[Purpose] This study aimed to determine the impact of aerobic exercise on aerobic capacity, balance, and treadmill time in patients with thermal burn injury. [Subjects and Methods] Burned adult patients, aged 20–40 years (n=30), from both sexes, with second degree thermal burn injuries covering 20–40% of the total body surface area (TBSA), were enrolled in this trial for 3 months. Patients were randomly divided into; group A (n=15), which performed an aerobic exercise program 3 days/week for 60 min and participated in a traditional physical therapy program, and group B (n=15), which only participated in a traditional exercise program 3 days/week. Maximal aerobic capacity, treadmill time, and Berg balance scale were measured before and after the study. [Results] In both groups, the results revealed significant improvements after treatment in all measurements; however, the improvement in group A was superior to that in group B. [Conclusion] The results provide evidence that aerobic exercises for adults with healed burn injuries improve aerobic physical fitness and balance.

The regulatory interactions among genes are summarized by the gene regulatory network. Recently, the gene regulatory network that is described by the differential equations is widely used, and a lot of inference methods using time course data of the gene expression levels have been proposed. One of the successful inference methods of the gene regulatory network is the method using the neural network. In this study, as a method to improve a performance of the gene regulatory network inference using the neural networks, we propose the method to apply a kind of majority rule to the conventional method. Our proposed method infers the regulatory interactions in the gene network based on the results of a lot of trials of the inference using neural networks. In the simulations, we evaluate our proposed method using artificially defined gene regulatory networks. The results show the validity of the proposed method. The results also suggest that the strategy of the proposed method is applicable to various methods using the heuristic solver.

To formulate more accurate guidelines for musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) linked to Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS), delineation of the response of bone tissue under different frequencies and duration of vibration need elucidation. Rat-tails were vibrated at 125 Hz (9 rats) and 250 Hz (9 rats), at 49 m/s2, for 1D (6 rats), 5D (6 rats) and 20D (6 rats); D=days (4 h/day). Rats in the control group (6 rats for the vibration groups; 2 each for 1D, 5D, and 20D) were left in their cages, without being subjected to any vibration. Structural and biochemical damages were quantified using empty lacunae count and nitrotyrosine signal-intensity, respectively. One-way repeated-measure mixed-model ANOVA at p<0.05 level of significance was used for analysis. In the cortical bone, structural damage quantified through empty lacunae count was significant (p<0.05) at 250 Hz (10.82 ± 0.66) in comparison to the control group (7.41 ± 0.76). The biochemical damage was significant (p<0.05) at both the 125 Hz and 250 Hz vibration frequencies. The structural damage was significant (p<0.05) at 5D for cortical bone while the trabecular bone showed significant (p<0.05) damage at 20D time point. Further, the biochemical damage increased with increase in the duration of vibration with a significant (p<0.05) damage observed at 20D time point and a near significant change (p=0.08) observed at 5D time point. Structural and biochemical changes in bone tissue are dependent upon higher vibration frequencies of 125 Hz, 250 Hz and the duration of vibration (5D, 20D).

This focusing review summarizes our recent works on the dissemination of capillary liquid chromatography through various approaches, i.e. simple stepwise-gradient elution system, on-line sample enrichment system, alternate-pumping recycle chromatography system, on-line immobilized-enzyme reactor, development of novel stationary phases, etc. Capillary liquid chromatography saves energy and waste, and it possesses several advantages over the conventional liquid chromatography; however, it has not been much popularized since its appearance and most users still prefer to use conventional liquid chromatography if there is a choice between them. Our research focuses on, but not limited to, developing versatile capillary liquid chromatography systems that are not only environmental-friendly but also user-friendly, and novel stationary phases that could be operated under mixed modes conditions by manipulating the eluent, which are applicable to real samples analyses will therefore eventually switch the users from “conventional” to “capillary”.

Ten difructose anhydrides (DFAs) were the predominant products formed from the thermal treatment of equal amounts of D-glucose and D-fructose under melting conditions at 150°C for 60 min. The DFAs were isolated from the reaction mixture by carbon-Celite column chromatography and preparative high-performance liquid chromatography. The structures of the saccharides were confirmed by NMR measurements. We present the complete assignments of the 1H- and 13C-NMR signals of two of these DFAs for the first time.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the therapeutic effects of virtual reality-based ankle exercise on the dynamic balance, muscle tone, and gait ability of stroke subjects. [Subjects and Methods] Twenty persons who were in the chronic stroke subjects of this study and they were included and assigned to two groups: experimental (VRAE; Virtual Reality-based Ankle Exercise group) (n=10) and control groups (n=10). The VRAE group performed virtual environment system ankle exercise, and the control group watched a video. Both groups performed their respective interventions for 30 minutes per day, 5 times per week over a 6-week period. To confirm the effects of the intervention, dynamic balance, muscle tone, and spatiotemporal gait were evaluated. [Results] The results showed that the dynamic balance and muscle tone was significantly more improved after the intervention compared to before in the VRAE group (dynamic balance: 5.50±2.57; muscle tone: 0.90±0.39), and the improvements were more significant than those in the control (dynamic balance: 1.22±2.05; muscle tone: 0.10±0.21). Spatiotemporal gait measures were significantly more increased in the paretic limb after the intervention compared to before in the VRAE group and the improvements were more significant than those in the control group. [Conclusion] This study demonstrated that virtual reality-based ankle exercise effectively improves the dynamic balance, muscle tone, and gait ability of stroke patients.

[Purpose] This study sought to determine the effects of brain-computer interface-based functional electrical stimulation (BCI-FES) on brain activation in patients with stroke. [Subjects] The subjects were randomized to in a BCI-FES group (n=5) and a functional electrical stimulation (FES) group (n=5). [Methods] Patients in the BCI-FES group received ankle dorsiflexion training with FES for 30 minutes per day, 5 times under the brain-computer interface-based program. The FES group received ankle dorsiflexion training with FES for the same amount of time. [Results] The BCI-FES group demonstrated significant differences in the frontopolar regions 1 and 2 attention indexes, and frontopolar 1 activation index. The FES group demonstrated no significant differences. There were significant differences in the frontopolar 1 region activation index between the two groups after the interventions. [Conclusion] The results of this study suggest that BCI-FES training may be more effective in stimulating brain activation than only FES training in patients recovering from stroke.

Speech dialogue systems, such as Apple's “Siri,” have gradually become more widespread, and in the near future, a greater number of general users will have the opportunity to communicate with such systems. To facilitate this, it is necessary for the system to communicate more naturally with users, and to realize that both verbal and nonverbal information must be taken into consideration. In this research, using an available speech recognition platform, we have developed simple dialogue system that consider utterance timing and evaluated it. As a result, it is clarified that the mean error of generated pause duration is controlled within 20msec, and the proper fixed pause duration is turned to be 600msec in this system. Moreover, the evaluation of generative models of pause duration showed that the model that synchronized the utterance duration weakly or fixed pause duration (600msec) model tended to get best results.

細胞には異常を感知し、その細胞自身や生体の正常を保とうとする様々な生体防御機構が備わっている。細胞老化もそのような生体防御機構のひとつで、発がんの危険性のある損傷が細胞に加わった際に誘導される不可逆的細胞増殖停止であり、生来細胞に備わった重要な発癌防御機構である。しかし、自ら死滅するアポトーシスとは異なり、細胞老化を起こすと、生体内において長期間生き続ける可能性がある。最近、生き残った老化細胞から、様々な炎症性サイトカインや細胞外マトリクス分解酵素といった多くのタンパクが産生・分泌されることが明らかになり、この現象はSASP(senescence-associated secretory phenotype)と呼ばれている。今回我々は、肥満にともなう肝臓がんモデルにおいて、肝臓の間質に存在する肝星細胞が細胞老化とSASPを起こし、肝がんに促進的ながん微小環境を形成することを見出した。さらに肝星細胞の細胞老化は肥満により増加した腸内細菌が産生する2次胆汁酸のひとつ、デオキシコール酸により促進されることを示した。

唾液は、血液に比し、非浸襲、安全に採取でき、特にストレス研究において注目されている。唾液ストレスマーカーとして、α-アミラーゼ活性やクロモグラニンAが知られているが、これらの研究は急性期ストレスに限られ、長期的ストレス状態緩和での研究はほとんどなされていない。今回、海岸ウォーキングストレス緩和法について検討した。唾液アミラーゼ活性、血圧測定、ストレス心理テストをウォーキング前後で実施した。約40名の唾液サンプルのうち、アミラーゼの活性がウォーキング後に低下していた3サンプルについて、解析を試みた。唾液アミラーゼ分子について抗体を用いウェスタンブロッティング、ドットブロット分析を行った。これらの結果から、アミラーゼ活性の減少は、唾液腺からの分泌低下というより、別の因子による可能性が示唆された。現在、これらバイオマーカーに関してプロテオーム解析を継続中である。

The vertebrate fossil localities of the Chorora Formation, Ethiopia, comprise one of only a few sub-Saharan African paleontological research areas that illuminate Late Miocene African mammalian and primate evolution. Field work at Chorora since 2007 has resulted in the establishment of new vertebrate fossil localities and a revised chronostratigraphic framework. The new Chorora Formation fossils include the earliest known records of Cercopithecinae, Hippopotaminae, and Leporidae in Africa. Two lineages of hipparionins are recognized at Chorora, a larger and smaller morph, forming potential phyletic links between the earlier Samburu Hills hipparionins and later Eurygnathohippus turkanensis and E. feibeli from Lothagam, Kenya. The Chorora colobines are larger than the >9 Ma Microcolobus and morphologically conservative with only moderate molar cusp notches. The Chorora cercopithecines represent the earliest documented occurrence of the subfamily.

Preparation of Microtubular cell using doped lanthanum gallate (LSGM) electrolyte with a dip coating and co-sintering process was studied. In order to suppress Ni diffusion from Ni-based anode substrate to LSGM electrolyte layer, Ti added La-doped ceria (Ti-LDC) was inserted as buffer layer. The amount of Ni diffused in LSGM electrolyte was investigated by EDX analysis as a function of sintering temperatures. It was found that sintering at 1350°C is suitable from the sintering density and the Ni diffusion. The cell sintered at 1350°C exhibited the higher power density than that of the conventional LSGM micro-tubular cell, even though a small amount of Ni diffusion was still observed at the Ti-LDC buffer layer/LSGM electrolyte interface. The micro-tubular cell with around 50 µm thickness showed the open circuit potential higher than 1.0 V and the maximum power density of 0.69, 0.31 and 0.12 W/cm2 at 700, 600 and 500°C, respectively, were achieved.

An ionic liquid (IL) composed of 9–anthracene carboxylate anion and ammonium cation possessing three diethylene glycol chains shows photo–triggered dimerization of anthracence chromophores. It causes segregation and crystallization of protonated 9–anthracene carboxylic acid dimer, which is associated with the concurrent liberation of the free amine in the IL. This work provides a new molecular design for photoresponsive ILs, whose first application for site–selective photo–patterning is demonstrated.

We describe the in situ synthesis of the covalent organic framework-5 (COF-5) on the surfaces of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphenes having homogeneous CNT@COF-5 core–shell structures using a sonochemical reaction in one pot. CNT@COF-5 was found to show better CO2 adsorption than the pristine COF-5.

Akabira Colliery has been opend since 1938. The mine has many minable coal seams and is recentry extracting six seams, of them. The seams incline steeply toward syncline axis which runs across the central part of the mine from south to north. The mine has continued to product annualy washing coal from 1Mt to 2Mt since 1960's on a condition that there were mining trouble and safty caused by many faults and a lot of methane gas flow.In 1986, a change of coal situation that a demand of domestic coal took a sudden turn for the decrease because on an amendment of coal policy in Japan made Akabira Colliery determine to improve the basic structure of mining and safty. As the result, the structure of ventilation and transportation was simplified and made more efficient. And mining inside the shaft saftypillar has become a necessity. Heavy mechanised mining system replaced manual one. Akabira Colliery has become a new mine and come to be able to continue production in spite of severe situiation of domestic coal. Since the shaft is apt to be influenced or possibly damaged by ground movements, the prediction of shaft behavior due to mining, the monitoring of shaft deformations, and the repair of shaft damage should be executed as precisely as possible.This report shows experience of a drastic remodeling of mining structure and safty one which was carried out at Akabira Colliery from 1986 to 1994.

Mutations in the breast cancer susceptibility gene BRCA2 leading to the failure of interactions with the recombinase RAD51 are associated with an increased risk of cancer in humans. This interaction depends on the eight BRC repeat (BRC1–8) sequences in BRCA2. We previously reported that canine BRC3 has two polymorphisms (T1425P and K1435R) influencing the interaction with RAD51, and 1435R was identified in mammary tumor dog samples. In this study, we investigated the sequence variations of BRC3 and 4 in 236 dogs of five breeds. Allele frequencies of 1425P and 1435R were 0.063 and 0.314, respectively, and there was no other polymorphism in the sequenced region. A mammalian two-hybrid assay using BRC3–4 sequences demonstrated that 1425P allele reduced the binding strength with RAD51 but 1435R had no effect. These results may provide an insight into the functions of not only individual but also multiple BRC repeats of BRCA2 in dogs.

近年,蛍光イメージングの発展に伴い,組織・細胞・細胞小器官・分子の動態や局在を容易に推定できるようになった.しかし,各組織・細胞にどのような形態のオルガネラが存在し,どのような状態で分布しているか超微形態レベルでの実体を把握するには,未だに透過電子顕微鏡(TEM)による観察が必須である.我々は,組織や細胞などのTEM像を広域に渡って自動撮影するシステムと,撮影したTEM像をつなぎ合わせ1枚の高解像度TEM写真を取得するプログラムを組み合わせた「広域TEM像自動取得システム」を開発した.本システムを用いて,植物組織や培養細胞などの数万枚のTEM像を自動撮影し,結合させることで,ギガピクセルクラスの写真の取得に成功している.さらに,試料を瞬時に凍結する高圧凍結技法により,広域超薄切片の作製に取り組み,動的なオルガネラの分布を広域に渡り把握することに成功している.本稿では,広域TEM像自動取得システムの原理と,高圧凍結技法で作製した超薄切片から画像取得した結果を中心に紹介する.

A compact TiO2 interlayer between FTO and perovskite in planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells is essential for effective charge extraction and minimized recombination. The electrical property of the interface of the perovskite layer with the compact TiO2 layer is thus important for achieving high power conversion efficiency in the perovskite solar cells. The motivation for the present study was to improve cell performance by improving the property of the TiO2/perovskite interface. Interestingly, a remarkable enhancement in cell efficiency was achieved by treatment of the compact TiO2 layer with TiCl4 and UV(O3).

The objectives of this study were to survey clinics’ guidance about recommended fasting duration (FD) prior to lipoprotein analysis, and to characterize lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations in obese and overweight dogs categorized on the basis of the 5-point body condition score (BCS) scale. A dataset was created from lipoprotein analysis medical records of 1,538 dogs from 75 breeds in 354 clinics from 2012 to 2013. A phone survey was conducted to obtain the clinics’ FD. Two-level linear mixed-effects models were applied to the data. Over 50% of the clinics said they recommended fasting for 12 hr or more. Dogs in clinics with FD 12 hr or more had lower chylomicron triglyceride concentrations than those in clinics with FD less than 8 hr (P=0.05). Mean (± SEM) BCS at sampling was 3.7 ± 0.02. Obese and overweight dogs had higher very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) and high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations than ideal dogs (P<0.05), but no such difference was found for low density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations (P≥0.07). Across all BCS, as dog age rose from 0 to 8 years old, HDL cholesterol concentrations decreased by 13.5 mg/dl, whereas VLDL triglyceride concentrations increased by 81.7 mg/dl (P<0.05). In conclusion, FD of 8 hr or less may affect lipoprotein lipid concentrations. Obese and overweight dogs were characterized as having high VLDL and HDL cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations.
