Since the 1890s, Japanese movie-goers have engaged American cinema in a wide consumer marketplace shaped by intense media competition. Early fandom grew around educated urban audiences, who avidly patronized action-packed serials and Universal’s freshly imported films in the 1910s. During the 1920s and 1930s, U.S. cinema continued to attract metropolitan consumers but struggled in the face of Japan’s soaring narrative output. In the years following World War II, movie-goers encountered American films in big cities as well as provincial communities through the Occupationbacked Central Motion Picture Exchange. After the Occupation, U.S. film consumption began to slow down in theaters because of Japanese cinematic competition, but the sites of reception extended into television. The momentum of American cinema revived on the big screen with the rise of the blockbuster, though the years after the 1970s witnessed an intense segmentation of consumer taste. While U.S. cinema culture has become widely available via television, amusement parks, consumer merchandise, and the Internet, the contemporary era has seen renewed challenges mounted by domestic productions and alternative sources of popular entertainment.

Spontaneously Running Tokushima Shikoku (SPORTS) rat is a hyperactive rat strain. However, the causative mutation of this phenotype has not yet been identified. To investigate the molecular basis for the unique phenotype of SPORTS rats, we examined gene-expression profiles by microarray analyses. Among adenylate kinase isozymes that maintain the homeostasis of cellular adenine nucleotide composition in the cell, only adenylate kinase 1 is highly up-regulated in both exercised and sedentary SPORTS rats compared with wild-type (WT) rats, 5.5-fold and 3.3-fold, respectively. Further comparative analyses revealed that genes involved in glucose metabolism were up-regulated in skeletal muscle tissue of exercised SPORTS rats compared with sedentary mutants, whereas genes related to extracellular matrix or region were down-regulated compared with WT rats. In brain tissue of sedentary SPORTS rats, genes associated with defense and catecholamine metabolism were highly expressed compared with WT rats. These findings suggest that genetic mutation(s) in SPORTS rat remodels metabolic demands through differentially regulating gene expression regardless of exercise. Therefore, the SPORTS rats are useful animal model not only for further examining the effects of exercise on metabolism but also for deeply studying the molecular basis how mutation affect the psychological motivation with spontaneous voluntary exercise phenotype. やまと隕石(j),(k)および(m)の中の希土類元素(REE),Ba,Rb,Srを安定同位体希釈法によって定量した.(j)については,任意に二つの部分をとって分析した(提供された試料は,やや粗い粉末試料だった).最も代表的な希土類元素相互存在度を示すと考えられるLeedeyコンドライトの値で規格化すると,(k)は最も小さい分化を示すが,Euによく見られる異常は別として,GdとDyとの間に不連続性が見られるのが特徴である.(m)と(k)は,成因的な関連が深いと判断された.(j)の二回の定量値の間には,興味深い,系統的な差がある.(m)と(k)との関連,および(j)の内部的分化は,共に,もとの母体小惑星内での溶融と結晶分化の効果を強く示唆すると解釈できる.

Adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) are promising cell sources for regenerative medicine due to the simplicity of their harvest and culture; however, their biological properties are not completely understood. Moreover, recent murine and human studies identified several functional subpopulations of ADSCs varying in differentiation potential; however, there is a lack of research on canine ADSCs. Cystine transporter (xCT) is a stem cell marker in gastric and colon cancers that interacts with CD44 to enhance cystine uptake from the cell surface and subsequently accelerates intercellular glutathione levels. In this study, we identified a ~5% functional subpopulation of canine ADSCs with xCT+ expression (xCTHi). Compared with those of the xCT− subpopulation (xCTLo), the xCTHi subpopulation showed a significantly higher proliferation rate, higher expression of conventional stem cell markers (SOX2, KLF4, and c-Myc), and higher expression of adipogenic markers (FABP4 and PPARγ). By contrast, the xCTLo subpopulation showed significantly higher expression of osteogenic markers (BMP1 and SPP) than xCTHi cells. These results suggest xCT as a candidate marker for detecting a functional subpopulation of canine ADSCs. Mechanistically, xCT could increase the adipogenic potential while decreasing the osteogenic differentiation potential, which could serve as a valuable target marker in regenerative veterinary medicine.

Bunching onion [Allium fistulosum L. (Liliaceae)] secretes mucus in the cavities of its green leaves. The effects of the mucus, which is consumed as food, were examined. The mucus augmented the production of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and monocyte chemotactic protein (MCP)-1 from RAW 264 cells and of interleukin (IL)-12 from J774.1 cells; however, extracts from green leaves and white sheaths did not. An oral administration of this mucus to mice augmented the immune functions of peritoneal cells by increasing TNF-α and IL-12 production and phagocytosis. It also augmented interferon (IFN)-γ production from spleen cells and natural killer (NK) activity. These results suggest that an oral administration of the A. fistulosum mucus can enhance natural immunity.

Objective: To assess the effect of manual lymph drainage (MLD) on pain in Japanese patients up to 10 days after a total knee arthroplasty (TKA).Methods: This study was a randomized controlled trial performed at a University Medical Center. Patients who underwent unilateral TKA and received once daily MLD for 20 minutes prior to standard physical therapy up to 10 days after TKA were investigated. Pain at rest, knee extension muscle contraction, and maximum load were assessed using the visual analog scale (mm) before surgery, after drain removal, and after the fifth MLD. As secondary outcomes, the circumference, range of motion, muscle strength, walking speed, and walking rate were evaluated.Result: Forty-one patients aged 45-85 participated in this study, 21 of whom were assigned to the intervention (MLD group) and 20 who were not (control group). Ten days after TKA, no significant difference was evident between the MLD and control groups for resting pain [4.5 mm (1.6-10.8) vs 7.0 mm (1.8-25.5), respectively, p=0.17], pain during knee extension muscle contraction [12.3 mm (4.5-24.8) vs 20.8 mm (6.4-31.8), p=0.41], and pain at maximum load [13.0 mm (8.3-39.8) vs 16.0 mm (4.6-32.5), p=0.73]. There were no significant differences between groups in terms of secondary outcomes.Conclusion: This study shows that MLD up to 10 days after TKA does not affect pain.

TP0446131, developed as an antidepressant agent, was found to cause lenticular opacity in a 13-week repeated-dose study in dogs. Histopathologically, the lenticular opacity was observed as a degeneration of the lens fibers, characterized by irregularity in the ordered arrangement of the fibers which is necessary to maintain the transparency of the lens, and was considered to manifest clinically as cataract. To evaluate the development mechanism of the lenticular opacity, the chemical constituents of the lens, which is known to be associated with the development of cataract, were examined. The results of liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis revealed an increase in the amplitudes of 3 unknown peaks in a dose- and time-dependent manner in the lens, with no remarkable changes in the other chemical components tested. In addition, the content of cholesterol, alterations of which have been reported to be associated with cataract, remained unchanged. The mass spectral data and chromatographic behavior of the 3 peaks indicated that these peaks corresponded to sterol-related substances, and that one of them was 7-dehydrocholesterol, a precursor of cholesterol biosynthesis. This finding suggested that TP0446131 exerts some effects on the cholesterol biosynthesis pathway, which could be involved in the development of the cataracts. Furthermore, increases in the levels of these sterol-related substances were also detected in the serum, and were, in fact, noted prior to the onset of the cataract, suggesting the possibility that these substances in the serum could be used as potential safety biomarkers for predicting the onset of cataract induced by TP0446131.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to measure the effect of structural components on walking ability by conducting tests using subjects who used combined rollator-wheelchairs and walking aids in their daily lives. [Subjects] Ten residents living in a health care facility for the elderly who required walking aids participated in this study. [Methods] We measured maximum walking speed (MWS), step length, cadence and conducted the shuttle stamina walk test (SSTw), and the timed up-and-go test (TUG) under three conditions (rollator with forearm support, rollator with handgrip and cart). [Results] There were significant differences among the conditions with forearm support providing the best results in terms of MWS, step length, cadence, SSTw and TUG, showing in improved walking abilities of walking speed, endurance and dynamic balance. [Conclusion] These results show that therapists should advocate using rollators with forearm support as a safe method of expanding the range of walking activities for elderly who use walking aids or rollator-wheelchairs in their daily lives.

A case of true hermaphroditism was reported, in which bilateral ovotestes were found, drumstick was positive in 12 out of 500 polymorphous leukocytes of peripheral blood stream, and the chromosome karyotype was 46 XX.Fifty cases of true hermaphrodites reported in Japan were reviewed and briefly discussed.Grateful acknowledgement is made to Prof. H. Type 2 diabetes, which is characterized by a combination of decreased insulin secretion and decreased insulin sensitivity, can be delayed or prevented by healthy lifestyle behaviors. Therefore, it is important that the population in general understands their personal risk at an early age to reduce their chances of ever developing the disease. A family history of hypertension is known to be associated with insulin resistance, but the effect of a family history of hypertension on the onset of type 2 diabetes has not well been examined. We performed a retrospective study examining patient age at the time of the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes by analyzing a dataset of 1,299 patients (1,021 men and 278 women) who had been diagnosed as having type 2 diabetes during a health checkup. The mean ± standard deviation of the patient age at the time of the diagnosis of diabetes was 49.1 ± 10.4 years for patients with a family history of hypertension and 51.8 ± 11.4 years for patients without a family history of hypertension (p < 0.001). A multivariate linear regression analysis showed a significant association between a family history of hypertension and a younger age at the time of the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, independent of a family history of diabetes mellitus and a male sex, suggesting that a positive family history of hypertension might be associated with the accelerated onset of type 2 diabetes.

Background:Heart rate (HR) reduction by β-blocker might not benefit patients with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) with atrial fibrillation (AF).Methods and Results:The J-CHF study was a prospective randomized multicenter trial that assigned 360 HFrEF patients to a 2.5 mg/5 mg/20 mg target dose of carvedilol. Carvedilol was uptitrated over 8 weeks and then the dose was fixed. Of 321 patients available for analysis, AF was identified in 65 (20%). Using the median absolute change in HR at 32 weeks (∆HR), the subjects were further divided into group A (∆HR >−6 beats/min) and B (∆HR ≤−6 beats/min). Both in sinus rhythm (SR) and AF, baseline characteristics and achieved carvedilol dose were similar between groups A and B. In SR, the time-dependent change in left ventricular EF (LVEF) and LV end-diastolic dimension (LVEDD) over 56 weeks was more favorable in B compared with A (∆LVEF, P=0.036; ∆LVEDD, P=0.047), and ∆HR was independently associated with ∆LVEF (P=0.040). Group B had a lower rate of the primary endpoint, defined as a composite of death and hospitalization due to cardiovascular causes including acute decompensated HF at 3 years (P=0.002). ∆HR was an independent predictor of the primary endpoint (P=0.01), but this was not observed in AF.Conclusions:Response to the carvedilol HR reduction might differ in HFrEF between SR and AF.
