Dichotic listening studies have shown that information relevant to listeners, such as their own name, can be recognized even when presented to the unattended ear. Here, we used a dichotic listening paradigm to explore whether Japanese listeners could identify their name in the unattended ear even when sensory information was incomplete. The results showed that Japanese listeners with family names of 3, 4, or 5 morae — a speech unit equivalent to a syllable in English — recognized their name in about 20–60% of the trials even when the first or the last mora of the name was omitted. The data further showed a name-final effect under the 4- and 5-morae conditions: name recognition significantly decreased when the last mora of the listener’s name was omitted as compared with the omission of the first mora. A possible explanation for these results is that self-relevant information, even when incomplete, automatically draws attention to the supposedly unattended ear and that the listener’s recognition of the information is more robust when its end part is presented.

To investigate the proton transport properties of the Nafion thin films on MgO(100) substrates, impedance measurements of the 60 and 400 nm thick thin films were carried out. The proton conductivity of two thin films were quite lower values compared to that of the commercial Nafion membrane, and the thickness dependence of the proton conductivity was also observed. To investigate in-plane and out-of-plane molecular vibrations in an identical 400 nm thick film of Nafion on the MgO(100) substrate, an infrared p-polarized multiple-angle incidence resolution spectrometry (p-MAIRS) technique was carried out. The in-plane spectrum showed well-known spectrum, however, the out-of-plane spectrum was quite different compared to the in-plane spectrum. The largely different shapes of the spectra clearly indicate that the 400 nm thick film of Nafion has an anisotropic molecular structure. [DOI: 10.1380/ejssnt.2012.114]

シリカをシリコーンポリマーでコーティングした後,二重結合を有する各種化合物を白金触媒下で反応させることにより,ポリマーコート型カラム充填剤を合成した.ポリマーコーティングは,シリカの細孔をつぶすことなく,約7 Åの薄膜で行われていた.本充填剤は,シリカ系カラム充填剤の特長である分離性能をもつと同時にアルカリ性条件下でも使用可能であり,シリカ系とポリマー系充填剤の両方の利点を有していた.またポリマーコーティングは,残存シラノール基の影響を最小限に抑制し,ポリマーコーティング量とC18導入量を最適化したポリマーコート型C18充填剤は,メタノール及びアセトニトリル系の中性移動相下においても,強塩基性化合物であるアミトリプチリンのピーク形状は良好であった.ポリマーコート型カラム充填剤はシリカ基材の表面の活性をコーティングによって不活性化しているため,一般的な化学結合型カラム充填剤と比較して,ロット再現性も良好であった.

11歳の雌の柴犬が2ヵ月前からの頻回の嘔吐を主訴に当院を紹介来院した。初診時、ボディコンディションスコア(BCS):3/9、X線CT検査において胃の拡張と幽門部の胃壁の肥厚、内視鏡検査において幽門部の腫瘤病変が認められ、内視鏡下生検では胃腺癌が強く疑われた。内科的な入院管理の後、幽門部の腫瘤を含む遠位約1/3の胃と十二指腸を約1.5 cm切除し、ビルロート II法による消化管の再建を行った。手術によって摘出した腫瘤の病理組織学的診断は胃腺癌であった。症例は術後合併症や再発の兆候もなく、術後約7ヵ月の現在も良好に維持されており、QOLの向上のためにも、転移を示唆する所見がない症例では積極的な切除を試みることが重要であると考えられた。

ヘルニア内容が傍前立腺嚢胞であった会陰ヘルニアの症例(6歳、未去勢雄)に遭遇した。症例は直腸検査で会陰部に腫瘤を認め、超音波検査で腫瘤内の液体が確認された。手術時に会陰部の切開で被膜が露出し、多量の液体が排出された。摘出した被膜は病理組織学的検査で傍前立腺嚢胞と診断された。両疾患の併発は十分に考えられ、ヘルニア内容が傍前立腺嚢胞であることは稀であるが鑑別リストとして考慮する必要がある。

ミニチュア・ダックスフント,オス,12歳が,鼻稜部,体幹部,足根関節部の皮膚病変,腹部膨満と多飲多尿(192 ml/kg/day)を呈して来院した。ACTH刺激試験では,投与前のコルチゾール値が12.1 μg/dl,投与1時間後が68.4 μg/dlであった。下垂体依存性副腎皮質機能亢進症(PDH)と診断し,小分割照射(毎週1回[6 Gy],合計3回[18Gy])を実施した。飲水量は徐々に減少し,約1年後には85 ml/kg/dayとなり,被毛も改善した。ACTH刺激試験では,投与前が6.3 μg/dl,投与1時間後が36.1 μg/dlであった。ACTH試験では依然高値であったが,PDHに対する低線量小分割照射は,臨床症状の改善には有効である可能性が示唆された。

15週齢の雌のトイ・プードルにおいて,眼瞼および口吻の腫脹とびらんを中心とした皮膚病変と,混合ワクチン接種部位における限局性の腫脹と自壊が認められた。病理組織学的検査により,顔面は重度の毛包炎を特徴とする無菌性化膿性肉芽腫性皮膚炎が,自壊したワクチン接種部位は無菌性肉芽腫性脂肪織炎が認められた。検査結果および臨床経過から若年性無菌性肉芽腫性皮膚炎および無菌性脂肪織炎と診断した。両病変とも免疫抑制用量のプレドニゾロンによる治療が奏功した。

特発性好酸球性肉芽腫の猫55症例について後向き研究が行われた。初発年齢は,症例の93%で4歳以下であった。病変は主に口唇,大腿後縁または下顎に認められ,無症候性のことが多かった。症例の70%では丘疹-結節が,また症例の30%では線状病変が認められた。症例の78%では治療は行われず,中でも予後調査が可能であった症例(67%)では症状が自然寛解し,再発も認められなかった。

組織球性多核巨細胞(MHGC)は炎症性皮膚疾患に罹患した猫の皮膚生検標本において時折認められる。しかし,MHGCの出現率・出現細胞数や形態学的な型別に関する報告はない。そこで我々は,炎症性皮膚疾患に罹患した猫526例と健常な皮膚を有する33例の猫から採取した皮膚生検標本を用い,上述の点について検討した。その結果,炎症性皮膚疾患を伴う猫の7%(35/526例)で標本中にMHGCが認められた。肉芽腫性皮膚疾患におけるMHGCの出現率(32/125例)は,非肉芽腫性皮膚疾患における出現率(3/401例)と比べて有位に高値を示した(p<0.0001)。非感染性肉芽腫性皮膚疾患におけるMHGCの出現率(27/84例)は感染性肉芽腫性皮膚疾患(5/41例)と比べて有位に高値を示した(p=0.016)。MHGCの出現が見られた35例の全てにおいて,異物型MHGCが見られた。ラングハンス型MHGCが見られたのは,この35例中2例のみであった。健常な猫の皮膚ではMHGCは認められなかった。以上より,MHGCの出現数や形態学的型別には明らかな診断学的意義が認められないことが示された。

In this study, phase changes, catalytic active species that appeared at the phase change, and the corresponding water tolerance of samples obtained upon thermal treatment from K2CO3-supported microsized and nanosized sodalite as diesel-soot combustion catalyst are examined. We have shown the successful preparation of nepheline with water tolerance from sodalite as starting material. It is confirmed that the interaction between alkali metal carbonate and crystalline aluminosilicate is prerequisite for enhancing water tolerance of the catalytically active component, Na/K carbonate, located on the nepheline.

Plasma profiles of glucose, insulin and lipids were examined in the male WBN/Kob-Leprfa (fa/fa) rat, a new model of type 2 diabetes (T2D), in comparison with age-matched original male WBN/Kob (lean) rats. The fa/fa rats developed hypertriglycemia, obesity and hyperglycemia from 5, 7, and 9 weeks of age, respectively. Plasma insulin levels in fa/fa rats were significantly higher than those in lean rats at 5 weeks of age, but after 11 weeks of age gradually declined to the levels in lean rats. HOMA-IR, a measure of insulin resistance status, showed that fa/fa rats had insulin resistance. The fa/fa rat has the potential to become an important animal model of T2D with obesity.

Portal vein aneurysm (PVA) is a rare abnormal dilatation of the portal vein, which has not been reported in dogs. We describe the findings of ultrasound and computed tomography in a case of PVA in a young male toy poodle, with the final diagnosis established by explorative surgical observation. The dog had an aneurysmal fusiform dilatation in the extrahepatic portal vein with portal hypertension and multiple portsystemic shunts. This is the first report of canine PVA.

Humeral chondrosarcoma was found in an 18-year-old male Hokkaido brown bear (Ursus arctos yesoensis). Necropsy revealed a large firm mass under the left superficial pectoral muscle at the axillary region. The mass involved the left shoulder joint and peripheral muscles, and connected to the head of the humerus with osteolysis. Histopathologically, the mass was composed of irregularly shaped myxomatous to cartilaginous tumor lobules. The tumor cell showed moderate nuclear atypia with a relatively high mitotic index especially in the edges of the myxomatous lobules. The tumor cells were positively immunostained with vimentin and S-100 protein. Based on these findings, the tumors were diagnosed as chondrosarcoma. Metastases were found in the left axillary lymph node, lungs, liver and kidney.

The protein contents of diet meals containing various foods were calculated from the total nitrogen content using novel conversion factors that were suggested in our previous reports. Focusing on school lunch menus and convenience store lunch boxes, the total nitrogen contents in these foods were calculated by dividing the protein contents referring to the Standard Tables of Foods Composition in Japan by the traditional N : P factors. The total nitrogen content multiplied by the novel N : P factor was equal to the novel protein content.  The proportion of novel protein contents to the traditional protein contents was approximately 84%. On 11 school lunch menus, the equation between traditional protein contents and novel protein contents was the following : Novel protein contents=0. 878 × traditional protein contents–0. 937. The novel protein content of a convenience store lunch box could be estimated by this regression equation. The novel N : P factor, that is, the ratio of nitrogen contents to novel protein contents, for school lunch menus was 5. 16±0. 11 (mean±standard deviation). The N : P factors for two convenience store lunch boxes were 5. 15 and 5. 09. Therefore, the protein content of well-balanced meals should be calculated using the novel N : P factor of about 5. 2.  The results indicated that the novel calculation method for N : P factors could be applied to not only individual foods, but also to diet menus containing various foods. We conclude that this calculation method should be practical and suitable for the evaluation of the N : P factors.

This paper deals with experimental data and a predictive method of longitudinal shrinkage and bending distortion which are important in the development of the high accuracy production system of the large welding structures. The longitudinal shrinkage and bending distortion can be calculated from the inherent force, namely Tendon Force, which is related to the total of the inherent strain. First the experimental values of the longitudinal shrinkage, longitudinal bending distortion and the inherent strain were obtained under various welding conditions. Next, the theoretical equation was proposed to calculate the longitudinal shrinkage and bending distortion from the inherent strain. As the results, the validity of the theoretical equation on the longitudinal shrinkage and bending distortion is shown by the comparison between values predicted from inherent force and experimental values.

Previous report demonstrated that prokinetic agent mosapride has anti-ulcerogenic action in rat-indomethacin gastric mucosal injury model. Here, we assessed the prophylactic effect of mosapride on gastric mucosal injury and emptying disorder induced by prednisolone in dogs. Crossover study design was employed. Six healthy beagles were administered prednisolone alone (2 mg/kg, twice a day [BID] subcutaneously) and prednisolone with mosapride (1 mg/kg, BID, orally), followed by an interval of at least 6 weeks. In each treatment, gastric mucosal injury was scored endoscopically according to the modified Lanza scale, and gastric emptying was assessed with 13C-octanoic acid breath test. The incidence of gastrointestinal adverse events was also investigated. Coadministration of mosapride with prednisolone significantly (P<0.05) reduced the gastric mucosal injury score (mean ± SD, 17.67 ± 6.96), compared with that of prednisolone treatment alone (25.50 ± 13.03). Prednisolone treatment delayed the half-emptying time (184 ± 45 min) compared with that of controls (137 ± 19 min), and coadministration of mosapride improved this gastric-emptying delay (143 ± 29 min). Furthermore, the incidence of the gastrointestinal adverse event vomiting became less frequent upon coadministration with mosapride. In addition to its prokinetic action, our study suggests that mosapride has an anti-ulcerogenic action in dogs. The use of mosapride in combination with prednisolone is effective for attenuating prednisolone-induced gastrointestinal adverse events.

To evaluate people's opinions concerning the release of the Japanese Crested Ibis Nipponia nippon, a questionnaire was mailed throughout Sado City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan. The 1,000 target individuals were selected randomly from within the 20 to 79 year age group. Results from the 591 respondents indicated almost 74% to have appreciated the release, and only 26% have neither agreed nor disagreed. The most common reason people gave for their appreciation was “they have lived here”, though only 16% of the people had actually seen the Japanese Crested Ibis in the wild. Their concerns related to the release were related mainly toward the success of the release rather than to any harm the birds might cause to crops. Especially, they worried about the released Japanese Crested Ibis survival. These results may be affected by the media like TV. Many people treated Japanese Crested Ibis as a local symbol, or a symbol of nature, and only a few viewed the bird as a potentially commercial venurte. Similar results were obtained from a questionnaire on the Oriental Storks Ciconia boyciana in Toyooka City. The releases in the past have been done far from the villages. This Japanese Crested Ibis release is the second case done near the villages, just after the release of the Oriental Storks. The sequential research will be done to compare the two questionnaires relating to the Oriental Stork and the Japanese Crested Ibis.
