The Japanese cockroach species of the genus Panesthia are revised. Since Matsumura's brief record (1898)"Panesthia angustipennis Illiger" has been listed in Japanese literature without any precise taxonomic treatment. On the other hand, "Cryptogercus (sic) spadicus Shiraki (1906), " which is nothing but an immature larva of the same species, also remained without further consideration until Roth's revision (1979) of this genus. In the present revision the Japanese and Taiwanese representatives of the "Panesthia angustipennis-Group" are investigated. The Panesthia species of the Yayeyama Islands which is characterized with reddish marked larval insects is now separated as P. angustipennis yayeyamensis ssp. nov., the similar larval insects are being also found in Taiwan.

盲導犬では子犬期の約1 年間、子犬飼育ボランティア(以下、PW )の家庭で育てられる。PW に対してより適切な指導を行うことを目的に、経験あるPW と新規PW の間で子犬の飼育初期におこる問題の相違について調査を行った。対象はPW 経験がある76 家族と新規PW 102 家族、計178家族とし、3 ヶ月齢時に「排泄の失敗」、「飛びつき」、「吠え」、「拾い食い」、「散歩時の引っ張り」の有無について二者択一、その他の問題については自由記述でアンケートを行った。PW経験者が抱える平均問題数は3 . 0 件(中央値3、最頻値0)、PW 未経験者では4 . 2 件(中央値4、最頻値5)であった( p< 0 . 01 )。また「排泄の失敗」、「飛びつき」、「破壊行動」、「甘噛み」では明らかに未経験者での出現率が高い( p< 0 . 01 )ことがわかった。出現率に差が認められた項目では以前のPW 経験が役立ったことが示唆された。つまり、これらの項目では以前のしつけの方法が他の犬にも応用できたと考えられた。「吠え」や「拾い食い」などでは出現率の差はほとんど無く、これらの問題ではその個体に合った具体的な指導が必要であると考えられた。

Skeletal muscle injury is generally caused by stimuli, such as intense resistance training, eccentric muscle contraction, muscle strain and bruising. Injured skeletal muscles are repaired within several weeks after injury, because skeletal muscle has a remarkable capacity for muscle regeneration. Cellular and molecular events underlying the regenerative processes are mainly regulated by myogenic stem cells and inflammatory cells. The aim of this review is to summarize the current understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms responsible for muscle regeneration. In this review, focus will be given to the critical roles of satellite cells and macrophages during muscle regeneration. In addition, the satellite cell responses to exercise are also discussed.

Skeletal muscle is the most abundant tissue in the mammalian body and is composed of multinucleated fibers that contract to generate force and movement. In addition, skeletal muscle has the ability to regenerate following severe damage by exercise, toxins or disease. Regeneration is possible because of the presence of mononucleated precursor cells called satellite cells. After injury, satellite cells are activated, proliferate, and fuse with the damaged fibers or fuse together to form new myofibers. A fraction of satellite cells self-renew and behave as muscle stem cells. Although satellite cells are the main players in muscle regeneration, a number of other cell types are also recruited to form new fibers or to modulate the behavior of satellite cells. Here we present an overview of current knowledge of regeneration focusing on muscle satellite cells and other stem cells and discussing promising stem cell therapy for diseases such as muscular dystrophy.

Adult mammalian skeletal muscles possess a stem cell population, called muscle satellite cells. Satellite cells mainly contribute to restoring damaged or diseased muscles. The migration of satellite cells plays an important role in muscle regeneration, and it has been traditionally thought that satellite cell migration is regulated by lamellipodial/filopodial formation. In addition, it has recently been thought that blebbing/amoeboid formation plays an important role in satellite cell migration. On the other hand, the method/mechanism(s) of the migration of satellite cells located within skeletal muscles in vivo has barely been elucidated. However, because, in recent years, in vivo real-time imaging of satellite cell migration in skeletal muscles has been reported, it is expected to markedly expand our understanding of satellite cell migration in vivo. This review will focus on the regulatory mechanism of satellite cell migration in vitro and new insights into in vivo satellite cell mobility using real-time imaging.

Satellite cells are skeletal muscle tissue stem cells located between the basal lamina and sarcolemma of myofibres and play crucial roles in adult muscle repair and regeneration as well as postnatal muscle growth. More and more findings indicate that satellite cells exist as a genetically and functionally heterogeneous population among muscles, which is not only based on fibre types, but also embryonic origin. Satellite cells are also a heterogeneous population even within a single myofibre. Only a small population of satellite cells possesses “stemness” and exhibits remarkable regeneration with a high self-renewal ability when transplanted into injured muscles. Recent studies have shed light on the cellular and molecular characteristics of satellite cell heterogeneity including Pax7+Myf5- cells, satellite-side population cells, Pax7-nGFPhigh cells, and slow-dividing cells. Here, we review recent progress in our understanding of the heterogeneity and stem cell hierarchies in the satellite cell population.

A questionnaire survey and analysis was conducted for 133 women's college students to clarify the current Japanese young generation's acceptability towards foreign people. The Social Distance Scale was made and used In the survey. As a result, young Japanese are willing to accept foreigners according to their social situation (e.g. teacher-student relationship) or their interest in a progressive society, and according not to nationality, race and physical appearance. However, those who tend to show their conservativeness still remain pro-Western.

The Babesia gibsoni heat shock protein 90 (BgHSP90) gene was cloned and sequenced. The length of the gene was 2,610 bp with two introns. This gene was amplified from cDNA corresponding to full length cording sequence (CDS) with an open reading frame of 2,148 bp. A phylogenetic analysis of the CDS of HSP90 gene showed that B. gibsoni was most closely related to B. bovis and Babesia sp. BQ1/Lintan and lies within a phylogenetic cluster of protozoa. Moreover, mRNA transcription profile for BgHSP90 exposed to high temperature were examined by quantitative real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. BgHSP90 levels was elevated when the parasites were incubated at 43°C for 1 hr.

[Purpose] The aim of this technical note was to report significant differences in the tension forces of the different-sized Thera-band® elastic bands (Hygenic Corp.) determined by us versus the manufacturer. [Subjects] Two trained observers performed all measurements. [Methods] The tension force (kilogram-force units) of eight color-coded elastic bands (tan, yellow, red, green, blue, black, silver, and gold) with different resistance levels was measured at 10 different percentages of elongation (25% to 250% with 25% increments) using an electronic elongation gauge tensiometer. [Results] There were significant differences in the tension force of the elastic bands of different colors when compared in pairs (excepting the tan/yellow pair) at 100% and 200% elongation, as determined via one-way analysis of variance. There were no differences in the slopes for the tan versus yellow and green versus blue bands, as determined via linear regression analysis and one-way analysis of variance. Comparison of the tension force values obtained in our study with the reference values of the manufacturer (the t-test applied to the slopes) showed significant differences for five colors (yellow, green, blue, silver, and gold). [Conclusion] Our results indicate that the tension force values for Thera-Band elastic bands provided by the manufacturer are overestimates.
