The purpose of this study is to show the possibility of preservation and revitalization method of the shopping side alley which located in the old town Tokyo. 17 neighborhood shopping streets were selected in the Tokyo wards areas which have above 20% of share for aged residents in the population. 17 streets were categorized into 6 pattern of shopping street space structure systems. Inherent characteristics are showed that shopping side alleys which called Yokochou-shoutengai are served daily necessaries to residents especially aged peoples who live in the convenient walking distance to the alleys. It is necessary to maintain the inherent characteristics of the Yokochou side alley that residents cultivate the alley space as their communication space for the community.

To facilitate the workshop as a place for cooperative learning is a technique to support dialogues among participants of the workshop.The results of research and analysis on participants' intrinsic motivation are as follows.1. Participants' intrinsic motivations are grown and their consciousness and ability to act are changed by supporting their dialogues with emphasis on their competency and autonomy.2. Nine learning activities are developed with respect to each of three layers in the learning steps. The more participants achieve learning activities, the more they grow and change in their consciousness and activities.

This paper introduces the Aratama-suido-zu (“zu” meaning original blueprints) proposal for the Aratama-suido project to supply water in Tokyo’s Aratama District. Construction began in 1926, but in 1927, Japan’s government called for the project to be scaled back. The revised Aratama-suido was presented in the 1931 Aratama-suido-shi (“shi” meaning official document). The Aratama-suido-shi noted the number and locations of the project’s buildings in both the original and revised plans, but not the original designs for the buildings. This has made it difficult to compare them with the final designs, though attempts have been made (Masuda, 2006). The author clarifies the original designs, revealing how the engineers’ thought processes evolved.

The outputs of weather and climate models have been used in various application fields. For example, future weather data for the building energy simulation (BES) can be provided based on a climate model prediction. However, as the model output has systematical errors (called the bias), some type of bias correction is necessary in order to use the model output for an application field. For temperature or humidity, we often assume normal distribution and correct bias using statistical parameters, such as the average and the standard deviation. However, for solar radiation, a bias correction method (BCM) that uses only the average and standard deviation is insufficient and can result in negative values after bias correction. Consequently, the solar radiation bias is often corrected using only its average. In general, climate models can accurately predict the daily maximum amount of solar radiation on clear days at a given site because solar radiation depends mainly on its geolocation (latitude, longitude, and elevation) and the season (solar altitude). However, it is difficult to model cloud physics processes accurately to establish the weaker amounts of solar radiation on cloudy days. As a result, when we correct the solar radiation bias using only the average value, the daily maximum value deviates from the observed results instead of correcting the average. In this paper, we present a method called quantile mapping (QM) for the bias correction of solar radiation to provide the bias corrected weather data for the BES. The QM has been developed mainly for the correction of precipitation or temperature biases, although there are few studies that apply QM to the correction of solar radiation. In previous studies, QM was applied to the daily or monthly average. However, for the BES, the daily maximum value is also as important as the daily or monthly average, because the peak energy load depends mainly on the daily maximum. In this study, we also applied QM to obtain the daily maximum amount of solar radiation. In addition, we conducted BESs using the bias corrected weather data and evaluated the efficiency of each BCM. From the simulation results, the average energy consumption did not differ according to the difference in the BCM. However, the simulation that used the weather data corrected by only the monthly average could not predict the maximum cooling load; it was underestimated by 12%. Conversely, the simulation with the data corrected by QM, which used either the daily cumulative or the maximum amount of solar radiation, could predict the maximum cooling loads, which were under estimated by only 6% and 2%, respectively.

Natsujima (Tonoas) in the Truk (Chuuk) Islands was the geographical center of Japanese Micronesia (Nan'yo Gunto) where the original administrative headquarters was established in 1914. Without any large-scale industries, Japanese population in Truk remained small for years. However, conditions drastically changed after the mid-1930s when the Navy began to fortify the islands as the chief naval base in the Pacific for World War Two. This paper examines the Japanese settlement process in Truk and the urban morphology of Natsujima as well as the life of Japanese and Trukese in Natsujima-cho, during prewar and early wartime years. It also discusses the features of bonito fishery bases operated by Okinawans in small and dispersed settlements in Truk.

Since 'munafuda's (dedication boards) are usually written at the time of putting up the ridge-beam of holy buildings. 'joto tatematsuru' (we dedicate this building in deep reverence) might be the most appropriate description. In actuality, however, this description constitutes only few percentage. According to these munafudas, these percentages show that the peak of the constructions was under way March and Spring, and August and September. But since the dates were written at the time of dedicating the building, we must assume that the construction works were already under way in spring, or further back in winter and summer, sometime during the off-season on the farm; that is, after the harvest and before the rice-planting time. In this conection, 'Daisho-tekagami' mentions, "January, July, October, November, and December are auspicious months for building a pole of the sate" ; meaning that the three months in winter except January and July correspond to the slack season on the farm when more helping hands are available.

In this paper we tried to place all of design elements except buildings in urban design by classifying them. So we considered a change of function that urban spaces have been needed by design elements since MEIJI period till now. It was found that a change of function falls roughly into three categories. And respective forms of elements have been changed with a change of function. Accordingly we defined the term "Street Furniture" as all of design elements except buildings that are related to human out door life in urban spaces.

Our regional images are composed of many evaluations about the various kinds of elements or activities within different regions. In quantitative terms, the extraction of regional images is difficult. In this paper, we focus on a phenomenon in which a part of regional image is reflected in the names of buildings. In the first instance, a model based on the random utility theory is constructed to describe the spatial distribution of buildings names. Secondly, the proposed model is calibrated using actual data from the city of Tokyo (Setagaya Ward), and the effects of such regional elements or activities on regional images are then estimated. Finally, values for the regional images are quantitatively estimated and their spatial distribution is represented on a map.

The main object of this study is to clarify one of the morphological character of Mckim, Mead & White's works through the analysis on the plan of the Villard Houses in comparison with Low Library we have already analyzed. The following results are made clear. The configuration of the plan is designed by overlapping a double square and a Greek cross. 6 kinds of squares which are composed on a simple proportion can be found as datum line in deciding the shape of the central court and boudary walls between residential units. The walls in each house are designed based on combination of grid and square. This compositional principle is also reflected on facede.

The constructions of most of the early gothic cathedrals were started under the reign of Louis VII. This paper investigates the actual relationship between Louis VII and the construction of the cathedrals. Regarding the finances of the constructions, Louis VII gave economic aid in some case, but they weren't the great patronages. As for his power of ruling over the "royal bishopric", it reduced under his reign. Thus. Louis VII wasn't the great patron of the early gothic style. The fact that the king renounced his right to deprive the bishops' possessions might help the construction of the gothic cathedrals.

This shows how land readjustment was promoted before the War, that is, the process from the organization to the dissolution of the association. Moreover, it shows that the private developers exsited in Suminoe District and how the housing management was. They persuaded the landowners and organized the association. They obtained a great deal of land in advance for the purpose of housing management. It was Mr. Gensuke TAKENAKA, the second president of Takenaka Shoten Co. Ltd., that organized the association. He established Takenaka Suminoe Tochi-bu and started the housing management. He sold and rented the houses and land. But he didn't succeed in selling the houses, so he engaged in renting the houses. Tujiei Jyutaku Keiei-bu participated in the association as well as Takenaka Shoten Co. Ltd. Tujiei Jyutaku Keiei-bu managed mainly the houses and land for rent. Both Takenaka and Tujiei managed over 100 houses with architects. The homes introduced the new idea of a residential housing.

This study is aim to consider the factor of forming pedestrian network and of establishing sustainable maintenance and management around Osaki Station. Osaki area has had traffic connection problems around Osaki Station and not had enough area of open space, before the redevelopment project in 1980s. The large-scale pedestrian network formed by pedestrian walkways to overcome the area’s geographic problems. Along with the redevelopment project the varieties of management forms in the pedestrian walkway around Osaki Station were formed.

This is a review to the article titled " Design Theme of Architects in "SHIN-KENCH1KU", one of pupular architectural journals of Japan, after World War II". Although the discussant is like to evaluate to this trial for the development of design theory and stream, some previous consideration to choose the data source that is SHIN-KENCHIKU'. The architectures and architects on this magazine are selected as a jounalistic sense time by time, then some kind of reason to choose this eccentric material should be explained.

Recently, the construction of the large astronomical telescope has been planned for better astronomical observation. In this project, it is necessary to design the structure of the telescope economically as well as easy to construct. Additionally homogeneous deformation of the supporting structure of the telescope is desirable to realize the stable supporting system of the main system of the telescope. However it is not so easy to design such structure, because the various tilt angle caused by the rotation of telescope for astronomical observation result in the large amount of the change in the external load. In this paper, the scheme of multi-objective optimal design for truss structures supporting large telescope are proposed and demonstrated in an actually constructed 3.8 m telescope. Using SPEA2 as multi-objective optimal method, where standard deviation of nodal displacements is adopted to evaluate homologous deformation, simultaneously satisfies the requirement of both weight minimization and homologous deformation.

In this study, it aimed to clarify about the housing problem and the environmental improvement at Yau Lai Estate, in order to grasp the present condition and the measure of HKHA public rental housing in Hong Kong. The aging-residents problem, the SARS problem and the environmental problem are the big issues in the newly developed project, the redevelopment project and the large-scale repair project in HKHA public rental housing in recent years. The measure for the universal design to the aging-residents problem, the hygiene supervision and living manners to the SARS problem and the energy saving, noise, and tree planting to the environmental problem have been taken in HKHA public rental housing.

Max Hinder (1887-1963), a Swiss architect, was born in Zurich on 20th of January, 1887. In 1924, after pursuing his career as an architect in Switzerland, Germany, Austria etc., he came to Japan. He resided in Sapporo for three and half years till 1927, where he worked on numerous houses including his own, two mountain huts, two missionary schools-the Fuji (1924) and the Hokusei (1929), the St. Franciscan monastery(1925), a cathedral in Niigata (1927) and other buildings, besides proposed a project for the architectural competition for the erection of a LEAGUE OF NATIONS BUILDING AT GENEVA in 1926. He moved to Yokohama in 1927 and continued his work untill the year of 1940, when he went to Germany. During these thirteen years, he designed the Jochi University (1931) and the St. Mary Hospital (1931) at Tokyo, a cathedral in Utsunomiya (1932) and others. He closed his earthly pilgrimage in Regen, a small town of Germany, in 1963.

This paper traces the factors from which establishment time differed at each elementary school by verifying the time background of the old in-the-city and old rural district in Kyoto at the initial stage of Meiji era. The time when feudal land ownership was dissolved was remarkably different from within Rakuchu and without Rakuchu. The gap between Rakuchu and Rakuchu mainly caused the gap that the Bangumi-elementary-school had the high rate of new building while the Guntyu-elementary- school had the high rate of temple diversion.

uthors determined the mite-allergen and fungal colonies in the floor dust collected from the dwellings in Seoul, Korea and in Koriyama, Japan which were located in the same geographical latitude. Measurements in Seoul were carried out in September, 1992 and in March, 1993 and the data were compared with those of Koriyama in the same periods. The average mite-allergen in Koriyama was 22 times as much as in Seoul for Der I and 33 times for Der II in September and 10 times for Der I and 74 times for Der II in March measurements. Those difference of mite-allergen in two locations seem to have resulted from the traditional "ondoru", floor heating and from the relatively lower humidity in Korea. Further comprehensive research is advised.

Recently, the area of wasting land, such as abandoned land, disposed refuse land, disposed material land is increasing,in suburban area. This background is the decline of farmland value by the serious situation of agriculture, and high demand for urban land use by facilities for travel. This paper clarify the diversity of wasting, categorizing wasting land, and analyzing the process of its wasting. Abandoned land can be categorizing in the view points of the curse of abandoning, attribute of land owner. Urban land can be categorizing in the view points of formation of wasting, attribute of land owner, maintenance worker.
