Using a system analysis code, plasma parameter ranges required for a Tokamak reactor to generate net electric power (Penet) were investigated. The investigation revealed that in order for a Tokamak to produce a net electric power of 0 MW under foreseeable engineering conditions, it is required to achieve simultaneously the following ranges of parameters, i.e., normalized beta value 1.2 ≤ βN ≤ 2.7, confinement improvement factor for H-mode scaling 0.8 ≤ HH, and the ratio of Greenwald density limit 0.4 ≤ fnGW ≤ 1.1, for a major radius R ≤ 8.5 m. It also revealed that a reactor to produce a net electric power of 1,000 MW requires the simultaneous achievement of βN ≥ 3.0, HH ≥ 0.9 and fnGW ≥ 0.9.

In this paper, a stomach content analysis of frilled shark Chlamydoselachus anguineus is presented based on 139 specimens caught incidentally by sergestid shrimp midwater trawling or bottom gill-net fishing conducted in Suruga Bay from 1984 to 1988. The food items of this shark were mostly decapodan cephalopods and fishes, which were found at the frequencies of 60.5% and 10.5%, respectively among the stomachs containing food. Food items found in the stomach, except for two cases of common squid Todarodes pacificus were digested to such an extent that it was not possible to identify the original shape. Therefore, species identification of decapodan cephalopods was performed by their beaks. These included bathypelagic species as well as epipelagic species. The empty stomach rate of specimens examined was 73.4% showing an extremely high level as compared with other deep-water sharks.

The fruit juice of black currant was found to contain a polysaccharide-rich substance, which was designated cassis polysaccharide (CAPS), with macrophage-stimulating activity. Especially, its interleukin (IL)-1β-inducing activity was remarkably high, compared with other fruit juice preparations. CAPS was found to consist of rhamnose, mannose, arabinose, galactose, xylose, and glucose in a molar ratio of 11.3:0.9:54.1:29.8:2.0:1.9. CAPS turned out to be partitioned into a soluble component (CAPS-l.m.) and a precipitable component (CAPS-h.m.) with mean MWs of 80,000 and 600,000 respectively in 45% (v/v) ethanol solution. At least in vitro, CAPS-l.m. rather than CAPS-h.m. appeared to play an important role in macrophage activation. Oral administration of black currant juice and CAPS to Ehrlich carcinoma-bearing mice retarded the growth of the solid tumor by 45% and 51% respectively. CAPS administration had a stimulatory effect on the release of IL-2, IL-10, interferon-γ, and IL-4 from splenocytes in comparison with PBS treatment in tumor-bearing mice. The IL-4 level was, however, still lower than that exhibited by a group of normal mice. CAPS showed a certain cytotoxicity directly against tumor cells.

外傷性てんかんは比較的良好な経過をとり, 抗けいれん剤の投与にて, コントロールされるのが通常である。しかし時に難治性てんかんへと移行し, そのコントロールに苦慮する場合がある。われわれは, 乳幼児期の外傷後にてんかん発作が生じ, 難治性となって, 現在も多種多剤の抗けいれん剤の投与にもかかわらず, 発作のコントロールが不十分である症例を対象として, そのMRIの所見につきCT所見と対比しつつ検討した。これらの症例ではMRIの施行前にCTが行われ, その所見が判明しており, そして脳波上も患側半球で広範に出現する棘波が認められている。また臨床的に片側けいれんや自動症が主たる発作内容で, 粘着気質, 易怒性などの人格変化, 知能の発育障害も認められている。MRIではCTの変化に加え, さらに広範な萎縮性変化と患側側頭葉の発育障害が存在しているのが認められた。

Geoconservation for geographical and geological phenomena is the most important concept associated with a geopark scheme. However, there is not enough discussion on geopark activities in Japan. Japanese Earth scientists have acted individually to conserve the natural environment, but large-scale conservation projects have not been carried out as activities of research organizations of academic societies. One of the contributions the Earth sciences have made to society is to report the scientific value of regional natural environments. Japanese Earth scientists should make detailed inventories of landforms, strata, and soil and evaluate them. Earth scientists will be able to contribute to conserving nature and sustainable development of regions through these activities. The RIGS system of the United Kingdom is a good model.

ヒトの話しことばにみられる連続的で変化に富んだ音声は,他の霊長類の音声とは異なり,言語で整理された多種多様な情報のすばやい効率的な伝達を可能にする。ヒトは,ヒト以外の哺乳類とは異なり,脳で作られた音声計画に合わせて音声器官の運動を随意に制御し,声道形状を的確なかたちへと連続的に変化させて,話しことばをつくりだす。古人類学的研究では,その話しことばに関連すると考えられる形態学的特徴を探し出し,その特徴に関する古人類の比較形態学的分析を通じて,言語の起源が論じられてきた。一方,ヒト以外の霊長類における音声器官の比較形態学的研究や音声の生物音響学的研究の進展は,話しことばの生物学的基盤は,ヒト系統以前から,それとは関係のない別々の適応を経て現れたというモザイク進化モデルを描き始めた。今後,両研究アプローチによる知見の蓄積とともに,それらが運動学的分析のもとに統合されることを期待したい。それにより,話しことばの解剖学的基盤の何がヒト特異的であるのか,あらためて浮き彫りになるだろう。その実証的知見が古人類学的研究へ還元されるとき,話しことばを含む言語の長い進化プロセスの解明への新たな一歩がふみ出されるに違いない。

To investigate the long-term effect of feeding royal jelly (RJ) on the testicular function, 32-week old male golden hamsters were fed diet containing RJ at doses of 0 μg/g diet (control), 50 μg/g diet or 500 μg/g diet for 12 weeks. At the end of the experiment, the hamsters were assessed for testicular function in terms of the amounts of intra-testicular free testosterone (TS) and histopathological changes. RJ diet groups showed higher TS levels and more intensive spermatogenesis than the control group in a dose-dependent manner. The intensity of spermatogenesis and TS levels in the 500 μg of RJ/g diet group showed significant differences of p < 0.01 and p < 0.05, respectively, when compared with those in the control group. These results indicate that the long-term feeding of RJ inhibits the age-associated decline in the testicular function of male hamsters.

The northern snakehead Channa argus, native to China, Russia and Korea, is currently found widespread throughout Japan following its original introduction during the 1920s. A parasitological study of 10 snakeheads fished from the Fushinogawa River running through Yamaguchi City, Japan, detected 2–101 (average, 23.7) metacercariae per 100 g of trunk muscle from each fish. The trematode was identified as metacercariae of Posthodiplostomum sp. (Strigeidida: Diplostomidae) morphologically and characterized genetically based on the ribosomal RNA gene (rDNA). Phylogenetic trees were constructed on the basis of either the 18S, ITS or 28S region of rDNA to assess the relationship among members of the family Diplostomidae. The addition of genetic data from more diplostomid taxa, particularly Posthodiplostomum cuticola recorded from a variety of freshwater fish in Eurasia, would facilitate the precise identification of the present species.

The glycoprotein (GP) of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV), the prototype arenavirus, is a promising envelope protein of lentiviral pseudotype vectors for gene therapy. The distribution of dystroglycan, a known receptor for LCMV, cannot explain the narrow tropism of LCMV-GP-pseudotypes. Here, we examined whether infection of LCMV-GP-pseudotypes was affected by the expression of four cell surface molecules—Axl and Tyro3 (from the TAM family) and DC-SIGN and LSECtin (from the C-type lectin family)—that are known receptors of Lassa virus, another arenavirus. All four molecules enhanced LCMV-GP-pseudotype infection of cells. These results help explain the tropism of LCMV-GP-pseudotypes and further our understanding of LCMV infection in animals.

The objective of the study was to examine changes of intraocular pressure (IOP) undergoing anesthesia in Rhesus Macaques (Macaca mulatta) with Laser-induced Ocular Hypertension. Twenty male rhesus macaques (hypertensive glaucoma eye in OD; normal eye in OS) between 6 and 20 years of age were used for the study. The monkeys were anesthetized with ketamine hydrochloride (10 mg/kg intramuscularly) and 1% isoflurane and then IOP in both eyes was measured by a single investigator using a calibrated TonopenTM applanation tonometer (Mentor, Norwell, MA, U.S.A.). The mean IOP with ketamine anesthesia was 36.70 ± 12.04 (right eye: OD) and 15.88 ± 2.84 (left eye: OS). The mean IOP with isoflurane anesthesia was 19.98 ± 6.67 (right eye: OD) and 15.32 ± 2.15 (left eye: OS). Undergoing isoflurane anesthesia, the IOP of OD was significantly decreased. Conclusively, careful examination of IOP is required to prevent unexpected contraindication on glaucoma patient with isoflurane anesthesia.

Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is the primary causative agent of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome. Two major PCV2 genotypes, PCV2a and PCV2b, have been identified. To explore the prevalence of different subgroups of PCV2 in Taiwan, 37 PCV2 isolates collected during 2002–2011 were analyzed. The genotypes of the PCV2 isolates collected before 2007 belonged to either PCV2a or PCV2b. However, all of the isolates collected after 2008 were PCV2b. Most of isolates obtained since 2008 have been classified into a novel genotype within subgroup of PCV2b based on complete ORF2 sequence analysis. Moreover, analysis of the PCV2 isolates from the same pig farm but from different years revealed that the viruses shifted from a PCV2b genotype to a novel subgroup of the PCV2b genotype. Collectively, PCV2b was the dominant PCV2 genotype in Taiwan currently and that the viruses have shifted into a new emerging subgroup within the PCV2b genotype.

From 2001 to 2010, 17,392 Japanese cats were examined for feline coronavirus (FCoV) antibodies. Seroprevalence of purebreds (66.7%) was higher than random breds (31.2%). Seroprevalence increased greatly in purebreds by aged three months, while random breds did not fluctuate greatly with aging, indicating cattery environments can contribute to FCoV epidemic. Purebreds from northern regions of Japan were likely to be sero-positive (76.6% in Hokkaido, 80.0% in Tohoku), indicating cattery cats in cold climates might be more closely confined. Among purebreds, American Shorthair, Himalayan, Oriental, Persian, and Siamese were at low seroprevalence, while American Curl, Maine Coon, Norwegian Forest Cat, Ragdoll, and Scottish Fold were at high seroprevalence. There would be also breed-related differences in Japan, similar to the previous studies in Australia.

We compared wedged hepatic venous pressure (WHVP), splenic pulp pressure (SPP) and trans-splenic portal vein pressure (TSPVP) in healthy dogs. We found that portal blood pressure could be measured in dogs using any of these techniques. The WHVP, SPP and TSPVP were 7.8 ± 1.0, 6.2 ± 0.8 and 6.8 ± 1.2 mmHg, respectively. Measuring SPP using ultrasound is most simple and minimally invasive, and it might be useful for evaluating portal hypertension in dogs with liver diseases.

本研究では,渡り性の水鳥類の全国的な渡来地について,規模の大きな渡来地や希少種の渡来地が保護区域に指定されているか,日本に渡来するガンカモ類やシギ・チドリ類の生息に各渡来地がどのように寄与しているのかを解析し,重要な渡来地でありながら保護区域に指定されていない場所の抽出を行なった.河川湖沼の鳥の調査サイト84カ所のうち,35.7%が特別地域,22.6%が普通地域,41.7%が未指定であった.干潟の鳥の調査サイト152カ所のうち,10.0%が特別地域,24.7%が普通地域,66.7%が未指定地域であった.個体数,ラムサール基準値(一部フライウェイ基準値)を超えた種数に着目すると,河川湖沼の鳥が多数訪れるサイトは比較的保護されているが,干潟の鳥が多数訪れる場所については保護指定が遅れている状況が示された.また全ての渡来地を希少種の渡来数に対する寄与率で順位づけしたところ,希少種が多数渡来するサイトは限定的であり,全体的に渡来数数の多いサイトが少数あり,渡来数の少ないサイトが残り多数を占めるという傾向がみられた.したがって,ガンカモ類,シギ・チドリ類といった渡り性の水鳥が集団で生息する特性も考慮すると,保護区による保護が効果的であるといえる.今回検出された寄与率の高かったサイト(大授搦,曽根干潟,泡瀬干潟,宇佐海岸,大阪北港南地区,白川河口など)は優先的に保護区域に指定される必要があるだろう.
