Anti-melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 (anti-MDA5) antibody is associated with rapidly progressive interstitial lung disease (RP-ILD) in patients with clinically amyopathic dermatomyositis (CADM) or dermatomyositis (DM). We herein report three Japanese cases of anti-MDA5 antibody-positive RP-ILD without signs of CADM or DM. High-resolution computed tomography revealed patchy or subpleural distribution of consolidations and/or ground-glass opacities accompanied by traction bronchiectasis. All patients succumbed to respiratory failure within two months. Anti-MDA5 antibody-positive RP-ILD without signs of CADM or DM should be included in the differential diagnosis of acute/subacute ILD. Measurement of anti-MDA5 antibody and an intensive immunosuppressive regimen might rescue these patients from RP-ILD.

鉄道システムの保安装置の多くに使用されている変周式ATS の地上子の状態監視技術について提案する。ATS地上子のQ値管理は、安全性確保のためには必須の要件である。このため、沿線に配置されたATS地上子を定期保全によりQ値測定装置で計測している。一方、省力化を目的として車上からATS地上子のQ値を検測することもおこなわれているが、レベル管理が主体であり正確なQ値計測と対応性の点で問題がある。提案する手法は車上子の電流値検測によりQ値を算出するもので、地上子対アンテナ間の距離や相互誘導係数値によらない安定した計測ができる。

To determine the effects of recent warming trends on agricultural production in Japan, in 2003 and 2005, surveys of the public institutes of agricultural research in 47 prefectures were conducted. The results suggest that recent warming trends have already significantly affected nearly all types of crops and livestock in Japan. All 47 prefectures reported warming effects on fruit tree cultivation and over 70% of prefectures recognized the effects on rice, vegetable and flower cultivation. Horticultural crops and rice are likely to be more sensitive to global warming than other agricultural crops and livestock. Our survey elucidated many effects of recent warming, such as phenological changes in many crops, increases in fruit coloring disorders and incidences of chalky rice kernels, reductions in yields of wheat, barley, vegetables, flowers, milk and eggs, and alterations in the type of disease and pest.

Aims: The present study was conducted to establish a practical method for measuring non-cholesterol sterols and reference intervals of serum levels.Methods: Healthy subjects (109 men and 151 women), four patients with sitosterolemia, and 10 heterozygous mutation carriers of ABCG5/ABCG8 genes were investigated. Then, three non-cholesterol sterols (sitosterol, campesterol, and lathosterol) of fasting serum samples were measured via a practical and highly sensitive gas chromatography (GC) method with 0.2 µg/mL as the lower limit of quantification. The coefficient of variation (CV) values for within-run reproducibility were 3.06%, 1.89%, and 1.77% for lathosterol, campesterol, and sitosterol, respectively. The CV values for between-run reproducibility were 2.81%, 2.06%, and 2.10% for lathosterol, campesterol, and sitosterol, respectively.Results: The serum levels of sitosterol and campesterol were significantly higher in women than in men, whereas the serum levels of lathosterol were significantly higher in men than in women. Because of these gender difference, the determination of reference intervals of the three sterol values was performed by considering gender. The reference intervals of sitosterol, campesterol, and lathosterol were 0.99–3.88, 2.14–7.43, and 0.77–3.60 µg/mL in men and 1.03–4.45, 2.19–8.34, and 0.64–2.78 µg/mL in women, respectively. The serum levels of sitosterol and campesterol were higher in patients with sitosterolemia (94.3±47.3 and 66.3±36.6 µg/mL, respectively) than in healthy subjects.Conclusion: These results demonstrate a practical and highly sensitive GC method to measure non-cholesterol sterol levels and gender-segregated reference intervals of sitosterol, campesterol, and lathosterol in Japanese healthy subjects.

Scholars of American literature have produced innumerable interpretations on Nathaniel Hawthorne's masterpiece The Scarlet Letter. Notably, each different approach to the work has revealed a different viewpoint hidden within the story. Here, the story is to be analyzed in relation to the lifelong inner angst of author Nathaniel Hawthorne. This new approach shows the main characters to be individuals into whom the depth of Nathaniel Hawthorne's psychological mindset has been projected. Arthur Dimmesdale, a young minister, reflects the author's internal struggle over his ancestor's past involvement in the judgement of witches, including at the Salem witch trial in 1692. Chillingworth, a diabolical man, represents Nathaniel Hawthorne's sense of guilt, and shows his commitment as an artist to observing people's inner souls. Hester's freethinking manner and way of life can be seen as Nathaniel Hawthorne's strong determination to become an independent artist, and one who is never to fall victim to the stains of the past and society. Nathaniel Hawthorne's longing for British culture is reflected in Pearl. The particular end that each character meets can also be interpreted as carrying its own unique message. Nathaniel Hawthorne is very negative about Chillingworth; the author shows no sympathy for his own inevitably sinful fate of peeping into people's inner souls. The implications of Dimmesdale's death after his final confession on the scaffold are somewhat ambiguous. It is uncertain whether he was saved or severely judged. More likely, there is a mixture of both elements, and his death clearly shows us that the sinful lifestyle of Nathaniel Hawthorne's ancestors must end. Hester ultimately returns of her own free will to the puritan society of Boston, after having lived for a while in the Old World with her daughter Pearl. Hester's return tells us that Nathaniel Hawthorne's desire for freedom includes the possibility of serving the puritan society. Pearl is the only character alive at the end of the novel, happily married, and possibly in England. Nathaniel Hawthorne's decision to live as an artist includes aspirations of British heritage. Dimmesdale's inherited strong animal nature is the root of the persecuting spirit in the history of the author's' ancestors. Therefore, the scarlet letter A in the story can be interpreted as the initial letter of the word 'animal.'

Isotope labeling measurements using mass spectrometry can provide informative insights on the metabolic systems of various organisms. The detailed identification of carbon positions included in the fragment ions of dicarboxylic and tricarboxylic acids in central carbon metabolism is needed for precise interpretation of the metabolic states. In this study, fragment ions containing the carbon backbone cleavage of dicarboxylic and tricarboxylic in the Krebs cycle were investigated by using gas chromatography (GC)-electron ionization (EI)-MS and GC-EI-MS/MS. The positions of decarboxylation in the dicarboxylic and tricarboxylic acids were successfully identified by analyses using position-specific 13C-labeled standards prepared by in vitro enzymatic reactions. For example, carboxyl groups of C1 and C6 of trimethylsilyl (TMS)- and tert-butyldimethylsilyl (TBDMS)-derivatized malic and citric acids were primarily cleaved by EI. MS/MS analyses were also performed, and fragment ions of TBDMS-citric and α-ketoglutaric acids (αKG) with the loss of two carboxyl groups in collision-induced dissociation (CID) were observed.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the surface properties and gloss of CAD/CAM composites after toothbrush abrasion testing. Four CAD/CAM composites for molars (Cerasmart 300, Estelite P block, Katana Avencia P block, and KZR-CAD HR3 Gammatheta), one CAD/CAM composite for premolars (Shofu Block HC Hard), and one feldspathic ceramics (Vitablocs Mark II) were assessed. Knoop hardness number, gloss, and surface roughness (Ra, Rz, and Sa) were measured before and after toothbrush abrasion testing. Knoop hardness number values were in the order Vitablocs Mark II > Katana Avencia P block > Estelite P Block > Shofu Block HC Hard > Cerasmart 300 > KZR-CAD HR3 Gammatheta. After testing, the gloss of Estelite P block and KZR-CAD HR3 Gammatheta was greatly decreased and surface roughness was greatly increased. Periodic recall and re-polishing may thus be necessary when these products are used clinically.

The subgenus Setihenricia Chichvarkhin and Chichvarkhina, 2017 currently consists of 32 out of 94 species of sea stars in the genus Henricia Gray, 1840. However, only 10 have been molecularly ascertained as to the phylogenetic position. Based on seven mitochondrial gene markers (16S rRNA, COI, tRNA-Ala, tRNA-Leu, tRNA-Asn, tRNA-Gln, and tRNA-Pro), we performed molecular analyses to assess the monophyly of Setihenricia using 16 species of Henricia from Japanese waters, as well as other congeners for which sequences were available in public databases. The monophyletic Setihenricia was only weakly recovered because the support values were low, but we assume this taxon may be valid in consideration of a morphological key. Henricia kinkasana Hayashi, 1940 is herein identified as a new member of Setihenricia, based on molecular and morphological evidence. Sequences in the public databases previously identified as H. compacta (Sladen, 1889) and H. obesa (Sladen, 1889) were nested in the Setihenricia clade; these two species are also likely members of Setihenricia. Our morphological assessment yielded three findings: (1) the number of the rows of spines on each inferomarginal plate, being three or more, appears to be a useful diagnostic character for Setihenricia, as has been suggested in previous studies, (2) the degree of spine tapering turned out to be less relevant in diagnosing the subgenus than previously supposed, (3) two newly introduced characters—(i) the width of adambulacral plates and (ii) the ratio of two measurements in ambulacral plates to the length of interradius—may be effective to distinguish members of this apparent Henricia subclade from other members of the genus.

Vegetables are rich sources of nutrients such as fiber, minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants. Vegetables also contain various free-form amino acids, which improves their nutritional and palatable value. Cooking alters the content of free amino acids in vegetables, which affects their nutritional values. In this study, free amino acid levels were evaluated after cooking vegetables by different methods, boiling, roasting in an oven, and using a microwave. Results showed that many vegetables analyzed contain aspartate and glutamine abundantly. On the other hand, hydroxyproline, cysteine, ornithine and citrulline are the free amino acids existing at low or undetectable levels in all vegetables tested. The total free amino acid content in vegetables tended to decrease after boiling, and almost the same amount of free amino acids was obtained in the cooking liquid. Roasting of vegetables in an oven resulted in an increase in the content of specific amino acids, including γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Thus, it is important to choose the right cooking methods to prevent the loss of free amino acids. The results of the present study emphasize the changes in the contents of free amino acids during cooking with methods that are typically used on a daily basis. Our study on the dynamics of free amino acids caused by various cooking methods provides ample information for future nutritional studies.

Although the number of crimes in Japan has decreased since 2003, it is over2,000,000 per year now. In the U.S. and Europe, theoretical studies mainly fromthe aspect of crime-prevention have been proceeding. For example, the crimeprevention through environmental design (CPTED)theory, the crime opportunitytheory, the broken windows theory and other theories were published.On the other hand, security companies have promoted research anddevelopment of alarm systems including various sensors in order to detect anintruder into an office or home. However crime cannot be absolutely avoided inadvance even now.In this paper, shoplifters’ behavior analysis and shoplifting detection are studied.First, reports published by public institutions are surveyed. Second,crime-prevention theories are studied. Third, retired policepersons andplain-clothes security agents against shoplifting were interviewed. Fourth, theexisting measures against shoplifting are surveyed, and their effects andproblems are showed.The existing measures against shoplifting face many problems, and a drasticsolution to shoplifting is required seriously. Therefore, the feasibility of thesystem which effectively identifies shoplifters by itself is studied in this paper.Specifically, the method for identifying shoplifters by using visitors’ behaviorhistories, sales records and camera images is formulated.The following two systems related to visitors’ behavior histories are studied inthis paper. 1) Image processing system using general-purpose cameras 2) IR sensor array systemThe system of 1) had been implemented in a real retail store for 6 months, andvisitors’ behavior histories were checked manually. As a result, the capture ratewas approximately 90 %. Using this system, residence time when purchasing orshoplifting has been measured.In case of 2), behavioral records are measured by the voltage data detected fromthe IR sensor array. The experiment shows that sensors should be fixed on aceiling by bus arrangement. Specifically, up to about 10 sensors can beconnected in a bus line, and the interval between sensors should beapproximately 50 cm.The technique to analyze all recorded image has been applied to the seriouscrime such as homicide. A result of research shows that the method formulatedin this paper is well practicable. If the method formulated here is used, it is mucheasier to check security camera images every day, and undiscovered shopliftingmay be founded. The time for checking security camera images is between 17minutes and 33 minutes per day on the assumption of the following conditions.1) Residence time when purchasing or shoplifting: 10 seconds2) Passing time in front of one commercial product: 1 second3) The number of visitors: 2,000 per dayUsing the method formulated here, employee pilferage which has been missedcan be detected by analyzing whole data recorded all through the day. If a facerecognition system is integrated to the method formulated here, a salesclerk canbe alerted that a shoplifter comes to the shop. Also, if the system detectingshoplifting by behavior pattern matching is put into practice in the future, it willbe possible to detect shoplifting without shoplifters’ criminal records.

Two new species of cyclopoid copepod, Halicyclops setiformis and H. itohi, are described based on female specimens from the Tama River estuary in Tokyo Bay, central Japan. One of the defining characteristics of H. setiformis is the presence of a setiform lateral element on the third exopodal segment of legs 3 and 4. Among its congeners, only H. blachei Lindberg, 1952 has similar elements; H. setiformis differs from it in the shape of the third endopodal segment of leg 4. This new species is considered carnivorous based on the occurrence of a specimen biting a nematode and the presence of stout, claw-like spines on the oral appendages. The second new species, Halicyclops itohi, is distinguishable from most of its congeners in the absence of lateral protuberances on the genital double-somite, the absence of a terminal accessory seta on the caudal ramus, and a 3.4.4.3 spine formula on the third exopodal segment of legs 1-4. Congeners sharing these three morphological characteristics differ variously from H. itohi in their caudal ramus shape, urosomal frills, antennal setal number, medial elements of the third endopodal segment of leg 4, and/or the shape of leg 5. The hitherto known Halicyclops species from Japan are briefly reviewed, and a key to the Japanese species is presented to resolve previous questionable identifications.

The purpose of this work is to study the electric properties of graphite and the synthesis of a few layers graphite intercalation compounds (GIC). First, intercalation of Li between graphite layers was done by soaking the substrates into a 20 ml n-butyllithium solution. Second, intercalation of FeCl3 into the graphite was done by heating FeCl3 powder and graphite in the quartz tube. For Li intercalation, the appearance of an extra Bragg reflection at 23.7º indicates that Li atoms were intercalated between the graphene sheets in the specimen we grew. For FeCl3 intercalation, the (00l) Bragg reflection was caused by the FeCl3-GIC. Probably Iron Chloride was intercalated in graphite. In the Raman spectra of graphite and FeCl3-GIC, the G, D and 2D peaks were confirmed. Additional peaks only in the specimen of FeCl3-GIC were observed at 1605 cm-1 and 3415 cm-1. It is speculated that the peak is related to the intercalation of FeCl3 into the graphite.

Eilema属はヒトリガ科Arctiidae,コケガ亜科Lithosiinaeに属し,非常に種類の多いグループで,北米を除く各大陸に分布している.日本に分布しているEilema属の各種は互いによく似ているばかりでなく,♂♀でまったく違った翅形・色彩・斑紋を示す種もあって,これまでその同定,学名の適用に多くの誤りがあった.INOUE & YAMAMOTO (1961, Kontyu, Vol.29:72〜78)は特に学名の使用法が混乱している5種の整理を発表し,また,井上(1961,日本産蝶蛾総目録,6:626〜629)は日本産(琉球列島を除く)として12種を挙げている.本文では,上に述べた文献を中心として学名および和名を採用し,主に♂交尾器の形態による既知12種の分類を試みた.♂交尾器は,最も信頼できる種の区別点を示すがcornutusの形や数には個体変異があり,ことに小さな骨片から成る場合は,その数が必ずしも一定していないので,この点は注意しなければならない.日本産のみについて比較すれば,この属の♂交尾器は,全体としてよくまとまっているが,E. cribrata STAUDINGERヒメキホソバだけが,かなり異質的なvalveを持っている. Juxtaの形態から,この属は2つのグループに大別できる. 1.Juxtaは骨化の強い角状の突起をなす:E. degenerella WALKERシロホソバ, E. fuscodorsalis MATSUMURAヤネホソバ, E.japonica LEECHキマエホソバ, E. minor OKANOニセキマエホソバ, E. coreana LEECHヒメキマエホソバ, E. griseola aegrota BUTLERキシタホソバ, E. okanoi INOUEミヤマキベリホソバ. II. Juxtaの骨化はいっそう弱く,両側にある1対の棒状骨片は,種によって中央で,融合するが,決して角状の突起とならない.このグループはvalveの形から史に2つに分けられる. 1,ValveはEilema独特の形で, harpeが先のとがった角状の突起:E. nankingica DANIELヒメツマキホソバ, E. tsinlingica DANIELキムジホソバ, E. depressa pavescens BUTLERムジホソバ, E. laevis BUTLERツマキホソバ. 2.Valveには角状のharpeがなく,先端部は丸味をもち,帯状に小針状物が並んでいる:E. cribrata STAUDINGERヒメキホソバ.翅脈にはかなり個体変異があるが,前翅に小室をもつのはE. depressaどlaevisだけで,両種ともその特徴は安定していない.脈8と9は有柄だが, E. japonicaだけは合して1本の脈となっている.脈11が12と完全に離れているのはE. fuscodorsalisだけで,他の種では12と接するが翅頂まで,または短距離の間結合する.
