We examined physical fitness adaptation after six weeks of snow shovelling using different types of shovels. Thirty-three subjects participated in this study and were divided two groups: normal shovel group and less-workload shovel (UD-shovel) group. Grip strength, vertical jump, 10 m obstacle walking, chair rising test, lactate threshold and body mass were measured before and after six weeks of snow shovelling. All measurements showed no significant differences between the groups. The chair rising test and ten meter obstacle walking were significantly at main effects. These values were higher in the after period than in the before period. But there were no significant differences at main effects in grip strength, vertical jump, lactate threshold and body mass. These results suggest that six weeks of snow shovelling may not affect upper body strength and aerobic capacity, but may affect lower body and muscle of trunk strength, power, agility, balance and coordination. These effects were not different if using normal shovels or UD-shovels.

The present study aimed at evaluating effects of different daily exercises on executive function (EF) and mental health in elderly individuals. The twenty-three elderly individuals including; inactive individuals (INACT, n = 9), bowlers (BOWL, n = 8), and runners (RUN, n = 6) were studied (55-64yr). The performance of EF was evaluated by the Stroop Color-Word test. The status of mental health was assessed by the use of questionnaire. The EF was significantly higher in the BOWL and RUN as compared to the INACT. The mental health status in the BOWL was significantly better than the INACT. The present study suggests that daily regular exercises such as bowling and running improve EF in elderly individuals, and in particular BOWL showed a well maintained status of mental health.

成人女性の多くは生理的変化や精神状態の変化を伴う性周期を有しており、近年この性周期に関連したタスクパフォーマンスの変動について注目されている。また今日、女性の社会での活躍は著しく、その職域も拡大していることから、女性の働く意欲と能力を存分に発揮できるような社会システムが要求されている。このような社会背景においても性周期に関連したタスクパフォーマンスの変動について明確にすることは重要なことのひとつと考えられる。性周期に関連したタスクパフォーマンスの変動についての先行研究は、特に身体的不快感や気分の変化といった愁訴の性周期変動もしくは性ステロイドホルモンの性周期変動に関連したタスクパフォーマンスの変動に注目した研究が行われている。性周期に伴う愁訴は月経随伴症状ともいい、一般的に月経前期に「憂鬱」や「いらいらする」などの精神症状や乳房痛などの乳房症状が出現する「月経前症状」と月経中に下腹痛や腰痛の出現する「月経時症状」がある。

It has been well known that far infrared rays radiated from ceramics fiber has thermal effect on humans. This study aimed to investigate if the fabric containing the ceramics fiber, with which the seat and back of chair (FIR) was covered, improve the problems of office workers such as neck - shoulder stiffness and cold sensation of the limbs as compared with non-ceramic fiber chair (BLANK). Ten healty male students (22.31±1.1year-old) volunteered for the study. The decrement of skin temperatures of the dorsal hand and foot at FIR was decreased. The activity of frontal muscle kept a resting level at FIR during mental work, but increased at BLANK and the enhancement of arousal level above optimum was also estimated from the increase in the inclination angle of the trunk at BLANK. It was suggested that FIR might keep the arousal level moderate and improve cold sensation of limbs.

In recent years, PC screens have become wider and larger. The nature of our visual field is that visual acuity is at its highest when someone is looking at the center of something, making the central part look the clearest. Thus, it is inferred that the size of the area that cannot be clearly seen will increase as screens become wider and larger. For this research, we prepared a 27-inch wide PC screen and a 19-inch standard screen, and then presented a task involving calculations as the main work in the center of the screen; furthermore, we prepared a secondary task to test reaction by having subjects respond to circular figures randomly displayed on the edge of the screen. Then, we investigated to what degree subjects were able to acquire graphical information displayed on the edge of the screen while they were focused on the center of the screen. The results showed that between the wide screen and the standard screen, there were no differences in the rate of correct answers for the calculation task displayed in the center of the screen; however, their reaction time on the right side (upper right, center right, lower center) of the screen was longer when they used the wide screen.

To prevent heat stroke, we aimed to clarify the relationship between core body temperature and physiological measurements during incremental load test under hot environment. Subjects exercised under hot environment (33°C for air temperature, 60% for humidity) with measuring rectal temperature and other physiological measurements. In results, the increase of heart rate correlated with not only increase of rectal temperature at the same point in time but also the value after 5 or 10 minutes. Our results suggested that heart rate was useful physiological value as related or estimated core temperature.

Even though it is experimentally known that playing video games causes fatigue, it is difficult to find such quantitative research. It is also known that video game scores improve by repeatedly playing the game. However, the skills acquired by video game players are not clear. This research aims to clarify the elements of fatigue and the skills acquired and improved by playing video games. Fatigue was measured by critical frequency of fusion (CFF). The skilled process associated with video games was measured by using video game scores. Two kinds of video game machines were used. This research confirmed that the CFF of game players decreased linearly after playing the games several times. The scores of video games also increased after playing the games several times. Moreover, game score improvements are described by professing equation in game scores.

This study examined the effect of listening to heart sound after stress on recovery period. Six healthy male university students gave their consent to participate in the measurement. The measurement consisted of three different sessions: (1) 5-min quiet baseline period, (2) 15-min stress period by mental arithmetic task, (3) 10-min stress period during exposure to heart sound or white noise. There was no statistical difference in any measured parameters between heart sound and white noise during recovery period. However heart sound tended to be more positive than white noise for recovery after stress. The order effect was observed only in the skin temperature during stress period.

The authors compiled the definitions of health so far given by WHO and other organs and researchers, and reviewed the concept of health in terms of physiological anthropology. The authors reached the conclusion that health is a state brought about by favorable relation between the environment and humans, as well as a state in which each individual can manifest innate abilities sufficiently. A more healthy environment thus needs to be created.

To evaluate the effects of mattress size on sleep feelings estimated by standardized OSA sleep inventory MA version and sleep quality measured by actigraph, eighteen healthy subjects (8 males, 10 females), aged 61-65, were recorded, sleeping in their homes for 15 consecutive nights under two crossover designed conditions from Friday. A subject slept for 7 consecutive nights (4 adaptation nights and 3 nights for analysis) on a 78cm wide mattress first and then for 8 consecutive nights (4 adaptation nights, 3 nights for analysis and excluded last night) on a 100cm wide mattress. The results showed the sleep on a 100cm mattress indicated better sleep quality and feelings.

We always diagnose migraine using the International Classification of Headache Disorders criteria (version 3). However, since this criteria depends on clinical symptoms and the pathophysiology of migraine is not fully understood, diagnosis sometimes differs between doctors. Hence, we investigate for an appropriate diagnostic biomarker of migraine using the omics approach—a comprehensive analysis of transcriptome, proteome, and genome. Dysfunctions of α-fodrin, apolipoprotein E, and GC-binding protein were found to be candidate biomarkers through proteome, transcriptome, and genome analyses, respectively. Although currently we cannot narrow down to one candidate biomarker, this can be subsequently achieved by evaluating a larger number of patients.

Relevance of decreased cerebral blood flow (CBF) and impaired cognitive function has been pointed out, however, the direct relationship between changes in CBF and cognitive function has not been sufficiently elucidated. The purpose of this study was to determine whether cognitive function would be affected by the acute reductions in CBF in 14 male healthy students. Middle cerebral artery mean blood velocity (MCA V_<mean>) and cognitive function were measured at three conditions; rest (pre), reduced CBF condition (during), and CBF recovery condition (post). The reduction in MCA V_<mean> was elicited by voluntary hyperventilation induced-hypocapnia. Cognitive function was impaired with the reduction in MCA V_<mean>; i.e. reaction time at during hyperventilation condition was significantly longer than those of pre and post conditions (in conflict task; P<0.01). These results suggest that cognitive function may be affected by acute change in MCA V_<mean> by hyperventilation.

This study aimed at evaluating the effect of habitual exercise and the level of daily physical activity on executive function (i.e. inhibitory control) and mental health status in youth adults. Twenty-four undergraduate- and graduateuniversity students participated in this study. All of the subjects underwent evaluations of their mental health (The General Health Questionnaire 28; GHQ28), inhibitory control (Stroop Color and Word Test), past- and current- exercise habits, and daily physical activity levels (International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Version). Current habitual exercise and the level of low intensity physical activity were inversely correlated with score for GHQ28. Past habitual exercise was inversely correlated with reaction time for incongruent trial of the Stroop Color and Word Test. The level of vigorous physical activity was inversely correlated to the accuracy for incongruent trial. This study demonstrates that the level of low intensity daily physical activity may improve inhibitory control and maintain the optimal status of mental health, while the level of vigorous intensity physical activity might lead to an impairment of inhibitory control in youth adults.

This study examined the effect of energy restriction in lunch on lipid metabolism and task performance when the activities simulated the daily life at physical activity level n are performed under 3 conditions; Intake (intake lunch of the normal calories), Half (intake lunch of the half calories), and Skip (skip lunch). In results, it was revealed that energy control of lunch increases fat oxidation rate in inverse ratio to amount of lunch without lowering task performance. Appetite sensations also change according to amount of lunch and feeling of hunger stayed at significantly lower level compared to Skip for about 3 and half hours after energy controlled lunch. These results indicate the possibility that energy control of lunch reduces body fat during daily activities and improves deteriorated heat tolerance.

The purposes of the present study were to observe the thermoregulatory responses from view points of sex difference, seasonal difference between winter and summer, and susceptibility to the heat (atugari) and the cold (samugari). The subjects were 13 females (20.5±0.5yrs, 159.2±6.4cm, 52.1±6.9kg) and 16 males (20.8±1.6yrs, 172.8±4.5cm, 61.6±6.3kg). They put on shorts or underpants, T-shirts and short pants. In the evening, the climatic chamber was controlled at 24℃ RH50%, the temperature increased to 29℃ over 60 minutes gradually. The subjects kept the sitting position. Measurement items were oral temperature, skin temperature, body weight, heart rate, blood pressure and subjective sensations. We determined atugari and samugari according to the subjective sensations of whole body during exposure. The main results were as follows. (1) The classification of atugari and samugari by self judgment did not always agree with the results of exposure experiments, (2) The skin temperatures were winter > summer in the body stem area and winter < summer in the peripheral area in male and female. (3) The skin temperatures were male < female in the body stem area and male > female in the limbs area. (4) Males felt warm in winter than in summer, and they felt warm than females in winter. (5) The values of subjective sensation were atugari > samugari generally. We guessed that the evening exposure produced these phenomena.

This study aims at clarifying the physiological relaxing effect which pink rose brings about for 55 high school students. The stimulation was made by 30 pink roses with non-scent arranged in a vase while the control had no flower for 4 minutes. The physiological indices were the heart rate variability and pulse rate which employed fingertip accelerated plethysmography, and the psychological indicators were the SD method and the shortened version of profile of mood states (POMS). The results as follow: (1) HF were significantly higher, and LF/HF were significantly lower, (2) "comfortable", "natural", and "relaxed" feelings and the mood state were significantly better, while viewing fresh rose flowers than control.

The aims of the present study, were a) to investigate physiological responses in man who ingested branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) drink for 8 consecutive days during and after incremental exercise and b) to examine the effects of BCAA drink intake on aerobic performance during the exercise. Five healthy males ingested 2000mg・day^<-1> of BCAA drink for 7 consecutive days and 10000-mg BCAA before the experiment and performed incremental cycle ergometer exercise until exhaustion. Exercise duration until exhaustion significantly extended and blood lactate concentration at a 100-W load significantly decreased compared to before ingesting BCAA (p<0.05, respectively). These results suggest that BCAA drink intake could result in improving aerobic performance.

Once considered a disease of affluence and confined to industrialized nations, obesity is currently emerging as a major health concern in nearly every country in the world. Available data suggest that the prevalence rate of obesity has reached unprecedented levels in most developing countries, and is increasing at a rate that far outpaces that of developed nations. This increase in obesity has also been documented among North American circumpolar populations and is associated with lifestyle changes related to economic development. While obesity has not been well studied among indigenous Siberians, recent anthropological studies indicate that obesity and its associated comorbidities are important health problems.<br>The present study examines recent adult body composition data from four indigenous Siberian populations (Evenki, Ket, Buriat, and Yakut) with two main objectives: 1) to determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity among these groups, and 2) to assess the influence of lifestyle and socioeconomic factors on the development of excess body fat. The results of this study indicate that obesity has emerged as an important health issue among indigenous Siberians, and especially for women, whose obesity rates are considerably higher than those of men (12% vs. 7%). The present study investigated the association between lifestyle and body composition among the Yakut, and documented substantial sex differences in lifestyle correlates of obesity. Yakut men with higher incomes and who owned more luxury consumer goods were more likely to have excess body fat while, among Yakut women, affluence was not strongly associated with overweight and obesity.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the sedative effect of fragrances which have existed in Japan since long time ago such as sakura, ume and fuji. 17 healthy female Japanese subjects were enrolled (21.5±1.3yr). The salivary amylase activity (sAMY) was analyzed during the inhalation of fragrance. Using questionnaire, subjective evaluation was conducted. aAMY was significantly lower during inhalation of fragrance than control. Inhalation of fragrance affected subjects' work performance. Our results indicated that the Japanese fragrances induced the effect in Japanese females, as assessed by both analysis of sAMY and work performance.
