[Purpose] The purpose of the study was to assess the muscle activity change of the tibialis posterior, flexor digitorum longus, and peroneus longus during gait with orthoses. [Subjects and Methods] Sixteen healthy males participated in this study. Activity of each muscle was measured by using fine-wire and surface electromyography. Gait task was performed by the participants barefoot, with footwear and with orthoses. The electromyography data from a stance phase of each gait trial were used for analysis. The stance phase was divided into contact, midstance, and propulsion phases. The data from ten participants were extracted for final analysis, as electromyography measurements were unsuccessful for the other six. [Results] The results demonstrated that orthoses significantly reduced the tibialis posterior muscle activity in the propulsion phase compared to that in the barefoot condition. Although there was a significant difference in the midstance phase, post hoc analysis did not indicate significant differences among the phases. No significant electromyography amplitude change was detected in flexor digitorum longus and peroneus longus. [Conclusion] Orthothes reduced the tibialis posterior activity level during gait. This result may be beneficial for patients with injuries related to excessive activity of tibialis posterior.

Kirchhoff approximation (KA) method has been applied for ray-mode conversion to analyze the plane wave scattering by conducting thick slits. The scattering fields can be considered as field radiations from equivalent magnetic current sources assumed by closing the aperture of the slit. The obtained results are compared with those of other methods to validate the accuracy of the proposed formulation in different conditions of slit dimension.

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the changes in intramuscular blood volume (IMBV) under continuous shortwave diathermy (CSWD) and compare them with the electric hot pack (EHP). The subjects consisted of 41 healthy adults, who received one of three interventions: CSWD (n=17), EHP (n=12), or no intervention (Controls: n=12). Analyses were done of the values obtained five minutes preceding the intervention (T1), during the intervention (T2), and after the intervention (T3). CSWD was applied with an output of 80 W. Both CSWD and EHP were applied for 10 min. Changes in IMBV of the right medial gastrocnemius muscle were evaluated using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Oxy-hemoglobin (oxy-Hb), deoxy-hemoglobin (deoxy-Hb), and total-hemoglobin (total-Hb) were measured using NIRS. At T2 in the CSWD trial, the integration values of oxy-Hb and total-Hb were significantly increased compared with those of the controls (p<0.01), and they were significantly increased compared with those of both the controls and the EHP trial (p<0.01) at T3 of the CSWD trial. The study results verified that IMBV increases as a result of the local thermal effect of CSWD, and also suggest that CSWD is more effective at enhancing IMBV than EHP.

Background: Studies have shown that rural residents face disadvantages concerning medical access and socio-economic conditions. However, the social determinants of health among older people in rural areas are still unclear. The Neuron to Environmental Impact across Generations (NEIGE) study investigated the social determinants of health among older rural adults.Methods: A survey was conducted among the older residents of Tokamachi City, Japan. We randomly selected study participants (N = 1,346) from four stratified groups by age (65–74 and 75–84 years) and residential area (Tokamachi center [downtown] and Matsunoyama [mountain]). The survey collected data on socio-economic status, lifestyle, health, and neighborhood environment. Blood and urine sampling were also conducted, and physical activity was assessed. Magnetic resonance brain imaging (MRI) and Apo-E gene were also examined in the analysis.Results: In total, 527 people participated in the NEIGE study (participation rate: 39.2%). The average age of the participants was 73.5 (standard deviation, 5.6) years, and 47.3% were male. No differences in demographics were found between downtown and mountain residents, except for educational attainment, which was lower among mountain residents. Lifestyles were similar, except for the higher percentage of everyday drinkers (33.3–35.3%) in the mountain area. Concerning physical health, muscle mass, grip strength, and measured physical activity were significantly higher among mountain residents. However, gait speed and balance were better among downtown residents.Conclusion: The findings of the NEIGE study will help elucidate the social determinants of health in older rural adults in Japan, and emphasize the different outcomes between downtown and mountain areas.

In this reported work, we achieved high-throughput, highly sensitive fluorescent analysis using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) that employed a metallic nanoparticle (NP)-immobilized 96-well plate. The immobilization of metallic NPs on a 96-well plate effectively amplified fluorescent signals of the assay. The silver (Ag) NP-immobilized plate showed the best fluorescent enhancement effect of all plates immobilized by metal NPs. Our results demonstrate the potential of applying Ag NPs to enhance the efficiency of direct and indirect ELISA by the labeling of targets.

Background:Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA)-derived fractional flow reserve (FFRCT) is an established tool for identifying lesion-specific ischemia that is now approved for use by the Japanese insurance system. However, current clinical reimbursement is strictly limited to institutions with designated appropriate use criteria (AUC). This study assessed differences in physicians’ behavior (e.g., use and interpretation of FFRCT, final management) according to Japanese AUC and non-AUC site designation.Methods and Results:Of 5,083 patients in the ADVANCE Registry, 1,829 from Japan were enrolled in this study. Physicians’ behavior after interrogating CCTA and FFRCTwas analyzed separately according to AUC and non-AUC site designation. Compared with AUC sites, patients referred for FFRCTfrom non-AUC sites had a higher rate of negative FFRCT, less severe anatomic stenosis, and a slightly lower rate of management plan reclassification (51.2% vs. 61.3%), with near-identical utility in both groups. Actual care corresponded equally well to post-FFRCTplans in both groups. The likelihood of revascularization for positive or negative FFRCTwas similar between the 2 groups. Importantly, AUC and non-AUC sites were equally unlikely to revascularize patients with negative FFRCTand stenosis >50% or patients with positive FFRCTand stenosis <50%.Conclusions:Compared with AUC sites, non-AUC sites had lower disease burden and reclassification of management plans, but nearly identical clinical integration. Actual care corresponded equally well to post-FFRCTrecommendations at both sites.

Earthquake focal mechanisms before and after the 1995 Hyogo-ken Nanbu earthquake have been investigated using seismic records from regional seismic networks. Before the mainshock, seismicity was very active at the Tamba Plateau, a neighboring area of the Hyogo-ken Nanbu earthquake rupture zone. In contrast, the seismicity along the Hyogo-ken Nanbu earthquake rupture zone was not so active. Most earthquakes in these regions had source mechanisms of E-W compression and were of the strike-slip or reverse-fault type. Most aftershocks along the Hyogo-ken Nanbu earthquake rupture zone have strike-slip solutions with P-axis in the E-W or ESE-WNW direction, which is compatible with the trend of aftershock distribution and the strike of active faults the same as the mainshock mechanism. Simultaneously, many other aftershocks were of the reverse-fault type with E-W compression. This area is still controlled by the regional stress field of E-W compression observed before the mainshock. Although, we could find various types of mechanisms in the aftershock sequence, some normal fault-type events were also observed in the mainshock rupture zone. We could find events of SE-NW compression, and this direction is nearly perpendicular to the trend of the mainshock rupture zone. Some aftershocks that occurred near the epicenter of the mainshock had solutions of N-S compression. The geometry of the active fault systems and/or local stress change induced by the mainshock may cause these complex features of focal mechanisms. After the mainshock, the focal mechanisms of earthquakes in the Tamba Plateau were approximately E-W compressional; the same as that before the mainshock.

Background: Seasonal variation and regional heterogeneity have been observed in the estimated effect of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) mass on mortality. Differences in the chemical compositions of PM2.5 may cause this variation. We investigated the association of the daily concentration of PM2.5 components with mortality in Nagoya, Japan.Methods: We combined daily mortality counts for all residents aged 65 years and older with concentration data for PM2.5 mass and components in Nagoya from April 2003 to December 2007. A time-stratified case-crossover design was used to examine the association of daily mortality with PM2.5 mass and each component (chloride, nitrate, sulfate, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, ammonium, elemental carbon [EC], and organic carbon [OC]).Results: We found a stronger association between mortality and PM2.5 mass in transitional seasons. In analysis for each PM2.5 component, sulfate, nitrate, chloride, ammonium, potassium, EC, and OC were significantly associated with mortality in a single-pollutant model. In a multi-pollutant model, an interquartile range increase in the concentration of sulfate was marginally associated with an increase in all-cause mortality of 2.1% (95% confidence interval, −0.1 to 4.4).Conclusions: These findings suggest that some specific PM components have a more hazardous effect than others and contribute to seasonal variation in the health effects of PM2.5.

A young adult patient with untreated sarcoidosis spontaneously developed a left ventricular (LV) aneurysm in the anterolateral free wall. Single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) using Gallium-67 clearly demonstrated widespread abnormal uptake, including the LV aneurysm. Thallium-201 SPECT revealed a perfusion defect in the anterolateral wall, and abnormal uptake of technetium-99m pyrophosphate was seen, especially in the borders of the defect lesion. Hydroquinone (HQ) is a chemical compound that inhibits the functions of melanocytes and has long been known for its skin-whitening effect. According to previous studies, the Tyrosinase (Tyr) activity inhibitory effect and melanocyte-specific cell toxicity are known depigmenting mechanisms; however, details of the underlying mechanisms are unknown. Arbutin (Arb) is also known for its Tyr activity inhibitory effect and is commonly used as a skin-whitening agent. However, the detailed depigmenting mechanism of Arb is also not yet fully understood. Few studies have attempted to elucidate the effects of HQ and Arb on undifferentiated melanocytes. In this study, we examined the effects of HQ and Arb throughout each stage of differentiation of melanocytes using a mouse embryonic stem cell (ESC) culture system to induce melanocytes. The results showed that HQ in particular downregulated the early stage of differentiation, in which neural crest cells were generated, and the late stage of differentiation, in which melanogenesis became active. On the other hand, Arb had no effect on the differentiation of melanocytes, and only suppressed melanogenesis by specifically suppressing elevations in Tyr expression in the late stage of differentiation.

The feasibility of ultrasonographic measurement of thyroid gland area to common carotid artery (TG:CCA) was investigated. Twenty-one healthy, 12 hypothyroid and 18 non-thyroid illness (NTI) dogs were evaluated. The area of thyroid lobe and common carotid artery in right and left sides were measured using the same ultrasonographic images in transverse plane. The average of the right and left ratio was calculated as TG:CCA. The median TG:CCA of 21 healthy dogs was 1.53, and it did not correlate either body weight or age. The median TG:CCA of 12 hypothyroid dogs was 0.81, which was significantly lower than that of 18 NTI dogs (1.81, P<0.001). If the cut off value <1.12 was used, TG:CCA indicated hypothyroidism with a sensitivity of 100%, specificity of 83%, and accuracy of 90%. Our data indicated that TG:CCA was independent of both body weight, which may contribute to consistent measurement of thyroid size. The results of this study suggest that TG:CCA is a promising tool for diagnosing canine hypothyroidism.

A new species, Chrysosplenium suzukaense, from the northern part of the Yoro Mountains and Suzuka Mountain Range, Central Honshu, Japan, is described. Chrysosplenium suzukaense belongs to ser. Macrostemon, and is most similar to C. fauriei in the C. fauriei group (C. fauriei, C. kiotense and C. nagasei) distributed on the Sea of Japan side of Japan. However, C. suzukaense differs from C. fauriei in always having four stamens opposite the calyx lobes (vs. eight stamens), and smaller stature and flowers. The distribution of C. suzukaense is nearer the Pacific Ocean side, but in an area of much snow in winter, showing climatic conditions similar to the Sea of Japan side. The rosette-like basal leaves retained until end of the flowering time in C. suzukaense and the C. fauriei group may be an adaptation to the Sea of Japan side environment, especially to a much snow. The chromosome number, representing the karyotype, of C. suzukaense was confirmed to be 2n=22, and similar to other members of the C. fauriei group.

Multiple human tracking is widely used in various fields such as marketing and surveillance. The typical approach associates human detection results between consecutive frames using the features and bounding boxes (position+size) of detected humans. Some methods use an omnidirectional camera to cover a wider area, but ID switch often occurs in association with detections due to following two factors: i) The feature is adversely affected because the bounding box includes many background regions when a human is captured from an oblique angle. ii) The position and size change dramatically between consecutive frames because the distance metric is non-uniform in an omnidirectional image. In this paper, we propose a novel method that accurately tracks humans with an association metric for omnidirectional images. The proposed method has two key points: i) For feature extraction, we introduce local rectification, which reduces the effect of background regions in the bounding box. ii) For distance calculation, we describe the positions in a world coordinate system where the distance metric is uniform. In the experiments, we confirmed that the Multiple Object Tracking Accuracy (MOTA) improved 3.3 in the LargeRoom dataset and improved 2.3 in the SmallRoom dataset.

A novel type of encephalopathy associated with the ingestion of Sugihiratake mushroom (Pleurocybella porrigens) occurred in patients with chronic renal failure treated on hemodialysis in fall, 2004 in Japan. To clarify the mechanism of encephalopathy onset, we, for the first time, purified the cyanogen glycoside fraction (CG) from Sugihiratake mushroom using reversed phase high-performance liquid chromatography and hydrophilic interaction chromatography. Furthermore, we investigated single dose toxicity of the CG in an adenine-induced rat model of chronic renal damage (CRD). Pathological examination of kidneys indicates the development of CRD. Oral administration of the CG induces the accumulation of thiocyanate in the hemolyzed blood and brain in CRD rats, although no morphological changes were found in the brain. No further enhancement of kidney damage is observed after the oral administration of the CG in CRD rats. This is the first experimental report to suggest that acute encephalopathy, induced by Sugihiratake mushroom intake in the patients with chronic renal failure, is associated with intoxication of cyanide and thiocyanate, presumably produced metabolically produced after the ingestion of Sugihiratake mushroom.

The Takagi Family Documents held at Nagoya University Library is a collection of old documents passed down through the Nishi-Takagi family, former retainers of the shogun. Currently, Nagoya University Library Research takes over the project of organizing the remaining materials. In parallel with this, we are also investigating related documents that exist outside the university. Therefore, this paper introduces documents that were newly confirmed after FY2014, again reports the current status of the three Takagi families document, and at the same time present digital library concept for the integration and sharing of the three Takagi families document.
