This paper presents the findings of a questionnaire survey on usage of air-conditioners and windows among selected households in terraced house areas in Johor Bahru City, Malaysia. The results showed 62% of respondents owned an average of 2.3 air-conditioners. It was suggested that the reduction of both numbers and use of air-conditioners would be one of particularly important means for energy-saving among households in terraced house areas. Although approximately 80% of respondents opened their windows during the daytime, only around 10% did so during the nighttime. It is important to encourage occupants to open their windows especially during the nighttime for utilizing the night ventilation.

This paper aims to explore the state of activities of architects in modern Hiroshima. Based on the sufficient understanding to modern architectures, their designers and designing organizations of pre-war Hiroshima, this study tends to clarify the features of the activities of those architects who were in Hiroshima during Taisho period and the earlier stage of Showa period. The results of this study are: Before being bombarded, the mainstream of architects' activities in Hiroshima was of those non-local architects, particularly,(1) activities of architects by utilizing Trust System in earlier stage of Showa;(2) building institutions of Guan Gong Sheng Ting and the activities of architects;(3) moreover, a series of bank buildings, with the involvement of famous architects, such as Kingo Tatsuno and Uheiji Nagano, and by their respective single piece of work, contribute a lot in the history of architecture of modern Hiroshima. In addition, up to now, little has been known about the activities of folk architects or non-government building institutions. And the pieces of work from local building institutions are few as well.

In this study, we discussed sustainability of habitation in the historical preservation areas by comparative analysis between preservation districts for groups of historical buildings and non-registered districts. Actual situation of preservation and habitation in historical districts were analyzed by 103 respondents of the two-type questionnaires and by fieldworks and interviews at 7 areas. Though historical preservation districts have the advantages for community design over the other districts, they have similar problems in continuation of habitation of ordinary declining towns and villages. We considered general, singular and local solutions for sustainable livability in the districts.

We reexamined the keep of Matsue castle based on the restoration documents in 1950-1955. The results as follows;1. There is possibility of the different construction background between the basement to 2nd floor and the 3rd to 5th floor, because of age, technique and two kinds of Banzuke.2. There are 96 pillars reaching two layers, called Tohshibashira. The Tohshibashira of 5th floor were shaved all sides.3. The 40 percent pillars from 1st to 4th floor are covered with boards, called Tsutsumiita. They were added behind. The restoration staffs tried to remove them but stopped.

In this paper the authors investigated the fundamental data which were necessary for estimation of the optimum number of the fixtures in a lavatory of the single-purpose soccer stadium. The sanitary fixture usage of the audience of a pro-soccer game at a stadium-K were surveyed actually by means of the electric methods. The results are as follows. The number of men was same to female in audience. The waiting line of lavatory during the intermission had been left after the second half of the game had started, therefore some of audience had been disturbed to watch the game. Lack of the sanitary fixture in the female lavatory had caused waiting line during this investigation period. But the occupated period on each fixture was similar to the result of the previous investigation.

It has been 10 years since the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. During this decade, temporary houses privately built have taken a significant role for the recovery process from the earthquake damages. This study firstly shows how many private temporary houses (PTHs) have still existed and disappeared, secondly analyses the characteristics of long life PTHs, and thirdly explores how to utilize the empty plots after PTHs disappeared. As the result of survey, 844 PTHs have been existed and 810 disappeared between 2000 and 2004, It is found that a considerable number of PTHs has continuously existed today in the areas where urban redevelopment and land readjustment programmes have not covered. At the same time, many PTHs had disappeared with the progress of land readjustment programme but empty plot after PTHs disappeared have not always replaced permanent houses.

Rooftop area and potential area for rooftop greening in Tokyo metropolitan area are estimated by analyzing polygon data of buildings and digital aerial photographs on geographic information system The followings are the results of this research 1) Rooftop area of buildings for public, commerce, residence and industry in 23 wards of Tokyo is estimated to be 16,491ha 2) The ratio of the potential area for rooftop greening is estimated to be 77 6% on average 3) Potential area for rooftop greening is 4,917ha, about 8% of 23 wards' area These results give important suggestions for planning scenarios of rooftop greening in Tokyo

This study aims to clarify the realities of the moving out of the residents after the land reajustment project following the great Hanshin-Awaji earthquake. We made a questionnaire of the residents in the Misuga-nishi district, Kobe City where the project was enforced. Clarified points are as follows: 1) The population of the district is 60 percent of pre-earthquake and 60 percent of current residents have moved in from outside the district. 2) Half the number of the residents who moved out maintain a relation to the district where they had lived before the earthquake. 3) Details of the moves of the residents are varied and lasted for an unstable residence period of varing lengths. Only the residents who owned their own houses were able to evade an unstable residence period. 4) The residents who had an unstable residence period depended on facilities and human relations in the district where they had lived before the earthquake. Moreover, they evaluated the environmental characteristic as high. The difference of the dependency on community support influences the achievement level of the residents in reconstructing their lives.

As a result of the case study on two cities in the south west coast, it was clarified that the way of restoration of settlements was quite different. (1) In Moratuwa, victims have restored their settlement for themselves although there is few support by aid groups due to the coastal regulation. (2) In Hikkaduwa, restoration has been advanced initially with support of external people such as international organizations and NGO. However, residents in the buffer zone have been confused by the revival policy and coast construction regulation. Especially, through the reconstruction process of the settlement in Moratuwa, it was understood that people can reconstruct their settlement for themselves, if the settlement has enough physical basements such as common infrastructure and houses suitable for their life style and social relationship for mutual aid based on closeness to job or blood relationship.

For the economical operation of the latent floor-heating storage system using off-peak electricity equipped in a school building, we predicted the required thermal energy in a classroom using fuzzy inference. And we examined them and obtained the following results. (1) We derived the multi-regression equation and predicted the necessary hours to supply electric power with a high accuracy. (2) The next day's indoor mean temperature was approximately estimated by fuzzy set of heat load of storage material. (3) The operation became more simple by using the possibility presumption model of outdoor mean temperature for prediction.

Workshop by a participation has been in a city planning and design in recent years. This workshop is effective method that bring forth an excellent plan and design. By the way I think that workshop is opportunity as community making learnning for the people who are related there. The parpose of this paper is to evaluate the process of the serial workshop for Teine Station renewal project. Through this serial workshop participant's affection and sensitivity toward their living environment was raised, and trust relation between residents and administration raised mutually, and so on.

In order to make our society Universal, we need to respect various needs of various people. In order to include needs of various people into community development plan, workshops involving public are regarded as an effective way. Although we have some methods to evaluate the workshop, we still do not know enough how much awareness has been changed by workshop. The Second Dimensional Image Mapping Method was developed to assist forming self-image of participants in an educational field. This is a study to evaluate an efficacy of workshop using the Second Dimensional Image Mapping Method.

The Kintaikyo in Iwakuni-City, which spans the Nishiki-River in Yamaguchi Prefecture, was built in 1673. The design of the arch of this bridge was studied. It was assumed that the arch of this bridge were designed in arch coordinates with multiple catenary. As a result, the design theory of this bridge was derived for the first time. The multiple catenary was identified from the Kintaikyo in Heisei, and The new Kintaikyo drawing for KAKEKAE was created that is harmony and orderly. Based on this drawing, it was proved that a harmony and orderly bridge can be realized by 3D-CG.

This study aimed to evaluate the bedroom thermal environment of older adults and to clarify the effects of the thermal environment on sleep using a longitudinal field survey. More than 90% of bedroom temperatures were higher than the recommended standard bedroom temperature for older people (23-27℃). However, most participants rated their bedroom environment as cool and comfortable. A high bedroom temperature, above29℃, decreased sleep quality, subjective sleep evaluation, and extended time in bed. Adjusting to an appropriate bedroom thermal environment is important for maintaining sleep quality and preventing excessive sleep duration.
