Antibiotics continue to be used as growth promoters in the poultry industry. Honeybee (Apis melifera) venom (HBV) possesses a number of beneficial biological activities, particularly for regulating the immune system. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the immunoprophylactic effects of HBV against Salmonella Gallinarum in broiler chicks as an initial step towards developing eco-friendly alternatives to reduce antibiotic use. HBV was administered using a spray technique. HBV improved body weight gain, particularly in the presence of infection. Moreover, HBV enhanced antibody production activity against formalin-killed S. Gallinarum. The CD4+:CD8+ T lymphocyte ratio, relative mRNA expression levels of interleukin-18 and interferon-γ, and serum lysozyme activity also increased following HBV administration before the infection period as well as during infection. HBV reinforced bacterial clearance and increased survivability against S. Gallinarum. Corresponding pathological analyses demonstrated that the HBV-sprayed group displayed mild and less severe abnormal changes compared with those in the control group. It was presumed that the prophylactic effects of HBV against S. Gallinarum were associated with its non-specific immune response stimulating activity. Thus, HBV may provide an alternative to reduce antibiotic use in the poultry industry.

This paper compared the specificity of recollections of autobiographical memories where musical cues for events were varied. We used music which was popular in the past as cues which were related to a larger number of past individual events (frequent events cues) and music which was typically only sung at graduation ceremonies as cues which were related to a smaller number of events (rare events cues). In the instructed retrieval condition, participants were told to listen to the music and to recall past events, whereas in incidental retrieval condition, the instruction was only to listen to the music. Then participants were asked to describe what they recalled while hearing the music. When frequent events musical cues were played, the specificities of the recalled events were higher in the instructed retrieval condition than in the incidental retrieval condition. In contrast, when rare events musical cues were played, there were no differences in the specificities of the recalled events.

Twenty-one naturally occurring flavonoids were tested for inhibitory activities against alpha-glucosidase (EC 3.2.1.20) and alpha-amylase (EC 3.2.1.1). Luteolin, amentoflavone, luteolin 7-O-glucoside, and daidzein were the strongest inhibitors among the compounds tested. Luteolin inhibited alpha-glucosidase by 36% at the concentration of 0.5 mg/ml and was stronger than acarbose, the most widely prescribed drug, in inhibitory potency, suggesting that it has the possibility to effectively suppress postprandial hyperglycemia in patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. Luteolin also inhibited alpha-amylase effectively although it was less potent than acarbose. The clinical value of luteolin needs to be further evaluated.

Baicalin from Scutellaria baicalensis is a major flavonoid constituent found in the traditional Chinese medicinal herb Baikal skull cap. It has been widely used for the treatment of various diseases such as pneumonia, diarrhea, and hepatitis. Recent studies have demonstrated that baicalin possesses a wide range of pharmacological and biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-oxidant, and anti-tumor properties. Specifically, its anti-inflammatory activity has been estimated in various animal models of acute and chronic inflammation; however, its effects on dendritic cells (DCs) maturation and immuno-stimulatory activities are still unknown. In this study, we attempted to determine whether baicalin could influence DC surface molecule expression, antigen uptake capacity, cytokine production, and capacity to induce T-cell differentiation. Baicalin was shown to significantly suppress the expression of surface molecules CD80, CD86, major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I, and MHC class II as well as the levels of interleukin-12 production in lipopolysaccharide stimulated DCs. Moreover, baicalin-treated DCs showed an impaired induction of the T helper type 1 immune response and a normal cell-mediated immune response. These findings provide important understanding of the immunopharmacological functions of baicalin and have ramifications for the development of therapeutic adjuvants for the treatment of DCs-related acute and chronic diseases.

目的:発作性心房細動に対する電気的除細動直後の脳梗塞発症について,その背景因子と臨床像を検討した. 対象と方法:1995年4月から2003年11月の期間に,当院で発作性心房細動に対し電気的除細動を実施した連続768例.除細動後の脳梗塞発症群,非発症群とで比較を行った. 結果:9例(1.2%)で除細動後10日以内に脳梗塞が発症した.同期間中に脳梗塞を来さなかった759例から無作為に抽出した45例と比較した結果,除細動までの心房細動持続時間(OR 1.26,95%CI 1.03∼1.53)が,有意かつ独立した脳梗塞発症因子であった. 結論:脳梗塞合併予防のために,発作性心房細動に対する発症後早期の電気的除細動の必要性が示唆された.

Background: The implantable loop recorder (ILR) is a useful tool for diagnosing paroxysmal conditions potentially related to arrhythmias. Most investigations have focused on selected clinical studies or high-volume centers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the indications and outcomes of the ILR in real clinical practice. Methods and Results: This was a prospective, multicenter registry of patients undergoing ILR implantation for clinical indications (April 2006–December 2008). Clinical characteristics (symptoms, arrhythmias, treatments) were recorded in a database. Follow-up data at 1 year or after the occurrence of the first episode were also recorded. Total enrollment: 743 patients (male, 413, 55.6%; 64.9±16 years); 228 (30.7%) had structural heart disease (SHD), and 183 (24.6%), bundle branch block (BBB). Recurrent syncope (76.4%) was the most common indication for implantation. Complete follow-up was obtained for 680 patients (91.5%). Three hundred and twenty-five patients (48%) presented 414 events, with a final diagnosis in 230 patients (70.8% of patients with events; 33.1% of patients with follow-up). Syncope secondary to bradyarrhythmia was the most frequent diagnosis. Similar rates of final diagnoses were noted in subgroups of SHD, BBB and normal heart. Regarding the cause of implantation, higher event rates were registered among patients with recurrent syncope. Conclusions: One-third of patients obtained a final diagnosis with the ILR, independent of the baseline characteristics. Only the cause of implantation provided different rates of final diagnosis.

Colla corii asini (E’jiao), donkey-hide gelatin prepared by stewing and concentrating from Equus asinus L. donkey hide, is a traditional Chinese medicine preparation widely used in clinical hematic antanemic therapy in China. The aim of the present study was to investigate potential anti-aging effect of Colla corii asini and explore related mechanisms in D-galactose (gal) induced aging model mice. The mice were artificially induced aging by subcutaneously injection with D-gal at the dose of 100 mg/kg·d for 8 weeks. Colla corii asini was simultaneously treated to them once daily by intragastric gavage. Appetite, mental condition, body weight, and organ index were observed. Activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), as well as levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) in serum, brain, and liver were determined by according assay kits. Western blotting analysis was used to detect p16 and p21 expression. Results indicated that Colla corii asini could improve appetite, mental condition, body weight, and organ condition of model mice, improve SOD, CAT, and GSH-Px activities, reduce MDA levels, and modulate age-related genes expression in D-gal induced mice. Therefore, Colla corii asini may have effect to suppress the aging process through enhancing antioxidant activity, scavenging free radicals, and modulating aging-related gene expression.

Metformin is widely prescribed for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). Its use for patients with type 1 has been considered a contraindication because of possible adverse effects such as lactic acidosis. However, metformin has been recently used with insulin therapy to reduce insulin-dose requirements in Type 1 DM.An 81-year-old Japanese woman with type 1 DM was treated with insulin and metformin. She was admitted to our hospital due to altered mental state and hypotensive shock via a referral from her primary care physician. The patient had severe lactic acidosis and acute kidney injury with hyperkalemia with the suspected cause being the use of metformin. She was treated successfully with hemodialysis (HD).Although the independent predictive factor of mortality due to metformin-associated lactic acidosis is a prothrombin time (PT) activity of less than 50% in 24 hours, we recommend that HD should be performed for a patient with severe lactic acidosis even if the initial PT activity is normal.

ヘパリンおよびヘパラン硫酸 (HS) は、複雑な骨格を持つ多糖であり、多くのタンパク質の活性を媒介・調節している。それらのタンパク質は、多様な硫酸化パターンで修飾された繰返し2糖骨格を持つ糖鎖と相互作用する。相互作用に関する分子レベルの詳細な知見は、新しい形態の診断薬や治療薬の開発に役立つと期待される。ヘパリンおよびHS骨格オリゴ糖の化学合成は、構造活性相関研究のための構造が明確な試料の入手を容易とするため、非常に重要である。しかしながら、化学合成においてもいくつかの課題に直面することが多い。いくつかの課題とは、例えば、希少なL-イドース/L-イズロン酸誘導体の入手、グルコサミンのグリコシル化反応におけるα-立体選択性、糖鎖の伸長法、位置選択的な硫酸基の導入を含む保護基の選択とその取り扱い、天然のヘパリンおよびHS鎖に相当する充分な多様性を持った化合物群の効率的な調製である。本総説は上記の課題に取り組んだ私達の成果に焦点をおきながら、これまで研究されてきた解決策を簡潔にまとめる。さらに、合成した糖鎖を用いた生物学的アッセイの結果についても簡単に述べる。

The effects of various antihypertensive agents in relation to cerebral circulation and cerebral vessels were widely reviewed throughout the literature. The changes of cerebral blood flow (CBF), cerebral metabolism and CBF autoregulaiton were also discussed under the acute or chronic administration of antihypertensive agents in human being and experimental animals as well.Antihypertensive agents include diuretics, methyldopa, clonidine, reserpine, alpha-blockers, beta-blockers, vasodilators, calcium antagonists and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, which habe been widely used for hypertensives with or without stroke.Acute effects : A bolus or continuous injection, or a single oral administration of vasodilators, calcium antagonists and reserpine increases CBF regardless of the blood pressure alteration. In contrast, both clonidine and beta-blockers decrease CBF by direct vasoconstriction or by decreasing cerebral metabolism. CBF remains unchanged or slightly increases by administration of alpha-blockers and angiotensin converting enxyme (ACE) inhibitors. No documents have been reported about the acute effect of diuretics and methyldopa. The lower limit of CBF autoregulation is shifted to lower levels by the administration of alpha-blockers, vasodilators and ACE inhibitors. Beta-blockers have no effects on autoregulatory range, while calcium antagonists affect little or or slightly raise the lower limit to a upper level.Chronic effects : Long-term administration of antihypertensive agents has different influence on CBF compared with acute administration. In hypertensive patients without stroke, most of agents do not change CBF, but some agents rather increase. In hypertensive patients with stroke CBF is increased by methyldopa and ACE inhibitors, but unchanged by alpha-blockers.Each antihypertensive agent has different inherent effects on cerebral circulaiton. Therefore we must know the pharmacological action of the drugs on brain itself or cerebral circulation, when we treat the hypertensive patients, especially in the cases who have a history of stroke.

わが国では65歳以上の認知症有病率が14%程度と推定されており, 高齢化に伴って今後も増え続けるといわれる. 近年の画像診断技術の発展は目覚ましく, アルツハイマー病をはじめとする変性性認知症の診断に大きく貢献している. 構造画像では, 以前は非変性性認知症の除外診断が主目的であったが, 最近では, アルツハイマー病での海馬や嗅内野の萎縮など, 積極的に認知症を鑑別するようになってきている. また機能画像においては脳血流SPECT, FDG-PETで各種疾患による特徴的な血流・代謝低下を捉えることにより認知症の鑑別に役立っている. その他アミロイドβタンパクの脳内沈着を画像化するアミロイドイメージングをはじめとし, 生体病理診断のための新技術も発展している. 今回は, 早期診断や治療薬の開発などにますます重要となってきている, 認知症の画像診断について概説する.

We herein report the first case of septic arthritis caused by rmpA-positive hypermucoviscous community-acquired K. pneumoniae that followed urosepsis in a 65-year-old Japanese woman. The patient responded well to drainage of the abscesses and treatment with cefazolin. Although this virulent phenotype of K. pneumoniae has been primarily reported in Hong Kong, we confirmed that 18/50 isolates obtained in our hospital over the past five years displayed the hypermucoviscous phenotype. Therefore, clinicians should consider the possibility of an increasing prevalence of rmpA-positive hypermucoviscous K. pneumoniae infection in Japan and be particularly vigilant for invasive clinical manifestations, even in patients with urinary tract infections.

The purpose of my paper is to clarify that the plan of the foundation of the University of Malaya seeks implicitly how to create the productive and rational labor force for the future nation state. This study will mainly focus on the Report of the Commission on University Education in Malaya submitted in the end of the British colonial period, and examine how the institutionalization of the colonial knowledge is planned in terms of technology. I will analyze the report from the following two points. The first is the transplantation of the Western technology and the training of local technocrats. Although the University of Malaya is given name of university, it is planned for a vocational school to train local technocrats rather than to create the Western type intellectuals. The stresses on the faculty of medicine including hygiene and tropical medicines might also be related to the purpose to create and train the rational labors. The second point is the technology to solve the ethnic problem of Malaya that is regarded as the obstacle for modernization and national integration. The Report recommends to create not the department of Malayan studies but the three different departments to conduct research on the language, culture and the society of the three major ethnic groups of Malaya. It seems that the Report gropes for multicultural national integration and modernization in today's sense.

A 13-year-old female Labrador Retriever presented with chronic regurgitation. Radiography and computed tomography (CT) revealed nodules in the caudal esophagus. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy followed by histopathological examination revealed esophageal granulomas caused by Spirocerca lupi. The infection was treated with milbemycin oxime. The therapy was successful, and a remarkable reduction in granulomas was observed. This case report describes the diagnostic imaging findings and treatment outcome of a dog with S. lupi infection in Japan.

Because of the growing market for sports drinks, prevention of yeast contamination of these beverages is of significant concern. This research was performed to achieve insight into the physiology of yeast growing in sports drinks through a genome-wide approach to prevent microbial spoilage of sports drinks. The genome-wide gene expression profile of Saccharomyces cerevisiae growing in the representative sports drink was investigated. Genes that were relevant to sulphate ion starvation response were upregulated in the yeast cells growing in the drink. These results suggest that yeast cells are suffering from deficiency of extracellular sulphate ions during growth in the sports drink. Indeed, the concentration of sulphate ions was far lower in the sports drink than in a medium that allows the optimal growth of yeast. To prove the starvation of sulphate ions of yeast, several ions were added to the beverage and its effects were investigated. The addition of sulphate ions, but not chloride ions or sodium ions, to the beverage stimulated yeast growth in the beverage in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, the addition of sulphate ions to the sports drink increased the biosynthesis of sulphur-containing amino acids in yeast cells and hydrogen sulphide in the beverage. These results indicate that sulphate ion concentration should be regulated to prevent microbial spoilage of sports drinks.
