A xenogeneic DNA vaccination has been licensed for use in dogs with locally controlled stage II and III oral malignant melanoma (OMM). At present, there is limited outcome data for dogs with OMM treated with surgery and immunotherapy. The aim of this study is to retrospectively review the outcome and survival of 32 dogs affected by OMM that were treated with a combination of surgery and the xenogeneic DNA vaccination (with the addition of radiotherapy in some cases), and to determine the influence of surgical margins and delay in receiving vaccination. The overall median survival time (MST) was 335 days (95% CI: 301–540 days) and the overall progression-free survival (PFS) was 160 days (mean 182 days, 95% CI: 132–232 days). Stage, completeness of surgical margins and delay in administration of the vaccine did not appear to statistically influence survival or PFS, although our results may reflect the low statistical power of the study due to small numbers. Further studies are required to assess whether the addition of any adjuvant treatment to surgery, including immunotherapy, is able to significantly prolong survival in cases of canine oral melanoma.

Proliferated IgG4+ plasma cells are polyclonal, suggesting that the pathogenesis of IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) involves upstream events related to the regulation of IgG4 expansion. We hypothesized that lymphoid follicle formation may play an important role in the pathogenesis of IgG4-RD. Using various antibodies, especially against monocyte, macrophage, and follicular dendritic cell markers, we immunohistochemically assessed the distribution of immune cells in lymphoid follicles. Pathological findings of tissue samples from patients with IgG4-RD (n = 22), reactive hyperplasia (n = 3), multicentric Castleman’s disease (n = 3), and Sjögren’s syndrome (n = 13) were analyzed. CD14-positive lymphoid follicles were observed only in patients with IgG4-RD, and CD14-positive cells were identified as follicular dendritic cells by multicolor immunohistochemistry. There were few differences in the distributions of other cell types between the IgG4-RD and control groups. The presence of CD14+ follicular dendritic cells in lymphoid follicles may play a pathophysiological role in IgG4-RD.

第二次世界大戦中から戦後にかけて,多くの被追放民がドイツ連邦共和国に流入した。これらの被追放民の総数は約780万人にものぼり,1961年のドイツ連邦共和国の住民全体の約16%にも相当した。バイエルン州は1950年の時点でドイツ連邦共和国の州の中で最も多くの被追放民を受け入れていた。本論文はバイエルン州の難民政策と難民の統合について述べた。バイエルン州はドイツ連邦政府と協力して,様々な難民政策を行った。この結果バイエルン州は,約160万人もの被追放民をバイエルン社会に定住させることができた。また1950年には約4万社にものぼる被追放民の企業が設立された。被追放民と地元住民は1950年ではまだ経済的な格差があったが,1960年には経済的な格差はほとんど見られなくなっていた。このためバイエルン州の難民政策は成功したと評価できる。

神経疾患による睡眠障害は,脳内病変により睡眠と覚醒をコントロールする神経機構の障害,呼吸筋筋力低下や不随意運動といった神経症状,治療薬に起因するもの,疾患に対する不安などの心理的要因が組み合わさって生じる.レム睡眠行動障害はパーキンソン病,レビー小体病,多系統萎縮症の前駆症状のことがある.筋ジストロフィー症ではレム睡眠時の低呼吸が呼吸不全の初発症状となる.筋萎縮性側索硬化症では肺胞低換気が主症状で,進行に伴って睡眠呼吸障害が生じる.各種神経疾患の睡眠障害の発生機序を理解することで,初めて適切な治療が可能となる.

Feline morbillivirus (FmoPV) is a new virus species and its detection is important, since correlation has been reported between FmoPV virus infection and tubulointerstitial nephritis in cats. Here, we report a real-time reverse transcription (RT)-PCR system that can detect the FmoPV L-gene sequence with more than 10-time higher sensitivity than a conventional PCR system, resulting in detection of less than 10 copies of the template DNA. The total FmoPV positive rate of urine samples from veterinary clinics and hospitals in Japan was 15.1% (25/166) using this system. This study demonstrates usefulness of the real-time RT-PCR system for detection of FmoPV for cat urine samples.

This paper aims to build up a theory of communication around sounds and their contexts. To this end, the author will indicate the significance of indexical (non-semantic; or non-referential) aspects of sounds which mediate human communications. The first section focuses on the way in which human voices mediate communications which have no semantic basis. In order to explain why these communications can be understood by each other, some linguistic anthropologists focus on the non-semantic aspects of the voices. The theoretical basis, Silverstein's perspective, will be introduced in the second section. He shows the importance not only of referential signs with semantic meanings but also of non-referential signs, or indexical signs, which include such as intonation and voice quality with (meta) pragmatic meanings. The third section critically discusses Brigg's analysis on healing ritual, which based heavily on Silverstein's theoretical perspective. The last section indicates some implications of the discussion on current ethnomusicological studies. In this discipline, especially since 2000s, researchers tend to emphasize the cultural factors surrounding sounds, rather than to depend upon their unique musicological studies about sounds themselves. In contrast, the author claims that it is significant to refer to Silverstein's theory of communication in order to explore the way how sounds and contexts which they indicate interact each other.
