Immunotherapy for cancer is a forthcoming therapeutic option in cancer treatment. A variety of approaches, including adoptive cell transfer, adjuvant therapy, and monoclonal antibody therapy, are currently used as complementary or alternative cancer treatments. Since immunity against tumors is established as a result of complex interactions among tumors and immune cells, a theoretical framework to elucidate the dynamics of tumor killing by immune cells initiated by clinical intervention needs to be developed. We construct a simple mathematical model that describes the killing of tumors by T cells. We focus on a mathematical characterization of the effect of adoptive cell transfer therapy, the injection of a patient's own ex vivo activated T cells to initiate tumor immunity. On the basis of rigorous mathematical analyses and numerical computations, we provide biological interpretations for the possible outcomes of adoptive cell transfer under three different scenarios in terms of proliferation. In our modeling framework, adoptive cell transfer therapy can be understood as a driving force that potentially operates to shift the state of an immune response from inactive to active. On the other hand, our modeling framework suggests the possibility that a tumor can exploit a self-augmenting proliferation of T cells mediated by autocrine/paracrine signaling as an escape strategy from an immune response.

Recently the number of museum for manga culture has been increasing in Japan. When manga is regarded only as visual culture, and is exhibited, the building type of museum can be useful space to show pictures of manga. But manga is also linier media people read individually, like books in a library. In this situation, Kyoto International Manga Museum may be regarded as one of the “successful” manga museum in Japan, because this architecture has both spatial aspects of museum and library. In this paper, it will be discussed what is the museum building adopted to manga, comparing 3 museums or libraries for manga culture - Kyoto International Manga Museum, The Osamu Tezuka Manga Museum, and Hiroshima City Manga Library.

Canine epididymal sperm was collected from the cauda epididymis using two different methods (flushing and mincing) to compare the qualities (the percentage of progressively motile, viable, morphologically abnormal, immature and intact acrosomes) before and after freezing and thawing. No significant difference was noted in the quality of the cauda epididymal sperm immediately after collection and after freezing-thawing between the collection methods, although the mean levels of sperm quality with the flushing method were slightly better than that of the mincing methods. The flushing method is simple and free of blood contamination, although the vas deferens was too small to be perfused in only one dog, and our results suggest that the flushing method is preferable to the mincing method for collecting sperm from the canine cauda epididymis.

We examined the effects of chicken egg hydrolysate (also known as "bone peptide" or BP) on bone metabolism in 5- to 8-month-old orchidectomized dogs. The bone formation marker serum bone alkaline phosphatase (BAP) and the bone resorption marker urine deoxypyridinoline (DPD) were used as indicators to measure changes in bone metabolism. The following results were observed that Serum BAP was higher in dogs fed BP-enriched food throughout the clinical investigation. Serum BAP was statistically significantly higher in dogs fed BP-enriched food than in dogs fed non-BP-enriched food at 2 months after orchidectomy. This suggests that BP promoted bone formation immediately after orchidectomy.

症例は60歳台,男性.多発性骨髄腫にて加療中.発熱,腹痛にて受診,腹部CTにてS状結腸憩室穿孔による腹腔内膿瘍と診断した.経皮的ドレナージが奏功するも腹痛は持続,人工肛門の適応と考えたが,全身状態から手術は困難であった.そこで,経皮的内視鏡的盲腸瘻造設術施行後,バルーン拡張を加え,瘻孔にシリコン性開創器を挿入し人工肛門の代替機能を有する盲腸瘻を作製した.一連の手技にて大きな合併症は認めず,一定の効果を得ることができた.

1998年12月にバングラデシュで採集されたカブトガニ Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda の毒性とその毒成分を調べた. 卵巣, 精巣, 内臓に毒性が認められたが, その毒力はすべて10MU/g以下であった (卵巣において最高値7.4MU/g). 抽出した毒を限外ろ過並びに活性炭, Bio-Gel P-2, Bio-Rex70のクロマトグラフィーにより精製した. 部分精製毒をHPLC, TLC, 電気泳動, 1H-NMRで分析した結果, カブトガニの毒はテトロドトキシン (TTX) であることが明らかになった. これはバングラデシュ産カブトガニの毒性及び毒成分に関する初めての報告である.

タイ国アンダマン海沿岸において多大な津波被害をこうむったNam Khem平野において,上陸した津波の挙動を明らかにし,津波の流動と地形および地形変化との関係について検討した.低地部における津波の挙動は基本的には流れの方向の異なる押し波と引き波の組み合わせで説明されるが,個々の地点では低地の微地形の存在が大きく影響している.とくに,一部では上陸した押し波と廃土の盛土斜面に乗り上げた後の引き波が同方向に流れており,逆の方向性を持つ押し波と引き波の見られる多くの地域とは異なった特徴が見られた.また,津波堆積物の分布は,津波の流動が集中する部分で厚くなる傾向が見られたほか,堤間低地の部分で厚く,浜堤列の発達と密接に関係している.

要旨:肺動脈原発腫瘍は極めて稀な疾患であり,未治療の場合は予後1.5 カ月ともいわれる悪性の疾患である.症例は62 歳女性.咳嗽と血痰を主訴に受診.造影CT で肺動脈肉腫と診断,左右肺動脈はほぼ腫瘤に占拠され突然死の可能性が高いと判断し手術適応とした.麻酔導入後に心停止となり,緊急開胸し人工心肺を開始,主肺動脈から右肺動脈に嵌頓した腫瘍を摘出,肺動脈は馬心膜で再建した.左肺気管支の断端の確保も可能であり人工心肺離脱後に左肺全摘を施行し腫瘍を完全に摘出した.病理組織より左肺動脈内膜肉腫と診断,腫瘍断端は陰性であった.術後補助化学療法については明確なプロトコールがないことより選択しなかった.現在術後36 カ月が経過しているが,再発を認めず外来で経過観察中である.左肺動脈原発血管内膜肉腫に対して,肺動脈再建・左肺全摘術を行い術後36 カ月の生存期間を得た.肺動脈原発血管内膜肉腫の予後改善のためには,完全切除をめざした積極的な手術が有効と考えられた.

Medical data mining has great potential for exploring the hidden patterns in the data sets of the medical domain. These patterns can be utilized for clinical diagnosis. However, the available raw medical data are widely distributed, heterogeneous in nature, and voluminous. These data need to be collected in an organized form. This collected data can be then integrated to form a hospital information system. Data mining technology provides a user-oriented approach to novel and hidden patterns in the data. Data mining and statistics both strive towards discovering patterns and structures in data. Statistics deals with heterogeneous numbers only, whereas data mining deals with heterogeneous fields. We identify a few areas of healthcare where these techniques can be applied to healthcare databases for knowledge discovery. In this paper we briefly examine the impact of data mining techniques, including artificial neural networks, on medical diagnostics.

The availability of the Internet has provided unprecedented opportunities for both data compilers and users. With respect to materials data, this paper explores: how do we know what is available? how can data be accessed, interpreted, exchanged? what novel modes of presentation are now available? what organizations are active in this field and what are their programs? what improvements are needed? where do we go from here and how? Examples will be illustrated of specific materials databases available on the Internet from a variety of materials data fields, e.g. fundamental data, engineering design properties, environmental data, and materials safety data. While there is no question that large and widely varied bodies of data are accessible on the Internet, significant improvements are needed promptly. The paper concludes by summarizing these problems and possible means for their alleviation.

症例は70歳男性. 平成12年2月, 胸部不快感および持続する右胸部痛を認めたため近医を受診し右肺梗塞の診断で線溶療法を中心とする加療するも軽快せず, 精査加療目的にて当院に紹介された. CTおよびMRIにて一部肺動脈壁外に浸潤する右主肺動脈をほぼ完全に占拠した陰影を認め, Gaシンチグラフィーでは右肺門部に集積像を認めた. 肺動脈造影では右主肺動脈をほぼ閉塞する球状かつ辺縁平滑な腫瘤影を認め, 右内胸動脈および右気管支動脈造影では, 腫瘍の部位に一致して腫瘍濃染像を認めた. 肺動脈造影時に施行した吸引組織診で血管肉腫と診断された. 他の全身検索では転移巣を認めず, 胸骨正中切開によるアプローチで右肺全摘術及び縦隔リンパ節隔清術を施行した. 術後病理組織所見では肺動脈原発のintimal sarcomaと診断され, 右下葉に肺内転移を認めた. 現在術後10ケ月経過するが, 再発の徴候はない.以上, きわめて稀な右主肺動脈原発肉腫を経験した. 文献上術前に診断しえた本邦5例目の症例であるので報告した.

本研究の目的は, スポーツ系部活参加の効果を, Nicholls (1992) の目標理論の枠組みにより, 明らかにすることであった。そのため, スポーツ系部活に参加する高校生 (部活群) 231名と, 部活に参加しない高校生 (非部活群) 200名とを対象に, 学業の目標志向性および適応 (無気力感・授業満足感) を測定し, 比較検討を行った。その結果, 部活群は非部活群に比べて, 課題志向性 (個人の能力の発達を目標とする志向性) および協同性 (仲間と協力することを目標とする志向性) が高いことがわかった。そして部活群は非部活群に比べて, 無気力感3因子のうちの自己不明瞭感が低く, 授業満足感が高いことから, 適応が良好であることがわかった。さらに, 部活群・非部活群ともに, 課題志向性が高いことは低い無気力感を説明することが, 一方授業満足感については説明できないことが明らかとなった。従って, スポーツ系部活は高校生の目標志向性および適応に対して概ね肯定的効果があることが明らかとなった。しかし, その効果は目標志向性の内容および適応の指標により異なるメカニズムをもつことが示唆された。
