Temporal correlation between atmospheric anomalies and earthquakes has recently been verified statistically through measuring VHF FM radio waves transmitted beyond the line-of-sight. In order to locate the sources of such atmospheric anomalies, we developed a VHF interferometer system (bistatic-radar type) capable of finding the arrival direction of FM radio waves scattered possibly by earthquake-related atmospheric anomalies. In general, frequency modulation of FM radio waves produces ambiguity of arrival direction. However, our system, employing high-sampling rates of the order of kHz, can precisely measure the arrival direction of FM radio waves by stacking received signals.(Communicated by Seiya UYEDA, M.J.A.)

本科研は、短大ファースト・ステージ論の現実的可能性を探り、短大教育の成果(アウトカム)を明らかにすることを目指している。まず、短期大学教育の成果とは、卒業生の多様な活躍の実態と、彼らの短大教育に対する評価であるとの仮説を立てた。この仮説を立証するために、卒業生を対象とした調査を実施し、その分析結果からは、短大教育の長所と短所が読み取れ、また、教育の点検と評価に活用された。本報告書は、「第1部研究の課題と背景」「第2部卒業生調査の分析」「第3部卒業生調査から短大教育の点検、改善へ」で構成されている。(本研究から得られた代表的知見)1.短期大学卒業後の職業や進学キャリアの形成に関する学科や卒年間での相違は顕著であった。卒業生全体では、卒業直後に正規職を得ることや、短大での専攻分野を活かした職業を継続することに困難な状況が見られた。2.卒業生調査の分析では、各短大の教育の点検・評価活動を実りあるものにするために、教育のアウトカム指標に関する7つの標準的な説明モデルを提示し、各短大のアウトカムと、規定要因モデルをもとに各短大で達成しうるアウトカムのレベルとを比較した。(今後の研究課題)1.短大卒業生調査の二次分析(大学・専門学校卒業者との比較などを中心に)2.短大卒業生に対するインタビュー調査の実施3.卒業生の採用先・社会活動状況に関するインタビュー調査の実施

The aims of this study were to improve the mechanical and chemical properties of conventional restorative glass ionomer cement (GIC) by adding hydroxyapatite (HAp) preparations with different characteristics, and to investigate the underlying reaction mechanisms. Fuji IX GP® was used as the control GIC. The experimental GICs consisted of four HAp-particles with different characteristics added at 8 mass% to Fuji IX-powder. All cements were prepared by mixing with Fuji IX-liquid (P/L=3.6). Four HAp-particles were analyzed, and then the mechanical strengths and the fluoride-ion- release-recharge-behaviors of five GIC groups were evaluated. The results of this study demonstrate that the addition of HAp particles with highly reactive properties such as high specific surface area can enhance the flexural strength and fluoride ion release properties of conventional restorative GIC. Our results further indicate that HAp functions as an adsorbent and an ion exchangeable agent, resulting in improved mechanical and chemical properties of GIC.

The palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction between different types of organoboron compounds and various organic halides or triflates in the presence of base provides a powerful and general methodology for the formation of carbon–carbon bonds. The Csp2–B compounds (such as aryl- and 1-alkenylboron derivatives) and Csp3–B compounds (alkylboron compounds) readily cross-couple with organic electrophiles to give coupled products selectively in high yields. Recently, the Csp–B compounds (1-alkynylboron derivatives) have been also observed to react with organic electrophiles to produce expected cross-coupled products. The overview of some of such coupling reactions is discussed here in this article.

Dolon village, located about 60 km from the border of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site, is known to be heavily contaminated by local fallout from the first USSR atomic bomb test in 1949. External radiation in Dolon was evaluated based on recent 137Cs data in soil and calculation of temporal change in the fission product composition. After fitting a log-normal distribution to the soil data, a 137Cs deposition of 32 kBq m-2, which corresponds to the 90th-percentile of the distribution, was tentatively chosen as a value to evaluate the radiation situation in 1949. Our calculation indicated that more than 95% of the cumulative dose for 50 y had been delivered within 1 y after the deposition. The resulting cumulative dose for 1 y after the deposition, normalized to the initial contamination containing 1 kBq m-2 of 137Cs, was 15.6 mGy, assuming a fallout arrival time of 3 h and a medium level of fractionation. Finally, 0.50 Gy of absorbed dose in air was derived as our tentative estimate for 1-year cumulative external dose in Dolon due to local fallout from the first USSR test in 1949.

A bow with horse tail hair is used to play the violin. New and worn-out bow hairs were observed by atomic force microscopy. The cuticles of the new bow hair were already damaged by bleach and delipidation, however the worn-out bow hairs were much more damaged and broken off by force, which relates to wearing out.

An experimental infection study was performed using pigeons reared for racing or meat production in Japan and clade 2.2 and 2.3.2 isolates of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza virus to evaluate the possible role of pigeons in virus transmission to poultry. In experiment 1, when 20 pigeons were intranasally inoculated with high or low viral doses, no inoculated pigeon exhibited clinical signs for 14 days. Drinking water and almost all swab samples were negative for virus isolation. Virus isolation was positive in 3 oral swab samples from 2 pigeons from day 2 through 4 postinoculation, but viral titers of positive samples were extremely low. Immunohistochemical analysis for virus detection was negative in all tissue samples. Along with seroconversion in a limited number of pigeons postinoculation, these results suggest that pigeons have limited susceptibility to the virus used for experimental infection. In experiment 2, when uninoculated chickens were housed with virus-inoculated pigeons, all pigeons and contact chickens survived for 14 days without exhibiting any clinical signs. According to serological analysis, the chickens did not exhibit seroconversion after close contact with inoculated pigeons. Our data suggest that the risk posed by pigeons with respect to the transmission of the H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza virus to poultry would be less than that for other susceptible avian species.

The optical conductivity of photogenerated solitons in quasi-one-dimensional halogen-bridged binuclear metal (MMX) complexes is investigated with particular emphasis on a comparison between the two family compounds R_4[Pt_2(pop)_4X]・nH_2O (X=Cl, Br, I ; R=NH_4, Na, K, ...; pop=diphosphonate=P_2O_5H_2^<2->) and Pt_2(dta)_4I (dta=dithioacetate=CH_3CS_2^-). Soliton-induced absorption spectra for the pop complexes should split into two bands, while those for the dta complex should consist of a single band.

In the presence of tritiated water (HTO), Escherichia coil NG30 was grown in sealed test tubes containing synthetic medium (M9-0.4% glucose-0.005% arginine), and cell growth was monitored by measuring medium turbidity. Catalase (60 μg/ml) was added to the medium to reduce HTO associated accumulation of H_2O_2. A positive correlation between increasing concentration of HTO in the medium and the growth suppression was seen. A similar trend was observed when cells were grown under continuous irradiation of ^<60>Co gamma-rays. The RBE of HTO beta-rays relative to gamma-rays was calculated from the accumulated doses to the cultures. It was found to be 1.7 when the growth was inhibited to 60% of the control, and increased with decreasing dose.

We have investigated the electronic structures of n- or p-type doped ZnO based on ab initio electronic band structure calculations. We find unipolarity in ZnO; n-type doping using Al, Ga or In species decreases the Madelung energy while p-type doping using N species increases the Madelung energy, in addition to causing substantial localization of the N states. Codoping using reactive codopants, Al, Ga or In, enhances the incorporation of N acceptors in p-type codoped ZnO. We find the delocalized states of N for p-type ZnO codoped with N and Al (Ga).

The original publication is available at www.springerlink.comauthorThe purpose of this study was to verify whether the accuracy of left ventricular parameters related to left ventricular function from gated-SPECT improved or not, using multivariate analysis. METHODS: Ninety-six patients with cardiovascular diseases were studied. Gated-SPECT with the QGS software and left ventriculography (LVG) were performed to obtain left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), end-diastolic volume (EDV) and end-systolic volume (ESV). Then, multivariate analyses were performed to determine empirical formulas for predicting these parameters. The calculated values of left ventricular parameters were compared with those obtained directly from the QGS software and LVG. RESULTS: Multivariate analyses were able to improve accuracy in estimation of LVEF, EDV and ESV. Statistically significant improvement was seen in LVEF (from r = 0.6965 to r = 0.8093, p < 0.05). Although not statistically significant, improvements in correlation coefficients were seen in EDV (from r = 0.7199 to r = 0.7595, p = 0.2750) and ESV (from r = 0.5694 to r = 0.5871, p = 0.4281). CONCLUSION: The empirical equations with multivariate analysis improved the accuracy in estimating LVEF from gated-SPECT with the QGS software.

Potent new biocides against both bacteria and fungi, 4,4'-(1,6-hexamethylenedioxydicarbonyl)bis(1-alkylpyridinium iodide)s (4DOCBP-6,n) (alkyl chain length, n=8,10,12,14,16 and 18) were synthesized. 4DOCBP-6,n is bis-quaternary ammonium compound (bis-QAC) and has a symmetrical dimeric structure which is composed of two alkylpyridinium iodides connected with a hexamethylenedioxydicarbonyl chain. 4DOCBP-6,10 and 4DOCBP-6,12 exhibited wide and effective antimicrobial spectra, compared with those of typical bactericides, N-dodecylpyridinium iodides (P-12) and benzyldimethyldodecylammonium chloride (BAC), or a popularly-used fungicide, 2-(4-thiazolyl)benzimidazole (TBZ). Their superior properties would be due to the unique dimeric structure which contains two active moieties in a molecule.

A fluorometric determination of H_2O_2 based on the formation of amprochrome was developed. Amprochrome is an oxidation product of amprolium, an agent used for treating coccidiosis of chickens, and has a strong fluorescence. Though potassium ferricyanide has been used for oxidizing amprolium, H_2O_2 is also considered to be useful for the reaction. The analytical procedure was as follows. To a sample solution containing a suitable quantity of H_2O_2,1 ml of amprolium (500 μg/ml), NaOH (10%) and peroxidase solution (20 units/ml) were added. The mixture was shaken for 45 min at room temperature and amprochrome produced was extracted with 10 ml of isoBuOH after saturating the solution with sodium sulfate. Relative fluorescence intensity of the separated isoBuOH layer was measured (excitation wavelength 400 nm and emission wavelength 460 nm) against that of 10^<-6>M quinine sulfate in 0.1 N H_2SO_4. The calibration plot was linear up to H_2O_2 0.2 μg/tube. On the basis of the proposed method, remaining H_2O_2 in Japanese noodles (udon) could be determined with a recovery of 82.4-108%.

We did an in vitro study on the bonding durability both to enamel and dentin of three fluoride-releasing enamel/dentin adhesive systems: experimental ABF and Imperva Fluorobond which are 2-step (self-etching primer+adhesive) systems, and Reactmer which is a 1-step (self-etching-priming-adhesive) system. The tensile bond strength was determined after 1 day and 1 year in 37℃ water. ABF showed high bond strength to enamel and dentin after 1 day. Although the bond strength to enamel was significantly degraded after 1 year, fractures were almost all cohesive failures in the bonding resin. Therefore, TBS values seemed to reflect the tensile strength of the bonding resin; the actual bond strength at the interface was probably greater than the values obtained from the tensile bond strength tests. Although Fluorobond had dentin bonding durability similar to ABF, its bond strength to enamel was inferior. Adhesive failures were mainly observed with enamel, indicating that the bonding durability to enamel was insufficient. In Reactmer, bond strengths both to enamel and dentin were significantly reduced after 1 year in water. The fractured surfaces were cohesive failures in the bonding resin for all specimens. These findings suggest that the bonding of ABF and Fluorobond to enamel and dentin was generally durable. The bond strength of Reactmer was less durable than the other two systems because of the fragile bonding resin.

This paper describes the development of a data convertion tool. It aims to simplify data converting processes, which consist of reading data, converting data, filtering data, and outputting the resulting data. Every phase of converting data can be easily customized by writing plug-in modules with simple rules.

Author name is an important access point for academic information. But academic information systems do not always control the author name. Above all, the format of author names varies from system to system. We must resolve this problem to develop an institutional repository (NAGOYA Repository). Our plan is to develop a system of resolving author name in order to connect systems with one another. This resolution system links existing systems via author name with minimum customization. This paper describes our approach, outline of the system and the remaining issues.

シロウリガイ類は深海から採集すると通常2, 3日しか生存せず, 飼育を試みた報告は皆無であった。本研究では, シロウリガイ類の飼育の試みとして, 良好な健康状態で採集し, かつシロウリガイ類の共生細菌のエネルギー源(泥中の硫化水素)を確保するために, 圧力以外の現場環境をできる限り維持した状態で採集する装置のMTコアを開発した。また, シロウリガイ類は高酸素濃度に弱いため, 溶存酸素濃度制御装置により低酸素濃度環境を維持する飼育システムを製作した。シロウリガイとエンセイシロウリガイをそれぞれ相模湾初島沖水深1,150m~1,160mの地点, 石垣島沖の黒島海丘の643mの地点で採集した。採集したシロウリガイは約1週間で死亡したが, 黒島海丘のエンセイシロウリガイは17日間生存した。また, エンセイシロウリガイでは2回放卵が確認された。以上のことから, エンセイシロウリガイは飼育が容易な種と考えられた。
