A 5-year-old female miniature dachshund presenting with persistent vomiting and diarrhea had two concurrent rare pathological conditions: systemic candidiasis and mesenteric mast cell tumor with multiorgan metastases. Neoplastic mast cells formed mass in the mesentery of the cecal-colonic region and were also found in the liver, spleen, kidneys, lungs, adrenal grands, ovaries, bone marrow and other tissues. The cells had intracytoplasmic granules with metachromasia and were immunohistochemically positive for c-kit and histamine. Granulomatous lesions with fungal organisms were present in the heart, lungs, kidneys, pancreas, subserosal and surrounding adipose tissue of the duodenum, thyroid glands and mesenteric mass, and phagocytosed organisms were detected in the liver and bone marrow. Bacteriologically and immunohistochemically, the fungi were consistent with Candida albicans.

Human serum albumin (HSA) is an abundant and highly soluble plasma protein with the capacity to bind a remarkably diverse set of lipophilic anionic compounds so that it fulfils important roles in the transport of nutrients, hormones and toxins. The protein attracts great interest from the pharmaceutical industry since it can also bind a variety of drug molecules, impacting their delivery and efficacy. Our understanding of the binding and transport properties of albumin has been transformed by structural studies of the protein, in which crystallographic analysis has played a leading role. This review summarises the main insights to have accrued from this work, highlighting the significant advances that have been made but also pointing out some of the challenges ahead. Since further progress is likely to benefit from increased structural scrutiny of HSA, methodological developments instrumental to the success of crystallographic analysis of the protein are discussed in some detail.

Postoperative changes in endocrinological status and serum chemistry during the 4 years after transsphenoidal surgery (TSS) in 25 dogs with Cushing's disease were investigated in a prospective study. In all 25 dogs, Cushing's disease was diagnosed from resected pituitary tissues as a corticotroph adenoma in the anterior lobe of the pituitary. Prior to TSS, all 25 dogs showed hypercortisolemia. After TSS, the ACTH stimulation test showed continued low serum cortisol concentrations in 21 dogs (84%). In addition, the serum thyroid stimulating hormone concentrations decreased sequentially, while the serum T4 concentrations tended to increase due to the postoperative hormone substitution therapy utilized to avoid secondary hypothyroidism. In regard to serum chemistry, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and total cholesterol are commonly increased in canine Cushing's disease. In this study, ALP, ALT and total cholesterol were increased in 23 cases (92%), 19 cases (76%) and 20 cases (80%), respectively. However, postoperatively, these concentrations gradually decreased. The postoperative serum concentrations of ALP at 1 year, that of ALT at six months to 2 years and that of total cholesterol over the course of the 4 years decreased significantly compared with the concentrations before TSS. These results show that TSS is an effective treatment for canine Cushing's disease and for long-term improvement of hypercortisolemia. Moreover, TSS is effective in improvement of hypercortisolism, such as increased concentrations of serum ALP, ALT and total cholesterol.

Pituitary thyrotroph hyperplasia results from prolonged primary hypothyroidism in humans, mice and rats. In dogs with Cushing's disease, many cases have low serum thyroid hormones concentrations due to euthyroid sick syndrome. A 6-year-old castrated male Beagle diagnosed with Cushing's disease had a high serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) concentration that was treated by hypophysectomy. On histological examination, the resected pituitary gland contained both a corticotroph adenoma and thyrotroph hyperplasia. The TSH-positive cell ratio in this case was greater than that of healthy Beagles. In the present case, the pituitary thyrotroph hyperplasia was probably caused by primary hypothyroidism. In conclusion, this Beagle is the first histological confirmation of the coexistence of a corticotroph adenoma and thyrotroph hyperplasia.

L-type amino acid transporter 1 (LAT1), an isoform of amino acid transport system L, transports branched or aromatic amino acids essential for fundamental cellular activities such as cellular growth, proliferation and maintenance. This amino acid transporter recently has received attention because of its preferential and up-regulated expression in a variety of human tumors, in contrast to its limited distribution and low-level expression in normal tissues. In this study, to explore the feasibility of using LAT1 expression as a molecular marker in mammary gland tumors (MGT), we performed a comparative study of LAT1 expression at the mRNA and protein levels in normal mammary gland cells and tumor cells. Conventional RT-PCR and Western blotting were performed on MGT tissues from 16 dogs and normal organs from nine healthy dogs. LAT1 expression was detected in ten of the 16 MGT patients. As is the case in human tissues, LAT1 showed limited expressional distribution in normal canine organs. For quantitative expressional comparison, extensive real-time RT-PCR was performed on mRNA samples from 53 MGT patients. The comparison demonstrated that LAT1 mRNA levels from MGT tissues were 20 times higher than those in normal mammary gland tissues. Additionally, histologically invasive MGT showed a higher expression of LAT1 than non-invasive tumors. These findings suggest that LAT1 could be a clinical marker and therapeutic target for invasive malignant MGT.

糖尿病性舞踏病は,近年注目されている糖尿病性神経障害である.高齢者に突然発症する舞踏運動/バリズムで,頭部MRI上被殼を中心とする大脳基底核にT1強調画像で高信号を呈する.血糖コントロールとハロペリドールなどにより不随意運動は改善し,予後は良好である.発症機序は明らかではないが,大脳基底核の虚血・点状出血・代謝異常などが考えられている.これを契機に糖尿病がみつかる場合もあり,神経合併症として重要である.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of sports and energy drinks on the surface hardness of different restorative materials over a 6-month period. Forty-two disk-shaped specimens were prepared for each of the four restorative materials tested: Compoglass F, Filtek Z250, Filtek Supreme, and Premise. Specimens were immersed for 2 min daily, up to 6 months, in six storage solutions (n=7 per material for each solution): distilled water, Powerade, Gatorade, X-IR, Burn, and Red Bull. Surface hardness was measured at baseline, after 1 week, 1 month, and 6 months. Data were analyzed statistically using repeated measures ANOVA followed by the Bonferroni test for multiple comparisons (α=0.05). Surface hardness of the restorative materials was significantly affected by both immersion solution and immersion period (p<0.001). All tested solutions induced significant reduction in surface hardness of the restorative materials over a 6-month immersion period.

This study aimed at clarifying the differences between the biggest and smallest attendances in the J. League, as influenced by away club. The background is that case management using the popularity of the away club was reported, and precedence research was done to analyze the attendance according to away club.    We analyzed the J. League from 1993 to 2010 to clarify the influence of the away teams on away game match attendance. We searched for the differences between match attendance in away games and the season average match attendance of home clubs over 18 seasons.    The following results were obtained. In 18 seasons, 4 clubs had maximum differences and 8 clubs had minimum differences. The difference between maximum and minimum attendances was 10,000 to 15,000. Regarding the trend since 2001, we found that the differences tended to be larger.    From the obtained results, it was considered that club management in the J. League should consider the influence of the popularity of away clubs on attendance.

1944年東南海地震(Mw8.1)において,関東平野で強く生成した長周期地震動の特性を詳しく調査するために,東金,大手町,そして横浜地点に設置されていた今村式 2 倍強震計と中央気象台式 1 倍強震計の波形記録の解析を行った。煤書き記録を読み取り,地震計の計器特性を補正することにより,3 地点の強震波形を得た。確認のために,2004年紀伊半島南東沖の地震(Mw7.4)で観測された 3 地点の強震記録から経験的グリーン関数法を用いて合成した東南海地震のフーリエスペクトルとの比較を行い,周期 2 秒以上の長周期地震動の振幅レベルがよく一致することを確認した。  復元された東南海地震の強震波形から,関東平野では周期 7~12秒の長周期地震動が,最大 10 cm の大きさで10分間以上にわたって長く続いたことが明らかになった。速度応答スペクトル(減衰 5%)を求めると,東金と横浜では固有周期12秒においてそれぞれ最大 60 cm/s と 30 cm/s の応答が,そして大手町では固有周期 9 秒において 25 cm/s の強い応答が得られた。この応答レベルは2004年紀伊半島南東沖(Mw7.4)の 2-2.5倍の大きさになることがわかった。

We examine the decreasing of seismic activity which occurred in Shikoku, and the Wakayama and Tanba districts prior the 1946 Nankai earthquake, southwest Japan. Considering the effect of the Second World War, the seismic observation for that period by the Japan Meteorological Agency was not in sufficient conditions. Thus, the idea of seismicity lowering on the area has not been generally accepted, notwithstanding some studies on the subject were previously presented. This study proves however the lowering was not caused by the insufficient seismic observation. We give an explanation for the cause of lowering of seismicity. We also showed that the crustal seismic activity in Shikoku in terms of earthquake occurrence gradually decreased with time after the 1946 earthquake. The decrease in seismicity could be anticipated to continue till the next Nankai earthquake in the above mentioned districts. Accordingly, the lowering of seismic activity is expected as a precursor of the great Nankai earthquake, in particular in the Wakayama district where the usual seismic activity is comparatively high compared to other districts.

本論文では,まず文理解課題と動作の系列予測課題に関するfMRI実験を紹介した。続いて,これらの実験結果と多くのイメージング研究で得られている知見を基礎にして,構文処理における前頭—頭頂ループの役割について考察を行った。その結果,中心前回と下頭頂葉のループにより,手や構音のイメージ生成・操作が実現されることが示唆された。文を処理するときには,ブローカ野と縁上回の間の情報交換により構音情報が生成され,これに基づき,ブローカ野および中前頭回に蓄えられた構文的知識と,45野と側頭葉との相互作用により生成された意味情報が統合される。さらに,前頭葉背外側部,補足運動野と頭頂間溝,下頭頂葉の相互作用により,イメージの生成・操作がなされるものと考えられた。さらにわれわれが提案した「運動系列予測学習仮説」によって,このモデルがより広い枠組みでとらえられることを示した。

The purpose of this study is to clarify the effectiveness and significance of the health education method through using traditional folk song “Lam” in Lao PDR.The study was conducted at a village in Vientiane city with 48 participants. Firstly we collected quantitative data by questionnaire survey and then conducted group interview after listening “Lam” for HIV/AIDS prevention. The qualitative data was analyzed by basic procedure of KJ method.The result showed that the participants with older than 20-year old (p<0.05) and lower education (p<0.05) tended to prefer “Lam”. Through the qualitative analysis, eight categories were extracted ; 1) Interest for Lam talking about HIV/AIDS, 2) Perception for a risky sexual behavior, 3) Knowledge on the HIV/AIDS infection routes, 4) Commitment for HIV/AIDS prevention, 5) Needs for the health education methods, 6) Suggestion for HIV/AIDS education, 7) Consortium with people living with HIV/AIDS, and 8) Characteristics of Lam and its advantages. After listening Lam, the participants received knowledge about HIV/AIDS and formed attitude for HIV/AIDS prevention. This process was influenced by the characteristics of Lam and its advantage such as entertainment, educational function and traditional communication.These result suggested that Lam which has entertainment and educational function can be utilized as an effective media for Lao people to improve knowledge and promote better attitude and behavior. In addition, the educational method through using traditional communication media such as Lam might be effective for the people to memorize and communicate information.
