日本は舎利信仰が深く、火葬後の収骨儀礼も敬いの念があり、世界的にも亡骸を深く尊重する国であると言える。一方で、すべての遺骨が永続的に崇め祀られることはなく、弔い手のいなくなった放置遺骨が増えつつある。超高齢化社会になり、その数はさらに増え、社会問題になる可能性もある。まさに今、葬儀・埋葬様式を変えていかなければいけない過渡期にある。本研究においては、日本の埋葬文化を尊重しながら、新たな埋葬方式を導入することを目指す。つまり、①火葬骨を、急激にではなく、自然の土壌中の分解に似せて徐々に分解する手法、かつ、②普通に手に入る毒性のない化学試薬・反応を用いて環境に優しい手法、を確立する。

Visual perception is somehow related to the function of our brain to understand the outer world where we are living. This brain function has biological significance because it successfully reconstructs the outer world in an ecologically meaningful manner: In other words, it reconstructs ‘Umwelt’ by von Uexkull. Essential components of our Umwelt are objects and their surfaces. In this article, I will introduce some of the works done by our group that are related to the neural representation of visual surfaces of objects such as color and Shitsukan, as well as the formation of visual surfaces.

本研究では,近年注目されているハイレゾオーディオが聴取体験に影響する機序について検討した。脳波と誘発電位を測定した実験により,以下の3点が明らかになった。(1)高周波成分が含まれている音源を聴くと,それをカットした音源を聴くときより,聴取時の脳波パワーが増大する,(2)高周波成分をフィルタで除去すると音が時間的に歪む(立ち上がりがぼやける)が,その違いはサンプリング周波数が変わらなければ聴覚皮質では検出されない,(3)サンプリング周波数を下げると音のぼやけが聴覚神経処理に内耳のレベルから影響を与える。

The relationships between oceanographic conditions and the distribution of common minke whales off southeastern Hokkaido was investigated in this study. Sighting surveys of common minke whales in this region were conducted in September, in 2002 and from 2004 to 2006. The density index (DI, the number of schools per 100 n.miles) of the whales decreased from 5.6 schools in 2002 to 1.2 schools in 2006. During the 4 years in which surveys were conducted, the monthly mean sea surface temperature (SST) in the survey area increased from 16.6°C in 2002 to 19.5°C in 2006, while the mean SST recorded at sighting locations was 15.5°C. The proportions of surveyed areas with a monthly mean SST ≤16°C in 2002 and 2004 were 46.5% and 17.0% respectively, whereas in 2005 and 2006, none of these areas had a monthly mean SST of less than 16°C. Pacific saury are among the major prey items of the minke whales in this region, and the number of the fishing boats was used as an indicator of the presence of the species in the surveyed area. The 4 year mean SST at the locations of the boats was 15.1°C. A reduction in the local abundance of the saury from 2002 to 2006 was inferred from the number of the boats operating in the region. These findings suggested that the apparent decline in the abundance of whales in the study area was associated with changes in SST and the availability of Pacific saury.

鉄道の初代建築師長;モレルは,任務遂行のみならず公共事業の推進や人材育成の建議により,また鉄道開業の栄誉に浴することなく志半ばに夭折したことも加わって,日本では高く評価されている。しかるに,生年,生地,学歴,来日前の実務経験など彼の経歴に関し一次資料に当って探索すると,日本で巷間語られていることにいくつかミスが散見されることが判明した。また調査の過程で,来日前経歴および彼が所属していた土木学会の報告書の存在が彼の日本での貢献や政府首脳への建議の背景を考える上で重要な意味合いを果たしていることが推察できた。かくして,現段階におけるモレル研究の成果として,経歴と貢献の結節点を本稿で提示したい。

Zui-ki-tei, the Japanese tea-ceremony house donated by Ginjiro Fujiwara (1869-1960) to Sweden, was built at The Museum of Ethnography in Stockholm in 1935. In the academic article in 2004, the author has already showed the donative circumstances of Zui-ki-tei and also illustrated the decisive role of Ida Trotzig (1864-1943) throughout the whole process of donation and construction of Zui-ki-tei. Most of the source material treated herein are derived from the newly found literature which describes the detailed construction process of Zui-ki-tei. The precise circumstances of donation and construction of Zui-ki-tei are reviewed in this paper.
