 19,1774,Burke delivered his Speech on American Taxation, in which he spoke in support of a motion for the repeal of the Tea Duty. Then, Burke gave his Speech on Consiliation with America, on March 22,1775,when political tension was at its highest point, and when alreacy the quarrel between Great Britain and her colonies had drifted to the verge of war. This speech has been studied and admired as a masterpiece of oratory. In this paper, I examine principally the political thought of Burke in the two Speeches on America.

武者小路実篤の中期(大3~6)作品群において、素材を同じくする戯曲「罪なき罪」(大3・3)と小説「不幸な男」(大6・5)の二作品は、他の諸作品を挟む時期に位置する。その中には、小説「彼が三十の時」(大3・10~11)、戯曲「その妹」(大4・3)、戯曲「ある青年の夢」(大5・3~11)など、戦争への作者の関心が反映された著名な作品が多く、この中期が「ヒューマニズムの時代」と呼ばれるゆえんである。しかし、小説「不幸な男」の特質として、戯曲「罪なき罪」から小説「不幸な男」への変容の根底には、〈死のリアルな表現〉の意図であること、その素材のデフォルメの意図には、モデルの〈苦境と苦悩の明確化〉があること、その主題は、〈神ならざる凡人には重すぎた運命〉であり、その情調は、〈厳粛な暗澹たる悲哀〉であることなどから、小説「不幸な男」という視座からは、この中期には、〈死の認識〉のモチーフが明瞭に見える。それが、「非戦」的と言われる諸作品を芸術として成立させる礎であり、武者小路独自の運命の観照なのである。
