Canine anaplasmosis is regarded as an infection by Anaplasma platys rather than zoonotic Anaplasma phagocytophilum in subtropical areas based on the assumption that the common dog tick species is Rhipicephalus sanguineus, which transmits E. canis and presumably A. platys. We investigated asymptomatic dogs and dog ticks from 16 communities in Nantou County, Taiwan to identify common dog tick species and to determine the prevalence of Anaplasma and Ehrlichia spp. Of total 175 canine blood samples and 315 ticks, including 306 R. sanguineus and 9 Haemaphysalis hystricis, 15 dogs and 3 R. sanguineus ticks were positive for E. canis, while 47 dogs and 71 R. sanguineus ticks were positive for A. platys, via nested PCR for 16S rDNA and DNA sequencing of selected positive amplicons. However, among the dogs and ticks that were positive to A. platys 16S rDNA, only 20 dogs and 11 ticks were positive to nested PCR for A. platys groEL gene. These results revealed the importance of searching for novel Anaplasma spp. closely related to A. platys in dogs and ticks. Seropositivity to a commercial immunochromatographic test SNAP 4Dx Anaplasma sp. was not significantly associated with PCR positivity for A. platys but with infestation by ticks carrying A. platys (P<0.05). Accordingly, R. sanguineus may be involved in transmission of A. platys but may not act as a reservoir of E. canis and PCR results for 16S rDNA could be a problematic diagnostic index for A. platys infection.

A four-year-old dachshund presented with a two-week history of pyrexia, depression, and cough. Four months earlier, the owner observed the dog swallow a whole popsicle stick, but the animal showed no clinical signs at that time. Radiography, ultrasonography, and computed tomography confirmed an intrathoracic linear foreign body and pleural effusion in the right thorax. The pleural fluid was bloody and purulent, and contained inflammatory cells and Escherichia coli. The dog was diagnosed with pyothorax induced by a foreign body, and was treated successfully by surgical removal of the foreign body, partial lung lobectomy, thoracic lavage, and antibiotics. The foreign body was identified as a popsicle stick that the dog had eaten.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of leg press and leg press with hip adduction exercise training on patellar alignment and pain in patients with patellofemoral pain (PFP). [Subjects and Methods] Seventeen patients participated in this study. Eight weeks of leg press or leg press with hip adduction training, including progressive lower-limb weight-training and stretching, was given. Patellar alignment (tilt and displacement) and pain measurements were conducted before and after leg press or leg press with hip adduction training. Patellar tilt angle and the bisect offset index were measured on axial computed tomography scans of the fully extended knee position with the quadriceps relaxed and contracted. Pain was assessed by using a 10-cm visual analog scale. [Results] No differences were found in patellar tilt and displacement with the quadriceps either relaxed or contracted after leg press and leg press with hip adduction. However, significant pain reduction was evident in both leg press and leg press with hip adduction. [Conclusion] The results indicated that patellar realignment does not appear to mediate pain alleviation. Furthermore, hip adduction in addition to leg press training had no additive beneficial effect on patellar realignment or pain reduction.

19nm製造プロセスを用い、シングルチップとしては最大容量となる128Gb 3-bit/cell NAND型フラッシュメモリを開発した。NAND型フラッシュメモリとしては最大のGb/mm^2である、チップサイズ170mm^2を実現した。3-bit per cellでありながら、All Bit-Line(ABL)アーキテクチャ、Air Gap技術、400MbpsトグルモードI/Oインターフェースの採用により、標準BCH ECCにおいても18MB/sの書き込みスループットを実現した。

Vertebrate Pax1 gene is a member of Pax gene family and encodes a transcription factor associated with crucial roles in the development of pharyngeal pouch, scletrotome and limb bud. In zebrafish, the genome contains two Pax1 paralogs, DrPax1a and DrPax1b, which share high sequence similarity with other Pax1 genes. To elucidate the function of zebrafish DrPax1b gene, we first examined the gene expression pattern and found that it was mainly expressed in the endodermal pharyngeal pouch, caudal somites, notochord, and fin bud. Then, we performed knockdown experiments using antisense morpholino oligonucleotides, which lead to the defects in the vertebral column, tail, pharyngeal skeleton, and pectoral fin. Additionally, we also found that the mouse MmPax1 mRNA, but not the amphioxus AmphiPax1/9 mRNA, could rescue the MO-induced defects. Furthermore, sequence alignment revealed that the N-terminal region of vertebrate Pax1 and amphioxus Pax1/9 were highly conserved, whereas their C-terminal regions were relatively divergent. However, the chimeric Am(N)Dr(C)Pax1, Mm(N)Dr(C)Pax1 and Dr(N)Mm(C)Pax1 mRNA could partially rescue the defects, while the Dr(N)Am(C)Pax1 mRNA could not. In conclusion, our data demonstrate a conserved function of DrPax1b in the development of the vertebral column, pectoral fin and pharyngeal skeleton formation in zebrafish and also provide critical insight into the functional evolution of Pax1 gene by changing its C-terminal sequence.

研究実績は主に以下の二編の論文があり、いずれも『東洋文化研究所紀要』に掲載される。その概要は以下の通り:1:「古音、方言、白話に託す言語ユートピア--章炳麟と劉師培の中国語再建論」章柄麟と劉師培は、清末の中国語現状に対する批判的見方に基づき、古音、方言、白話と注音方法という四大課題から構成された中国語重建論を提起した。章と劉の研究によって、古音の正統的地位は固められ、方言も低俗のイメージから解放され、両者はともに純正中国語の「一体両面」となった。方言から古音を遡り、そして、古音で方言を統一することは、彼らの独特の研究方法になったばかりではなく、彼らが目指した中国語改造の道となった。白話文学の伝統と地域差異を超えた言語標準は、その中国語改造論においても重要な資源となる。彼らの白話研究と論述は、その語言の均質性と言文一致の可能性に集中しており、それらは恰も古音と方言の弱点を補う形となった。章炳麟と劉師培の中国語再建論は、古音、方言、白話についての研究を尽くしてからはじめて建て直しを開始できるという長いプロセスであった。それは多大な研究実績を伴った周到な再建論であるにもかかわらず、今日の中国語の現状から見れば、もはや一種のユートピアにすぎない。2:「排満論再考」本稿は清末排満論が民族論から体制論へ転向する過程を研究対象とし、清末国学と辛亥革命の結果についてより合理的な解釈を与えようとする。初期排満論は民族浄化を鼓吹する復讐論であったが、清末の最後数年において、それが転向しなければならないところまで行き詰まっていた。『民報』対『新民叢報』の論争を経て、排満論はその「満漢」、「華夷」の対立論式を修正し、その排除範囲を漢民族官僚も含む特権階層に限定し、その基調は「排満」から「排清」へと転向した。章炳麟の建国理想と劉師培のアナーキズムはその転向を促成した重要な要因と考えられる。章炳麟と厳復、楊度の論争に至ると、問題の核心は満漢問題から、ナショナリズムとアイデンティティに移した現象が見られた。章炳麟はアメリカの現状から示唆を受けて、「中国人」を漢民族に等しい概念から「合漢満蒙回蔵為一体」の上層概念へと上げた。その上で、「文化」、「民族」、「国家」「三位一体」の新しい中国像を提示し、排満論の目的を「民族」から「民国」へと移行させた。そのような転向は清末国学にも影響を与え、その重心がより大きな幅で政論から学術研究へと傾み、民族問題は再び文化問題として帰着した。その結果として、辛亥革命は排満論の勝利ではなく、むしろ排満論の放棄を意味するものと考えられる。

Background: This cohort was established to evaluate whether 38-year radiation exposure (since the start of nuclear reactor operations) is related to cancer risk in residents near three nuclear power plants (NPPs).Methods: This cohort study enrolled all residents who lived within 8 km of any of the three NPPs in Taiwan from 1978 to 2016 (n = 214,502; person-years = 4,660,189). The control population (n = 257,475; person-years = 6,282,390) from three towns comprised all residents having lived more than 15 km from all three NPPs. Radiation exposure will be assessed via computer programs GASPAR-II and LADTAP-II by following methodologies provided in the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission regulatory guides. We calculated the cumulative individual tissue organ equivalent dose and cumulative effective dose for each resident. This study presents the number of new cancer cases and prevalence in the residence-nearest NPP group and control group in the 38-year research observation period.Conclusion: TNPECS provides a valuable platform for research and opens unique possibilities for testing whether radiation exposure since the start of operations of nuclear reactors will affect health across the life course. The release of radioactive nuclear species caused by the operation of NPPs caused residents to have an effective dose between 10−7 and 10−3 mSv/year. The mean cumulative medical radiation exposure dose between the residence-nearest NPP group and the control group was not different (7.69; standard deviation, 18.39 mSv and 7.61; standard deviation, 19.17 mSv; P = 0.114).

Aim: The safety concern of statins is still a major issue for Asians. The aim of this study is to compare the risk of statin-associated adverse events among potent statins.Methods: We included patients from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database who had been treated with atorvastatin, rosuvastatin, or pitavastatin and were without diabetes at baseline. They were classified into three groups: usual-dose statin (atorvastatin 10 mg/d or rosuvastatin 5–10 mg/d), high-dose statin (atorvastatin 20–40 mg/d and rosuvastatin 20 mg/d), and pitavastatin (2–4 mg/d). The primary endpoint is a composite of safety events, including hepatitis, myopathy, and new-onset diabetes mellitus (NODM). We matched age, sex, and year of recruitment among the three groups (n=50,935 in each group) and then used the multivariate Cox proportional hazards model to evaluate the relation between the safety endpoint and different statin groups.Results: After a mean follow-up of 3.08±0.83 years, the safety events occurred in 9.84% in the pitavastatin group, 10.88% in the usual-dose statin group, and 10.49% in high-dose statin group. The multivariate Cox proportional hazards model indicated that usual-dose statin and high-dose statin were associated with a higher risk of the composite safety events compared with pitavastatin (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR]: 1.12, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.08–1.17 for usual-dose statin and aHR: 1.06, 95% CI: 1.02–1.10 for high-dose statin). The risks of hepatitis requiring hospitalization and NODM were especially lower in pitavastatin group. Conclusions: Compared with atorvastatin and rosuvastatin, pitavastatin might be associated with a lower risk of safety events in Asians.

The Hong Kong democracy movement began with the Sino-UK Joint Declaration of 1984 on the future of the city after 1997. Among other things, the declaration defined for Hong Kong citizens a limited democracy to be put in place at some unspecified point in the post-1997 period. The scheme promised one-person-one-vote to elect all legislators and the chief executive, which sounded fine until one read the fine print. Described in broad terms with lots of discretionary power for Beijing to maneuver, the scheme reserved the privilege to introduce bills for the chief executive only. Elections for the latter would involve only a small number of candidates hand-picked by Beijing, rubber-stamped by a small electoral committee whose membership system was structured in strong favor of the government. Yet moving towards even this limited democracy proved to be a total failure. For all the 25 years after 1997, the government gave not one inch, even though the movement had impressive records of regularly turning out gigantic crowds—up to some 20% of the city’s population for a four-to-six-hour protest event, drawing from a 60% pro-democracy majority among the Hong Kong people. A major problem of this failure lay in the movement itself, which almost since its inception had adopted and held fast to the strategy of pressure politics, while basically remaining within the system as “loyal opposition”. That strategy involved garnering public opinion based on sheer supporter turnout in strictly peaceful, open and legal protests to force the government to grant concessions. That was a strategy that may well work in already democratic countries or even in non-democratic ones which had weak ruling classes. But in the case of the post-1997 Hong Kong, for the government—a highly capable one now backed by a strong, totalitarian government in Beijing, such pressure politics backed by public opinion no matter how strong could simply be ignored if the government still practiced some restraint. And when it had no more patience for those restraints, the whole movement could be wiped out in a short time, as actually happened after the proclamation of the National Security Law in 2020. The movement developed alternative strategies and approaches after the Umbrella Movement of 2014, but even though it gained incredible strength in the run-up to the explosive events of 2019, it was already too late.

This study explored a more precise association between androgens and glycolipid metabolism in healthy women of different ages. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and waist-to-hip ratio were used as body fat indicators. High-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein, triglycerides, and total cholesterol were used as lipid markers. Fasting blood glucose (FBG), fasting insulin, and the homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance were used to assess insulin resistance and glucose metabolism. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was used to measure androgen indicators, including testosterone, sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), free testosterone (FT), dihydrotestosterone (DHT), androstenedione (A4), dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS). DHEAS levels varied across age groups. Correlation analyses with Spearman’s coefficient showed that the free androgen index correlated positively with WC (p = 0.040), FT correlated positively with BMI (p = 0.033) and WC (p = 0.049), SHBG correlated positively with HDL (p = 0.013), and A4 correlated positively with FBG (p = 0.017). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that among healthful women aged 36–40 years, A4 increased with FBG, and SHBG increased with HDL. Even within healthy, nonobese women, lipid and glucose metabolism were robustly correlated with androgens. Yearly metabolic assessments are necessary, particularly for FBG and HDL, since these markers can predict the likelihood of hyperandrogenemia, enabling timely interventions.

With the gradually increase of the application of new energy in microgrids, Electric Spring (ES), as a new type of distributed compensation power electronic device has been widely studied. The Generalized Electric Spring (G-ES) is an improved topology, and the space limitation problem in the traditional topology is solved. Because of the mode of G-ES use in the power grid, a reasonable solution to the voltage loss of the critical section feeder is needed. In this paper, the voltage balance equation based on the feedforward compensation coefficient is established, and a two cascade control strategy based on the equation is studied. The first stage of the two cascade control strategy is to use communication means to realize the allocation of feedforward compensation coefficients, and the second stage is to use the coefficients to realize feedforward fixed angle control. Simulation analysis shows that the proposed control strategy does not affect the control accuracy of the critical load (CL), and effectively improves the operational range of the G-ES.

In this work two novel cationic lipids using natural tartaric acid as linking backbone were synthesized. These cationic lipids were simply constructed by tartaric acid backbone using head group 6-aminocaproic acid and saturated hydrocarbon chains dodecanol (T-C12-AH) or hexadecanol (T-C16-AH). The physicochemical properties, gel electrophoresis, transfection activities, and cytotoxicity of cationic liposomes were tested. The optimum formulation for T-C12-AH and T-C16-AH was at cationic lipid/dioleoylphosphatidylethanolamine (DOPE) molar ratio of 1 : 0.5 and 1 : 2, respectively, and N/P charge molar ratio of 1 : 1 and 1 : 1, respectively. Under optimized conditions, T-C12-AH and T-C16-AH showed effective gene transfection capabilities, superior or comparable to that of commercially available transfecting reagent 3β-[N-(N′,N′-dimethylaminoethyl)carbamoyl]cholesterol (DC-Chol) and N-[2,3-dioleoyloxypropyl]-N,N,N-trimethylammonium chloride (DOTAP). The results demonstrated that the two novel tartaric acid-based cationic lipids exhibited low toxicity and efficient transfection performance, offering an excellent prospect as nonviral vectors for gene delivery.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects millions worldwide and is expected to surge in prevalence due to aging populations. Frailty, characterized by muscle function decline, becomes more prevalent with age, imposing substantial burdens on patients and caregivers. This paper aimed to comprehensively review the current literature on AD coupled with frailty, encompassing prevalence, screening, assessment, and treatment while delving into the field's challenges and future trajectories. Frailty and AD coexist in more than 30% of cases, with hazard ratios above 120% indicating a mutually detrimental association.Various screening tools have emerged for both frailty and AD, including the Fried Frailty Phenotype (FP), FRAIL scale, Edmonton Frailty Scale (EFS), Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Clock Drawing Test (CDT), and General Practitioner Assessment of Cognition (GPCOG). However, none has solidified its role as the definitive gold standard. The convergence of electronic health records and brain aging biomarkers heralds a new era in AD with frailty screening and assessment. In terms of intervention, non-pharmacological strategies spanning nutrition, horticulture, exercise, and social interaction, along with pharmacological approaches involving acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEIs), N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonists, and anti-amyloid beta-protein medications, constituted cornerstones for treating AD coupled with frailty. Technological interventions like repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) also entered the fold. Notably, multi-domain non-pharmacological interventions wield considerable potential in enhancing cognition and mitigating disability. However, the long-term efficacy and safety of pharmacological interventions necessitate further validation. Diagnosing and managing AD with frailty present several daunting challenges, encompassing low rates of early co-diagnosis, limited clinical trial evidence, and scarce integrated, pioneering service delivery models. These challenges demand heightened attention through robust research and pragmatic implementation.

This letter proposes a Light Space Partitioned Shadow Maps (LSPSMs) algorithm which implements shadow rendering based on a novel partitioning scheme in light space. In stead of splitting the view frustum like traditional Z-partitioning methods, we split partitions from the projection of refined view frustum in light space. The partitioning scheme is performed dual-directionally while limiting the wasted space. Partitions are created in dynamic number corresponding to the light and view directions. Experiments demonstrate that high quality shadows can be rendered in high efficiency with our algorithm.

Hualian No. 4 wild bitter gourd (WBG) is a specific vegetable cultivated by the Hualien District Agricultural Research and Extension Station in Taiwan. WBG is commonly consumed as a vegetable and used as a popular folk medicine. However, few studies have demonstrated the effects of WBG supplementation on exercise performance, physical fatigue and the biochemical profile. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential beneficial effects of WBG extract on fatigue and ergogenic functions following physiological challenge. Three groups of male ICR mice (n=8 per group) were orally administered 0, 1 or 2.5 g/kg/day of WBG for 4 weeks. They were respectively designated the vehicle, WBG-1X and WBG-2.5X groups. WBG significantly decreased body weight (BW) and epididymal fat pad (EFP) weight. Concerning physical performance, WBG supplementation dose-dependently increased grip strength and endurance swimming time. Concerning anti-fatigue activity, WBG decreased levels of serum lactate, ammonia, creatine kinase and blood urea nitrogen, and economized glucose metabolism after acute exercise challenge. Glycogen in the liver and gastrocnemius muscle dose-dependently increased with WBG treatment. Concerning the biochemical profile, WBG treatment significantly decreased alanine aminotransferase (ALT), blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and urea acid (UA), and increased total protein (TP). Therefore, 4-week supplementation with WBG may decrease white adipose weight, enhance energy economy, increase glycogen storage to enhance exercise performance and reduce fatigue.

Electromagnetic interference has always been an important assessment indicator for the inspection of power intelligent Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Therefore, it is necessary to carry out a structure optimization study to improve the UAV’s anti-electromagnetic interference capability. This paper analyses the flight stability of the UAV at different heights under the strong magnetic environment of the dry-type transformer, and carries out structural optimisation of the rotary-wing UAV design against the standard non-magnetic environment. After simulation and comparison, the UAV’s anti-electromagnetic interference capability is significantly enhanced after structural optimisation. The research results of this paper can further expand the application scope of inspection UAVs and provide a strong technical guarantee for promoting the development of intelligent and automated power inspection.

The development of a dense chemical reaction blocking layer (CRBL) for micro-tubular solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) was the aim of this study. The electrochemical performance and stability of SOFCs were also investigated since they strongly depend on fabrication conditions for the electrolyte and CRBL layers. Slurries of two commercial Ce0.8Gd0.2O1.90 powders were prepared and deposited by dip coating onto micro-tubular SOFCs. The results indicate that the layer density and homogeneity are essentially determined by the width of particle size distribution (PSD) apart from the colloidal stability. Two methods were applied for achieving a narrow PSD additional to dispersion: grinding and centrifugation. Particles with a very narrow PSD obtained through centrifugation process could be sintered together even at 1300°C and a layer with a density close to 99% could be reached. In contrast, simple ultrasonic dispersion of powders diminished the distribution width insufficiently and gave porous layer. Impedance measurements showed clear relationship between GDC layer density and ohmic resistance of the cells which directly correlates to their performance with a power density 0.75 W/cm2 at 0.7 volt and OCV~1.06 V obtained at 850°C for the cells with the densest GDC layer.

Background: In Taiwan, infective native aortic aneurysms (INAAs) are relatively common, so the aim of present study was to demonstrate the comparative outcomes of endovascular repair for thoracic and abdominal INAAs.Methods and Results: Patients with naïve thoracic or abdominal INAAs managed with endovascular repair between 2001 and 2018 were included in this multicenter retrospective cohort. The confounding factors were adjusted with propensity score (PS). Of the 39 thoracic and 43 abdominal INAA cases, 41 (50%) presented with aneurysmal rupture, most of which were at the infrarenal abdominal (n=35, 42.7%) or descending thoracic aorta (n=25, 30.5%). Salmonella spp. was the most frequently isolated pathogen. The overall in-hospital mortality rate was 18.3%. The risks of in-hospital death and death due to rupture were significantly lower with thoracic INAAs (12.8% vs. 23.3%; PS-adjusted odds ratio (OR) 0.24, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.06–0.96; 0.1% vs. 9.3%; PS-adjusted OR 0.11, 95% CI 0.01–0.90). During a mean follow-up of 2.5 years, the risk of all-cause death was significantly higher with thoracic INAAs (35.3% vs. 15.2%; PS-adjusted HR 6.90, 95% CI 1.69–28.19). Chronic kidney disease (CKD) was associated with death.Conclusions: Compared with thoracic INAAs, endovascular repair of abdominal INAAs was associated with a significantly higher in-hospital mortality rate. However, long-term outcomes were worse for thoracic INAAs, with CKD and infections being the most important predictor and cause of death, respectively.
