Right ventricular wall motion was readily accessible for echocardiographic recording along the right sternal border in 27 pediatric patients (age: 24hrs-12yrs). Right ventricular epicardial and endocardial wall motion could be recorded only at the right sternal border in 10 of these patients, emphasizing the need for a new, alternative examination site.<br>Calculated measurements of right ventricular wall thickness recorded from both right and left sternal borders (7pts) were similar (range of diff.=0-0.6mm; mean of dill.=0.26mm). Autopsy confirmation of right ventricular wall thickness was obtained in 2 patients.Epicardial motion could not be identified at the left sternal border in 10 patients. In these patients, right ventricular wall thickness was estimated by measuring from the inner chest wall to the endocardium. These measurements were compared to right ventricular wall thickness obtained from the right sternal border. Wall thickness obtained from the left sternal border was significantly underestimated in the absence of a definite epicardial interface (range of diff.=0.2-2.6mm; mean of diff.=1.3mm).<br>We conclude that the right sternal border is a useful examination site when studies from the left sternal border are technically inadequate for evaluation. Measurement of right ventricular wall thickness should not be attempted unless both epicardial and endocardial interfaces are recorded simultaneously.

Observations are providing increasingly detailed quantitative information about the accretion flows that power such high energy systems as X-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei. Analytic models of such systems must rely on assumptions such as regular flow geometry and a simple, parameterized stress. Global numerical simulations offer a way to investigate the basic physical dynamics of accretion flows without these assumptions. For black hole accretion studies one solves the equations of general relativistic magnetohydro-dynamics. Magnetic fields are of fundamental importance to the structure and evolution of accretion disks because magnetic turbulence is the source of the anomalous stress that drives accretion. We have developed a three-dimensional general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulation code to evolve time-dependent accretion systems self-consistently. Recent global simulations of black hole accretion disks suggest that the generic structure of the accretion flow is usefully divided into five regimes : the main disk, the inner disk, the corona, the evacuated funnel, and the funnel wall jet. The properties of each of these regions are summarized.

Multilayered polyelectrolyte poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate)/poly(allylamine hydrochloride) microcapsules prepared using layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly technology were filled by UV-photopolymerization of acrylamide derivatives directly into the capsule interior. Influences of component properties and polymerization conditions on the structure of the obtained composites are discussed. Mixing formed polymer chains with the capsule wall material stabilizes the initial wall conformation and lowers capsule sensitivity to environmental conditions.

This is a resistence literature about the Jews living in the ghetto in Warsaw. How they were brutally treated and finally led into resistance by Germans in the Second World War is minutely described in this book. The story is told in diaristic way, which, we find, more effective and natural than in any other methods. John Hersey wrote "The Wall" based on the diaries left by Noach Levinson, a resident Jew in theghetto who seems to have been a record-maniac. He wrote, "the slightest kind of personal, diaristic notes for some polite Jewish history 1 intended in a quiet year to write." This "slightest kind" is not so slightly entered in his diary but only after having been most carefully investigated personally and told in detail by others. So, one incident has some entrances. And when he put "them down, he naturally put the incident less importance, than people's reactions to them". This gave his writing a cubic beauty. Hersey used the same method. Levinson survived one year after escape, and his archives were dug out after his death. He began writing his diaries in 1935 through 1943. During the three and a half years, he wrote more than four million words- "which the editor has been obliged to reduce to onetwentieth their original scope." Hersey's efforts for two years in "editing" and the cubic beauty produced by telling stories from various angles have given a new phase to the diaristic literature. I have here tried to find out the definite position of the diaristic literature in the present-day literature through this study of "The Wall".

The John dory, Zeus faber, has a pair of intrinsic sonic muscles on the swimbladder wall and produces sounds by rapid contractions of the muscles. The physical properties of the sounds and the detailed innervation pattern to the sonic muscle were investigated. The dory emitted two types of the sounds: "bark" and "growl". The bark consisted of continuous multiple pulses and lasted about 85ms on the average. The growl consisted of a group of intermittent single-pulses and lasted for 50 ms to 1.2 s. The main frequencies of both sounds were almost similar and ranged between 200 to 600 Hz. The sonic muscles were innervated by the sonic branches of the 1st.4th spinal nerves. Interestingly, the innervation from the first spinal nerve was newly revealed in the present study. Total of 1,700 myelinated axons innervated the sonic muscles on both sides. There was no sex difference in the sonic muscle size as judged by the sonic muscle-somatic index (SMSI, male: 0.675%, female: 0.670%). The sounds in the dory possibly function as a threatening means.

Aim: Adipokines are protein products of adipose tissue with paracrine and endocrine actions, which have been implicated in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease. Locally produced adipokines, especially by periadventitial adipose tissue, may affect vascular physiology and pathology. We investigated the expression of adiponectin, visfatin, leptin and novel adipokines chemerin and vaspin in human periaortic and epicardial adipose tissue, as well as their correlation to aortic and coronary atherosclerosis.<BR>Methods: Standard immunohistochemical staining for the adipokines was performed on samples of human periaortic, pericoronary and apical epicardial adipose tissue. Atherosclerotic lesions of the adjacent vascular wall were assessed using the AHA classification.<BR>Results: Adipokines were expressed in periadventitial and apical epicardial adipose tissue and - except for adiponectin - in vascular smooth muscle cells and foam cells in atherosclerotic lesions. Aortic atherosclerosis was positively correlated with chemerin, vaspin, visfatin and leptin periaortic fat expression. Coronary atherosclerosis was positively correlated with chemerin and visfatin pericoronary fat expression. Adipose tissue adiponectin expression was negatively correlated to atherosclerosis in both locations. Expression of adipokines in apical epicardial fat was not associated with atherosclerosis.<BR>Conclusions: Our results show: a) a different expression pattern of adiponectin, visfatin, leptin, chemerin and vaspin in periaortic, pericoronary and apical epicardial adipose tissue, b) a correlation of these adipokines with either aortic or coronary atherosclerosis or both in a pattern characteristic for each adipokine and suggest that locally produced adipokines might differently affect the atherosclerotic process in different locations.

A screening system is described that can detect and confirm inhibitors of the late steps of cell wall biosynthesis. The primary high through-put screen monitors induction of &beta;-lactamase following exposure to samples, in an <i>Escherichia coli envA</i>- strain that carries the &beta;-lactamase gene from <i>Citrobacter freundii</i> on a plasmid. Positive samples were detected from compound libraries, from natural products libraries, and from fractions of natural products crude preparations. These samples were then subjected to <i>in vitro</i> assays that could detect the incorporation of soluble cell wall precursor into Lipid I, Lipid II, and polymerized cell wall, using a TLC system that was very accurate and unambiguous in detecting known cell wall inhibitors. One partially purified sample containing a novel antibacterial agent derived from natural products was found to inhibit the formation of Lipid I (50% inhibition at &le;62.5ng/ml), whereas another partially purified sample also derived from natural products inhibited transglycosylation into cell wall polymer (50% inhibition at &le;10&mu;g/ml). This screening system proved to be especially useful because it was sufficiently sensitive and robust to detect inhibitors among samples of crude preparations or varying states of purity.

本論は、神戸女学院大学図書館所蔵のトニック・ソルファ掛図(全19本)について、その音楽的内容を検討することによって、明治期音楽教育の実態の一端を明らかにする。各掛図の掲載内容を検討し、同じく本学図書館所蔵のトニック・ソルファ教本『トニック・ソルファ・ミュージック・リーダー(The Tonic Sol-Fa Music Reader, revised and improved, by Theodore F. Seward &B.C.Unseld, Approved by John Curwen. The biglow & Main Co.)』(1890)の教育内容と付き合わせたところ、次の結果が得られた。1)これら19本は、モデュレイター(音階図)3本、リズム譜3本、トニック・ソルファ譜13本の3種から成る。2)トニック・ソルファ法の教程は6段階で構成されるが、第1段階に属する掛図が11本、第2段階が5本、第3段階が3本である。3)モデュレイターとリズム譜は第1~3段階に対応するものが各1本であるが、リズム譜については第1、2段階と掛図に打たれた番号との組み合わせに齟齬が見られる。4)トニック・ソルファ譜は第1段階9本、第2段階3本、第3段階1本で、第1段階のものが圧倒的に多い。これは音楽教師 E.タレー(1848~1921)が「最初より七音を用いられず、ドミソの三音を以って其の音程を明らかにする為掛図を用いられたり、手を上下にされたり、又は文字に高低を附けて生徒を階名で答えしめられました。右の三音を明確に覚えしめた後、関係ある音を順次に教えられ、決して先生は一時に多くの事を教えられず、One thing at a time を繰り返し繰り返し申されました」という本学卒業生の回想にも合致する。5)1925年の本学財産目録には73本のトニック・ソルファ掛図が記載されており、これら19本はその一部を成していたと考えられる。This paper examines the mineteen wall charts of the Tonic Sol-fa System possessed by the Kobe College Library. By comparison with the textbook The Tonic Sol-Fa Music Reader, revised and improved by Theodore F. Seward & B.C. Unseld, The Biglow & Main Co., 1890, also possessed by the Library, and signed by one of the music teachers of the college, namely Mrs. Stanford (1856-1941), the following facts have been made clear : 1) These nineteen charts can be divided into three groups, namely, three modulators, three rhythm charts and thirteen tonic sol-fa charts. 2) Eleven of them are for the first, five are for the second, and three are for the third step of the six steps of the Tonic Sol-fa teaching system. 3) Of the modulators and the rhythm charts, each of the first three steps has one corresponding chart, while the rhythm charts of the first two steps have some confusion. 4) Of the thirteen Tonic Sol-fa charts, nine are for the first, three are for the second and one is for the third step of the above mentioned six steps. The fact that the first step charts make up the biggest group tallies with the recollection of an alumna of Kobe College, Chie Yanagida. According to her, the music teacher Miss Elizabeth Torrey (1848-1921) did not start with all of the seven notes of the diatonic scale but only three, do mi and so, using charts, or moving her hands up and down and so on, saying repeatedly "one thing at a time". 5) Of the seventy three charts of the Tonic Sol-fa System recorded in Kobe College's inventory of the year 1925, nineteen, that is a little more than a quarter, have survived.

Investigation of the identity and modes of action of neurotransmitters in the mammalian central nervous system can be facilitated by simultaneous intracellular recording of membrane potential and extracellular iontophoresis of agonists and antagonists. We describe here techniques for conveniently constructing a compound microelectrode, originally described by Sonnhof (Pflugers Arch 341, 351-358, 1973), suitable for such studies. The Sonnhof electrode consists of two components, a centraxial micropipette for recording membrane potential surrounded by a cylindrical array of 6 pipettes for iontophoresis. The cylindrical array tapers coaxially and terminates in 6 contiguous, crescent-shaped orifices surrounding the terminal portion of the central pipette, 25-50 &mu;m from the tip. Pipettes were constructed from borosilicate glass tubing of 1-mm wall thickness having a 10-mm or 16-mm outer diameter. The resistances, flux and transport numbers for iontophoresis of glycine were measured for pipettes constructed from both sizes of glass. Flux increased with increasing levels of current, and transport number decreased with increasing micropipette resistance. A spherical diffusion model points out the steep dependence of steady state concentration on diffusional distance, stressing the importance of diminishing the distance between the iontophoresis source and the recording site. This is particularly true when brief pulses of current are used.

Microleakage in human and bovine teeth was compared. Cavities were prepared on the buccal surface in 20 human and 20 bovine teeth (3mm&times;2mm in depth). The teeth were divided into 4 groups (n=10) according to the substrate and adhesive (CLEARFIL SE Bond-CF or Scotchbond 1-SB1). Resin composite (Wave) was applied in two increments, each cured for 30 sec. Specimens were stored in 100% relative humidity at 37&deg;C for 24 hr and submitted to 1,000 thermal cycles, followed by immersion in 0.6% aqueous rhodamine for 48 hr. Specimens were rinsed and sectioned at the center. Microleakage length was measured and the score recorded using the following scale: 0-none, 1-up to enamel junction, 2-up to pulp wall, 3-in pulp wall, 4-beneath pulp wall. Percentage of leakage penetration into the cavity was submitted to an ANOVA and Tukey's test (5%) and the scores submitted to the Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's multiple comparison tests (5%). When bovine teeth were used, SB1 (87.76%) showed a statistically higher penetration mean than CF (66.22%). When human teeth were used, no difference was found between SB1 (47.35%) and CF (36.01%). When scores were analyzed, SB1 showed no difference to CF. The differences found should be taken into consideration when evaluating adhesive microleakage using bovine teeth.

[Purpose] This study was performed to provide evidence for the therapeutic exercise approach through a compative analysis of muscle activities according to climbing wall inclination. [Subjects and Methods] Twentyfour healthy adult subjects without climbing experience performed static exercises at a therapeutic climbing at with various inclination angles (0°, 10°, 20°), and the activities of the trunk muscles (rectus abdominis, obliquus externus abdominis, obliquus internus abdominis, erector spinae) were measured using surface electromyography (EMG) for 7 seconds. [Results] Significant differences were found between the inclination angles of 10° and 0°, as well as 20° in the rectus abdominis, obliquus internus abdominis, right obliquus externus abdominis, and right erector spinae. [Conclusion] Based on measurements of trunk muscle activity in a static climbing standing position at different angles, significant changes in muscle activity appear to be induced at 10 degrees. Therefore, the results appear to provide clinically relevant evidence.

This paper describes the use of a self-tuning fuzzy prediction algorithm for wind speed and wind direction in typhoon area. The wind speed and wind direction have been measured by an anemovane on the top of a power-transmission tower. First, the fuzzy prediction rules are adjusted by a tuning algorithm so that the estimated data agree with the measured data for the past typhoon. After tuning process is completed, the wind speed and wind direction for a different typhoon are predicted by using the tuned fuzzy rules and the current data. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system.

比較的高緯度に位置する東京湾では,大きな高潮災害の観測例が少ない.しかし,極低頻度とはいえ高リスクの都市災害に備える必要性から,過去約80年の観測資料から推定される高潮ハザードポテンシャルの定性的評価を行った.東京湾近傍を通過した過去の台風資料から,危険高潮イベントを引き起こすであろう台風特性の変化シナリオを推定した.それらを既往の台風経路上に換装し,非線形長波方程式モデルによる予測計算を実施した.その結果,過去データにもとづく東京における高潮ポテンシャルは最大で約1.8 m程度と見積もられた.また,吹き寄せや湾水振動の作用が強い北進の経路は、東京湾にとって危険性が高いことを示した.特に危険な経路においては,台風接近時の湾口方向の吹き寄せ,および通過後の外力の解放と風向の急変が湾内での振動を卓越させていることを示した.
