To date, little is known about the prognostic significance of ultrasonographic findings in dogs with protein-losing enteropathy (PLE). The aim of this retrospective study was to examine the prognostic value of ultrasonographic findings in dogs with PLE. A total of 26 dogs with PLE were included: 20 dogs with chronic enteropathy and 6 dogs with gastrointestinal lymphoma. The presence of small intestinal dilatation was associated with shorter survival time in dogs with PLE (P=0.003). The presence of hyperechoic intestinal mucosal striations was associated with longer survival time in dogs with PLE (P=0.0085). The results of the current study indicate that the presence of small intestinal dilatation might be associated with poor prognosis in dogs with PLE.

The three currently recognized species comprising the pelagic polystiliferous hoplonemertean genus Protopelagonemertes Brinkmann, 1917 are supposedly distinguishable chiefly with respect to the number of proboscis nerves: 29 (varying from 22 to 30) in P. hubrechti (Brinkmann, 1917); 19–21 (varying from 19 to 22) in P. beebei Coe, 1936; and 36 in P. joculatori Van der Spoel, 1988. A single specimen collected off the Pacific coast of Hokkaido, Japan, herein identified as P. beebei, was found to possess 19–23 primary proboscis nerves. In addition to the primary proboscis nerves, the material also possessed 12–16 secondary proboscis nerves, which are discernible from the primary nerves in that they coexist with putative glial cells. Although secondary proboscis nerves have been identified in some other species in the Pelagica, they have not previously been described for any members of the Protopelagonemertes. Our findings thus prompted us to question the validity of morphological species delimitation within this genus, given that the distinction between primary and secondary proboscis nerves has previously not been taken into consideration. Close examination of the specimen in the living state revealed that it is characterized by a pair of cephalic furrows, a structure commonly found in benthic representatives of the phylum, but herein confirmed for the first time among the Pelagica. A 658-bp partial sequence of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene from the newly examined specimen was found to be identical to sequences derived from two other specimens previously collected in Sagami Bay, thereby indicating that P. beebei may occur commonly in Japanese meso- to bathypelagic waters.

Overlooked since its establishment, Ascidia sydneiensis protecta Van Name, 1945, originally described as having mantle musculature comprising short parallel fibers restricted to the dorsal margin, compared with musculature along the entire margin (except for a central muscle-free area) found in the so-called “A. sydneiensis group”, is treated as a full species, Ascidia protecta. A detailed examination of the type and non-type specimens of the latter, all collected from the Gulf of California, confirmed the mantle musculature arrangement in the species, as well as revealing several new features (particularly in the alimentary tract), although not supporting a protective function of the anterior tunic to retracted siphons, as suggested in the original description. A comparison of A. protecta was made with congeneric species with similar musculature.

Sturmia micronychia sp. nov. is described from Japan. This species is very similar to S. bella (Meigen) and both are reared from the chestnut tiger butterfly, Parantica sita niphonica (Moore), and a papilionid, Byasa alcinous (Klug), in Japan. The male genitalia of both species are illustrated and diagnostic characters are given. A key to Asian species of Sturmia is provided and known species of the genus from Asia and Oceania are briefly redescribed.

A new peloric form of Cephalanthera erecta (Thunb.) Blume (Orchidaceae) is reported from Hokkaido, Honshu, and Shikoku, Japan. Cephalanthera erecta f. pelorica Hiros. Hayak. & Suetsugu has an inconspicuous lip and stigmas positioned at the apex of the column. The flowers of C. erecta f. pelorica resemble those of the probable peloric form of C. erecta (i.e., C. erecta var. oblanceolata N. Pearce & P. J. Cribb, C. nanlingensis A. Q. Hu & F. W. Xing) and C. longifolia (L.) Fritsch. f. conformis Suetsugu & Hiros. Hayak. However, C. erecta f. pelorica can be distinguished from C. erecta var. oblanceolata, which has a swollen organ on the abaxial surface of the column apex (vs. no swollen organ); C. nanlingensis, which has two staminodes (vs. five staminodes), and C. longifolia f. conformis, which has elliptic, coriaceous leaves (vs. lanceolate, papyraceous leaves).

Improvements in the long-term survival of cancer patients have led to growing awareness of the clinical importance of cancer therapeutics-related cardiac dysfunction (CTRCD), which can have a considerable effect on the prognosis and quality of life of cancer patients and survivors. Under such circumstances, onco-cardiology/cardio-oncology has emerged as a new discipline, with the aim of best managing cardiovascular complications, including CTRCD. Despite the recent accumulation of epidemiological and clinical information regarding CTRCD, the molecular mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of CTRCD by individual drugs remain to be determined. To achieve the goal of preventing cardiovascular complications in cancer patients and survivors, it is important to elucidate the pathogenic mechanisms and to establish diagnostic strategies with risk prediction and mechanism- and evidence-based therapies against CTRCD.

Background:Patients with cancer-associated venous thromboembolism (VTE) are at high risk for recurrent VTE and are recommended to receive prolonged anticoagulation therapy if they are at a low risk for bleeding. However, there are no established risk factors for bleeding during anticoagulation therapy.Methods and Results:The COMMAND VTE Registry is a multicenter retrospective registry enrolling 3,027 consecutive patients with acute symptomatic VTE among 29 Japanese centers. The present study population consisted of 592 cancer-associated VTE patients with anticoagulation therapy. We constructed a multivariable Cox proportional hazard model to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of the potential risk factors for major bleeding. During a median follow-up period of 199 days, major bleeding occurred in 72 patients. The cumulative incidence of major bleeding was 5.8% at 3 months, 13.8% at 1 year, 17.5% at 2 years, and 28.1% at 5 years. The most frequent major bleeding site was gastrointestinal tract (47%). Terminal cancer (adjusted HR, 4.17; 95% CI, 2.22–7.85, P<0.001), chronic kidney disease (adjusted HR, 1.89; 95% CI 1.06–3.37, P=0.031), and gastrointestinal cancer (adjusted HR, 1.78; 95% CI, 1.04–3.04, P=0.037) were independently associated with an increased risk of major bleeding.Conclusions:Major bleeding events were common during anticoagulation therapy in real-world cancer-associated VTE patients. Terminal cancer, chronic kidney disease, and gastrointestinal cancer were the independent risk factors for major bleeding.

This study investigated the impact of sea surface temperature (SST) on a snowfall event of late January 2018 on Kanto, Honshu, Japan, associated with an extratropical cyclone (south-coast cyclone) along the Pacific side, during the Kuroshio large meandering period by a regional atmospheric model. We addressed SST impacts on the snowfall event under almost the same synoptic-scale conditions, such as extratropical cyclone, in a framework of lateral boundary forcing. We conducted control experiments (KLM) with SST of the Kuroshio large mean-dering, and sensitivity experiments (NKLM) prescribed non-Kuroshio large meandering SSTs. Observational results showed that SST anomalies south of Tokai, and east of northern Kanto and Tohoku could be candidates to modify a snowfall event. As simulated results, timings of snowfall and precipitation associated with the extratropical cyclone was reproduced. Unlike what has been suggested, the SST impact south of Tokai on snowfall was not clear. However, the SST east of northern Kanto and Tohoku showed a significant impact. This impact was explained by southward advection of modified air-mass from east of northern Kanto and Tohoku. Additional sensitivity experiments supported this result. This study implies the importance of the SST anomaly east of northern Kanto and Tohoku for snowfall in Tokyo.

In nuclear power plants, concretes used for biological shielding walls are exposed to radiation such as neutrons and gamma rays over the long-term operation of the plant. Previous studies have reported that neutron irradiation causes aggregate expansion due to the metamictization of quartz and feldspar leading to reduced density and a loss of the compressive strength and Young' s modulus of the concrete. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the current state of a concrete biological shield (CBS) and predict its future soundness. In this study, a rigid-body spring model, which can easily evaluate fracture behavior by using springs between each element, is used to conduct numerical analyses on a CBS. A three-phase (mortar, aggregate, and interfacial transition zone) model of a 2000 mm thick CBS is used to investigate the varying deformation responses depending on the presence or absence of reinforcing bars (rebar), creep, and an inner steel plate with five types of analyses, i.e. analysis to understand the impacts of temperature distribution, re-inforcement bars, an internal steel plate, and creep of mortar. The results show that cracking and delamination occur inside the CBS, resulting in a lack of cracking on the outside. They also show that the cracks are reduced by rebar and creep, resulting in cracks extending from the innermost edge to a depth of approximately 150 mm.

To evaluate the radiation-induced degradation of concrete, a rigid-body spring network model is introduced that takes into account the three phases in concrete: mortar, aggregate, and the interfacial transition zone. The proposed model enables evaluation of the change in the physical properties of concrete affected by aggregate expansion under the free restraint condition. Good agreement with previous experimental data is found for the linear expansion of the concrete specimen and the compressive strength, Young’s modulus, and splitting tensile strength. Based on the numerical results, it is concluded that, to reproduce the physical property changes in concrete, the expansion of mortar due to the radiation-induced expansion of fine aggregate and/or creep behavior must be considered. In addition, it is clarified that an isolated expansion of mortar with a lack of expansion in the coarse aggregate also degrades the concrete and, consequently, analysis of the type of aggregate used is critical for predicting the properties of concrete under neutron irradiation. Furthermore, the impact of inhomogeneous expansion of rock-forming minerals in coarse aggregates on physical property changes is studied, showing that such a partial expansion in the aggregates and the resultant cracks in aggregates greatly influences the reduction of the Young’s modulus, with minimal impact on the reduction of compressive strength. The proposed model can be used to evaluate concrete degradation due to radiation-induced volumetric expansion of aggregate caused by the metamictization of rock-forming minerals.

In this paper, we propose a multiple human tracking method with alternately updating trajectories and mult iframe action features (MHT-MAF). Even though occlusion or motion blur occurs due to the sudden movement of the drone, ID switches are prevented by the stable MAF. In the experiments, we verified the effectiveness of the proposed method using the Okutama-Action dataset. Our code is available online (https://github.com/hitottiez/mht-paf).

While a KCND3 V392I mutation uniquely displays a mixed electrophysiological phenotype of Kv4.3, only limited clinical information on the mutation carriers is available. We report two teenage siblings exhibiting both cardiac (early repolarization syndrome and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation) and cerebral phenotypes (epilepsy and intellectual disability), in whom we identified the KCND3 V392I mutation. We propose a link between the KCND3 mutation with a mixed electrophysiological phenotype and cardiocerebral phenotypes, which may be defined as a novel cardiocerebral channelopathy.

本報告では, 1991年8月30日に M-3S II-6 号ロケットにより打ち上げられた"ようこう"の姿勢制御系に関する詳細な説明を行う。"ようこう"は近地点高度約500km, 遠地点高度約800km, 軌道傾斜角約31゜の軌道に投入され, そのミッションとして軟 X 線帯及び硬 X 線帯の各高分解能望遠鏡を使用して, 太陽の精密な X 線画像を日々撮り続けている。 "ようこう"にはこれまでにない高分解能の X 線太陽望遠鏡が搭載されているため, 撮像された太陽像にブレが生じないように非常に高い安定度の姿勢制御が要求されている。このため姿勢制御系はバイアスモーメンタム方式に基づく姿勢安定化を図った上で, アクチュエータとして2台の強力なモーメンタムホイールと高速応答の小型コントロールモーメントジャイロを使用することによって精密で安定な太陽指向姿勢を保持し, この制御要求に応えている。本報告書の構成は以下のとおりである。第1章で衛星の形状, 地上支援系を含む姿勢制御系の概要を, 第2章で姿勢制御モード構成と各モードの制御方式概要を, 第3章で機体の力学特性と姿勢擾乱特性を, 第4章で"ようこう"に搭載した姿勢制御系機器の性能を, 第5章で地上支援系の構成, 機能を, 第6章で打ち上げ前に地上において確認してきた姿勢制御系の動作確認試験の目的と概要を, 第7章で飛翔結果に基づく姿勢制御系搭載機器の動作, 姿勢制御性能, 及び衛星に働く空力外乱トルクの推定結果について記述している。

Central effects of gluten exorphin A5 (Gly-Tyr-Tyr-Pro-Thr), a fragment from wheat gluten, were studied on the pain-inhibitory system, emotionality and learning/memory processes in mice. Orally administered gluten exorphin A5 produced neither an antinociceptive effect nor an effect on morphine analgesia. Intracerebroventricularly (i.c.v.) administered gluten exorphin A5 produced mild but significant antinociception in a dose-dependent manner, while not affecting the morphine analgesia. On the other hand, oral gluten exorphin A5 suppressed the endogenous pain-inhibitory system, i.e., antinociception induced by socio-psychological- (PSY-) stress (SIA) using a communication box; intraperitoneal gluten exorphin A5 abolished both footshock- (FS-) stress-induced antinociception (SIA) and PSY-SIA; and i.c.v. gluten exorphin A5 suppressed FS-SIA, but rather potentiated PSY-SIA. This peptide given by these routes was withuot effect on forced swim-SIA. In addition, oral gluten exorphin A5 tended to prolong the retention time on open arms in the elevated plus-maze test. Finally, oral gluten exorphin A5 when given during the post-training period of learning/memory processes significantly increased the latency into the dark compartment in the one-trail step-though type passive avoidance test, indicating that the peptide also facilitates the acquire/consolidation process of learning/memory. Thus, gluten exorphin A5 has been found to produce various effects no only in the peripheral nervous systems but also in the central nervous system.

Background: The World Health Organization declared the novel coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19) to be a pandemic on March 11, 2020. Large-scale monitoring for capturing the current epidemiological situation of COVID-19 in Japan would improve preparation for and prevention of a massive outbreak.Methods: A chatbot-based healthcare system named COOPERA (COvid-19: Operation for Personalized Empowerment to Render smart prevention And care seeking) was developed using the LINE app to evaluate the current Japanese epidemiological situation. LINE users could participate in the system either though a QR code page in the prefectures’ websites or a banner at the top of the LINE app screen. COOPERA asked participants questions regarding personal information, preventive actions, and non-specific symptoms related to COVID-19 and their duration. We calculated daily cross correlation functions between the reported number of infected cases confirmed using polymerase chain reaction and the symptom-positive group captured by COOPERA.Results: We analyzed 206,218 participants from three prefectures reported between March 5 and 30, 2020. The mean age of participants was 44.2 (standard deviation, 13.2) years. No symptoms were reported by 96.93% of participants, but there was a significantly positive correlation between the reported number of COVID-19 cases and self-reported fevers, suggesting that massive monitoring of fever might help to estimate the scale of the COVID-19 epidemic in real time.Conclusions: COOPERA is the first real-time system being used to monitor trends in COVID-19 in Japan and provides useful insights to assist political decisions to tackle the epidemic.

The monostiliferous hoplonemertean Proamphiporus kaimeiae sp. nov. is described based on a single specimen collected from the bottom of the Northwest Pacific, 262 m deep, off Tohoku in Japan, by use of a remotely operated vehicle during a cruise organized by Tohoku Ecosystem-Associated Marine Sciences (TEAMS) research project in 2019. The position of the cerebral organs in the new species, being posterior to the proboscis insertion, is unusual for Eumonostilifera, which is one of the diagnostic traits of the so-far monospecific Proamphiporus Chernyshev and Polyakova, 2019, and Amphiporus rectangulus Strand, Herrera-Bachiller, Nygren, and Kånneby, 2014. The latter is herein transferred to Proamphiporus to yield a new combination, Proamphiporus rectangulus comb. nov., based on the reported internal morphology. Molecular phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA, cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, 18S rRNA, 28S rRNA, and histone H3 genes placed P. kaimeiae in a clade comprised of Proamphiporus crandalli Chernyshev and Polyakova, 2019 and Proamphiporus rectangulus.

Introduction: Mirogabalin should be equivalent to pregabalin, but with fewer incidences of adverse drug reactions (ADRs). To verify these benefits in actual clinical trials, our study investigated the frequency of ADRs and mirogabalin' s analgesic effects during treatment of peripheral neuropathic pain.Methods: This study included 74 patients with lower limb pain. We surveyed patient reports of ADRs during the follow-up period as the primary endpoint and examined the visual analog scale (VAS) reported for lower limb pain as the secondary endpoint (before administration, and two and four weeks after administration).Results: The occurrence of ADR was 27.0%, like the frequency of ADRs in the clinical trials for other disorders. However, the discontinuation rate of administration was 10.8%, which was significantly lower than the frequency of ADR occurrences. When the analgesic effect was assessed, a significant decrease in the temporal change of VAS for lower limb pain was observed before administration, and two and four weeks after administration.Conclusions: In this study, the occurrence of ADRs reported by the patients was like the frequency of ADRs reported in the clinical trials for other disorders. When assessing the analgesic effect, the temporal change of VAS for lower limb pain was found to decrease significantly before administration, and two and four weeks after administration.
