The magnitude of mechanical stress at the shoulder and elbow appears to be directly correlated with the degree of maximum shoulder external rotation (MER) during throwing. Therefore, it is very important to prevent excessive MER to minimize the risk of throwing injuries. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between MER during throwing and the kinematic parameters of throwing mechanics, shoulder muscle strength, and shoulder range of motion in high school baseball players. The subjects were 40 male high school baseball players with no elbow or shoulder joint problems. Three-dimensional analysis was performed to calculate the MER angle. Then, the shoulder and elbow angles at initial foot contact (IFC) were computed. ROM and muscle strength of shoulder joint were also measured in each subject. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to relate the MER angle to these factors. Significant correlations were observed between the MER angle and the external rotation (ER) angle (r=&minus;0.51, p<0.001) at IFC, and the ER range of motion (r=0.84, p<0.01). The MER angle significantly correlated with shoulder internal rotation (IR) at IFC. This finding suggests that stress on the shoulder and elbow could be increased by the degree of shoulder IR angle at the moment of IFC. Further, excessive ER range of motion may also be a risk factor.

In the present research, first we evaluated the association between urban area size and commuting modes with physical activity among working people. Then we investigated the longitudinal effects of urban area size and commuting modes on increased physical activity due to health guidance intervention. The subjects were 401 male employees (aged 46.3±7.8) of A corporation, and were split into two groups, metropolitan area group (N=235) and local area group (N=166), based on the population density of place of work. IPAQ-E was used for evaluation of walking environments, and physical activity was assessed using pedometers. The intervention consisted of an exercise-focused health guidance over the course of one year. The cross-sectional study admitted that in comparison with the local area group the metropolitan area group had more than physical activity (p<0.01). Not only the size of urban area but commuting modes were significantly related to the level of daily physical activity (p<0.001). In longitudinal study, regarding the effects of the intervention for the physical activity, the study showed the possibility that urban area size was not directly effective but traffic safety in residential area (p<0.05) and willingness to take a walk (p<0.01) were effective. The cross-sectional study suggested that the size of the urban area and commuting modes had independently an effect on the physical activity of working people. The longitudinal study, on the other hand, suggested that the size of the urban area and commuting modes may not any direct influence on the effects of physical activity intervention.

【Purpose】A leg press generally included in a weight training program to develop the quadriceps. However little is known about the mechanism of the load in lower extremity by the different knee alignment. The purpose of this study is to compare the muscle activity in the different knee alignment during leg press exercise. 【Methods】Four normal knee and Five genu varum performed the leg press using three stance of narrow, medium and wide stance with the load of 75%/1 RM. Surface EMG date were collected (l000Hz) from vastus medialis (VM), vastus lateralis (VL), rectus femoris (RF), adductor longus (AL), biceps femoris (BF), tibialis anterior (TA), gastrocnemius (GAS), soleus (SOL). Integrated EMG (iEMG) values were calculated for each muscle during each rep. A video camera recorded the performing form during leg press from the frontal plane. 【Results and Discussion】As the leg press was to strengthen of the thigh muscle, VM, VL and RF of both groups worked strongly. However SOL of genu varum worked as strong as the level of activity of the thigh, iEMG of the SOL showed low value significantly by using wide stance. When the genu varum group performed maximal knee flexion using the narrow, their ankle was valgus on the video screen. This result may become cause of SOL higher activity during leg press. From this we can derive the argument that it will be necessary to take that stance into consideration when athletes who are genu varum performs leg press. (Jpn. J. Phys. A study was conducted to evaluate the chronic effects of regular physical activity on nonspecific and specific immune responses. Male Fischer rats (SPF) exercised voluntarily on running wheels for 4 months, and were then injected intraperitoneally with sheep red blood cells (SRBC), followed by measurement of the host defense functions at -2 d, 3h, 24h and 4 d of antigen stimulation. The following results were obtained:<BR>1) The ability of circulating neutrophils to produce superoxide measured by the spontaneous NBT test showed an earlier and higher (p<0.05) rise after SRBC injection in the exercise group, suggesting that neutrophils were activated <I>in vivo</I> more promptly against foreign-body invasion. This might reflect a priming response of neutrophils at the early phase of SRBC-induced host defense reactions modulated by the previous regular exercise.<BR>2) The ability of neutrophils to produce superoxide in response to <I>in vitro</I> stimulation with <I>Staphylococcus aureus</I> 209 P was markedly reduced during inflammatory response in the sedentary group, whereas that in the exercise group was maintained at a constant level. The value at 4 d after SRBC injection in the sedentary group was decreased to more than 20% below the baseline (p<0.02) . In addition, a significantly (p<0.02) lower value than that in the exercise group was shown, although phagocytic activity was similar in the two groups. This suggested that neutrophil bactericidal activity was decreased in the sedentary group.<BR>3) Plasma IgG levels in the exercise group were consistently and significantly (p<0.0001) higher by about 30% than those in the sedentary group, regardless of SRBC injection. This suggested an enhanced host defense status by regular exercise.<BR>4) The specific humoral immune response to SRBC injection was assessed in terms of hemagglutination and plasma IgM levels, but no significant differences were shown between the groups.

最近.肺機能検査法が新たに注目をひき.肺機能障害を伴う諸疾病における意義が強調されるに至つた。1.著者は.軽.中.重作業に從事する.20〜55才健常男子1074人につき.肺活量および最大換気量.同時に身長と体重を測つた。2.肺活量および分時最大換気量と体型との相関では.体表面積との相関が最大で.年令との関係は.肺活量よりも分時最大換気量との相関の方が大であつた。3.年令別の肺活量および分時最大換気量をうるための回帰方程式は.肺活量(cc):〔2847.6-(13.28×年令)〕×体表面積(m^2)最大換気量(l/min):〔88.01-(0.530×年令)〕×体表面積(m^2)(ただし20〜55才.らち最大換気量の20〜28才は.73.3×体表面積)であつたが.本推定値をうるに便利な計算図表を作成した。4.本回帰方程式を用いた.気流速度指数(Gaensler)の応用価値.臨床的意義および産業衞生への応用さらに肺機能の老人化の問題などを最後に論じた。

第19回全日本大学駅伝に出場した山形大学の中・長距離選手を被験者にした本研究では, V^^・O_2max及びATと競技成績との関係について, 各走記録間に高い相関を示し, しかも, V^^・O_2maxよりもATの方かより高い相関を示すことが明らかとなった。また, 選手の現在の競技成績を予測する上でも重要な指標として評価できるといえる。
