Background:Disease understanding in patients with congenital heart disease is important in transitional and lifelong care. This study aimed to develop the Japanese version of the Leuven Knowledge Questionnaire for Congenital Heart Disease (LKQCHD) and identify factors associated with disease-related knowledge.Methods and Results:After confirming the content and face validity of the scale, a questionnaire including the LKQCHD was distributed to 59 eligible patients aged >16 years attending a university hospital. For the 58 participants who responded (30 males, 28 females; median age 22 years), the mean (±SD) LKQCHD total score was 53.7±15.4, with mean (±SD) scores for each domain as follows: Disease and Treatment, 68.3±19.7; Preventing Complications, 45.8±19.0; Physical Activity, 74.1±34.1; Sex and Heredity, 37.9±35.4; and Contraception and Pregnancy, 40.2±29.1. Regarding known-groups validity, we found a positive correlation between the LKQCHD score and age (ρ=0.268, P=0.042), and a significantly low LKQCHD score in the moderate/severe disease group (η2=0.131, P=0.021). Regarding convergent validity, the LKQCHD score was positively correlated with the total and subscale scores of the Resilience Assessment Tool (r=0.213 [P=0.109] andr=0.405 [P=0.002], respectively).Conclusions:We confirmed the validity of the Japanese version of the LKQCHD, concluding that patient education regarding long-term complications, prevention methods, heredity, pregnancy, and childbirth is needed.

Fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) regulates several vascular endothelial cell functions, including proliferation. It has been suggested that the regulation may be modulated by reactive sulfur species (RSS), which are hydrogen sulfide and biomolecules containing persulfide/polysulfide groups. Since RSS promote vascular endothelial cell proliferation, we hypothesized that FGF-2 regulates the levels of RSS-producing enzymes in the cells. Bovine aortic endothelial cells were cultured and treated with FGF-2, and intracellular RSS levels were determined. The expression of RSS-producing enzymes, cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE), cystathionine β-synthase, 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase, and cysteinyl-tRNA synthetase 2, was evaluated, and the intracellular signaling pathway that mediates FGF-2 regulation of RSS accumulation was investigated. We revealed that FGF-2 upregulates the expression of RSS by selectively inducing CSE via the ERK1/2 signaling pathway in vascular endothelial cells. The effect of FGF-2 on the function of vascular endothelial cells may be modulated by intracellular RSS, especially higher-molecular-mass RSS such as protein persulfide, the levels of which are increased by the growth factor.

The purpose of this study is to consider whether "the regime of Yi Ui-min" really existed or not in the late 12th century Korea (Goryeo). Yi Ui-min was a military general who was born as a slave in Gyeongju. It is commonly accepted that he ruled the Goryeo government as the 4th leader of the "Goryeo military regime" from 1184 to 1196, when Choe Chung-heon assassinated him. It is difficult, however, to prove the existence of "the regime of Yi Ui-min" due to a lack of historical materials.This study examined the following three points to reconsider the theory of "the regime of Yi Uimin." Firstly, it examined how previous studies evaluated the regime. Through this examination, we found that previous studies had already pointed out the weakness of "the regime of Yi Uimin." Secondly, it critically discussed the theoretical grounds that support the regime’s existence. As a result, it was found that there are no historical records to support the claim directly. Thirdly, it analyzed the historical records that are inconsistent with the theory. The results revealed that Du Gyeong-seung was as powerful as Yi Ui-min, and that Yi Ui-min couldn’t overwhelm him till the end.The conclusion of this study is as follows; From 1184 to 1190 Yi Ui-min was not a prominent leader in the Goryeo government. From 1190 to 1196 there were two leaders, Yi Ui-min and Du Gyeong-seung in the Goryeo government. The common theory of "the regime of Yi Ui-min" says that Yi Ui-min ruled the Goryeo government then as a dictator, although he was less powerful than other military leaders. But the theory of "the dyarchy of Yi Ui-min and Du Gyeong-seung" is closer to the actual situation than that of "the regime of Yi Ui-min." The next paper will explore the relationship between these two leaders.

The synthesis of bioinert oxide films on pure Ti surfaces by chemical-hydrothermal treatment was investigated. Some pure Ti substrates were chemically treated with H2O2/HNO3 to form a TiO2 gel layer prior to hydrothermal treatment. Two types of solutions in the hydrothermal treatment were prepared: Zr(OH)4 gel dispersed NH3/CH3CH(OH)COOH solution and Zr dissolved NH3/CH3CH(OH)COOH solution. A uniform layer of very fine crystals were formed on the surfaces of the specimens subjected to the hydrothermal treatment. Sharp peaks attributed to TiO2 and/or ZrO2 appeared after the hydrothermal treatment. ZrO2-TiO2 composite films were successfully produced on the Ti surface by hydrothermal treatment with the Zr(OH)4 gel dispersed NH3/CH3CH(OH)COOH solution at 453 K for 12 h, following the chemical treatment. The proliferation of osteoblast-like MC3T3-E1 cells was also investigated. The cells were observed to have spread their pseudopodiums. The cell density increased monotonically with incubation period for all specimens. The proliferation of cells was strongly influenced by the surface roughness; the cell densities increased with decreasing roughness in the range of Ra=20–80 nm. Furthermore, the surface products with TiO2 showed a relatively low rate of proliferation. The strong attachment of cells to the surface may hinder cell migration.

The spelling of the specific name monticolus in the scientific name of a spider, Cybaeus monticolus Kobayashi, 2006, does not violate any relevant provisions of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. This spelling is, therefore, the “correct original spelling” of the specific name under Article 32.2 of the Code. Regardless of whether this name is deemed an adjective or a noun in apposition, it should be maintained unaltered when it is combined with the generic name Cybaeus L. Koch, 1868, the gender of which is masculine. The later spelling monticola, as presented in the combination Cybaeus monticola in a recent arachnological treatise and then in an important online taxonomic resource from which its use appears to be spreading, is an “incorrect subsequent spelling” under Article 33.3 of the Code.

バークレー神学で展開される普遍贖罪論は、正統派カルヴィニズムの二重予定説に対抗する形で、「内なる光」、「主の訪れの日」、「反抗しない、受動性」という三つの概念によって展開される。しかし、特にこの「受動性」という概念を巡って、バークレー神学の評価は大きく分かれる。本稿では、彼の思想の持つ意義を、当時の神学的思想的状況の中で批判的に考察することによって解明する。考察の結果として分かるのは、「反抗しない」という事態は「信仰さえも求めない」程に徹底した受動性を意味し、神の働きかけに対して魂の扉を開けるという積極的意義を持つことである。それ故、フォックスと同様に、彼はあくまで神の働きかけを深い沈黙の内に待ち望むべきと説くのである。よって、バークレー神学は、消極的態度の根源であるとの従来の評価とは異なり、クエーカーの素朴なメッセージを保持することに重要な役割を果たしたと言えるだろう。

月面での長期間滞在または居住を可能にするためには、月面での生活で生じる有機性廃棄物の処理や植物生産のための元素資源の欠乏といった問題を解決する必要がある。月面農場ワーキンググループ第3グループでは、持続的な月面農場を確立させるために必要なシステムの一つを構築することを目的として、ISRU(In-Situ Resource Utilization;その場資源利用技術)などを念頭におきながら、月面における効率的な有機性廃棄物の資源循環のあり方について議論を行った。月-地球間の輸送は莫大なコストがかかるため、作物を生産するために必要な炭素や窒素などの元素は、その都度の交換輸送ではなく、月面での生活において生じる作物残渣などの有機性廃棄物から、効率的に回収して循環利用する必要があると考えられる。月面において生じる有機性廃棄物は、非可食部などの作物残渣や養液栽培廃液、尿、糞便などが想定された。それらを効率的に循環させるためには、月面での現地試験が必要であるが、地球上で実用化されている嫌気的処理であるメタン発酵や好気的処理である活性汚泥法、堆肥化などの微生物を利用した処理が有効であり、資源循環の中核を成すと考えられた。本稿では、これまでの第3グループの検討結果を取りまとめ、持続的な月面農場を確立するための資源循環システムや月の鉱物(レゴリス)の資源としての利用について提案を行う。

A市B区における3ヶ月児,1歳6ヶ月児,3歳児の核家族世帯の母親300人を対象に,人的環境面が育児不安にどのように影響しているかについて検討した。母親の育児歴や育児の協力者の有無,児の年齢などにより母親の抱える悩みは様々であった。育児を行うにあたり多少の悩みを持つこと自体は問題ではなく,悩みの程度や育児環境,協力者の有無,協力者の精神的なサポートが得られるかどうかが大切である。それ故,近年の社会情勢を加味し,地域特性を捉えた上で母親だけでなく,父親も含めた妊娠期からの継続した関わりが必要である。そのためには,保健師は子育ての情報や知識の提供だけでなく,育児者間の交流が図れる場や,いつでも悩みを打ち明けられる場の提供などの精神面のフォローが必要である。

Reactive sulfur species (RSS) include biological persulfide molecules that protect cells against oxidative stress and heavy metal toxicity. Vascular endothelial cells regulate blood coagulation and fibrinolytic activity, and prevent vascular disorders such as atherosclerosis. We hypothesized that RSS protect vascular endothelial cells not only from nonspecific cell damage but also from specific functional damage through regulation of specific cell functions. In the present study, cultured bovine aortic endothelial cells were treated with sodium trisulfide, a sulfane sulfur donor, and both [3H]thymidine incorporation and effects on cell cycle were analyzed. These results suggest that RSS stimulate vascular endothelial cell proliferation. RSS may reduce the functional cytotoxicity of antiproliferative agents.

The solar radiation incident on the soil surface below a plant canopy varies temporally and spatially, because the shadow of the canopy intercepts the light. The complicated solar radiation environment, brought by the plant shadow, affects the surrounding environment, including the soil moisture, soil temperature, energy balance on the soil surface, and so on. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of an isolated plant on the surrounding environment. To clarify the complicated solar radiation environment on the soil surface, the shadow tracks of the isolated plant are described using the geometry of plant structure and sun locations. The soil surface temperature was measured instantaneously using an infrared thermal imaging camera to evaluate the effect of the spatial distribution of the solar radiation on the thermal environment. Observation results indicated that the spatial distribution of the soil surface temperature is generated by the shadow of the isolated plant. To evaluate the shadow effect on the soil moisture and temperature, a numerical model for soil moisture and heat transfer was introduced. The simulation result indicated that soil moisture and temperature change spatially and temporally, affected by the complicated solar radiation environment. The daily soil surface evaporation was quantified using the numerical model. The results indicate that the soil surface evaporation changed spatially because of the irradiance distribution generated by the plant shadow.

<p>Japan has since ancient times had a custom called <i>omiai</i> (loosely translated as "matchmaking" when searching for a marriage partner). The examples of the matching of large firms and start-ups at the Innovation Leaders Summit in Japan discussed in this paper can truly be called "omiai." Unlike Western-style matching, in this summit, participating firms and managers alike have little experience with alliances, and matchmakers have no strong commitment, as noted by Holzmann, Sailer, and Katzy (2014). Instead, just as with omiai, matchmakers exchange profiles of large firms and start-ups new to alliances and simply create a place for them to meet and make matches.</p>

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most prevalent malignant primary brain tumor with a high recurrence rate. Despite multimodal therapy including surgical resection, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, the median survival time after the initial diagnosis of GBM is approximately 14 months. Since cancer stem cells (CSCs) are considered the leading cause of cancer recurrence, glioblastoma stem cell-targeted therapy is a promising strategy for the treatment of GBM. However, because CSC heterogeneity has been implicated in the difficulties of CSC-target therapy, more in-depth knowledge of CSC biology is still required to develop novel therapies.In this study, we established single cell-derived tumorspheres from human glioblastoma U87MG cells. One of these tumorspheres, P4E8 clone, showed CSC-like phenotypes, such as self-renewal capacity, expression of CSC markers, resistance to anti-cancer agents, and in vivo tumorigenicity. Therefore, we used P4E8 cells as a cell-based model of glioblastoma stem cells (GSCs). Gene expression analysis using microarray indicated that the most highly expressed genes in P4E8 cells compared to the parental U87MG were PC3-secreted microprotein (MSMP). Furthermore, MSMP was expressed in patient-derived GSCs and human glioma tissues at the protein level, implying that MSMP might contribute to glioma development and progression.

Mouth rinses are a useful supplementary tool for the prevention of oral infectious diseases. Although the antimicrobial effects of mouth rinses have been investigated, there are few studies focusing on the comparison of the effects among various oral bacterial species. In the present study, the inhibitory effect of a commercial mouth rinse, “ConCoolF,” and each of its major components, chlorhexidine gluconate, ethanol, and green tea extract, on multiple species of oral bacteria were investigated. Inhibition of bacterial growth was observed in all cariogenic streptococcal species with different genera, serotypes, and strains isolated from different countries when either the complete mouth rinse or chlorhexidine gluconate were used. However, no growth inhibition was observed when the bacteria were exposed to ethanol or green tea extract. Interestingly, growth inhibition was greatly reduced in non-cariogenic streptococci compared with cariogenic streptococci. In addition, both the mouth rinse and chlorhexidine gluconate inhibited the biofilms formed by both Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) and Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis), among which the inhibitory effect against S. mutans was higher than that against P. gingivalis. These results suggest that a mouth rinse containing chlorhexidine gluconate, ethanol, and green tea extract, or chlorhexidine gluconate alone, exhibits antimicrobial activity against several oral bacteria species, having greater activity against pathogenic bacteria.

Objective Uremic toxins are known risk factors for cancer in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD). Although adequate removal of uremic toxins might reduce the cancer risk by improving subclinical uremia, the relationship between the dialysis dose and risk of cancer death in patients undergoing HD remains unclear. Methods In this prospective observational study, 3,450 patients undergoing HD were followed up for 4 years. The primary outcome was cancer death. Patients were divided into quartiles according to their baseline Kt/V levels. The association between the Kt/V levels and risk of cancer death was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional-hazards model. Results A total of 111 patients (3.2%) died from cancer during the 4-year observational period. The 4-year survival rate decreased linearly with decreasing Kt/V. The multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for cancer death were 2.23 (95% CI, 1.13-4.56), 1.77 (0.88-3.63), and 1.89 (1.04-3.56) in quartile (Q) 1, Q2, and Q3, respectively, compared with patients in the highest Kt/V category (Q4) (P for trend = 0.06). Every 0.1 increase in Kt/V was associated with a reduction of 8% in cancer death (HR 0.92, 95% CI 0.85-0.99). Conclusion A lower dialysis dose might be associated with a higher risk of cancer death in patients undergoing HD. Kt/V is a simple indicator of dialysis dose used in clinical practice and might be a useful modifiable factor for predicting the risk of cancer death. Further basic and interventional studies are needed to confirm the apparent reduction in cancer death associated with increasing the dialysis dose.
