ヒト由来のBifidobacterium 5菌種, すなわちB. in-fantis, B. breve, B. bifidum, B. longumおよびB. adolescentisを用い菌体内と菌体外のビタミン産生量を測定した1) 供試したBifidobacteriumのすべての菌株は菌体内にビタミンB1, B2, B6, B12, C, ニコチン酸, 葉酸およびビオチンを蓄積し, 菌体外にはビタミンB6, B12および葉酸を産生した。2) 菌種別ではB. longum, B. breveおよびB. in-fantisが比較的高いビタミン産生能を有していた。とくにB. longumはビタミンB2およびB6, B. breveはニコチン酸, B. infantisはビオチンにおいて高い産生能を示した。3) これらBifidobacteriumの産生するビタミン量は宿主としてのヒトのビタミン所要量と比較しても無視できない量であると考えられる。

Since ancient times, humans have used technology to extend their abilities. The author has been conducting research to establish design guidelines of technology that allows users to feel it as an extension of their own abilities while appropriately extending their motor actions. In this paper, we present a prototype system developed focusing on three abilities: throwing, balancing and power.

A being with multiple arms has been a fascinating motif that stimulates people’s imagination and has been expressed in myths, fiction, and creations from all over the world for a long time. On the other hand, it has only been in the last decade that attempts to engineer multiple arms attaching to the human bodies have been made in earnest in academics. In this paper, three studies are introduced that we have conducted so far on human augmentation using robotic arms, aiming to freely control the third and fourth arms. Based on the findings obtained through each research, we discuss the possible approaches to increase the number of arms by engineering and the issues involved.

In robotics, developments are in progress to enhance the physical and cognitive capabilities of humans by technologically extending the human body. The method of mapping the degrees of freedom of the operator’s arms and legs to the operating commands has been developed to control an extended body such as a wearable robot arm. On the other hand, the method has the limitation that the freedom of the operator’s limbs is constricted. Because the movements of the limbs are mapped to the actions of the wearable robot arm. In this article, a research project is introduced that uses virtual reality, wearable sensing technology, and machine learning to map human head movements and facial expressions to control an extended body that can be independent of the actions of human limbs.

This study attempts to identify response styles of Japanese students by cross-level and cross-national analyses. Tasaki and Ninomiya (2013) demonstrated the existence of an acquiescence response behavior of Japanese students based on the model by Billet and McClendon(2000), who measured latent response characteristics as “style factor.” In this study, we used a different response style measurement model proposed by Weijters, Schillewaert, & Geuens (2008) positing that response styles are psychological constructs and observed response style variables are summary indicators derived from sets of various, but independent, test items. Results of cross-national analyses indicated that Japanese and Korean participants were more likely to choose a mid-point response (MRS) and less likely to choose an acquiescence response (ARS) than American counterparts, but no significant difference was observed for an extreme response (ERS) among participants from the three nations. Within the Japanese response style model, cross-level analyses showed that ARS scores were significantly higher than ERS scores, indicating that Japanese participants had an acquiescence response style, consistent with the findings from Tasaki & Ninomiya (2013).

The origin of life must be studied through addressing a problem of the emergence of a free-energetically open complex system, rather than a problem of abiotic syntheses of various building blocks of life (Aono et al., 2015). One of the key aspects of the origin question is the origin of metabolism, since no (genetic) information may be preserved without ample and ordered materials supply. Thus, from the perspective of the origin of ‘proto-metabolism' we critically review currently prevailing approaches to the origin problem. Then, referring to the latest biological and geochemical findings, we will describe a scenario of the electrochemically driven emergence of ‘proto-metabolism' together with experimental proposals.
