越後平野は,日本海に面した沖積低地で複数の砂丘列が発達している.平野部の阿賀野川流域の沖積層において,複数のボーリング試料の堆積相や構成鉱物の特徴から,約5000年前の沼沢湖噴火によるラハール堆積物の堆積過程を検討した.ラハールによる堆積物は,当時の海岸部では層厚5~8 m程度の軽石質なデルタを形成した.また,決壊洪水イベントによる膨大な量の火砕物は,デルタシステムを急速に前進させ海岸地形を変化させた.このような大規模な火砕物の再堆積作用の解明は,平野の形成過程における影響だけでなく,下流域での火山土砂災害としての予測につながる課題となるものである.

我々は、未分化幹細胞が心筋細胞へと分化する過程、心筋細胞の機能が破綻する心不全発症の過程の両者におけるエピゲノム制御機構を解析した。まず分化に伴って活性化するWntシグナルの転写制御因子β-cateninが複数のエピゲノム制御因子と複合体を形成して中胚葉エンハンサーを活性化し下流の遺伝子プログラムを誘導することを明らかにした。さらに1細胞トランスクリプトーム解析とエピゲノム解析を統合することで、心臓への圧負荷によって活性化する転写因子群が心不全遺伝子プログラムを制御するエンハンサーを活性化することを見出した。本研究によりエピゲノムが心筋細胞の分化と破綻の両者を制御していることを明らかにした。

オランダ国ライデン自然史博物館に保管されているシーボルトが採集した日本産フナのタイプ標本を現地で精査した結果、C. cuvieriはゲンゴロウブナに,C. langsdorfiiはギンブナに,C. grandculisはニゴロブナによく一致したが、キンブナに対応するタイプ標本はなかった。一方、C. buergeriのタイプシリーズにはオオキンブナとナガブナが混入している可能性が示唆された。日本各地および韓国群山市で採集したフナ59個体と7品種のキンギョを入手し、筋肉断片から抽出したミトコンドリアDNA(mtDNA)ND4/ND5領域の約3400塩基配列に基づく近隣結合法による系統樹作成、外部形態・計数形質・内部形態の計28項目の計測比較、倍数性の確認を行なった。その結果、これらは1.琵琶湖起源のゲンゴロウブナからなる集団、2.韓国・南西諸島のフナとキンギョからなる集団、3.日本主要集団からなることが遺伝学的にも形態学的にも確認された。日本産と韓国産の2倍体フナは異なる久ラスダーを形成したことから、両者には異なる学名を与えるべきと考えた。日本主要集団の2倍体個体はさらに東北亜集団(キンブナ)、中部亜集団(ナガブナとニゴロブナ)、そして南日本集団(オオキンブナ)に分けられるので、これらに与えるべき学名を新たに提案した。また、ゲンゴロウブナ集団はすべて2倍体であったが、他の2集団は、遺伝的に非常に近い2倍体と3倍体からなる集団であった。すなわち、2倍体と3倍体は各地域集団において相互に生殖交流しつつ分化したものと考えられた。キンギョは遺伝的に日本主要集団のフナとは明らかに異なり、韓国・南西諸島の集団に属するので、大陸のフナがその起源であることがあらためて確認された。フナとキンギョの行動特性(情動反応性)が明らかに異なることを示すとともに、その原因となる脳内発現遺伝子の候補を得た。

The teaching machine invented by B.F. Skinner was recog-nized as one of few clear achievements of scientific pedagogy and even appeared in SF. Arthur C. Clarke who wrote the script of the SF movie "2001: A Space Odyssey" with Stanley Kubrick wanted to scientifically define a monolith to be a God who had given intelligence to our ancestors. In other words, he wanted to describe a monolith as a teaching machine as well as a God. However Kubrick did not want to make clear about what a monolith is. Instead, he expressed the inconsistencies of the teaching machine in the artificial intelligence computer "HAL". Further in 1971, by a movie titled "Clockwork Orange", Kubrick visually illustrated the problems of the teaching machine in terms of the following points : According to the Skinner's theory, a human being becomes a slave of the environment; learners are not learning with their own will; the meaning of reinforcement is left to the interpretation of the learners ; learning can not be fully explained by the learner's behavior, therefore, the learner's mind can not be considered a black box as Skinnerian have; effectiveness is given the first priority in the teaching machine; etc.

In China, serious discussions have been carried out as to the phonetic spelling of Chinese geographical names. In this field, Lu-hsin 魯迅 was either leader or contributor, Recently, they have maintained that the complicated Chinese characters would have to be discontinue and have begun a use of Latinized Chinese. In China today, national minorities have the same right as Chinese have. After liberation, vigorous help has been given to those nationalities who as yet have no written languages of their own, to create their own written languages. Some of their alphabets represent sounds similar to those of the corresponding Chinese letters and others have no corresponding letters in Chinese. They use those letters for geographical names, When they study the languages of national minorities, they are studying Chinese. This article explains the phonetic spelling of Chinese geographical names, by examining some problems of the national minority, the history of Chinese phonetic ism and the maintenance of Lu-hsin.
