この白書では,現在の購読型科学雑誌の集合体をオープンアクセスのビジネスモデルへ大規模に転換することについて,事実に基づいて強力に論証する。現存する雑誌は十分にテストされた機能をもっているので,維持され,かつ21世紀の研究のための需要に応えなければならないが,同時にその裏にある支出の流れは大幅に再構築される。オープンアクセスへ向けたこの決定的な前進は,十分な勢いをもっている。今ある多様なイニシアティブは,この明確な目標にまとまってゆくために協調するものでなくてはならない。研究の国際的な性質は,世界の一流の研究機関のコンセンサスを通じたものでなくては,この転換が真に世界的な規模で達成されることはないだろうということを暗示している。全ての状況を勘案すれば,すでに学術出版システムに投下されている資金は,未来へ向けて持続可能な転換を可能とするために十分なものである。現在雑誌購読システムの中に封じ込められている資金は回収されオープンアクセス出版サービスに再投資されるべきであるという理解が共有されなければならない。現在の図書館資料購入予算は,財政面やそれ以外のリスク無しでの転換を可能とするための究極の宝物庫である。目標は,今もなお研究者から要求されている,出版社が提供する確立したサービス水準を維持する一方で,必要な支払の流れを再定義し再編成することである。根本的なビジネスモデルを破壊することによって,雑誌出版が生き延びていくための力は維持され,未来の学術界の発展へ確かな足跡を残すことができる。

As to the fossil elephants, the ancient Japanese naturalists for a long time believed, following the explanation in the Chinese Pents'ao, that they were the skeletons of dragon but later in the Yedo period some scholars grew suspicious about its veracity. The questions of dragons had been variously discussed since 1760 till the so-called “skeletons of dragons” found in Japan were proved to be the ossil remains of elephants in 1811.

本稿の目的は、帝政成立前後のローマ人著作家が「インペリウム」をどのように認識していたかを明らかにし、公職者の権限や職務の性質に関する現代の研究者の理解を批判することである。インペリウムは、都市ローマの外側「ミリティアエ」では軍隊指揮権であり、都市ローマの内側「ドミ」では高位公職者の職務権限だったと考えられてきた。しかし近年、公職者の職務権限は職務内容によって「ドミ」と「ミリティアエ」によって区別された、また、インペリウムは軍隊指揮権であって高位公職者の職務権限ではなかった、とする研究が出されている。こうした先行研究に対して、筆者は、共和政末期以降のローマ人著作家は「インペリウム」を高位公職者の職務権限を含む権限として認識していたことを確認した上で、ケントゥリア民会に注目し、「ドミ」と「ミリティアエ」の間に領域的にも機能的にも明確な境界を引くことはできないと主張した。The aim of this paper is to clarify how the Romans viewed imperium and to criticize modern scholars' understanding thereof. It has long been believed that imperium encompassed not only command outside the city of Rome (militiae) but also the authority of the higher magistrates (consuls and praetors) inside the city (domi). However, recent studies show that the authority of the high magistrates were divided into domi and militiae by the qualities of the tasks (civil or military, respectively) they took, not by the place in which they were located (in- or outside Rome), and, moreover, that imperium was simply military command and not a civil authority of high magistracies. In this paper, focusing on the Romans' descriptions of imperium and comitia centuriata, I assert that the Romans regarded imperium as the strong power of the higher magistrates, including military and civil authority, and that they had no clear distinction between domi and militiae which, as modern scholars have considered, divided the tasks of the magistrates in both the territorial and functional sense.

Ab initio molecular orbital calculation is becoming a powerful tool for studying inter-molecular interactions in crystals. The effects of basis set and electron correlation and the performance of density functional methods are reviewed. Model chemistry calculations and classification of intermolecular interactions are briefly mentioned. Some examples of high-level ab initio computations of intermolecular interactions are also presented.

形態素解析に代わる新しい日本語文解析の第1ステップとして、「境界設定」という枠組を提案する。境界設定では、語(単位)を認定するのではなく、境界とその種別を認定する。本稿では、その考え方と表現法について述べる。This paper proposes boundary identification, a new framework of the first step of Japanese sentence analysis. Boundary identification identifies boundaries and their types between linguistic units in a given sentence. This paper describes the concept and an implementation of the framework.

本州南方沖よりダイオウイカ属の一種Architeuthis sp.の幼体が採集された。この個体は外套背長18 mmで, 全背面を赤色の大型色素胞に, 外部ほぼ全面を銀白色の組織によって覆われていた。外套膜は細長く, 後端に亜三角形の短い鰭を有し, 頭部は大きく, 太短い腕と弱い触腕を備える。既存の報告としてはタスマン海近海で採集された外套背長10 mmの稚仔と東部太平洋および大西洋から採集された50 mm前後の幼体2個体の報告があるが, タスマン海の標本についてはその同定が疑問視される。東部太平洋および大西洋から採集された個体に比べ, 今回の個体は腕が短い点が特徴的であるが, これが種による差なのか, 成長に伴う変化に大きく依存しているのか, 現段階では不明である。

This paper examines the relationship between ethics and the Japanese martial arts (budo). The issue of this relationship has been studied mainly from the standpoint of history, and has not been much researched from the standpoint of practitioners. Therefore, in this paper, I describe how practitioners acquire the ethics of budo by approach the topic through the concept of “becoming,” as maintained by Sakuta, Yano and Kameyama, with the intention of clarifying the inner processes adopted by practitioners. For this purpose, I observed participants at an aikido dojo. Generally, participant observation means describing the experiences of field work objectively. In this paper, however, I describe the aikido practitioners' inner experiences, and from that I try to clarify the practical aspect of the relationship between ethics and budo. The findings of my study were as follows. In the practice of aikido, the practitioners are instructed to harmonize with each other and are taught that this feeling of harmonization is the “Aikido spirit”. Not only by developing this feeling, but also an awareness that the mind and body don't match each other, and control of mind and body cannot be achieved together, aikido practitioners gain a new view of the world, and reflect on everyday life and communication with others through the feeling gained in the dojo. Aikido practitioners acquire ethics through constant reflection on mind and body. Such reflection is indispensable in order for practitioners to embody morality. I think it is possible to consider fundamentally the roles of modern Japanese martial arts by clarifying these processes.
