Background: Few studies have comprehensively evaluated the trends and factors associated with CR participation across major cardiovascular diseases in Japan.Methods and Results: This study performed a nationwide cross-sectional study using the National Database of Health Insurance Claims and Specific Health Checkups of Japan and the Japanese Registry of All Cardiac and Vascular Diseases and the Diagnosis Procedure Combination database. This study described the nationwide trends and evaluated patient- and hospital-level associated factors of CR participation for patients with acute heart failure (AHF), acute coronary syndrome (ACS), acute aortic dissection (AAD), peripheral artery disease (PAD), and after cardiovascular surgery using mixed-effect logistic regression analysis. Although the annual number of patients who underwent CR has increased during the study period, the total number of patients participating in outpatient CR was lower than that of inpatient CR. The outpatient CR participation rate was lower for patients with AHF (3.5%), AAD (3.2%), and PAD (1.7%), compared with ACS (7.9%) and after surgery (9.4%). Age, sex, body mass index, Barthel index, Charlson comorbidity index, and institutional capacity were identified as significant associated factors of CR participation in inpatient and outpatient settings.Conclusions: Participation in outpatient CR was still low, and higher age, multi-comorbidity, and low institutional capacity contributed to the lower outpatient CR participation rate. Identification of the associated factors may help cardiologists to increase CR participation.

We conducted textural and chemical analyses of melt inclusions and their host plagioclase crystals in the scoria of the Izu–Omuroyama monogenetic volcano, erupted at ~ 4 ka in the Higashi–Izu monogenetic volcanic field, Japan. The groundmass melt was andesitic with ~ 59–61 wt% SiO2, and it contained abundant microphenocrysts of olivine and plagioclase. In contrast, ~ 59% of the plagioclase–hosted melt inclusions have rhyolitic compositions with ~ 70–75 wt% SiO2. The host plagioclase phenocrysts have cores with An# of 44.7 ± 4.2 [An# = 100Ca/(Ca + Na) in mol] and rims with An# of 68–78, and the calcic rims have compositions similar to the microphenocrysts. The cores of the host plagioclase phenocrysts have FeO* and K2O contents that are in equilibrium with the rhyolitic melt inclusions. Using the plagioclase–melt geohygrometers and assuming temperatures of 790–850 °C, we estimated the H2O contents of the rhyolitic melt inclusions to be ~ 4.4–10.2 wt%, indicating H2O–saturation depths of >4.5 km. Our results suggest that an inhibited reservoir of plagioclase–bearing rhyolitic melt existed beneath the monogenetic volcano at the time of the scoria eruption, which was ~ 800 years earlier than the first rhyolitic eruption in the volcanic field. Plagioclase content in the silicic reservoir is estimated to be less than 35.8%, suggesting the magma was eruptible. Our results demonstrate the potential usefulness of plagioclase–hosted melt inclusions for indicating the existence of such an inhibited silicic magma.

Global warming is one of the most serious problems faced by humans. One method to decrease the Earth's temperature is to reduce solar irradiation by dispersing nanoparticles in the atmosphere. Submicron-diameter particles or aerosols scatter solar irradiation, whereas they are transparent to long-wavelength infrared radiation emitted by the Earth. This phenomenon has received attention in the discussions of the nuclear winter, which is an uncontrolled cooling of the global temperature. The objective of the present work is to examine the first-order approximation of the feasibility of controlling the global temperature without reducing the emission of greenhouse gases. We propose the controlled dispersion of nanoparticles into the stratosphere at an altitude of 30 km. A precise analysis of the radiative properties of particles in the solar spectrum and IR regions is conducted, and radiative transfer through the stratosphere-dispersed nanoparticles is approximated using a one-dimensional single-scattering model. Several types of nanoparticles are considered. The optimum size of the nanoparticles determined using the model is 350-450 nm. The dispersion of nanoparticles with a total mass of 3×107 tons into the stratosphere will reduce 3% of the solar irradiation. The blockage can be maintained by launching 10-ton projectiles 19 times per day from 100 launch sites.

Objective This study aimed to determine the prevalence and endoscopic features of zinc acetate dihydrate tablet-associated gastric lesions. Methods We retrospectively examined the endoscopic features of 47 patients taking zinc acetate dihydrate tablets who underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy. Results Gastric mucosal alterations, including redness, erosions, ulcers, and adhesion of the white coat, were observed in 29 of 47 patients (61.7%). Among patients with gastric lesions (group A), there was a significantly higher percentage of symptomatic patients in comparison to patients without lesions (group B) (65.5% vs. 22.2%; p<0.01). The background characteristics of the two groups did not differ to a statistically significant extent. On esophagogastroduodenoscopy, mucosal redness (n=27, 93.1%), erosions (n=26, 90.0%), adhesion of the white coat (n=25, 86.2%), and ulcers (n=9, 31.0%) were observed. None of the 19 patients who previously underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy had gastric lesions before starting zinc acetate dihydrate. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy was performed after the cessation of zinc acetate dihydrate intake in six patients, and revealed the resolution of gastric lesions. Conclusion Gastric lesions were observed in 29 of 47 patients who were taking zinc acetate dihydrate tablets. The most common endoscopic findings were mucosal redness (93.1%), erosions (90.0%), adhesion of the white coat (86.2%), and ulcers (31.0%). Although the exact pathogenesis is uncertain, we believe that understanding the unique manifestations of this gastric lesion will help physicians manage adverse events in patients taking zinc acetate dihydrate tablets.

Plants release specialized (secondary) metabolites from their roots to communicate with other organisms, including soil microorganisms. The spatial behavior of such metabolites around these roots can help us understand roles for the communication; however, currently, they are unclear because soil-based studies are complex. Here, we established a multimodal metabolomics approach using imaging mass spectrometry (IMS) and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to spatially assign metabolites under laboratory conditions using agar. In a case study using Catharanthus roseus, we showed that 58 nitrogen (N)-containing metabolites are released from the roots into the agar. For the metabolite assignment, we used 15N-labeled and non-labeled LC-MS/MS data, previously reported. Four metabolite ions were identified using authentic standard compounds as derived from monoterpene indole alkaloids (MIAs) such as ajmalicine, catharanthine, serpentine, and yohimbine. An alkaloid network analysis using dot products and spinglass methods characterized five clusters to which the 58 ions belong. The analysis clustered ions from the indolic skeleton-type MIAs to a cluster, suggesting that other communities may represent distinct metabolite groups. For future chemical assignments of the serpentine community, key fragmentation patterns were characterized using the 15N-labeled and non-labeled MS/MS spectra.

This paper lists ethical and procedural points that the co-authors believeare crucial for both researchers and research subjects in the realm of queerstudies. While the definition of the term “queer(kuia)” in Japanese tendsto be broader and more ambiguous than in English because there is nostrict equivalent to “queer” in Japanese language, in this paper the authorsstart with the premise that Japanese-language research projects in thequeer realm tend to be interdisciplinary and tend to involve people whoidentify themselves as sexual minorities, commonly called “LGBT(lesbian,gay, bisexual, and transgender).” As such, research endeavors in the queerrealm have different kinds of difficulties and risks from those in otherrealms. Though each researcher usually belongs to another, moretraditional discipline such as sociology, art history, and literary studies,among others, in addition to queer studies, the existing guidelines andtextbooks in such traditional disciplines do not address the risks andproblems particular to research in the queer realm. As the first attempt in the Japanese language to “spell out” such queerrelatedrisks, issues, and also possible ways to alleviate them, this tentativeguideline nevertheless does not profess to be comprehensive or universal.Yet the authors believe that it is imperative for Japanese-language “queer”researchers to start to acknowledge specific risks and issues. In order tohelp the researchers(including graduate and undergraduate students),instructors(including the ones that are not at all aware of LGBT issues),research subjects or collaborators(who give interviews and provideinformational materials such as the back issues of self-published zines),this paper is organized in four categories. They are: 1)“what needs to beconsidered in the field of queer inquiry by both the researchers andresearch subjects,” 2)“what both the instructors and students of queersubject matter need to be careful about in the academic context,” 3)“important points about textual analysis of queer material,” and 4)“necessary procedures at the time of publishing and presenting the resultsof queer research topics.” This paper discusses the complex dynamicsbetween researchers and research subjects especially in cases in which theresearchers themselves are members of sexual minorities. In such cases,the researchers might encourage research subjects of the same minoritygroup to participate in their research without obtaining enoughinformation about the skill, scope and aim of the researcher and theresearch project. This paper also examines the differences between queerreadings and outing the artists and authors of the texts and representations,among many other issues.

Bacterial cells enhance the proliferation of neighboring cells under stress conditions by emitting a physical signal. Continuous single sine sound waves produced by a speaker at frequencies of 6–10, 18–22, and 28–38 kHz promoted colony formation by Bacillus carboniphilus under non-permissive stress conditions of high KCl concentration and high temperature. Furthermore, sound waves emitted from cells of Bacillus subtilis at frequencies between 8 and 43 kHz with broad peaks at approximately 8.5, 19, 29, and 37 kHz were detected using a sensitive microphone system. The similarity between the frequency of the sound produced by B. subtilis and the frequencies that induced a response in B. carboniphilus and the previously observed growth-promoting effect of B. subtilis cells upon B. carboniphilus through iron barriers, suggest that the detected sound waves function as a growth-regulatory signal between cells.

Using vital statistics data from 1995 to 2019, the relationships among interannual variations of total mortality, heat-stroke mortality, and temperature in summer were assessed in an attempt to estimate excess deaths in hot summer years in Japan. The number of deaths in July and August increased by 1.1% for each 1°C increment of summer mean temperature over Japan, with an eight-fold larger range of interannual variation than the more narrowly defined heat-stroke deaths. This fact implies that excess deaths due to heat are about eight times more prevalent than heat-stroke deaths and can be on the order of 10,000 in a hot summer year. Analyses by age group and cause of death indicated that excess deaths are largely associated with cardiovascular and respiratory diseases among elderly people.

On July 23, 1987, a very hot day, the largest wide-area power outage occurred in Kanto-Area, Japan. The cause was a voltage collapse on the bulk power network of Tokyo Electric Power Company, due to the abnormal rate of demand rising following resume after lunch break. Aggressive studies on voltage collapse throughout industry and university have led to great advances in power system stability. This essay describes the detail record of the outage, the applied countermeasures, and the inside story when the multiple voltage solutions of power flow on actual power system were found out for the first time.

【目的】 唐揚げにレモンを用いることで、さっぱり感が増すことと肉が柔らかくなることが一般的に知られている。そこで、(1)レモンの構成成分がさっぱり感にどのように影響を及ぼしているのか、また、(2)柔らかさを感じる最適な調理条件について検討した。 【方法】 (1)レモン果汁、レモン果汁と同酸度のクエン酸溶液、何もかけない市販惣菜唐揚げを用い、食べた時のさっぱり感について官能検査を実施し、まずは酸味の影響を確認。続いて、レモン果汁の主要構成成分である、酸味、香り、果汁感(コク)の存在がそれぞれさっぱり感にどのように影響しているのか官能検査にて検証。 (2) pHの異なるレモン果汁(pH2.5、3.0、3.5)に浸け込んだ鶏モモ肉を唐揚げにし、柔らかさおよび美味しさについて官能検査を実施。また、レモン果汁に浸け込んだ際の鶏モモ肉の保水量を確認。 【結果】 (1)レモン果汁、クエン酸溶液共にさっぱり感が増したが、レモン果汁の方がクエン酸溶液よりも有意に高く(P<0.05)、酸味以外の成分もさっぱり感に影響を及ぼしていることが示唆された。次に、レモン構成成分のさっぱり感についての役割を調べた結果、酸味、香り、コク共にさっぱり感が増し、中でも、香り、コクよりも酸味の影響が強かった(P<0.05)。 (2)pH2.5、3.0、3.5共に保水量が増加、事前にレモンに浸け込むことで柔らかい唐揚げに仕上がることが確認された。

Hurricane Katrina caused extensive damages to the Delta area including New Orleans. It was devastating for people who need special health care, especially pregnant women. They are considered one of the most vulnerable populations because they are susceptible to infections. It is no wonder that many writers are interested in pregnant women when they describe flood disasters in their novels. Both William Faulkner and Richard Wright wrote about pregnant women during the time of the Mississippi flood of 1927 in their works. In this paper, I would like to examine the descriptions of pregnant women by both writers, focusing on women's reproductive health issues in the 1920s and 1930s.

マウンテンバイクに使用されるディスクブレーキには1kHzの鳴きと,500Hzのビビリが発生する.この発生メカニズムを実験的に解明した結果,鳴きはロータ面内方向の負の勾配による摩擦自励振動であること,ビビリは鳴き現象にロータ面外方向の振動がロータの温度上昇に伴って重なり合った現象であることが明らかになった.
