Fertilization, the crucial step in sexual reproduction, requires the fusion of haploid sperm and egg to create a genetically distinct offspring. Despite many studies on mammalian fertilization, the molecular mechanisms underlining the membrane fusion remain largely unknown. At present, IZUMO1 on the sperm surface and JUNO on the egg surface are known as the only protein pair essential for fertilization. In this review, we focus on the crystal structures of human IZUMO1, JUNO and IZUMO1-JUNO complex. These structures reveal the molecular mechanism of mammalian gamete recognition, and provide information for development of non-hormonal contraceptive agents.

Elderly dementia would be considered as one of serious social issues in near future inJapan. A nonlinear regression method by support vector machine (SVM) was appliedto search factors related to patient rates of 47 prefectures among 34 kinds of lifestylehabit factors. Fourteen kinds of related factors were obtained; depression, alcohol,hyperlipidemia, hobby, fruits, stress disease, high blood pressure, soy product, cereal,fresh fish, cooking oil, exercise, fresh vegetable, and diabetes. Depression is the mostimportant factors to patient rates, and the relative significance of the related factors tothe patient rates of elderly dementia is discussed on the basis of their sensitivities. Theinformation obtained could be used for serving as a reference to factors which shouldbe verified in cohort or case-control studies for clarifying the causes of elderly dementiain Japan.

Objective: There have been reports of health hazards caused by medical devices, cosmetics, quasi-drugs, daily necessities, hygiene products, etc. (health-related products) sold in pharmacies and drugstores. However, the role pharmacists play in dealing with the health hazards caused by health-related products has not been clarified. Therefore, we conducted a survey on the cases of health hazards related to health-related products and the views of pharmacists.Methods: A questionnaire was administered anonymously by email to 601 pharmacists working in community pharmacies or drugstores between December 11 and 20, 2019.Results: The number of valid responses was 585. The breakdown of health hazard cases where pharmacists counseled customers were 60 for medical devices, 31 for cosmetics, 18 for quasi-drugs, 9 for hygiene products, and 20 for daily necessities and others. Of those 138 cases, 19 cases of medical devices were estimated to have an intermediate risk as a health hazard, and the other 119 cases were all classified as low. Of the cases that the pharmacists were not approached for help, but were aware of, 57 were medical devices (21 high, 31 intermediate, 5 low), 44 were cosmetics (12 intermediate, 32 low), 12 were quasi-drugs (7 intermediate, 5 low), 7 were hygiene products (7 low), and 64 were daily necessities and others (26 high, 34 intermediate, 4 low). With regard to health-related products, 95% of the respondents indicated that they had responded to customer questions with advice.Conclusion: Our results show that there are various cases that could develop into health hazards due to health-related products, and most respondents felt a need to alert the public. As such, pharmacists and other staffs in drugstores will continue to provide health support functions to their customers by advising them on not only pharmaceuticals but also these health-related products.

In Pompeii, a two-way traffic was impossible except for limited arteries, such as Strada Stabia and Viae della Fortuna, di Nola, and dell'Abbondanza. It has been suggested that cart-drivers adhered to the principle of driving on the right-hand side of streets. However, at the Nola, Sarno and Nocera gates, through which an one-way vehicle traffic was possible, vehicles had lay-bys on the left-hand sides. And the ruts remaining on the streets, which can provide the direction of carts, reveal that the carts were driven on the centre of the streets in both directions on via del Tempio di Iside.

Deism, a philosophical, theological, and, religious idea of deity in modern age, is much included and connected in the traditional old ones. In this paper, I treat of deism itself and other ideas of gods surrounding it. The content of this report is divided into three parts; firstly, the essence of deism and the connection with theism, secondly, in relation to atheism, naturalism, and free-thinking, thirdly, from some aspects of pantheism. Through these reasonings, I intend to clarify a fine resemblance and difference, and to make a comparison and contrast with deism and the others. As a result of these investigations, I seek to connect many-sided objects of deism-study with important points of other deities. I hope, afterwards, to improve a further study for real meanings of the broad deism.

In Pompeii, two underground conduits have not functioned systematically as the main drainage to discharge the fountain runoff and rainwater. The forum had been isolated from the network of street drainage system, and a raised surface on the street north of the forum prevented the runoff from flowing into the forum. The four sewer holes caught the excess water running on 5 surface drain lines of which each collected the water from three or four street fountains and water towers. To control the water running on the street would have taken a water distribution system like the one already existing.

三浦文法は、時枝誠記により提唱され三浦つとむにより発展的に継承された言語過程説に基づく日本語文法である。言語過程説によれば、言語は対象-認識-表現の過程的構造をもち、対象のあり方が話者の認識を通して表現されている。本論文では、三浦文法に基づいて体系化した日本語品詞体系および形態素処理用の文法記述形式を提案し、日本語の形態素処理や構文解析におけるその有効性を論じた。日本語の単語を、対象の種類とその捉え方に着目し、約400通りの階層化された品詞に分類して、きめ細かい品詞体系を作成した。本論文で提案した品詞体系と形態素処理用文法記述形式に基づき、実際に形態素処理用の日本語文法を構築した結果によれば、本文法記述形式により例外的な規則も含めて文法を簡潔に記述できるだけでなく、拡張性の点でも優れていることが分かった。本品詞体系により、三浦の入れ子構造に基づく意味と整合性の良い日本語構文解析が実現できるものと期待される。
