This study compared the range of hallux valgus angle (HVA) deformity between basketball players and same aged non-basketball players as controls. The participants included 21 basketball players (9 males, 12 females, mean age 18 years) and 36 age-matched college students (19 males, 17 females, mean age 20 years) who served as controls. After direct palpation of the first metatarsal and proximal phalange, we measured the HVA deformity using a photographic approach in the women basketball players and a goniometer for the men basketball players and all controls. The HVA was greater in basketball players than in the controls. Among female basketball players, the HVA was significantly greater in guards compared with forwards and centers. In conclusion, playing basketball may increase the HVA. The greater increase in HVA among guards might arise because they are required to make diagonal and horizontal movements that increase the burden on the foot. In general insole or ergonomic shoes could reduce pain, improved walking ability, and hallux valgus angle for prophylactic or therapeutic approaches. Therefore, an appropriate preventive interventional program should be developed.

This study uses repeated cross-sectional data from 1982 to 2007 to understand labor force behavior of Japanese men, focusing on the increase in non-regular employment. I find that regular employment fell significantly for recent cohorts of less-educated men. Regular employment of single men and less-educated married men responded more to the business cycle than did regular employment of highly educated married men. Cohorts who finished their schooling in the late 1990s and early 2000s experienced a severe decline in regular employment at young ages, although this phenomenon was mainly observed among single men and not among married men.

詰将棋は思考パズルとしての精巧な論理性と音楽,美術のような感動を与える芸術性を持つ.我々は,詰将棋の傑作とは何かについて解明するために,単なる定性的な評価だけでなく,詰将棋のデータベース(約12000問題)を構築し,従来の作品に関する客観的データの収集,分析,考察を行なってきた.今回,主観と客観を結びつける実験として「将棋世界」誌で行なわれた7手詰・5手詰コンテストを研究題材として選んだ.まず,このコンテストの評価に影響を与えたと思われる項目について定量的に計測し,得点(感性の総合評価)との相関係数や従来作品との差を分析した.たとえば詰め上がり図の閉塞度の小さな問題が高得点に最も貢献していることが明らかになった.さらに詰将棋のルールと感性についても定量的に考察した.

This paper examines the treatment of Genbaku-Dome and its site (Saiku-cho and Sarugaku-cho) in the Hiroshima Urban Reconstruction Plan and the Hiroshima Peace City Plan. The site of the Genbaku-Dome, initially included in Chuo Park (Motomachi), became a part of Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park with Nakajima Park (Nakajima-honcho) at the time of Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Peace Memorial Hall Competition. This paper also examines competition guidelines and competition plans, and evaluates Kenzo Tange and his colleague's plan and others' plan.

より良い緩和ケアを提供するために, がん患者やその家族の意見を収集することは重要である. 本研究の目的は, 「緩和ケア普及のための地域プロジェクト」(OPTIM)の介入前に行われた, 進行がん患者と遺族を対象とした質問紙調査で得られた自由記述欄の内容を分析し, がん治療と緩和ケアに対する要望と良かった点を収集・分類することである. 全国4地域の進行がん患者1,493名, 遺族1,658名に調査票を送付し, 回収した調査票のうち, 自由記述欄に回答のあったがん患者271名, 遺族550名を対象とした. 本研究の結果から, がん患者と遺族は, 患者・医療者間のコミュニケーションの充実, 苦痛緩和の質の向上, 療養に関わる経済的負担の軽減, 緩和ケアに関する啓発活動の増加, 病院内外の連携システムの改善, などの要望を持っていることが明らかとなった. 平成19年度は,これまで行ってきた昭和45年の日本万国博覧会(大阪万博)め「お祭り広場」における催し物と,その実現に大きな役割を果たした宝塚歌劇団郷土芸能研究会の活動にっいてのフォローアップ調査を行った。和歌山県太地町の鯨踊りについては,前年度の渡辺武雄氏とのインタビューにおいて,宝塚郷土芸能研究会が復活に関わったことを知ることができたので,本年度は地元で復活を進めた経緯にっいて,現地調査と聞き取り調査を行った。復活に際しての牽引役であった当時の青年のメンバーに対して行った聞き取り調査によって,現地での復活の機運と,郷土芸能研究会の来訪がタイミング良く重なり,とくに音楽の復元等で郷土芸能研究会の指導を受けた様子などが明らかになった。また,高知県の阿波踊りのフォローアップ調査では,当時進んでいた踊りグループ(連)の再編や,その組織化(阿波おどり振興協会,徳島県阿波踊り協会の発足等)が,直接万博への出演が契機となったとは言えないものの,その出演団体選考などに影響を与えていたことが分かった。現在,有名連として知られる多くの踊りグループは,こうした協会への所属によって正統性を認められているが,その権威化に「万博出演」の果たした役割は大きいと考えられる。また,宝塚歌劇団郷土芸能研究会の活動については,平成20年1月26日に開催された民俗芸能学会第117回研究例会において,池田文庫の鶴岡正生氏を迎えて「阪急学園池田文庫収蔵の日本民俗芸能取材資料の紹介」と題した講演をしてもらい,研究代表者(俵木)が司会・コメンテーターとして,学会にその活動の紹介を行い,残された資料の今後の利用について意見交換を行った。こうした調査の成果をまとめ,3月に研究成果報告書を刊行した。

資金運用・調達のための金融商品は、様々な金融取引の組合せから構成されているが、その設計は金融市場の動向を考慮しながら金融取引の組合せの中から最適なものを探索する必要がある。我々は、ファンドマネージャの持つ設計ノウハウを組合せ探索の開始点の設定ノウハウと改良ノウハウの2種に整理し、これらに基づく支援方式を開発した。これによりベテランファンドマネージャの判断ノウハウを反映し、かつ探索効率良く設計作業を支援することができる。本稿では、この金融商品設計を行うファンドマネージャのための意思決定支援探索方式を提案する。

In the winter of 2009/2010, Japan and the East Asian region experienced a frequent occurrence of cold air outbreaks. Although the winter average temperature in the Japan main islands was slightly positive (+0.81°C for DJF average and +0.71°C for NDJFM average), repeated decline in temperature was notable throughout the season. One explanation for this abnormal winter season is the extremely negative condition of the Arctic Oscillation (AO) that persisted from December to mid-January. However, AO alone does not provide sufficient explanation for the cold air outbreak during November or its intraseasonal periodicity. A case study of the cold air outbreak that reached Japan on Dec. 18 reveals an anomalous ridge forming over the Barents-Kara Sea, which leads to the cold air accumulation over western Siberia. The pressure anomaly subsequently shifted westward to mature into a blocking high which created a wave-train pattern downstream, advecting the cold air eastward towards East Asia and Japan. The sequence of events was also apparent in multiple cases throughout the season. This study suggests that there is a strong and systematic linkage in the intraseasonal timescale between the atmospheric condition over the Barents-Kara Sea and the cold air accumulation over the Eurasian continent, leading to the anomalous cold air outbreak over East Asia and Japan. The mechanism may also provide explanation to extreme winter conditions such as those observed during the winter of 2010/2011.
