The authors recognized that in the field of education, service design is a methodology to create new value by designing not only student learning but also a mechanism that enables students’ continuous learning. In this study, we conducted a one-day Pattern Language Workshop as a service design approach using the "Pattern Language for Learning Architecture" created in advance by teachers as an interface between "new students" and "new learning" in architectural design courses at two technical colleges. The pre- and post-workshop questionnaire surveys revealed that the Pattern Language Workshop was effective in reducing new students' anxiety about "participation" in learning and their anxiety about "learning" arising from being unable to see the entire picture of learning. In addition, a quantitative text analysis of the free response questions in the questionnaires revealed that new students, who had dreams of working in the field of architecture in the future but were anxious about learning at the time of their enrollment before the workshop, had their levels of "anxiety about learning" reduced after experiencing the workshop in a fun way. It became clear that the Pattern Language Workshop as a service design method, as a map, can provide support for students.

In UX designing, we sometimes propose a new concept product or service, focusing on user experience value. In this case, it is desirable to conduct concept evaluation at an early stage to confirm the direction of development. However, the method to reasonably conduct a concept test at a stage when the product or service is not concrete enough remains unclear. In this study, we analyzed the effect of results from the differences in the expressions of the following 3 concept sentences: (A) expression showing only the experience value; (B) expression with usage scene in addition to the experience value; and (C) expression with function in addition to the experience value. As a result, we found that A could reasonably evaluate “the degree of matching the needs” and “novelty”, and that C could reasonably evaluate “sympathy”. In this study, therefore, we suggest a two-stage concept test method in which we first present only the experience value to evaluate the degree of matching the needs and then present the usage scene to evaluate sympathy.

Experimental tasks depicting a bullying scene are being studied to elucidate the causes of bullying and to verify methods for resolving bullying. Bullying involves not only victims, bullies, reinforcers, who are complicit in the bullying, and defenders, who mediate the bullying, but also bystanders, who ignore the bullying. Bystanders comprise the largest group involved in bullying and can play an important role in resolving bullying. However, in previous experimental tasks depicting a bullying scene, participants could not perceive bystanders’ behavior as different from the behaviors of the victim or bully. The present study aimed to contribute to the development of solutions to bullying by creating experimental tasks, including a measurable behavior representing bystanders. In this research, we introduced a new option of behavior representing bystanders in a “catch-ball task” that can express the reinforcing and defending behavior in a bullying scene. Results of our questionnaire survey showed that the newly implemented behavior representing bystanders was perceived as bystander’s behavior by participants. Moreover, according to the results of another questionnaire survey, the improved experimental tasks with one bystander were perceived to be closer to a bullying scene compared with previous catch-ball tasks.

Nowadays, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) makes rapid progress in our community life and healthcare support system. Our objective was to explore the effect of tele-rehabilitation on memory impairment after traumatic brain injury. Studies about tele-rehabilitation on memory in adults with traumatic brain injury were reviewed. Four database searches were conducted: MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, and PsycINFO. Of the 523 studies identified in the search, 8 studies (including 2 RCTs) met the inclusion criteria, which involved 207 participants. There were 12 kinds of remote intervention: television assisted controlled prompting, Google Calendar, spaced retrieval training as errorless learning, and so on. A common evaluation index; Community Integration Questionnaire (CIQ) was conducted in two studies. Results from several studies indicated that remote interventions on memory impairment improve the proportion of prospective intentions completed in the patients’ daily life. Further research and meta-analysis are needed based on RCTs.

A concept of “Benefit of Inconvenience (BoI)” has recently attracted much attention as a novel design paradigm, and it has gained sympathy from a lot of people who question the excessive pursuit of conveniences in modern society. However, some of such sympathy is based on, for example, shallow nostalgic ideas that excessively beautify the past. In order to avoid such misunderstandings and misusing, some attempts to (re)define the concept of BoI in a clear and easy-to-understand manner have been made. However, even these (re)definitions still cannot eliminate undesirable misunderstandings and misusing of BoI concept. This paper clarifies causes of such problems of the former definitions and proposes a new definition of BoI that can solve the problems.

This study addresses information support for hearing-impaired people who attend theatrical performances. In present Japan, there are few theater that employ programs providing captions for hearing-impaired persons. The few programs that provide captions only show a dialogue and sound (musical note icons). We propose implement, and evaluate a caption presentation method for hearing impaired people, which includes support for dialogues, sound effects, and audience responses.

This paper proposes a new visualization method for fluctuating gazing points using future lines to assist in following subjects' gazing points. We have conducted experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of this method. From the results of the experiments, the time lag following gazing points was shortened by the method. In addition, surveys for the gazing points' followers were conducted, and results showed that future lines were considered to positively impact their tasks related to following gazing points. These results revealed that the proposed method of adding the future lines contributes to the improvement of gazing points' followability.

Our proposed system rapoptosis is a novel proposal for the sustainable value of artifacts. It aims to enable unused things to autonomously determine their own existence value, bid farewell to their owners, and be revalued by new or original users. In this paper, through the questionnaire survey, we define the existence value includes not only measurable extrinsic existence value but also intrinsic existence value such as memories and attachments. In addition, through the workshop, we investigate the appropriate form of farewell and various farewell messages, and summarize the design guidelines for the autonomous farewell of artifacts for revaluing of itself.

The virtual keyboard in the VR space is characterized by the user can place the keyboard at any position and angle in the air. The user’s posture changes as the position and angle of the virtual keyboard change. We conducted an experiment to investigate the effects of the position and angle of the virtual keyboard on text entry. We found that the position of the virtual keyboard affected the workload by analyzing the experimental data for each participant in the experiment. In this paper, we analyzed the experimental data for each entry phrase. The results show that the entry speed and usability may be improved by tilting the keyboard toward the back from the user’s point of view. Furthermore, since the fatigue of the arms was larger than the fatigue of the neck, the fatigue could be minimized by designing VR applications so as to place the user’s fingers at a lower position than the user’s eye level.

During classroom-type lectures, some students feel difficulty in asking questions, although it is considered to improve the lecture quality and students’ understanding. We propose a system called Robot-Assisted Questioning System (RAQS) that can promote teacher-student communication in the lecture. It allows students to post questions and opinions on an online messaging interface. The messages were sent to a robot to be posed to the teacher, with or without the voting procedure. In this paper, we report a case study of the field experiment in a lecture which was assisted by RAQS. Students found RAQS efficient and useful for improving their communication with the teacher. For the practical use, the results suggest a future improvement of the system to add the function for controlling the number of robot utterance to avoid interference with the teaching process.

“Nudge theory,” an approach to influence people’s decision making, channels people’s behavior by designing environmental cues. We have been studying driving agents that encourage drivers to drive safely and make better behavioral choices for gently driving. Therefore, we attempted to apply a type of Nudge theory called default effect to driving agents. An example of the default effect is an instance wherein people need to make decisions immediately. They are more likely to follow other people’s opinions instead of considering the optimal choice. In this paper, we discuss the research outline of NAMIDA0, a multi-party interaction driving agent, and its application based on the Nudge theory.

Although many chatbot applications have been proposed to support mental health care, the effective interaction design for chatbots to assist positive thinking for problem-solving without relying on the content of individual consultation is not clear. In this paper, we developed a chatbot application that can perform conversation tasks based on the Miracle Question, a method of the solution-focused approach. Then we validated that solution-focused interactive task on chatbot helps improve well-being index and active behavior. As a result, the results did not confirm that the proposed conversation task significantly improved the scores on each scale. However, when compared to existing tasks for behavior activation support, the proposed task tended to have a positive effect on improving well-being scores. Our finding has implications for the methodology and difficulties in supporting personal problem-solving based on minimal design.

We carried out experiments to investigate the relationship between display resolution and physiological and psychological state during the viewing of 4K and 2K content on a 65-inch 4K TV as a comparison between age groups. During viewing tests of 4K scenic content by participants in their 20s and 50s, psychological evaluation scores and NIRS, an index of nervous system activity, were significantly higher during 4K scenic content viewing than for 2K viewing. However, the effect of the display resolution for content comprising video images of fine objects such as food, jewels, watches, glass and fur, was limited compared to that for scenic content between age groups. Our results suggest that content viewing at 4K tends to cause psychological elation and a surge in brain activity, although the effects varied somewhat according to content, and these effects of display resolution on physiological and psychological state were found regardless of age groups.

In face-to-face communication, it is often observed that the body movements of a listener change almost simultaneously with changes in voice patterns of the speaker. This is referred to as 'entrainment'. The present study examined the relationship between the degree of teacher-student entrainment and students' interest in the lecture. Four university professors gave 60-minute lectures. The body movements of the students were recorded using a video camera located in the front of the lecture room and the voices of the professors were recorded using a microphone. After each lecture, the students were asked to rate their interest in the topic of the lecture. We used a computer-based video analysis to measure the intensity of students' body movements, and examined the temporal relationship between body movements and the intensity of the teacher's voice, by a moving correlation analysis. These coefficients can be regarded as the entrainment levels. In all lectures, there were positive and significant relationships between the level of entrainment and students' interest. These results indicate that temporal changes in the level of entrainment can be used as an indicator of temporal changes in the interest level of students.

This paper presents a viewpoint of "benefit of inconvenience" based on the symbiotic thought and discusses several issues in the research field of systems design. Convenience generally implies "saving labor. " Designers aim to develop goods for sparing humans labor based on the assumption that "the more convenient life is, the richer it is." This assumption has yielded technical developments and outcomes that we generally appreciate. On the other hand, technologies have brought about several problems. One of the way to overcome such problems is pursuing further developments and convenience. But in the case where such developments yield further problems, symbiotic thought doubts of the final destination of this way. An alternative way is to get back to the basic focus on the problems. Benefits of inconveniences navigate us to the promising ways. Inconvenience enhances awareness, prompts creative contribution, and brews affirmative feeling.

In recent years, due to international sports competitions, attention to sports has increased, and sports science research has been conducted to develop athletes who can play in international competitions. In sports science, the measurement of eye movements has attracted a great deal of attention because it can reveal the superior performance of an athlete. However, it has been difficult to measure eye movements during actual competition with conventional wired eye movement measurement devices. We developed a wireless eye movement measurement device and measured the line of sight during actual competition in various sports.

In order to evaluate intellectual productivity such as the efficiency of performing mental works, several studies have been conducted where the operational logs of mental tasks were evaluated. However, it is also necessary to analyze Cognitive Load in mental workers so that the productivity can be evaluated accurately. The authors therefore have proposed a Performance-Cognitive Load model which deals with both task performance and Cognitive Load. By using the model, they have also developed the inference method of the cognitive working states which can evaluate intellectual productivity in more detail than conventional methods. The operational logs of mental tasks as well as pupil diameter and heart rate of the worker were employed as input of this method. As the result of the subject experiment, the authors found that the feasibility of this method so as to evaluate cognitive working states could be suggested and this method could well explain the detail changes of their states. This method is expected to be the novel evaluation method of intellectual productivity.
