The three–dimensional (3–D) structure of crystals around the interface between massive potassium (K)–feldspar and quartz–feldspar intergrowth (graphic granite) of two samples collected from a pegmatite body in Ishikawa town, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, was determined by X–ray computed tomography (CT). Based on the results and additional information obtained by serial thin section and polarizing observations, the formation processes of graphic granite and pegmatite bodies are discussed. The most important finding of the 3–D observation using X–ray CT is the very flat spatial distribution of the tips of the quartz crystals. The sharp interface between the graphic and single–phase parts suggests that the change from graphic granite to massive K–feldspar crystallization corresponds to the transition of the thermodynamic conditions at the growth front from non–equilibrium to equilibrium. This indication leads to a new model for the pegmatite genesis, that is, graphic granite forms at the marginal zone under non–equilibrium conditions shortly after the intrusion of magma due to rapid cooling by the cold host rock body and, subsequently, the crystallization of massive K–feldspar starts when the conditions at the crystal growth front reenter the ‘feldspar + melt’ field in the phase diagram due to the relaxation of the conditions. Other results related to the conditions of the growth environment with coexisting aqueous fluid, such as the connectivity of the quartz crystals, are also discussed, for example, the influence of the supercritical state on the nucleation of quartz crystals.

In the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity accompanying tooth substance defects such as wedge-shape defects, hypoesthesia can be achieved by applying a desensitizing agent before carrying out restoration using resin composite. However, almost no research has investigated the adhesion of resin to dentin coated with the latest desensitizing agents. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of various desensitizing agents on the adhesion of resin to dentin in combination with a 1-step self-etch system by using a hypersensitive dentin model in which the dentinal tubules were opened without etching and there was almost no smear layer on the intertubular dentin. Specimens with a #4000 polished dentin flat surface were ultrasonically cleaned for 60 min (15 min × 4 times). Then, the bond strength, failure modes, and micromorphology of surfaces coated with desensitizing agent to which resin was bonded immediately afterward and surfaces coated with desensitizing agent to which the resin was bonded after storage for 7 days in water were compared against a control to which no desensitizing agent was applied. The desensitizing agents used in this research did not promote adhesion of the resin immediately after application, but rather suppressed or completely obstructed it. Although deposits of microparticles and thin film material, which were observed immediately after application, tended to disappear after 7 days of storage in water, some of the desensitizing agents exhibited the same bond strength as the control, whereas other desensitizing agents did not show recovery of adhesion strength. Therefore, care is required when performing resin restoration immediately after application of a desensitizing agent, depending on the agent used, and caution must be exercised in the selection of desensitizing agents in the clinical setting.

Two specimens of the large, predaceous salifid leech Mimobdella japonica Blanchard, 1897 were collected from Okinawajima island, Ryukyu Islands, Japan, representing the first record of this species from Okinawajima. A description is provided of the external and internal morphology of these specimens and two additional specimens of M. japonica from Amami-oshima island, also in the Ryukyu Islands. COI sequences showed no difference between the two specimens of M. japonica from Okinawajima and the two specimens from Amami-oshima (K2P distance=0%). This suggests that M. japonica is an introduced species in one or both of these islands.

Canine distemper virus (CDV) causes a lethal disease among members of the Carnivora. To clarify the distribution of CDV in wild animals, we examined 106 raccoon sera collected from two prefectures in Japan, Hyogo and Osaka, from 2005 to 2007. Among them, 34 raccoons (32.1%) possessed a virus-neutralizing (VN) antibody to KDK-1 strain (genotype Asia-1). There was no significant difference in seroprevalence of CDV regardless of places, gender, and body weights. In Hyogo, a geometric mean of VN titers to KDK-1 was significantly higher than that to Onderstepoort (vaccine strain), indicating that KDK-1-like CDV different from vaccine strain might have spread among raccoon population in Hyogo. In conclusion, CDV is epidemic among feral raccoons in Japan, suggesting that CDV might have been spreading among Japanese wild animals.

Introduction Traumatic experiences and disordered sleep are strongly associated with drinking problems. We examined the effects of experiencing the Great East Japan Earthquake and subsequent nuclear power plant accident, and of sleep problems, on behavioral changes observed in non-drinkers.Methods This study examined cross-sectional data from the Mental Health and Lifestyle Survey conducted among residents in restricted areas of Fukushima in 2012. Participants were 21,454 evacuees aged 20 years or older at the time of disaster. People who did not drink before the disaster but became drinkers afterwards were compared with the rest of the cohort. We analyzed the association between behavioral changes in non-drinkers and potentially predictive variables, using logistic regression. Results The behavioral change of non-drinkers becoming drinkers (n=2,148) was significantly related to being male (OR=1.93, 95% CI:1.74-2.15), being younger (21-49 yrs, OR=1.85, 95% CI: 1.60-2.13), having less educational attainment (up to high school graduate, OR=1.21, 95% CI:1.09-1.35), smoking (OR=1.22, 95% CI:1.08-1.38), losing family or relatives (OR=1.21, 95% CI:1.07-1.37), change in employment (OR=1.19, 95% CI:1.07-1.32), having severe sleep problems as measured by a Japanese version of the Athens Insomnia Scale (3-8, OR=1.45, 95% CI:1.30-1.62), and severity of traumatic symptoms as measured by the PTSD Checklist Stressor-Specific (PCL-S) score (<44, OR=1.33, 95% CI:1.17–1.51).Conclusion Having sleep problems and having more severe traumatic symptoms are significantly related to non-drinkers becoming drinkers.

We herein report five patients with nasal mucosa and sinus involvement who were diagnosed with immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD). In all cases, the lacrimal, parotid, and submandibular glands were swollen; biopsies of these glands were risky, so the labium and nasal mucosa were instead targeted. All patients tested positive through these biopsies, suggesting alternative sites for confirming IgG4-RD. These five patients had first been diagnosed and unsuccessfully treated for allergic rhinitis or chronic sinusitis. After the IgG4-RD diagnosis, they were administered corticosteroid therapy, which drastically improved the nasal mucosa and sinus involvement. When refractory allergic rhinitis or sinusitis is detected, IgG4-RD should be considered.

Measurements of the differential production of electrons from open-heavy-flavor hadrons with charm- and bottom-quark content in p+p collisions at √s=200 GeV are presented. The measurements proceed through displaced-vertex analyses of electron tracks from the semileptonic decay of charm and bottom hadrons using the PHENIX silicon-vertex detector. The relative contribution of electrons from bottom decays to inclusive heavy-flavor-electron production is found to be consistent with fixed-order-plus-next-to-leading-log perturbative-QCD calculations within experimental and theoretical uncertainties. These new measurements in p+p collisions provide a precision baseline for comparable forthcoming measurements in A+A collisions.

The relationship between jet production in the central region and the underlying-event activity in a pseudorapidity-separated region is studied in 4.0 pb-1 of s=2.76 TeV pp collision data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The underlying event is characterised through measurements of the average value of the sum of the transverse energy at large pseudorapidity downstream of one of the protons, which are reported here as a function of hard-scattering kinematic variables. The hard scattering is characterised by the average transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of the two highest transverse momentum jets in the event. The dijet kinematics are used to estimate, on an event-by-event basis, the scaled longitudinal momenta of the hard-scattered partons in the target and projectile beam-protons moving toward and away from the region measuring transverse energy, respectively. Transverse energy production at large pseudorapidity is observed to decrease with a linear dependence on the longitudinal momentum fraction in the target proton and to depend only weakly on that in the projectile proton. The results are compared to the predictions of various Monte Carlo event generators, which qualitatively reproduce the trends observed in data but generally underpredict the overall level of transverse energy at forward pseudorapidity.

Background: Mumps deafness causes serious problems, and incidence data are needed to identify its disease burden. However, such data are limited, and the reported incidence is highly variable. Nationwide studies in Japan with a large age range are lacking. Methods: This was a retrospective observational investigation of the 2005–2017 mumps burden using employment-based health insurance claims data. Data were analyzed for 5,190,326 people aged 0–64 years to estimate the incidence of mumps deafness. Results: Of 68,112 patients with mumps (36,423 males; 31,689 females), 102 (48 males; 54 females) developed mumps deafness—an incidence of 15.0 per 10,000 patients (1 in 668 patients). Fifty-four (52.9%) patients had mumps deafness in childhood (0–15 years), and 48 (47.1%) had mumps deafness in adolescence and adulthood (16–64 years); most cases occurred in childhood, the peak period for mumps onset. The incidence of mumps deafness per 10,000 patients was 73.6 in adolescence and adulthood, 8.4 times higher than the incidence of 8.8 in childhood (P < 0.001). In childhood, the incidence of mumps deafness was 7.2 times higher among 6–15-year-olds (13.8 [95% CI, 10.2-18.2]) than among 0–5-year-olds (1.9 [95% CI, 0.6-4.5]), and this difference was statistically significant (P < 0.001). No sex difference was observed. Conclusions: The incidence of mumps deafness per 10,000 patients aged 0–64 years was 15.0 (1 in 668 patients). A secondary risk of deafness following mumps virus infection was identified not only for children, but also for adolescents and adults.

Marchiafava-Bignami disease (MBD) is a rare alcohol-associated disorder characterized by demyelination and necrosis of the corpus callosum. We herein present the case of a 56-year-old man with chronic alcoholism who was admitted to our hospital in a coma without focal or lateralizing neurological signs. MRI revealed a callosal lesion consistent with MBD and additional bifrontal linear cortical lesions. The callosal lesion completely disappeared with intravenous administration of high-dose multivitamins and corticosteroids, although the patient remained in a vegetative state. This case further supports the notion that cortical involvement in patients with MBD is a predictor of a poor prognosis.

Selective laser melting (SLM) is widely used for the additive manufacturing (AM) of metal components, which can produce net shape complex geometries. Novel titanium alloy/bioactive glass composites were successfully fabricated via SLM method for biomedical applications. The fabricated composites contained a Ti5Si3 phase, which resulted from the reaction between the titanium alloy and the bioactive glass. The phase can improve the bonding strength between composite and bone. Additionally, the remained amorphous bioactive glass phase could improve bioactivity. The present study opens a new avenue for developing new titanium alloy/bioactive glass composites with optimal bioactivity and bonding strength with the bone.

A rapid and sensitive immunoassay for the determination of vitellogenin (Vg) is described. The method involves a sequential injection analysis (SIA) system equipped with an amperometric detector and a neodymium magnet. Magnetic beads, onto which an antigen (Vg) was immobilized, were used as a solid support in an immunoassay. The introduction, trapping and release of magnetic beads in an immunoreaction cell were controlled by means of the neodymium magnet and by adjusting the flow of the carrier solution. The immunoassay was based on an indirect competitive immunoreaction of an alkaline phosphatase (ALP) labeled anti-Vg monoclonal antibody between the fraction of Vg immobilized on the magnetic beads and Vg in the sample solution. The immobilization of Vg on the beads involved coupling an amino group moiety of Vg with the magnetic beads after activation of a carboxylate moiety on the surface of magnetic beads that had been coated with a polylactate film. The Vg-immobilized magnetic beads were introduced and trapped in the immunoreaction cell equipped with the neodymium magnet; a Vg sample solution containing an ALP labeled anti-Vg antibody at a constant concentration and a p-aminophenyl phosphate (PAPP) solution were sequentially introduced into the immunoreaction cell. The product of the enzyme reaction of PAPP with ALP on the antibody, p-aminophenol, was transported to an amperometric detector, the applied voltage of which was set at +0.2 V vs. an Ag/AgCl reference electrode. A sigmoid calibration curve was obtained when the logarithm of the concentration of Vg was plotted against the peak current of the amperometric detector using various concentrations of standard Vg sample solutions (0 - 500 ppb). The time required for the analysis is less than 15 min.

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to determine the lower-limb muscle activities during muscle exercise using an on-the-bed muscle training device that utilizes the intermittent inflation of an oval rubber balloon placed against the sole. [Subjects and Methods] Ten healthy subjects were asked to adopt a semi-recumbent position with a flat oval chloridized polyvinyl balloon placed against the sole. The subjects were asked to extend both their legs when they felt the inflation of the balloon on their plantar surface. This exercise was defined as leg exercise against intermittent sole pressure stimulation (ExISPS). [Results] The root-mean-square (RMS)-EMG values of the vastus medialis during ExISPS in the semi-recumbent position were similar to those when standing up from 45-degree knee flexion and calf-raising. The RMS-EMG values of the biceps femoris showed no significant difference among these exercises. The RMS-EMG values of gastrocnemius medialis during ExISPS in the semi-recumbent position were higher than those when standing up from 45-degree knee flexion and standing up from a chair. [Conclusion] The findings of this study suggest that the muscle activities during ExISPS mimic or are greater than those required of the leg in daily life.

Pathological angiogenesis is a leading cause of blindness in several retinal diseases. The key driving factor inducing pathological angiogenesis is the pronounced hypoxia leading to a marked, increased production of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). The aim of this study was to determine whether the abnormal vascular growth occurs in a manner dependent on the degree of the vascular defects. Vascular defects of two different degrees were created in the retina by subcutaneously treating neonatal rats with the VEGF receptor (VEGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitor KRN633 on postnatal day (P) 4 and P5 (P4/5) or P7 and P8 (P7/8). The structure of the retinal vasculature changes was examined immunohistochemically. Prevention of vascular growth and regression of some preformed capillaries were observed on the next day, after completion of each treatment (i.e., P6 and P9). The vascular regrowth occurred as a result of eliminating the inhibitory effect on the VEGFR signaling pathway. KRN633 (P4/5)-treated rats exhibited a retinal vasculature with aggressive intravitreal neovascularization on P21. On the other hand, the appearance of tortuous arteries is a representative vascular pathological feature in retinas of KRN633 (P7/8)-treated groups. These results suggest that an interruption of the retinal vascular development at different time points induces different vascular pathological features in the retina. Pharmacological agents targeting the VEGF signaling pathway are useful for creating an abnormal retinal vasculature with various pathological features in order to evaluate the efficacy of anti-angiogenic compounds.

This paper reexamines product development in the Japanese electrical industry after WWII from the perspective of strategies for reducing licensing costs. Immediately after the war, Japanese electronics manufacturers raised their own level of technology by introducing technology from abroad. However, in their effort to arrive at corporate policies enabling them to provide products at as low a price as possible, there was a limit to the sheer amount of licensing costs they could bear to carry out licensed production. Japanese electronics manufacturers, in many cases, engaged in cross-licensing based on their own patents in order to offset licensing fees and keep costs down. To further control licensing costs, manufacturers had no choice but to produce products based on licenses already in hand; each electronics manufacturer established a central R&D laboratory. Up until the early 1990s, “Not Invented Here” was a widely adopted philosophy which, as it turns out, was a historically unique approach.
