The purpose of this article is to explore the relationship between Japan's Intervention in Siberia and the Rice Riot in Yamaguchi Prefecture. In August 1918, Able-bodied men from 20 ages from the Western area of Yamaguchi Prefecture was mobilized for the Intervention in Siberia. Following that, there were a number of Rice Riot in Japan, particularly in urban areas. While no Rice Riots occurred in Shimonoseki, the largest city in Yamaguchi Prefecture, the most violent riot in Japanese history occurred in the village of Ube, a coal mining region. In this article, the author looks at the relationship between Japan's Intervention in Siberia and the Rice Riot in Yamaguchi Prefecture through specific examples.

This essay attempts to analyze the relations between the Ainu and the Japanese by tracing the changing names given to the Ainu by the Japanese. The framework utilized here is the dynamic interaction between the naming side and the named. The Japanese named the Ainu Kyu-dojin, meaning former native, at the beginning of the Meiji Era. The Ainu hated to be identified as Kyu-dojin because of the term's other meanings, savage and uncivilized. Furthermore, the negative connotations associated with Kyu-dojin affected the word Ainu as well. The words Utari, originally an Ainu word meaning comrade, and Ainu-kei, meaning Japanese of Ainu lineage, were later used in order to avoid direct identification of the Ainu people. A typical example was the change of the Ainu peoples association's name from Ainu Kyokai to Utari Kyokai. A reawakening in pride for the original meaning of the word Ainu, human, has led some in the community to call themselves Ainu again. The name of the majority Japanese, i.e., Nihonjin, Wajin, or Shamo, who are usually insensitive to their own and the minority's names, should be questioned as well, in order to be conscious of their identity building in relation with others.

本邦におけるプリオン研究者の情報交換の促進と将来の共同研究プロジェクト立ち上げのための準備を目的に本研究を遂行した。情報交換に関しては、平成14年10月21日に長崎において班会議を開催し、班員に加えて数名の内外のプリオン研究者による情報交換と討議の場をもった。その結果、個々の班員間の往来及び研究材料の共有などのいくつかの実が挙がっている。例えば、片峰と小野寺は各々が開発したプリオン蛋白遺伝子に関わる遺伝子改変マウスと培養細胞株を共有することにより、プリオン病神経変性の機構解明へ向けた共同研究の進展が図られた。準備研究に関しては、プリオン研究進展に極めて大きな意味をもつ種々のモデル動物、細胞株、抗体、解析システムの開発が行われ、将来の大型共同研究プロジェクトへの準備は整ったと考えられる。以下に特筆される成果を挙げる。(1)プリオン持続感染細胞株の樹立(片峰)(2)プリオン類似蛋白(Dpl)遺伝子トランスジェニックマウスの樹立(片峰)(3)プリオン蛋白(PrP)と相互作用をする分子の同定法の開発(堂浦)(4)異常プリオン蛋白(PrPSc)に特異的立体構造を認識する抗体の確立(堀内)(5)不死化によるPrP欠損神経細胞株の樹立(小野寺)(6)PrPの細胞内挙動の顕微鏡下での追跡法の確立(金子)(7)タンパク質の2次構造変換定理の発見(柳川)(8)微量核酸(RNA)同定法の開発(福岡)本年度は、他領域との重複などの問題点があり、新規特定領域への申請は見送ったが、本研究の成果を基礎に来年度以降の申請へむけ、さらなる体制整備を行う予定である。

Retinal proteins possess vitamin A aldehyde (retinal) as a chromophore within seven transmembrane α-helices. Visible light absorption of them triggers <i>trans-cis</i> photoisomerization of the retinal chromophore and induces structural changes in the protein moiety, resulting in a variety of biological functions such as vision, ion transportation, and photosensing. Environmental genomics revealed that retinal proteins are widely distributed through all three biological kingdoms, eukarya, bacteria, and archaea, indicating the biological significance of their light energy conversion. In addition to their biological aspect, retinal proteins have become a focus of interest in part because of applications for optogenetics. On the basis of our results and other findings, we highlight the recent progress in structural and functional studies on retinal proteins.<br>

上部消化管内視鏡検査において効果的な咽頭麻酔を行うことは検査する患者の安全 ・ 安楽につながり,確実な診断を行ううえでとても重要となる.日ごろの看護のなかで,苦痛の訴えを聞くことやなかなか挿入できないなどを目にして来た.内視鏡技師研究会などにおいても,効果的な咽頭麻酔について数々の検討がなされている.アイス麻酔剤の形状やフレーバーでの味つけ,咽頭麻酔時の好ましい体位 ・ 時間などを考慮 ・ 工夫した.上部消化管内視鏡検査を受けた211名を対象にアンケートにより効果の検証を行った.その結果,アイス麻酔剤を使用した効果的な咽頭麻酔の方法が確認できた.

本研究では文字のフォントの自動生成, 自動変換のタスクに取り組んでいる.従来のフォント生成のタスクでは文字をいくつかのストロークから成り立つものとしモデル化を行い作成する\\手法が取られてきた.それに対して, 本研究では深層学習により, 画像中のフォント画像ないしパターン画像からストロークに相当\\する特徴を自動で抽出し,変換元のフォントから任意のデザインパターンへの変換に挑戦している.この仕組みにより手書き文字のような個人ごとのオリジナルフォントの作成が用意にできるようになる.実験ではケチャップ文字を始めとしたユニークな質感パターン画像セットを作成し,深層学習のクロスドメイン学習による手法と Neural Style Transfer の手法とを組み合わせ, 生成結果の可読\性を改善した.

At Syowa Station, Antarctica, the cosmic-ray neutron observation was made, at the initial stage, with the IGY-type neutron monitor during the period from March 1960 to December 1961. On the opportunity of IQSY, a new type of cosmic-ray meter, IQSY-type neutron monitor, was developed by CARMICHAEL. In February 1967, the IQSY-type neutron monitor consisting of three counters (3-NM-64) was installed at Syowa Station in the 8th Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition. In February 1968 seven counters were added and two more in February 1969, finally twelve counters. The recording system for observation comprises the so-called multiplicity meter, by which the counting rates are divided into six channels, multiplicity=1 to more than 6, according to the neutron multiplicity detected within the gating time of 1 m sec. The counting rates are automatically printed and punched on a tape every ten minutes. This readout equipment became duplex since February 1968. The cosmic-ray observation room was specially designed so as to avoid influence of snowdrift around the building in which the neutron monitor is installed, and also to keep the room temperature constant throughout the year. In practice, no snow effect on the neutron intensity was recognized and the room temperature was 20°±1℃ in 1967. This report describes details of the cosmic-ray neutron observation in 1967-1968 and some results deduced from data analyses The atmospheric effect, the diurnal variation and the Forbush decrease were investigated in connection with the neutron multiplicity, particularly with regard to the remarkable Forbush event in May 1967.
