We developed a membrane reactor integrating dimethoxydimethylsilane (DMDMS)-derived hydrogen-selective silica membranes with Rh/Al2O3 catalysts and produced high-purity hydrogen from simulated biogas by operating the reactor under pressure on the reaction side while maintaining ambient pressure and excluding sweep gas that has often been used on the permeate side. We investigated changes in the performance of the DMDMS-derived membrane when exposed to pressurized hydrothermal conditions. The results indicated that pressure had a nonnegligible effect on membrane performance and led to a more severe decline in hydrogen permeance compared with exposure under similar hydrothermal conditions but at 0.1 MPa pressure. Although the performance of the DMDMS-derived membrane decreased, we developed a membrane reactor and operated it for hydrogen production. For the various pressures (0.6–1.0 MPa) and temperatures (500–600°C) tested, the conversions exceeded those in the packed-bed reactor, and high hydrogen purity was achieved without the use of sweep gas. Specifically, 55% conversion with 94% hydrogen purity was achieved when the membrane reactor was operated at 0.6 MPa and 600°C.

For the purpose of examining the initial development of the atmospheric response to a warm SST anomaly placed at the equator, an ensemble switch-on experiment is conducted with an aqua-planet GCM. An ensemble average of the size of 128 significantly reduces the transient noises caused by both small scale convective activity and large scale intraseasonal variability.In the first three days after the switch-on of the SST anomaly, a convection center develops above the warm SST area. As a barotropic response to the heating of convection center, a global increase of surface pressure occurs outside the low pressure region around the warm SST area. The response after the emergence of the high pressure anomaly is consistent with Gill (1980); a warm Kelvin wave-like anomaly is emitted to the east of the convection center, while a warm Rossby wave-like anomaly is emitted to the west.The Kelvin wave-like signal propagates at a speed slower than that of free Kelvin wave expected from its vertical wavelength, suggesting that the signal is a “moist” Kelvin wave. Transient decrease of precipitation occurs at the moist Kelvin wave front; a decrease of convection associated with the downward motion at the wave front is consistent with its slow propagation. After several days, precipitation recovers and is even intensified because of the surface frictional convergence associated with the Kelvin wave-like equatorial low pressure anomaly. To the west of the warm SST area, on the other hand, precipitation decreases monotonically. The continuous reduction of precipitation is caused by the equatorial surface frictional divergence associated with the relatively high pressure anomaly at the equator of the Rossby wave structure.Finally, there appears a slow zonally symmetric response within the Hadley cell characterized with surface pressure rise in the tropics and westerly wind anomaly in the troposphere. The change of eddy zonal momentum transport, together with the transport toward the lower level by the Hadley circulation and the geostrophic adjustment to the resulting low level westerly acceleration, seems to be responsible for the response.

An 87-year-old woman on oral prednisolone was diagnosed with a cholecystoduodenal fistula (CDF) caused by a cytomegalovirus-associated duodenal ulcer (DU) and was managed conservatively. A CDF caused by a DU is extremely rare. Although surgical repair is recommended for the treatment of a CDF caused by cholecystolithiasis, appropriate treatment for CDF caused by a DU remains controversial. This case report of a CDF caused by a DU suggests that conservative treatment is feasible in the absence of DU-associated complications, such as an untreatable hemorrhage or obstruction; this finding is compatible with previously reported cases that were conservatively treated.

Successful surgery for drug-resistant pediatric epilepsy can facilitate motor and cognitive development and improve quality of life by resolution or reduction of epileptic seizures. Therefore, surgery should be considered early in the disease course. However, in some cases, the estimated surgical outcomes are not achieved, and additional surgical treatments are considered. In this study, we investigated the clinical factors related with such unsatisfactory outcomes.We reviewed the clinical data of 92 patients who underwent 112 surgical procedures (69 resection and 53 palliation procedures). Surgical outcomes were assessed according to the postoperative disease status, which was classified as good, controlled, and poor. The following clinical factors were analyzed in relation to surgical outcome: sex, age at onset, etiology (malformation of cortical development, tumor, temporal lobe epilepsy, scar, inflammation, and non-lesional epilepsy), presence of genetic cause, and history of developmental epileptic encephalopathy. At a median of 59 (30-81.25) months after the initial surgery, the disease status was good in 38 (41%), controlled in 39 (42%), and poor in 15 (16%) patients. Among the evaluated factors, etiology exhibited the strongest correlation with surgical outcomes. Tumor-induced and temporal lobe epilepsy were correlated with good, whereas malformation of cortical development, early seizure onset, and presence of genetic cause were correlated with poor disease status. Although epilepsy surgery for the patients who present with the latter factors is challenging, these patients demonstrate a greater need for surgical treatment. Hence, development of more effective surgical options is warranted, including palliative procedures.

Background and objective: Plant-derived glucosylceramides (GlcCer) have been clinically reported to enhance skin barrier functions. GlcCer and ceramides (Cer) interact with immune-stimulating receptors on antigen-presenting cells, such as c-type lectin receptors and toll-like receptor 4. However, the clinical and immunological efficacies of orally ingested GlcCer remain unknown. Therefore, we herein conducted a clinical trial on the effects of rice-derived GlcCer (Oryza Ceramide®: OC) on cold symptoms, immune parameters, and SF-36 scores. Methods: OC (type PCD, 60 mg daily) containing 1.8 mg of GlcCer and 0.09 mg of Cer [t18:0/24:0] was used as the active sample. We enrolled 44 healthy Japanese individuals who are prone to catching colds and a low immune score. All subjects were randomly allocated to an active group (n = 22) or placebo group (n = 22). Capsules containing OC or the placebo were administered for 8 weeks. Cold symptom scores during the intervention were the primary outcome, while immune parameters and SF-36 scores measured after the 8-week intervention were the secondary outcomes. Results: Forty subjects completed the trial, and the per protocol set comprised 19 and 21 in the active and placebo groups, respectively. Regarding the primary outcome, cumulative days with cold symptoms, such as nasal congestion, throat irritation, a cough, headache, muscle pain, and diarrhea, was lower in the OC group. Among the secondary outcomes, physical functioning in SF-36 scores was improved in the OC group. Regarding immune parameters, a negative correlation was observed between changes in blood T-lymphocytes and cumulative days with cold symptoms. Laboratory tests revealed no abnormalities to suggest adverse effects of OC. Conclusions: OC consisting of GlcCer attenuated typical cold symptoms, such as nasal congestion, throat irritation, a cough, headache, muscle pain, and diarrhea, and improved physical conditions. Changes in T-lymphocytes may be one of the mechanisms by which OC ameliorates cold symptoms.

Background: Although cardiac rehabilitation (CR) has been reported to be effective for improving the prognosis of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), more patients must participate in CR during admission and as outpatients. Factors contributing to, and countermeasures against, the low CR participation rate need to be identified. Here we describe the protocol for a study designed to evaluate the effectiveness and problems of CR for AMI from the Japanese Registry of All Cardiac and Vascular Diseases (JROAD) and the JROAD–Japanese Diagnosis Procedure Combination system (JROAD-DPC) database.Methods and Results: This is a multicenter retrospective cohort study that will use the JROAD/JROAD-DPC database to evaluate the effectiveness of CR for AMI (JROAD-CR). Five thousand patients with AMI who were admitted to hospitals registered in the JROAD database in 2014 will be investigated with regard to their baseline characteristics, AMI severity and treatment, examination results, history of CR, and prognosis up to 5 years. We will also investigate the presence, quantity, and quality of CR, and evaluate the effectiveness of CR with respect to cost, exercise tolerance, and prognosis during admission and follow-up.Conclusions: The JROAD-CR study will seek to reveal the effectiveness of CR for AMI in the era of early reperfusion therapy and shortened hospitalization.

In this study, we aimed to evaluate the longitudinal changes in the cranial shape of healthy Japanese infants using a three-dimensional scanner and construct a normal values database for the growth process. Preterm infants (gestational age < 37 weeks), infants with neonatal asphyxia (5-minute Apgar score of <7), and patients who started helmet therapy for deformational plagiocephaly were excluded from this study. The first scan was performed at approximately 1 month of age, followed by two scans conducted at 3 and 6 months of age. The parameters considered were as follows: cranial length, width, height, circumference, volume, cranial vault asymmetry index, and cephalic index. A cranial vault asymmetry index >5% was defined as deformational plagiocephaly. Changes in each parameter were examined using repeated-measures analysis of variance classified by sex and deformational plagiocephaly status. The rate of increase in each parameter was also examined. In total, 88 infants (45 boys and 43 girls) were included in this study. All growth-related parameters were noted to increase linearly with time. Sex differences were observed in all parameters except cranial length. Deformational plagiocephaly was found to have no effect on growth-related parameters. Cranial volume increased by 60% from 1 to 6 months of age. The growth almost uniformly influenced the rate of increase in volume in each coordinate axis direction. Overall, the mean trends in three-dimensional parameters in infants up to 6 months of age were obtained using a three-dimensional scanner. These trends could be used as a guide by medical professionals involved in cranioplasty.

We previously reported that the combination of a very high-carbohydrate diet and endurance training increased glucose transporter 4 and glycogen concentration in skeletal muscle. However, it remains unclear whether they also affect the digestive and absorptive capacity in the pancreas and small intestine, which are suggested to be rate-limiting steps in the delivery of exogenous carbohydrates to skeletal muscle and muscle glycogen synthesis. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the effects of a very high-carbohydrate diet and endurance training on pancreatic amylase activity and intestinal glucose transporters in rats and to examine the relationship between these adaptations and their influence on muscle glycogen concentration. Male Sprague–Dawley rats (n=29) were fed a high-carbohydrate diet (59% carbohydrate) or a very high-carbohydrate diet (76% carbohydrate) for 4 wk. Half of the rats in each dietary group were subjected to 6-h swimming exercise training (two 3-h sessions separated by 45 min of rest) for 4 wk. Although there was no significant effect of diet or endurance training on sodium-dependent glucose transporter 1 and glucose transporter 2 contents in the intestine, the rats fed a very high-carbohydrate diet in combination with endurance training had substantially higher pancreatic amylase activity and muscle glycogen concentration. Furthermore, there was a positive correlation between pancreatic amylase activity and muscle glycogen concentration (r=0.599, p=0.001). In conclusion, intake of a very high-carbohydrate diet and endurance training synergistically elevated carbohydrate digestive capacity, which partially accounted for the higher muscle glycogen accumulation.

Background: The long-term effects of occupational injury (OI) on psychiatric diseases are unclear. This study assessed and compared the effects of OI, no injury (control), and non-OI (NOI) on the development of psychiatric diseases.Methods: We used Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Research Database to investigate the incidence of psychiatric disorders in OI, NOI, and control groups. The subjects were aged 20–50 years, actively employed in 2000, and did not have history of injury or psychiatric disorders. All subjects were followed from 2000 and were classified into OI, NOI, and control groups according to occurrence of target injury later on. Individuals in each group were matched by age, sex, insurance premium before the index date, and year of the index date. Psychiatric disease-free days were compared among the groups using survival analysis and Cox regression.Results: We included a total of 12,528 patients for final analysis, with 4,176 in each group. Compared with the control group, the OI group had an increased occurrence of trauma and stress-related disorder, depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, and alcohol and other substance dependence. These increases were similar to those in the NOI group. Elevated cumulative incidence rate of any psychiatric disorders was observed among those with OI or NOI up to 10 years after injury.Conclusion: We confirmed that OI and NOI induced psychiatric disorders. These findings highlight the need for workers’ compensation mechanisms to consider long-term psychological care among injured workers.

Soft rush (Juncus effusus L. var decipiens), known as igusa, is locally cultivated as an edible organic crop, and the dried powder is applied to the processing of unique foods in Japan. The current study investigates the anti-inflammatory effects of edible soft rush using lipoxygenase and hyaluronidase assays, and an activated macrophage cell model in vitro. Matcha green tea powder was tested for comparison. Hot-water and ethanol extracts of soft rush as well as matcha showed comparable lipoxygenase inhibition, with IC50 values of 123 to 145 µg/mL. For the hyaluronidase assay, IC50 values of the samples were 1.16 mg/mL or more. Macrophages cultured in the presence of hot-water and ethanol extracts of soft rush showed strongly suppressed nitric oxide production (IC50 of 120 µg/mL and 35.2 µg/mL, respectively) compared to matcha in a lipopolysaccharide-activated cell model. These results support the potential usefulness of edible soft rush powder for anti-inflammatory purposes.

本博士論文は、現在の韓国政治、文化の枠組を支える「韓国的ナショナリズム」の形成過程に、いかに宗教が大きな役割を果たしているかについて考察したものである。その宗教は、特に、日本という近代国家によって開国を迫られ、近代化の課題に直面していた朝鮮半島において、東学、親日仏教、プロテスタント(改新教)の三つが新たに成立したのである。そして、それらの成立の背景としては、東アジアを取り巻く国際情勢、とりわけ日本と韓国との政治的ダイナミズムが深い関わりをもっている。それゆえ、本論文では三つの宗教のそれぞれの成立と展開を、政治的な背景と関連させつつ、考察する。<br /> 第一に東学について。東学は19世紀後半、朝鮮半島で初めて成立した自生宗教であり、朝鮮王朝の封建的な儒教中心の既存の政治体制と両班による政治政権の掌握と運用に新たな変革を求めたものである。それは民族の宗教としての始まりと、民衆の真意を反映した民族主義と民族運動を成立させる役割を果たした。そして、特権身分階級として政治的・経済的な支配者である両班とその儒教体制による封建的な社会構造に対して挑戦を挑んだ民衆レベルの宗教であった。この東学の誕生は、間接的な原因ではあるが19世紀の朝鮮王朝の支配を突き崩すほどの力を発揮したといえるだろう。民衆運動と宗教運動を基盤にして形成された東学は、開国以後、日本帝国の経済的な進出に対しても積極的に対抗し、民族の自主と自立の精神を培養しようとした。この東学の民族主義は、宗教の問題であると同時に、政治的な問題であるといった方がよいだろう。東学が唱えていた思想は、朝鮮末期の政治問題や経済問題に民衆を結集させ、宗教的な内容よりもむしろ自由民権の宗教的哲学根拠を提供し、近代的な改革や社会変革を求める政治的な内容がより強く表出するものであった。この時期に形成され始めた民族主義は、国家ナショナリズムというよりも、民衆レベルでの民族の危機意識と開化精神の始まりといえよう。東学思想は19世紀後半期において、封建体制の対外的危機に対応する、農民や商人、賎民、没落両班の階級的利害、欲望、要求を反映した民衆運動として登場し、韓国の民族主義形成に大きく関わりを持っている政治的なものであった。しかし、日韓併合後の東学は日本帝国の政治的な力の前に内部分裂を繰り返し、民族宗教としての存在感が薄くなってしまった。その結果、解放後においても民族を支える宗教としての役割や政治舞台の中心に立つことはできなかったのである。<br /> 第二に親日仏教について。これまで仏教は幾度も民族的な危機に際して民衆を支えてきた伝統宗教であった。しかし、朝鮮時代の儒教的な政治体制から排除されることによって、町からその姿を消し、山に閉じこもるようになった。政治政権を掌握している儒者たち、いわゆる両班からの政治的な抑圧と蔑視と差別によって、朝鮮の仏教は非政治的な宗教集団となっていた。この仏教が、1876年の開国と共に朝鮮半島に進出してきた日本の僧侶によって復活し、政治的にも再生されるようになった。朝鮮仏教の宗教活動が解禁されたのは、日本帝国の経済的な進出が活発な時期であり、朝鮮王朝の儒教思想にも民衆を統制する力がなく、国運が傾き始めた頃のことでもあった。開国以来、日本の経済的な進出と1895年の日本の僧侶による嘆願によって、解禁されたため近代韓国仏教の始まりを「親日」仏教の始まりであるともいっている。朝鮮仏教は日韓併合後も政治的性格が日本の政治的支配や宗教政策に対して大きな反発を示す宗教運動や政治的な活動や動きも少なかった。また、解放後の成立した新政府による仏教浄化政策よって、親日仏教というレッテルを貼られるようになった。<br /> 第三はプロテスタント。1880年代に入ってきたキリスト教は、いわゆるプロテスタントのことであるが、儒教社会に迫害を受けたカトリックとは違い、封建的な社会であった朝鮮に近代的な先進文物や教育をもたらした宗教である。キリスト教は国を失った人々に、独立に対する熱望と組織的な体制を与え、近代韓国に本格的な民族的アイデンティティをもたらし、自覚することを可能にしたといえる。キリスト教教会は信者を中心に一般民衆が独立運動や民衆運動に積極的に参加する基盤を提供する役割を果たすと共に成長した。この韓国的キリスト教は、いわば純粋な聖書を土台にした信仰の基礎を作り上げることによって形成されたものではなく、愛国啓蒙運動や抗日民族運動の拠点を築く際に形成されたのである。それが日本帝国の植民地下での反日民族独立運動に参加し、韓国特有の民族イデオロギーを形成し、成長させることに結びつくことになる。その後、日本植民地からの解放されたキリスト教は、政治的・宗教的な苦難に対抗したことを様々な民族的な苦難を乗り越えてきた信仰的伝統にも結びつけるのである。そして、多くのキリスト教者は解放に伴って成立した新国家建設に参与し、教会の再建を図るために、儒教的な権威主義を背景にもつ西洋キリスト教者と結びつくようになったのである。<br /> 以上、三つの宗教を取り上げ、韓国的な民族主義宗教の形成と展開を近代韓国における、いわゆる政治と宗教の状況について論じてきた。封建的な儒教体制に挑戦するために民衆を結集させた力を持つ東学、親日的政治的な性格が付けられている韓国の近代仏教、日本帝国に立ち向かい愛国啓蒙運動や民族主義運動の立て役者となり、解放後は南北に分断された国土で共産主義に対抗し、大きく成長、定着したキリスト教に要約されよう。要するに、韓国的ナショナリズムの形成は、とりわけ宗教が同時に政治思想を帯びていたことを特徴とするのである。

Detection of anomalous cells such as cancer cells from normal blood cells has the potential to contribute greatly to cancer diagnosis and therapy. Conventional methods for the detection of cancer cells are usually tedious and cumbersome. Herein, we report on the use of a particle size analyzer for the convenient size-based differentiation of cancer cells from normal cells. Measurements made using a particle size analyzer revealed that size parameters for cancer cells are significantly greater (e.g., inner diameter and width) than the corresponding values for normal cells (white blood cells (WBC), lymphocytes and splenocytes), with no significant difference in shape parameters (e.g., circularity and convexity). The inner diameter of many cancer cell lines is greater than 10 µm, in contrast to normal cells. For the detection of WBC having similar size to that of cancer cells, we developed a PC software “Cancer Cell Finder” that differentiates them from cancer cells based on brightness stationary points on a cell surface. Furthermore, the aforementioned method was validated for cancer cell/clusters detection in spiked mouse blood samples (a B16 melanoma mouse xenograft model) and circulating tumor cell cluster-like particles in the cat and dog (diagnosed with cancer) blood samples. These results provide insights into the possible applicability of the use of a particle size analyzer in conjunction with PC software for the convenient detection of cancer cells in experimental and clinical samples for theranostics.

Bitcoin is currently a hot issue worldwide, and it is expected to become a new legal tender that replaces the current currency started with El Salvador. Due to the nature of cryptocurrency, however, difficulties in tracking led to the arising of misuses and abuses. Consequently, the pain of innocent victims by exploiting these bitcoins abuse is also increasing. We propose a way to detect new signatures by applying two-fold NLP-based clustering techniques to text data of Bitcoin abuse reports received from actual victims. By clustering the reports of text data, we were able to cluster the message templates as the same campaigns. The new approach using the abuse massage template representing clustering as a signature for identifying abusers is much efficacious.

To characterize active principles for prevention and treatment of diabetic complications, the isolation of protein glycation inhibitors from the fruiting body of Phellinus linteus was conducted in vitro using the model systems of hemoglobin-δ-gluconolactone (early stage), bovine serum albumin-methylglyoxal (middle stage), and Nα-acetyl-glycyl-lysine methyl ester-D-ribose (last stage) assays. Nine compounds were isolated from the active ethylacetate fraction of the fruiting body and identified as protocatechuic acid (1), protocatechualdehyde (2), caffeic acid (3), ellagic acid (4), hispidin (5), davallialactone (6), hypholomine B (7), interfungins A (8), and inoscavin A (9) by spectroscopic analyses. At the early stage of protein glycation, compounds 6, 8, and 9 exhibited inhibitory activity on hemoglobin A1C formation. For the middle stage, compounds 2, 6, and 9 showed a significant inhibitory effect on methylglyoxal-medicated protein modification and their IC50 values were 144.28, 213.15, and 158.66 μM, respectively. At the last stage of glycation, compound 8 was found to be a potent inhibitor of the cross-linking of proteins, which was more effective than that of aminoguanidine, a well-known inhibitor for advanced glycation end products. Consequently, compound 8 showed the most potent inhibitory effects at each stage of protein glycation. This mechanism may help to provide a protective effect against hyperglycemia-mediated protein damage.
