The anti-slide packing is a packing of a number of three dimensional pieces of same size into a larger box such that none of them can slide in any direction. In this paper, we consider the problem of how to find a sparsest anti-slide packing. We give an IP formulation of this problem, and obtain the solutions for some small cases by using an IP solver. In addition, we give the upper and lower bounds on the ratio of the volume occupied by the pieces when the size of a box approaches infinity. For the case of piece size 2 × 2 × 1, we show that a sparsest anti-slide packing occupies at least 28.8% and at most 66.7% of the total volume.

In plant cells, the trans-Golgi network (TGN) is known to act as the early endocytic compartment, whereas RAB5-localizing multivesicular endosomes (MVEs) act as the later compartment. Land plants and certain green algal species possess plant-unique RAB5 homologs (ARA6/RABF1 in Arabidopsis thaliana) in addition to the orthologs of animal RAB5 (RHA1/RABF2a and ARA7/RABF2b in A. thaliana), and these two RAB5 members reside in substantially overlapping but different subpopulations of MVEs. Several studies indicate that the TGN and MVEs are closely related; however, the distribution of the two RAB5 groups in relation to the TGN remains elusive. Here, we quantitatively showed that ARA6 and ARA7 are closely associated with the TGN, and the subpopulation of ARA6 and ARA7 overlaps with the TGN in the root epidermal cells of A. thaliana.

研究動向自己分化とは,関係性の中で個を維持し,個人の中で感情過程と知的過程の調和を保つ能力を指す。近年の研究では,自己分化と心理的適応,そして対人関係との関連が示唆されている。自己分化を促進させる方法として,多世代派家族療法とRelationship Enhancement が挙げられる。これらの介入で獲得が目指されている能力は,体験の観察と気づきという点において共通していると考えられる。さらに,これらの能力は,瞑想によって高められると考えられる。瞑想とは,心的過程を意図的に制御するために注意と気づきの訓練に焦点を当てた自己制御の訓練である。今後,自己分化が瞑想に及ぼす影響,自己分化と瞑想の関連性を検討していくことが望まれる。

A histopathological study was performed to examine the influence of propagermanium and germanium dioxide (GeO2) on chemically induced renal lesions in rats. Animals were treated with adriamycin or mercuric chloride to induce glomerular or proximal tubular damage, and then given drinking water containing propagermanium (480 or 2, 400 ppm solution) or GeO2 (300 or 1, 500 ppm solution: equivalent to propagermanium in terms of germanium contents). The distal tubular epithelium after 8 weeks dosage with the 1, 500 ppm solution of GeO2 was characterized by vacuolization and deposits of PAS-positive material not only in adriamycin-treated rats, but also in normal rats. In contrast, propagermanium administration was not associated with any alteration in the changes induced by adriamycin or mercuric chloride. We previously clarified that propagermanium had no biochemical influence on the renal function of these renal injured rats. The histological demonstration that this compound does not exert renal toxicity, even when given at a high dosage to renal injured rats, further indicates that it would not exacerbate renal dysfunction already present. This confirms that propagermanium may be a safe compound for use in individuals with compromised kidneys.

Nineteen cases of histiocytic sarcomas in Pembroke Welsh Corgi were examined histopathologically. Focal or multiple masses were detected in the lung or in regional lymph nodes, or in both lung and nodes. All neoplastic lesions had common histological features characterized by the proliferation of pleomorphic histiocytic cells combined with various inflammatory cells. Most of the pleomorphic neoplastic cells were immunopositive for human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DR and Iba-1. The median survival time for all dogs was 133 days. In the present study, several prognostic factors, such as gender, age, single or multiple lesions, lymph node involvement at the time of diagnosis, surgical resection status and additional chemotherapy, were examined, although none of these factors approached statistical significance. Histiocytic sarcoma must be considered in the differential diagnosis of dogs with pulmonary masses, especially in the canine breed.

A 17-year-old teen was hospitalized with bilateral pneumothorax. After the bilateral lungs were expanded using catheter tubes, he fully recovered and he was discharged from our hospital. He had a history of colon perforation. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) was suspected due to the combination of colon perforation and pneumothorax, and EDS type IV was confirmed after a genetic study identified a c.1511g>a mutation in the COL3A1 gene. This is the first report of bilateral pneumothorax caused by EDS type IV. Clinicians should consider EDS type IV in the differential diagnosis for bilateral pneumothorax in conjunction with distinct previous histories and radiological findings.

In this letter we present an imperceptible and robust watermarking algorithm that uses a cryptographic hash function in the authentication application of digital medical imaging. In the proposed scheme we combine discrete Fourier transform (DFT) and local image masking to detect the watermark after a geometrical distortion and improve its imperceptibility. The image quality is measured by metrics currently used in digital image processing, such as VSNR, SSIM and PSNR.

グローバル社会が到来し外国語教育の重要性が増していくにつれ、学習する外国語の背後にある外国の思想や地域文化、習慣もともに学習する必要性があることが認識され、非言語【ノンバーバル】コミュニケーションの重要性が指摘されている。本稿では非言語【ノンバーバル】コミュニケーションと周辺言語【パラランゲージ】について、研究成果を追いその構成要素を調べた。加えて、発話を文字化したばあいに周辺言語【パラランゲージ】がどのような表現になるのかを探るために、周辺言語【パラランゲージ】を表現する語彙を抽出した。In the wake of the coming of the globalizing world and the increasing importance on foreign language education, it is generally recognized that there is a great necessity for learners to learn and to understand the thinking, the regional local culture and social daily customs which are embedded in any foreign language. In this regard, furthermore, it is also pointed out that one should not neglect the importance of the non-verbal communication. This article aims to achieve two purposes : firstly, it attempts to investigate the components of nonverbal communication ; secondly, it endeavors to trace the research results of paralanguage and its relationship with nonverbal communication. In addition, the article is also attempted to examine the case that when spoken dialogue (hatsuwa) is expressed or demonstrated by words (mojika), what kind of paralanguage expressions would be used and what can be observed? To achieve this, I extracted the vocabulary (glossary) which are used to express paralanguage in the realm of nonverbal communication.

To investigate the mechanism of yield increase by elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) and fogging in Japanese tomato cultivars (Solanum lycopersicum), total above-ground dry matter (TDM), fraction of dry matter distribution to fruit (FDF), and photosynthetic characteristics were measured in 3 Japanese cultivars grown in elevated CO2 with fogging and ambient CO2 without fogging. Fresh fruit yield and TDM were improved by the elevated CO2 and fogging in the 3 Japanese cultivars. Light use efficiency (LUE) was also increased by the elevated CO2 and fogging. No significant decrease in FDF was observed by the elevated CO2 and fogging in 2 Japanese cultivars, ‘Asabiyori 10’ and ‘Junkei Aichi Fast’. Thus, the increase in TDM by higher LUE contributed directly to the yield increase in these 2 cultivars. However, FDF in ‘Momotaro York’ was decreased significantly by the elevated CO2 and fogging. Thereby, the yield increase by the elevated CO2 and fogging was diminished in ‘Momotaro York’ in spite of the increase in TDM. The number of trusses having immature fruit in ‘Momotaro York’ under elevated CO2 and fogging was significantly higher than those of the others, although no increase in the number of trusses having immature fruit was observed in the other 2 cultivars. Although vegetative growth characteristics such as leaf area, LAI, and fresh and dry weights of leaves and stem were increased by the elevated CO2 and fogging, no negative effects such as a change in light-extinction coefficient and a decrease in maximum photosynthetic rate were observed. The elevated CO2 and fogging increased the number of harvested fruit but decreased weight per fruit, namely, fruit size, in the 3 cultivars.

The anti-HIV-1 activity of aromatic herbs in Labiatae was evaluated in vitro. Forty five extract from among 51 samples obtained from 46 herb species showed significant inhibitory effects against HIV-1 induced cytopathogenicity in MT-4 cells. In particular, the aqueous extracts of Melissa officinalis, a family of Mentha×piperita "grapefruit mint", Mentha×piperita var. crispa, Ocimum basilicum cv "cinnamon", Perilla frutescens var. crispa f.viridis, Prunella vulgaris subsp. asiatica and Satureja montana showed potent anti-HIV-1 activity (with an ED of 16μg/ml). The active components in the extract samples were found to be water-solubel polar substances, not nonpolar compounds such as essential oils. In addition, these aqueous extracts inhibited giant cell formation in co-culture of Molt-4 cels with and without HIV-1 infection and showed inhibitory activity against HIV-1 reverse transcriptase.

We investigated the in vitro differentiation of canine bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) into voltage- and glutamate-responsive neuron-like cells. BMSCs were obtained from the bone marrow of healthy beagle dogs. Canine BMSCs were incubated with the basal medium for neurons containing recombinant human basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF; 100 ng/ml). The viability of the bFGF-treated cells was assessed by a trypan blue exclusion assay, and the morphology was monitored. Real-time RT-PCR was performed to evaluate mRNA expression of neuronal, neural stem cell and glial markers. Western blotting and immunocytochemical analysis for the neuronal markers were performed to evaluate the protein expression and localization. The Ca2+ mobilization of the cells was evaluated using the Ca2+ indicator Fluo3 to monitor Ca2+ influx. To investigate the mechanism of bFGF-induced neuronal differentiation, the fibroblast growth factor receptor inhibitor, the phosphoinositide 3-kinase inhibitor or the Akt inhibitor was tested. The bFGF treatment resulted in the maintenance of the viability of canine BMSCs for 10 days, in the expression of neuronal marker mRNAs and proteins and in the manifestation of neuron-like morphology. Furthermore, in the bFGF-treated BMSCs, a high concentration of KCl and L-glutamate induced an increase in intracellular Ca2+ levels. Each inhibitor significantly attenuated the bFGF-induced increase in neuronal marker mRNA expression. These results suggest that bFGF contributes to the differentiation of canine BMSCs into voltage- and glutamate-responsive neuron-like cells and may lead to the development of new cell-based treatments for neuronal diseases.

To improve the yield of a Japanese tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) cultivar and determine how fruit yield changes as a result of grafting, we investigated the effects of a Dutch rootstock [‘Maxifort’ (S. lycopersicum × S. habrochaites): Mx] on the dry matter (DM) production and fruit yield of Dutch and Japanese cultivars. The Japanese cultivar (‘Momotaro York’: My) grafted onto Mx (My/Mx: scion/rootstock) had significantly higher fresh and dry weights of fruits per unit area than My/My. Fruit fresh weight yield per unit area was highly correlated with fruit dry weight (DW) yield (r = 0.96–0.97, P < 0.001), and DW yield was significantly correlated with total aboveground DM (r = 0.71–0.96, P < 0.001) and with DM allocation to the fruits (r = 0.52–0.75, P < 0.01). Total aboveground DM (TDM) was significantly and highly correlated with light-use efficiency (r = 0.98, P < 0.001). However, there was no significant correlation between light-use efficiency and the maximum photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, or the light-extinction coefficient. Although stomatal conductance significantly (P < 0.05) differed between the rootstocks at 57 and 119 days after transplanting (DAT), there was no significant difference in the maximum photosynthetic rate between the scion/rootstock combinations at 57 and 119 DAT. These results indicated that the fruit yield of My could be improved by grafting onto Mx, and that the increases in yield and TDM were mainly determined by the increase in light-use efficiency.

Type III secretion system (T3SS) effector protein is a part of bacterial secretion systems. T3SS exists in the pathogenic and symbiotic bacteria. How the T3SS effector proteins in these two classes differ from each other should be interesting. In this paper, we successfully discriminated T3SS effector proteins between plant pathogenic, animal pathogenic and plant symbiotic bacteria based on feature vectors inferred computationally by Yahara et al. only from amino acid sequences. This suggests that these three classes of bacteria employ distinct T3SS effector proteins. We also hypothesized that the feature vector proposed by Yahara et al. represents protein structure, possibly protein folds defined in Structural Classification of Proteins (SCOP) database.

A five-year-old castrated Japanese domestic cat was presented with persistent vomiting. Ultrasound examinations revealed many masses only in the liver and the fine needle aspiration was performed. Cytologically, polygonal or oval shaped tumor cells forming rosette and cord-like patterns were demonstrated and then the hepatic lesions were diagnosed as neuroendocrine carcinoma tentatively. The cat was died one month after admission and was necropsied. Histopathologically, the tumor cells of the hepatic mass were arranged in typical rosette and cord-like structures. They were considerably uniform in size with hyperchromatic round nuclei and eosinophilic cytoplasm. Most of tumor cells were immunopositive for chromogranin A and some were positive for gastrin. The findings indicate the possibility that the present case was a gastrin-producing neuroendocrine carcinoma.

The high-luminance blue emitting electroluminescent (EL) devices which have been satisfied with the requirement for full color displays were obtained. BaAl_2S_4:Eu thin-film EL devices as the new blue emitting EL phosphor was prepared by the two targets pulse-electron-beam evaporation. The maximum luminance level was 65 cd/m^2 under the 50 Hz-pulse voltage. The EL spectrum had a blue emission band with a peak around 475 nm due to the 5d-4f transition for Eu^<2+> ion. The Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) color coordinates of BaAl_2S_4:Eu EL device were x=0.12 and y=0.10.
