The aims of the present study were to investigate what kind of anxiety radiation decontamination workers have, and to analyze what factors are associated to presence or absence of their anxieties. A self-administered questionnaire was conducted, which included 10 anxiety items. A logistic regression model was then used to determine what factors were related to increased anxiety. Of 531 workers who completed the questionnaire, 477 (91.6%) complained of at least one of the 8 anxiety items. The most common anxiety item was job security (41.8%), and the least common item was working hours (6.0%). The logistic regression analysis revealed that the most common causes of related to presence of anxiety was heat illness and the most common causes of related to absence of anxiety was having someone available for consultation. The current study revealed the kinds of anxiety, and the factors associated with presence or absence of each anxiety among radiation decontamination workers. These results provide important implications for the improvement of educational content and occupational health management for radiation decontamination workers in the future.

Biological responses due to thermal stimuli were categorized based on the areas of the human body as well as on the modalities of thermal stresses such as icing, cooling and heating applications. These biological responses reported in previous papers were analyzed based on the concepts of Selective Brain Cooling (SBC) and long-term fever range (FR)-mild hyperthermia. Although no thermophysiological problems occurred in the case reports of biological responses induced by SBC, the effects of those induced by cooling of the body trunk and extremities were not so thoroughly evaluated. On the other hand, the idea of long-term fever range (FR)-mild hyperthermia (39.5-41.0℃) proved to be helpful in therapies enhancing the immune defenses against virulent bacterial diseases through the proliferation of Langerhans cells (LCs) and, under these conditions, it might even be beneficially combined with Selective Brain Cooling (SBC) and body heating to enhance human health and physical performance.

Axillary buds of broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var. Italica) develop and produce lateral heads after the apical heads have been harvested; however, lateral heads are not used because of their small size, and only one apical head is generally harvested from one plant. In this study, we aimed to establish a new method to harvest two heads of 12 cm diameter from a plant by pinching the apical bud and growing two axillary buds (“V-shaping” process) in autumn cropping. First, we measured the probability of axillary bud generation (PA) at each leaf axil and calculated the integration of the PA (IPA). The PA from the 5th to 8th true leaves was especially high, and the IPA reached 4.7. Next, we investigated the period of harvest and yield of heads at different times (3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th, 13th, and 15th leaf stage) of V-shaping in Field 1 (Ibaraki Prefecture, Tsukuba City). In V-shaped plots from the 7th to 11th leaf stages, the number of marketable heads significantly increased in comparison to that of the control. It increased by 61% of that of the control at the 11th leaf stage. However, the period of harvest was delayed, and the quality of heads deteriorated by cold injury when V-shaping was conducted from the 11th stage onward. Finally, we assessed the applicability of V-shaping cultivation in other fields. V-shaping was conducted from the 9th to 11th leaf stage. The number of marketable heads increased by 69 and 62% in Field 2 (Ibaraki Prefecture, Tsukubamirai City) and Field 3 (Nara Prefecture, Uda City), respectively. However, it only slightly increased in Field 4 (Mie Prefecture, Tsu City). Comparison of cultivation conditions at these 4 fields revealed that early transplantation, to allow an approximate 300°C day increase in effective heat unit summation for harvesting before the daily minimum temperature fell below approximately 0°C, was important. In addition, improving the drainage of the field seems important, and the input of manure compost (long-term fertilizer effect) may improve the quality and yield of heads. Thus, we concluded that V-shaping cultivation enabled the harvesting of two heads by V-shaping and increased the number of marketable heads by more than 60% in a wide area.

In this study, two temperature-induced lipocalin genes SlTIL1 and SlTIL2, and a chloroplastic lipocalin gene SlCHL were isolated from ‘Micro-Tom’ tomato. The coding sequences of SlTIL1, SlTIL2 and SlCHL were 558, 558, and 1002 bp, respectively. By TargetP analysis, no characteristic transit peptides were predicted in the proteins of SlTIL1 and SlTIL2, while a chloroplastic transit peptide was predicted in the protein of SlCHL. The subcellular localization results indicated that SlTIL1 and SlTIL2 proteins were major localized in the plasma membrane, while SlCHL was localized in chloroplast. To understand the function of lipocalins, transgenic tomato over-expressed SlTIL1, SlTIL2 and SlCHL and their virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) plants were generated. The phenotypes were significantly affected when the SlTIL1, SlTIL2 and SlCHL were over-expressed or silenced by VIGS, which suggested that the three lipocalins played important roles in regulating the growth and development of tomato. In addition, the level of ROS (O2− and H2O2) was low in SlTIL1, SlTIL2 and SlCHL over-expressed plants, while it was high in their silenced plants. The changes in the expression of SODs were consistent with the accumulations of ROS, which indicated that lipocalins might have an important role in abiotic oxidative stress tolerance in tomato plants. Especially SlTIL1 and SlTIL2 are localized around their membranes and protect them from ROS. The results will contribute to elucidating the functions of lipocalin in plants, and provide new strategies to improve the tolerance to abiotic stress in tomato plants.

The modified ABC model explains the floral morphology of many monocots, such as the lily and tulip, in which the perianth consists of two layers of almost identical petaloid tepals. According to the modified ABC model, B-class genes are expressed in two perianth whorls, inducing the petaloid structure in both whorls 1 and 2. In this study, we analyzed the expression and function of the B-class genes in the grape hyacinth (Muscari armeniacum). We isolated two DEFICIENS (DEF)-like genes (MaDEF1 and MaDEF2) and three GLOBOSA (GLO)-like genes (MaGLOA1, MaGLOA2, and MaGLOB) from M. armeniacum using rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE). Expression analysis showed that MaDEF1 and MaDEF2 were expressed in whorls 1, 2, and 3, whereas MaGLOA1, MaGLOA2, and MaGLOB were expressed in all four whorls. These results support the modified ABC model in M. armeniacum. Overexpression of MaGLOA1 and MaGLOB in Arabidopsis thaliana resulted in a morphological change of sepals to petaloid structures in whorl 1, indicating that the function of these genes is similar that of the B-class orthologs PISTILLATA and GLO in A. thaliana and Antirrhinum majus, respectively. In addition, yeast two-hybrid assays revealed strong protein–protein interactions between MaDEF1 and MaGLOA1, suggesting that MaDEF1–MaGLOA1 is likely to have the main B-function in M. armeniacum. These data support the modified ABC model in M. armeniacum.

Capecitabine is an oral fluoropyrimidine carbamate which is converted to 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) via 3 enzymatic step to 5'-deoxy-5-fluorocytidine (5'-DFCR), 5'-deoxy-5-fluorouridine (5'-DFUR), and finally 5-FU. We performed 4-week toxicity studies of capecitabine (N4-pentyloxycarbonyl-5'-deoxy-5-fluorouridine), galocitabine (trimethoxybenzyl-5'-deoxy-5-fluorocytidine), 4 different fluoropyrimidine carbamate analogs (R=butyl, isopentyl, propyl, or phenethyl), and 5'-DFUR in cynomolgus monkeys with toxicokinetic measurements of intact molecules, 5'-DFCR, and 5'-DFUR. Four-week toxicity data for capecitabine in rats and mice were also obtained for comparison. Capecitabine, galocitabine, butyl, and isopentyl analogs showed similar toxicities in hematopoietic and intestinal organs at 1.0 mmol/kg and the AUCs of 5'-DFUR were approximately 40 to 60 μg*hr/ml. These compounds showed slight toxicity at 0.5 mmol/kg and no toxicity at 0.1 mmol/kg, and AUCs of 5'-DFUR were approximately 30 and 5 μg*hr/ml, respectively. Propyl and phenethyl analogs showed slight toxicity at 1.0 mmol/kg and no toxicity at 0.5 mmol/kg, and AUCs of 5'-DFUR were approximately 30 and 10 μg*hr/ml, respectively. On the other hand, severe and slight-to-moderate toxicity was observed at 0.5 and 0.25 mmol/kg in 5'-DFUR-treated monkeys and AUCs of 5'DFUR were 35.6 and 5.2 μg*hr/ml, respectively. In mice and rats, the toxicity of capecitabine was less than in monkeys relative to dose, but 5'-DFUR AUCs were almost the same. In conclusion, 5'-DFUR AUC correlated with toxicity following oral administration of capecitabine and its analogs in monkeys, mice, and rats, although this relationship is not seen in humans. Capecitabine was less toxic in monkeys than oral 5'-DFUR according to dose (mmol/kg) and 5'-DFUR AUC.

This was conducted to examine the effects of brown seaweed (wakame) on blood pressure and serum biochemical parameters in hypertensive subjects. Of the 37 elderly out-patients with hypertension who started the study, 36 of them completed it. This study was a randomly assigned, case-controlled one. Nineteen patients received a daily dose of 5g of dried wakame powder packed in 12 capsules. Eighteen gender-matched subjects with age difference±2 years, and starting time of participation within±2 weeks, were selected as the control group. Patients visited the clinic every 4 weeks. The observation period was 8 weeks. In the wakame group, the average amount of wakame ingested was 3.3g. The systolic blood pressure (SBP) in this group dropped 13mmHg below the baseline (p<0.01) after 4 weeks, and 8mmHg (p<0.05) after 8 weeks. The diastolic blood pressure (DBP) decreased by 9mmHg (p<0.01) after 4 weeks and by 8mmHg (p<0.05) after 8 weeks. In the control group, no significant changes were seen in either SBP or DBP. However, the differences in reduction in SBP and DBP were significant between the wakame and control groups. Regarding clinical chemistry data, hypercholesterolemia in the wakame group decreased by 8% after 4 weeks. No other abnormal changes were observed in either group. We conclude that wakame has beneficial effects as a supplemental regimen in the treatment of hypertension.

A 28-year-old man with type 1 diabetes mellitus was admitted for shock and coma due to diabetic ketoacidosis. Despite aggressive treatment and management of the patient's underlying clinical issues, the patient remained in a comatose state. Further investigations revealed an excess consumption of psychotropic agents; however, there was no evidence of an insulin overdose. Physicians should be aware that, in patients who are highly dependent upon insulin, an overdose of psychotropic agents can lead to hypoxic-ischemic brain injury.

Conventional, IT system development organizations have selectively utilized the two techniques: plan-driven method in which requirements are defined and baselined in early phase of the project and agile method which is based on iterative development. Recently, the research articles that reported a hybrid approach that uses plan-driven and agile method together have been on the rise. However, few theoretical studies have investigated the contextual conditions that illustrates a better fit for hybrid approach, called effective area. This research is aimed to provide an analysis model of hybrid approach by evaluating project characteristics and iteration development strategy. Our model and numerical simulations present that a hybrid approach should be fit with wider context of project characteristics than the agile method. By investigating the effective area with multiple parameters, this research would contribute to a growing literature of hybrid approach and a methodology for project manager or project management office to choose hybrid approach appropriately.

Split pit in peach (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch) fruit is an internal disorder that can have adverse effects on fruit quality and shelf stability. As it is difficult to distinguish split-pit fruit from normal fruit by appearance, a nondestructive detection method is desirable to determine accurately the timing of split-pit occurrence and remove unwanted fruit from trees. In our recent study, we used an acoustic vibration method for the nondestructive detection of split pit in harvested peach fruit. Here, we demonstrate that this method can be used to detect split pit in unpicked peach fruit. Time-course monitoring of growing fruit revealed that the ratio of the third (f3) to the second (f2) resonant frequency (f3/f2), which is an indicator of split pit in harvested fruit, abruptly increased in unpicked split-pit fruit from early June to early July. In contrast, the f3/f2 values of normal fruit remained low until harvest in late July. The increase in f3/f2 values of split-pit fruit was observed in early June (stage II of fruit growth) and/or from late June to early July (stage III of fruit growth), suggesting that, at least under the experimental conditions in the current study, pit splitting occurred at these two different timings. Split-pit fruit detection rate at harvest increased towards the end of the second split-pit occurrence and split pit could be predicted with high accuracy thereafter. These results collectively suggested that the timing of split-pit occurrence in unpicked peach fruit could be predicted accurately by measuring f3/f2 values and unwanted fruit with split pit could be distinguished from normal fruit on trees. We discuss the possible applications of the nondestructive acoustic vibration method in combination with fruit thinning and the future use of this method in research aiming to develop effective prevention methods or resistant cultivars with reduced split pit.

本研究は、分譲マンションの管理組合活動への参加困難層の負担を軽減しつつ組合の弱体化に対する支援と、建物と居住環境の管理レベルを一定に維持するしくみの検討を目指して、2005年度から取り組んでいる。その一環として、本報では2006年11月に京滋阪奈地区の管理組合(築30年以内)理事長を対象に実施したアンケート調査(有効回収59件、41.3%)とヒアリング事例調査(5件)による組合活動の実態を報告する。 アンケート調査の結果をみると、新築当初からの住民比率は、10年を超えた時点で新規居住者との入れ替えが急速に進むマンションとそうでないものに分かれる。賃貸住宅や空き家・事務所を抱えるマンションも多く、中には欠陥が疑われる工事の発見とその対応など、管理組合がかかえる問題は多様である。その中で、(1)築年数が古いマンションほど理事長は高齢化する傾向にあり、役員の世代交代をどのように進めていくか、(2)危機管理について理事長が居住者の基本的情報を把握していない事例が多く、どのようにリスク管理を進めていくか等が課題とされる。また、聞き取り調査から、(3)組合運営のための情報収集や支援に、専門家やNPO、他のマンションとの交流が大きな役割を果たしており、(4)当初設定された管理費用の見直しを行った事例も多い。マンション管理には経営的視点、技術的視点、危機管理とコミュニティ育成の視点が重要といえる。さらに、これまでの研究成果とあわせて検討し、改めて日本における分譲マンションの今後の課題を整理した。

Background: ortho-Toluidine (OT) was listed as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer in 2012 based on epidemiological observations of workers co-exposed to OT and aromatic amines. From 2014 to 2017, several cases of bladder cancer (BCa) secondary to occupational exposure, primarily to OT, were detected in Japan.Objective: To describe 10 cases of BCa in male Japanese workers exposed primarily to OT at two plants that produce organic dye and pigment intermediates.Methods: Details of the 10 cases were obtained from company records and through a questionnaire and interview. The surrogate level of exposure to each aromatic amine was calculated as the total job-weight/month for each process for each job-year.Results: No quantitative exposure data were available. In most cases the surrogate level of exposure to OT was higher than to other amines. All 10 cases were exposed primarily to OT and co-exposed to para-toluidine, ortho-anisidine, aniline, 2,4-xylidine or ortho-chloroaniline. The age range at diagnosis was 41–71 years (mean 56). The duration of OT exposure was 7–28 years (mean 16.5). Disease latency was 16–28 years (mean 21.9). Eight patients were smokers. The main symptom at diagnosis was hematuria (70%).Conclusions: The characteristics of BCa cases were associated with a high surrogate level of OT exposure and a disease latency of more than 20 years from the initial OT exposure. The main route of OT exposure was likely through the skin. It is necessary to continue health examinations in these target groups.

本論文は、映像メディアで伝えられる従軍慰安婦問題をめぐる言説が視聴者にどのように伝わるかについて、視聴調査のデータに基づき分析を行なったものである。戦後60年を経た現在においても、従軍慰安婦問題は様々な歴史認識が交錯する問題の一つであり、「従軍慰安婦」をめぐっては、いくつかの言説が存在している。本論文では、それらを整理した上で、2001年に「従軍慰安婦」問題を扱ったNHKの番組が、どのような言説の政治の下で改編され問題となったのかを明らかにするとともに、この番組は視聴者の「従軍慰安婦」問題の認識にどのような影響を与えたかについて、番組視聴調査の結果から考察を行なった。

‘Rainbow Red’ kiwifruit have been reported to gradually ripen during low temperature storage and on the vine in the absence of detectable ethylene. This study was conducted to compare the expression of ripening-related genes during storage at different temperatures and on the vine. Fruit at 5°C and 10°C ripened faster to eating quality within four weeks accompanied with increased expression of ripening-related genes: AcACO3, AcXET2, AcEXP1, AcPG, AcPMEi, AcSUS, AcβAMY1, AcβAMY2, AcGA2ox2, AcNAC3, AcNAC4, and AcMADS2. Fruit at 15°C required a longer period of eight weeks to attain eating quality in concurrence with delayed accumulation of the ripening-related genes. Fruit at 22°C ripened at the slowest rate and did not attain eating quality even after eight weeks, with very minimal accumulation of ripening-related genes. On-vine ripening occurred slowly at the early stages when the average field temperature was ~20°C, but the rate increased as the temperature dropped to ≤15°C accompanied by increased expression of ripening-related genes. These results indicate that both ripening on-vine and during low temperature storage are modulated by low temperature independent of ethylene.

The main contribution of this paper is to present an implementation that performs the exhaustive search to verify the Collatz conjecture using a GPU. Consider the following operation on an arbitrary positive number: if the number is even, divide it by two, and if the number is odd, triple it and add one. The Collatz conjecture asserts that, starting from any positive number m, repeated iteration of the operations eventually produces the value 1. We have implemented it on NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN X and evaluated the performance. The experimental results show that, our GPU implementation can verify 1.31×1012 64-bit numbers per second. While the sequential CPU implementation on Intel Core i7-4790 can verify 5.25×109 64-bit numbers per second. Thus, our implementation on the GPU attains a speed-up factor of 249 over the sequential CPU implementation. Additionally, we accelerated the computation of counting the number of the above operations until a number reaches 1, called delay that is one of the mathematical interests for the Collatz conjecture by the GPU. Using a similar idea, we achieved a speed-up factor of 73.

Vitamin B12 contents of green (0046-0263 and 0, 125-0535μg/ 100g dry weight), blue (0.068-0.081 and 0.525-0.528μg/100g dry weight), red (0.061 and 0.663μg/100g dry weight), and black (0.104-0.859 and 0.305-1.20μg/100g dry weight) tea leaves were obtained by intrinsic factor-chemiluminescence and microbiological methods, respectively. Although vitamin Bit was found in all tea leaves tested by both assay methods, the higher values by the microbiological method were not due to occurrence of both deoxyribosides and deoxynucleotides (known as an alkali-resistant factor), but may have been due to that of inactive corrinoid compounds for mammals in the tea leaves.
