The brassinosteroid (BR) phytohormone is an important regulator of plant growth. To identify novel transcription factors that regulate BR responses, we screened chimeric repressor gene silencing technology (CRES-T) plants, in which transcription factors were converted into chimeric repressors by the fusion of SRDX plant-specific repression domain, with brassinazole (Brz), an inhibitor of BR biosynthesis. We identified that a line that expressed the chimeric repressor for zinc finger homeobox transcription factor, BRASSINOSTEORID-RELATED-HOMEOBOX-2 (BHB2-sx), exhibited Brz-hypersensitive phenotype with shorter hypocotyl under dark, dwarf and round and dark green leaves similar to BR-deficient phenotype. Similar to BHB2-sx plants, bhb2 knockout mutant also exhibited Brz hypersensitive phenotype. In contrast, ectopic expression of BHB2 (BHB2-ox) showed hypocotyl elongation phenotype (BR excessive), showing decrease to Brz sensitivity. The expression of the DWF4 and CPD BR biosynthesis genes was repressed in BHB2-sx plants, whereas it was enhanced in BHB2-ox plants. The BR deficient-like phenotype of BHB2-sx plants was partially restored by treatment with brassinolide (BL), indicating that the BR deficient phenotype of BHB2-sx plant may be due to suppression of BR biosynthesis. Our results indicate that BHB2 is a positive regulator of BR response may be due to the promotion of BR biosynthesis genes.

Persistent organic chemicals are non-biodegradable in nature and have a tendency to bioaccumulate in the top organisms of the food chain. We measured persistent organic chemicals, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE), and benzotriazole-based ultraviolet stabilizers (UV-BTs), in the serum of captive king penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) using gas chromatography with an electron capture detector and mass spectrometry to examine their age-related accumulation. PCBs, DDE, UV-PS, and UV-9 were detected in the blood of captive king penguins, and the concentrations of total PCBs, DDE, and UV-9 were positively correlated with age. These results suggest that there is a similar age-related accumulation of persistent organic chemicals in marine birds in the wild, and that older individuals are at a higher risk of contamination.

The aim of this study was to determine the proportion of near-miss dispensing errors in hospital pharmacies in Japan. A prospective multi-center observational study was conducted between December 2018 and March 2019. The primary objective was to determine the proportion of near-miss dispensing errors in hospital pharmacy departments. The secondary objective was to determine the predictive factors for near-miss dispensing errors using multiple logistic regression analysis. The study was approved by the ethical committee at The Institute of Medical Sciences, University of Tokyo, Japan. A multi-center prospective observational study was conducted in 20 hospitals comprising 8862 beds. Across the 20 hospitals, we assessed data from 553 pharmacists and 53039 prescriptions. A near-miss dispensing error proportion of 0.87% (n = 461) was observed in the study. We found predictive factors for dispensing errors in day-time shifts: a higher number of drugs in a prescription, higher number of quantified drugs, such as liquid or powder formula, in a prescription, and higher number of topical agents in a prescription; but we did not observe for career experience level for clinical pharmacists. For night-time and weekend shifts, we observed a negative correlation of near-miss dispensing errors with clinical pharmacist experience level. We found an overall incidence of near-miss dispensing errors of 0.87%. Predictive factors for errors in night-time and weekend shifts was inexperienced pharmacists. We recommended that pharmacy managers should consider education or improved work flow to avoid near-miss dispensing errors by younger pharmacists, especially those working night or weekend shifts.

We have found corundum in direct contact with quartz and biotite and as inclusions in garnet in the pelitic gneisses of northern Austkampane in the Northeastern (NE) Terrane of the Sør Rondane Mountains (SRM), East Antarctica. Our samples, which include corundum–bearing gneisses, show petrographic features such as staurolite inclusions in garnet, compositional zoning of orthoamphibole with Al decreasing toward the rims, and late–stage cordierite formation, and these features are characteristic of a clockwise P–T trajectory. The observations are consistent with the proposed regional clockwise P–T evolution of the NE Terrane in the SRM. The corundum and other inclusions observed in the garnet porphyroblasts are interpreted to have formed owing to either staurolite breakdown or metastable crystallization relative to kyanite prior to the peak metamorphism. The close association of biotite and quartz surrounding corundum inclusions suggests fluid– or melt–related processes. These petrographic features imply that the corundum and quartz (rarely observed in high–grade metamorphic rocks) formed as a result of metastable crystallization during the prograde stage of the clockwise P–T evolution of a continental collision zone.

We examined the effect of oral intake of pure glucosylceramide derived from konjac extract on skin barrier function evaluated by transepidermal water loss (TEWL) in hairless mice with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-induced skin roughness. The difference of TEWL between SDS-treated site and untreated sites in the pure glucosylceramide-fed group was significantly lower than that in control group on day 14 of ingestion. We investigated interleukin-1α (IL-1α) production in the hairless mouse skin, and it was significantly lower in the glucosylceramide-fed group than that of control animals. This reduced IL-1α production should contribute to improvement of skin barrier function. To investigate the effect of oral intake of glucosylceramide in human, we conducted a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study including 100 healthy subjects whose TEWL in cheek was relatively high. As a result, cheek TEWL was significantly lower in the test product group as compared with the control group in weeks 8 and 12 of ingestion (p=0.023 and p=0.002 respectively).

The ingestion of raw seafood infected with nematode larvae of the Anisakidae family can lead to gastric anisakiasis. The majority of the infections involve a single larva, however, there have been instances of multiple infection. The incidence rate and the characteristics of multiple infection by Anisakis remain poorly understood. We herein present a case of parasitization by multiple Anisakis larvae and describe 14 cases of multiple parasitization representing the largest reported case series to date. Endoscopists should therefore be aware of the potential for multiple infection by Anisakis and the need for a thorough inspection of all parts of the stomach when encountering such cases.

Mukaku Kishu–type seedlessness in citrus (Citrus L.) is characterized by the formation of small and edible seeds (type A seeds) with an immature seed coat and arrest of embryo development at an early stage. We investigated the effect of high temperature on embryo and seed development in the Mukaku Kishu–type seedless cultivar ‘Southern Yellow’ over a period of four years. In outdoor-grown trees, embryos at the zygote and proembryo stages were observed at 10 weeks after pollination (WAP), and embryo development was largely arrested at 18 WAP; as a result, only type A seeds formed. In glasshouse-grown trees, globular-stage embryos were observed at 10 WAP, and globular- to cotyledon-stage embryos developed by 18 WAP. The day temperature in the glasshouse was higher than outdoors. Seeds developed in the fruit of trees transferred into a glasshouse at 0–2, 0–4, or 2–4 WAP, but not 4–8 WAP. High temperature before flowering had no effect on seed development. We conclude that high temperature at 0–4 WAP releases the arrest of embryo development after 10 WAP in ‘Southern Yellow’.

This paper presents the development of a 48V integrated starter generator (ISG) for mild hybrid vehicles. The motor needs to satisfy power and torque performances requirements under the 48V system voltage as well as the passenger vehicle's specific requirements, such as acoustic noise and layout space. Several processes have been explored to obtain a 48V ISG such as the pole number selection process, the electromagnetic design approach for reducing acoustic noise, and a novel position sensor topology. By using the developed technologies, a 48V ISG motor is designed, built, and tested. Furthermore, the developed motor is demonstrated to achieve 180Nm, 15kW exceeding the 95% motor efficiency with acoustic noise reduction design and thin axial motor length.

Aims: This prospective observational study, which utilized repeated annual measurements performed over a 9-year period, applied mixed model analyses to examine age-related differences in longitudinal associations between alcohol intake and arterial stiffness, pressure wave reflection, and inflammation. Methods: In 4016 middle-aged (43±9 years) healthy Japanese male employees, alcohol intake, brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), radial augmentation index (rAI), and serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were measured annually during a 9-year study period. Results: The estimated marginal mean baPWV (non-drinkers=1306 cm/s, mild–moderate drinkers=1311 cm/s, and heavy drinkers=1337 cm/s, P<0.01) and that of rAI showed significant stepped increases in an alcohol dose-dependent manner in the entire cohort, but an increase in rAI was not observed in subjects aged ≥ 50 years. The estimated slope of the annual increase in baPWV, but not rAI, was higher for heavy drinkers than for non-drinkers (slope difference, 1.84; P<0.05), especially for subjects aged <50 years (slope difference, 2.84; P<0.05). Conclusion: In middle-aged male Japanese employees, alcohol intake may attenuate inflammatory activity. While alcohol intake may exacerbate the progression of arterial stiffening in a dose-dependent manner without mediating inflammation, especially in subjects under 50 years of age, it may promote pressure wave reflection abnormalities with aging at earlier ages without further exacerbation at older ages.

This study examines how the performance of startups during the time period up to their initial public offering (IPO) is affected by the macro environment, a topic that has not been given much consideration to date. Taking the end of 2012 (the beginning of Abenomics), when Japan’s economic environment shifted to a hot market, as the transition point, we analyzed companies that did IPOs in terms of such variables as the target market, the attributes of the companies in the sample (type of entrepreneurship), and the date of their actual establishment. We found that for those companies operating in an economically favorable environment, the average time period from startup to IPO was relatively long. This could be because an economically favorable environment and improved business conditions spurred startups that had been implementing a wait-and-see attitude. We have some reservations about using “time to IPO” naively as a performance indicator, and caution should be exercised when using it.

In language understanding for dialog systems, slot filling is a fundamental task usually formulated as a sequence labeling problem and solved using discriminative models such as conditional random fields and neural networks. One of the weak points of the discriminative approach is in the robustness against incomplete annotations, which are often generated in practice when we attempt to build large-scale training data. For making the slot filling algorithm more robust against the incompleteness of annotation, this paper leverages an overlooked property of slot filling tasks: Non-slot parts of utterance follow a specific pattern depending on the user’s intent. To reflect this idea, we propose a nonparametric Bayesian model that induces the grammatical role of the non-slot parts using a segmentation-based formulation of slot filling tasks. The proposed method can naturally deal with training data that includes incomplete annotations as a partially supervised grammar induction problem. The experimental result demonstrates that the proposed method estimates the slot information more accurately in a situation that the training data includes incomplete annotations in comparison to the BiLSTM-CRF and HMM.We also show that the proposed model has an advantage in the interpretability of the result of training and prediction by visualizing the parameters and the estimated labeled segmentations with a state transition diagram.

Fetal brain injury is often related to prenatal inflammation; however, there is a lack of effective therapy. Recently, molecular hydrogen (H2), a specific antioxidant to hydroxyl radical and peroxynitrite, has been reported to have anti-inflammatory properties. The aim of this study was to investigate whether maternal H2 administration could protect the fetal brain against inflammation. Pregnant C3H/HeN mice received an intraperitoneal injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on gestational day 15.5 and were provided with H2 water for 24 h prior to LPS injection. Pup brain samples were collected on gestational day 16.5, and the levels of apoptosis and oxidative damage were evaluated using immunohistochemistry. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels were examined using real-time PCR. The levels of apoptosis and oxidative damage, as well as the levels of IL-6 mRNA, increased significantly when the mother was injected with LPS than that in the control group. However, these levels were significantly reduced when H2 was administered prior to the LPS-injection. Our results suggest that LPS-induced apoptosis, oxidative damage and inflammation in the fetal brain were ameliorated by maternal H2 administration. Antenatal H2 administration might protect the premature brain against maternal inflammation.

Objective Peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) are widely used in patients with hematologic malignancies. However, the risks of PICC-related complications during chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) are not fully understood. Methods We conducted a retrospective review of 128 adult patients with AML who received induction therapy by way of PICC insertion between 2012 and 2019. Results The median duration of PICC insertion was 30 days. The incidence rate of catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) was 2.4% at 30 days, and women were more likely to suffer from CRBSI than men. Local reactions at the insertion site were observed in 56 patients; however, these events did not predict CRBSI. The incidence rates of catheter-related thrombosis (CRT) were 1.6% at 30 days. Obesity put patients at an increased risk for CRT. Unexpected PICC removal occurred in 59 patients, and women were at a higher risk of catheter removal than men. Conclusion Low PICC-related complication rates, possibly associated with high rates of catheter removal, were observed during intensive chemotherapy for AML. Women and obese patients require careful monitoring of their PICC. Procedures to achieve appropriate PICC removal without increasing the complication rate need to be considered.

The main contribution of this paper is to present a work-optimal parallel algorithm for LZW decompression and to implement it in a CUDA-enabled GPU. Since sequential LZW decompression creates a dictionary table by reading codes in a compressed file one by one, it is not easy to parallelize it. We first present a work-optimal parallel LZW decompression algorithm on the CREW-PRAM (Concurrent-Read Exclusive-Write Parallel Random Access Machine), which is a standard theoretical parallel computing model with a shared memory. We then go on to present an efficient implementation of this parallel algorithm on a GPU. The experimental results show that our GPU implementation performs LZW decompression in 1.15 milliseconds for a gray scale TIFF image with 4096×3072 pixels stored in the global memory of GeForce GTX 980. On the other hand, sequential LZW decompression for the same image stored in the main memory of Intel Core i7 CPU takes 50.1 milliseconds. Thus, our parallel LZW decompression on the global memory of the GPU is 43.6 times faster than a sequential LZW decompression on the main memory of the CPU for this image. To show the applicability of our GPU implementation for LZW decompression, we evaluated the SSD-GPU data loading time for three scenarios. The experimental results show that the scenario using our LZW decompression on the GPU is faster than the others.

Recently, metabolomics has grown rapidly in the fields of food and agriculture. Complex physiological changes after harvest prompted the development of a new metabolomic analytical method offering more profound insight into these changes. This review presents the feasibility of a metabolomics approach to elucidate physiological changes during ripening, senescence, and disorders. Additionally, we introduce metabolomics for the authentication of agricultural products. Confirmation of species, varieties, and geographical origin via metabolomics can be useful to tackle adulteration and certify quality.

高等学校共通教科情報科は,2025 年度大学入学共通テストから出題されることが大学入試センターと文部科学省から発表されている.しかし,その検討素材としては,大学入試センターが 2020 年に示した試作問題(検討用イメージ)と 2021 年に公開したサンプル問題しかない.そこで,2022 年度から高等学校で始まる「情報Ⅰ」の授業内容の構築に資するべく,1997 年度大学入試センター試験から出題されている「情報関係基礎」の問題を分類し,高等学校共通教科情報科との対応を試みた.
