Spatial and temporal relations between large interplate earthquakes and eruptive activities along Northeast Japan was studied by means of a two-dimensional model using the finite element method. Stress fields were calculated using seismological data in Northeast Japan. The stress value for each earthquake was normalized by using the seismic moment Mo instead of earthquake magnitude M. Stress differences before and after great earthquakes show close relationships with eruptive activities in Northeast Japan. The results suggest that eruptive activities increase under the increased compressive strain of pre-seismic conditions and their activities abruptly decrease under post-seismic conditions.

Generation life table can be constructed by following a cohort of, say, 100, 000 persons from the moment of birth through successive calendar years, recording, in each year of life, the actual number of survivors, until all have been accounted for by death . In order to construct the generation life tables, it is necessary to make use of the data of death rates for the period of more than 100 years. But in the pre-census years, the death reports were incomplete and the populations were domicile, and not census enumeration. Hence these early life tables by the Bureau of Statistics before the census are quite unreliable. Therefore Matsuura and Mizushima attempted to reform these pre-census life tables. We used the estimated values of q0-q100 on the basis of these reformed life tables and many reliable life tables, so that we constructed the generation life tables of persons born in 1895. The tables shown here seem more reasonable and appropriate than those which have been known until the present day.

The ancient kingdom of Israel, which consisted of 12 tribes, was in circa 922 B.C. divided into the southern kingdom of Judah and the northern kingdom of Israel. 10 tribes out of the 12 belonged to the northern kingdom and the rest to the southern kingdom. The people of the northern kingdom were exiled to Assyria in 722 B.C. never to return to Israel. They are called the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel. They were dispersed all over the world. Their descendants are found not only in the western world, but also in the eastern world especially along the Silk Road. Japan and Israel are geographically far from each other and seemingly unrelated nations. However, the two nations are remarkably similar in mythology, religious rituals, language, daily customs, etc. Some of the Japanese and Jewish scholars who are conversant with the ancient cultures of Japan and Israel claim that numerous striking similarities between the two cultures are proofs indicating that the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel came to ancient Japan. The purpose of this paper is to examine the authenticity of their claim by making a comparisonof the ancient cultures of Japan and Israel, which may help solve some of the cultural riddles of Japan such as why Japanese like rectangles or why Japanese have numbers in their names.

After the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Accident, many people are concerned about the contamination of radioactive substances in their ordinary surrounding environment. In this study, we determined the levels of radioactive contamination with 137Cs in towels, very common textile products in our life, after exposing those to the soil collected from a farm field near Fukushima city. Three kinds of towels made from the same cotton fiber with different thickness were exposed to the soil under dry or water-suspension conditions. The radioactivities of 137Cs retained/absorbed were 30-50% of the loaded radioactivity per gram weight of the towel. When their weight and absorbency are taken into consideration, the differences in thickness did not so much affect the above values. Under standard washing condition, which mimic those with household washing machine, almost all the radioactive cesium were removed from the towels contaminated under the dry conditions, whereas only 50-70% were removed when the towels were contaminated under the wet conditions. A commercial soil-release treatment (Preshade-SR) didn't reduce the contamination under both dry and wet conditions, although processing the towels with silver nano-particles did.

The antarctic whaling tanker, "Nisshin Maru" (22, 000 tons deadweight) was successfully built on 28th Sept. '36 by the Kawasaki Dockyard Co., Ltd., Kobe, in the record of only 216 days from laying down of the keel to the delivery to Messrs. Taiyohogei Kabushiki Kaisha. The vessel is the largest tanker of its kind ever built in Japan, and the following dates indicate the extraordinary speedy program at which she was built in such a short period.[table]There were many difficulties which they had to overcome, such as : difficult construction on an ordinary building slip not well arranged with up-to-date crane equipments, unusual short time limit of construction, and hardship of prompt collection of materials, etc. They laid down therefore a strict schedule so as not to delay the delivery and by good luck, it was faithfully obeyed by the men of all departments of the Dockyard Co. Combined with the mutual co-operation of all men and proper supply of all necessary materials, the schedule was very satisfactorily carried out in good order. On the other hand, special attention was also paid to the working hours as well as labour shifts so that the workmen should not be overworked either mentally or physically. Thus their earnest efforts have at last produced good results with such an epochmaking record of speely ship building which has never been experienced in the world. In addition, this vessel adopted the "Isherwood Bracketless system, " the simplicity of which has proved a good effect upon such a quick work as "Nisshin Maru." 国民の科学技術に対する関心と科学技術に関する意識との関連について検討した。その主な結果は以下のとおりであった。1)科学技術に対する関心が低い層は、科学技術の持つリスクや不確実性に否定的である、2)科学技術に対する関心が低い層は、科学技術への参画意識が低い、3)科学技術に対する関心が低い層は、様々な課題の達成に向けた科学技術への期待が低い、4)科学技術に対する関心が高い層と比べ低い層は、新聞や本を読まない、5)小・中学生の頃の理科に関連する経験は、将来の科学技術に対する関心の程度に影響を及ぼす。

The life sciences field is entering an era of big data with the breakthroughs of science and technology. More and more big data-related projects and activities are being performed in the world. Life sciences data generated by new technologies are continuing to grow in not only size but also variety and complexity, with great speed. To ensure that big data has a major influence in the life sciences, comprehensive data analysis across multiple data sources and even across disciplines is indispensable. The increasing volume of data and the heterogeneous, complex varieties of data are two principal issues mainly discussed in life science informatics. The ever-evolving next-generation Web, characterized as the Semantic Web, is an extension of the current Web, aiming to provide information for not only humans but also computers to semantically process large-scale data. The paper presents a survey of big data in life sciences, big data related projects and Semantic Web technologies. The paper introduces the main Semantic Web technologies and their current situation, and provides a detailed analysis of how Semantic Web technologies address the heterogeneous variety of life sciences big data. The paper helps to understand the role of Semantic Web technologies in the big data era and how they provide a promising solution for the big data in life sciences.

デジタルカメラの小型化, 高解像度化, 一般化に伴い, これを入力手段として用いた文字認識・文書画像解析への期待が高まりつつある.本稿では, デジタルカメラを用いた文字認識・文書画像解析について現在の代表的な技術を俯瞰するとともに, バーコードなどの関連技術との比較によって, 文字認識, 文書画像解析の立場や将来への課題を浮き彫りにする.また, 将来に向けた試みの一つとして, 著者らが「バーコードリーダ並みに手軽で高精度な文字認識」を目指して行っている研究「複比を用いた文字への情報埋め込み」の一端についても紹介する.

最近の子どもが「疲れた」ということばを様々な意味をもって頻繁に使っている。子どもの「疲れた」ということばに隠された子どもの生活を見るために幼稚園25園、大阪府下の幼稚園の先生23名の合計136名を対象に「子どもの疲れ」に対する自由記述のアンケート調査を行い次のような結果を得た。子どもの「疲れた」は心疲れ型・体疲れ型・満足型・口癖型の4種類に分類できた。その中で体疲れ型が1番高い割合を占めた。次に心疲れ型の子どもは4歳児の全体に対するA心疲れ型の占める割合が5歳児のそれよりも少し高いが、子どもの「疲れた」は単に体の疲れのみならず「したくない」という気持ちをもち、「疲れた」という言葉で代弁する子どもの存在がわかった。十分活動して満足したときにも「疲れた」を言う子どももいる。また、D口癖型の###占める割合は他のどの型より低く、わずか3%にとどまった。また、男児の事例が109例と、女児よりも多いという結果になった。
