わが国では毎年約4万点の図書が出版され、これの目録作成、受発注のため図書情報システムもサービスされている。しかしながら、現行の各システムに用いられている書誌データベースは、ユーザである読書人、図書館員が選書、購入に必要な図書の目次・要旨などの内容情報がなく、貴重な社会の文化資源の周知の欠如と、情報資源活用の機会損失を起こしている。このため、書店・取次店が中心となって、世界の出版界でも類例のない新刊図書案内情報データベース「BOOK」を1986年より構築を開始し、オンライン、CD?ROMなどの電子情報サービスはもとより、本の年鑑「ブックページ」を印刷出版し、公共の利用に供している。About 40,000 books are published every year in Japan, and we use the services of a book data system for making a catalogue of these books and for receiving and placing orders. However, the book database currently used for each system lacks information on the contents such as table of contents and a summary needed by readers and librarians to make up their minds which to buy and to select. This fact is resulting in a lack of the valuable opportunities to acquire well-known cultural assets in our society, and in the loss of resources. Therefore, leading bookstore and wholesalers started in 1986 the production of a unique database. "BOOK" carrying information on newly issued books. This does not only gives us electronic information services such as ON-LINE, CD-ROM, but also prints and issues a book almanac, 'Book Page' for public use.
