In order to investigate an association between residential radon exposure and risk of lung cancer, a case-control study was conducted in Misasa Town, Tottori Prefecture, Japan. The case series consisted of 28 people who had died of lung cancer in the years 1976-96 and 36 controls chosen randomly from the residents in 1976, matched by sex and year of birth. Individual residential radon concentrations were measured for 1 year with alpha track detectors. The average radon concentration was 46 Bq/m3 for cases and 51 Bq/m3 for controls. Compared to the level of 24 or less Bq/m3, the adjusted odds ratios of lung cancer associated with radon levels of 25-49, 50-99 and 100 or more Bq/m3, were 1.13 (95% confidence interval; 0.29-4.40), 1.23 (0.16-9.39) and 0.25 (0.03-2.33), respectively. None of the estimates showed statistical significance, due to small sample size. When the subjects were limited to only include residents of more than 30 years, the estimates did not change substantially. This study did not find that the risk pattern of lung cancer, possibly associated with residential radon exposure, in Misasa Town differed from patterns observed in other countries.

Small-angle scattering (SAS) is a powerful tool for the detailed structural analysis of objects at the nanometer scale. In contrast to techniques such as electron microscopy, SAS data are presented as reciprocal space information, which hinders the intuitive interpretation of SAS data. This study presents a workflow: (1) creating objects, (2) 3D scanning, (3) the representation of the object as point clouds on a laptop, (4) computation of a distance distribution function, and (5) computation of SAS, executed via the computer program Phone2SAS. This enables us to realize SAS and perform the interactive modeling of SAS of the object of interest. Because 3D scanning is easily accessible through smartphones, this workflow driven by Phone2SAS contributes to the widespread use of SAS. The application of Phone2SAS for the structural assignment of SAS to Y-shaped antibodies is reported in this study.

Background: To achieve early reperfusion therapy for ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), proper and prompt patient transportation and activation of the catheterization laboratory are required. We investigated the efficacy of prehospital 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) acquisition and destination hospital notification in patients with STEMI.Methods and Results: This is a systematic review of observational studies. We searched the PubMed database from inception to March 2020. Two reviewers independently performed literature selection. The critical outcome was short-term mortality. The important outcome was door-to-balloon (D2B) time. We used the GRADE approach to assess the certainty of the evidence. For the critical outcome, 14 studies with 29,365 patients were included in the meta-analysis. Short-term mortality was significantly lower in the group with prehospital 12-lead ECG acquisition and destination hospital notification than in the control group (odds ratio 0.72; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.61–0.85; P<0.0001). For the important outcome, 10 studies with 2,947 patients were included in the meta-analysis. D2B time was significantly shorter in the group with prehospital 12-lead ECG acquisition and destination hospital notification than in the control group (mean difference −26.24; 95% CI −33.46, −19.02; P<0.0001).Conclusions: Prehospital 12-lead ECG acquisition and destination hospital notification is associated with lower short-term mortality and shorter D2B time than no ECG acquisition or no notification among patients with suspected STEMI outside of a hospital.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) has occasionally occurred in people who have received coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines. Dysgeusia is rare symptom of GBS. We herein report a rare case of sensory ataxic GBS with dysgeusia just after the second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. Although autoantibodies against glycolipids were not detected, immunotherapy with intravenous immunoglobulin and methylprednisolone pulse therapy effectively ameliorated the symptoms. Our report suggests that the COVID-19 vaccine may induce various clinical subtypes of GBS, including a rare variant with sensory ataxia and dysgeusia.

The immuno-pharmacological profile of a novel immunosuppressive agent, FK-506 produced by a streptomycete, is presented here. We proceeded to test the effect of the agent on various in vitro immune systems. It showed that mixed lymphocyte reaction, cytotoxic T cell generation, the production of T cell-derived soluble mediators such as interleukin 2 (IL-2), interleukin 3 and gamma-interferon and the expression of the IL-2 receptor were suppressed by this agent. The IC50 values of FK-506 and ciclosporin (CS) in all tests were approximately 0.1nM and 10nM, respectively. Therefore, the novel agent, FK-506 suppressed in vitro immune systems at about hundred times lower concentration than CS.

In this paper, we develop two corpora for speech synthesis research. Thanks to improvements in machine learning techniques, including deep learning, speech synthesis is becoming a machine learning task. To accelerate speech synthesis research, we aim at developing Japanese voice corpora reasonably accessible from not only academic institutions but also commercial companies. In this paper, we construct the JSUT and JVS corpora. They are designed mainly for text-to-speech synthesis and voice conversion, respectively. The JSUT corpus contains 10 hours of reading-style speech uttered by a single speaker, and the JVS corpus contains 30 hours containing three styles of speech uttered by 100 speakers. This paper describes how we designed the corpora and summarizes the specifications. The corpora are available at our project pages.

In this study, we investigated the trophic interactions between the Japanese giant box jellyfish, Morbakka virulenta, and fish in the central part of the Seto Inland Sea, western Japan, in autumn and winter. Occurring in the surface waters at nighttime, these cubomedusae, regardless of their size (1.5 to 22.5 cm in bell height), were found to be piscivorous, feeding mainly on the Japanese anchovy, as shown by their stomach contents analysis. This finding was supported by a stable isotopic analysis and by an unchanged cnidome, irrespective of the bell height of medusae. Their nocturnal occurrence near the surface often took place around the slack tide, during which the medusae were foraging with tentacles fully extended. Other associations between the medusae and fish were also observed at this time: presumed commensalism with juvenile Japanese horse mackerel, and predation by black scraper.

A new species of flabelligerid polychaete, Lamispina ammophila sp. nov., is described from off the coast of Shimoda, Japan. The species can be discriminated from the other congeners by the following features: i) dorsal region of body being adhered to by sediment particles, ii) lamispines without accessory tooth, present from chaetiger 4 and succeeding chaetigers, and iii) cephalic cage 1.5–2.0 times as long as body width. A partial mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene sequence from the paratype is provided as a DNA barcode for the new species.

本研究ではCiNii のアクセスログに基づき、1) CiNii から連携する各本文提供サービスの利用の推移、2) 論文書誌データへのアクセスと、その後の各サービスへのリンクのクリック状況を分析した。その目的はCiNii と連携する各サービスがどのような文献需要に応えているかを明らかにすることである。結果から、本文提供元として最も利用されていたのはNII-ELS であるが、徐々に機関リポジトリの利用が増えていた。特に本文が利用される割合が高い一方、NII-ELS による文献提供数の少ない人社系・紀要論文の提供に機関リポジトリが大きな役割を果たしていた。

Gastrointestinal disorders after ingesting a sports drink were investigated during bicycle exercise. The experiment consisted of a preliminary exercise, a 10 min rest, and 30 min of exercise. Seven healthy untrained volunteers ingested either water or a sports drink based on highly branched cyclic dextrin (HBCD), commercially available dextrin of DE16 or glucose immediately after the preliminary exercise. The mean gastric emptying time after ingestion of the HBCD-based sports drink was significantly faster than that of the glucose-based drink. Gastrointestinal disorders were monitored by a questionnaire. The mean degree of subjective flatulence and the mean number of belches were few with the HBCD-based drink during exercise. When volunteers drank the sports drink based on 10% HBCD during bicycle exercise, they experienced few gastrointestinal disorders and consequently could continue the exercise comfortably with little fatigue.

Potamostoma shizunaiense gen. et sp. nov. (Nemertea: Hoplonemertea: Monostilifera) is described from the mouth of the River Shizunai, Hokkaido, Japan. This genus is readily distinguished from other monostiliferans by an oesophagus opening far anteriorly into the rhynchodaeum, a well developed excretory system extending the whole body length, terminals of the excretory collecting tubules situated between the body wall circular muscle layer and the dermis, and bilobed testes in males.

In the winter of 2021–2022, multiple subtypes (H5N8 and H5N1) of high pathogenicity avian influenza viruses (HPAIVs) were confirmed to be circulating simultaneously in Japan. Here, we phylogenetically and antigenically analyzed HPAIVs that were isolated from infected wild birds, an epidemiological investigation of affected poultry farms, and our own active surveillance study. H5 subtype hemagglutinin (HA) genes of 32 representative HPAIV isolates were classified into clade 2.3.4.4b lineage and subsequently divided into three groups (G2a, G2b, and G2d). All H5N8 HPAIVs were isolated in early winter and had HA genes belonging to the G2a group. H5N1 HPAIVs belong to the G2b and G2d groups. Although G2b viruses were widespread throughout the season, G2d viruses endemically circulated in Northeast Japan after January 2022. Deep sequence analysis showed that the four HPAIVs isolated at the beginning of winter had both N8 and N1 subtypes of neuraminidase genes. Environmental water-derived G2a HPAIV, A/water/Tottori/NK1201-2/2021 (H5N8), has unique polymerase basic protein 1 and nucleoprotein genes, similar to those of low pathogenicity avian influenza viruses (LPAIVs). These results indicate that multiple H5 HPAIVs and LPAIVs disseminated to Japan via transboundary winter migration of wild birds, and HPAIVs with novel gene constellations could emerge in these populations. Cross-neutralization test revealed that G2a H5N8 HPAIVs were antigenically distinct from a G2b H5N1 HPAIV, suggesting that antibody pressure in wild birds was involved in the transition of the HPAIV groups during the season.

将来の有人月面活動を目指した探査の重要課題の一つとして, 「月の極の水氷」の存否, その量の調査が挙げられる. 月の極に水氷が期待されるのは, 月に対して, いくつかの水の供給源が存在する可能性があり, 月面に供給された水が, 濃集し, かつまたは安定的に存在できる可能性が, 極低温域となる永久陰にあるからである. しかし, 隕石や彗星の落下衝突した際の衝撃加熱で失われることもあるだろう. 更に, 現在の永久陰は過去においては永久陰でなかった可能性が指摘されており, 地質学的に長期間永久陰となっていて水氷を集積できる場所は無いとも言われる. 実際, これまでの探査機による観測では, 水氷発見を報告するものがあるが, 月の極の水氷の存在について決定的証拠を出したといえるものがない. データや解釈を整理してみると, 数%もの「水氷」の存在というデータの解釈には多くの難点があるともいえる. 一方で, 太陽風起源の水素が月極域に打ち込まれ留まっている可能性もある. 最新の中性子分光計による計測結果だと, 最も濃集しているところ(40K以下の永久陰など)で470ppm程度と報告されているが, この水素濃集見積もりは(水の形を取るにしても)妥当なところではないかと思われる. 月は, 人類が宇宙へと活動の場を拡げていくときの橋頭堡で有り, その探査は重要不可欠である. だからこそ, 今後, 有人月面活動を目指した探査について議論, 企画していくうえで, 最新の科学的知見を十分に加味, 考慮した上で進めていくことが必要である.

Tiny annelids identified as the marine meiobenthic polychaete Dinophilus gyrociliatus (Schmidt, 1857) have been reported not only from shallow water sediments but also artificial environments such as experimental aquaria almost all around the world; the species has thus been regarded to show a cosmopolitan distribution. However, various types of ciliary-band arrangements and genetic sequences have been reported from different populations, leading to a doubt on the species’ taxonomic identity. In this study, we present results of our SEM observation of Dinophilus sp. cf. gyrociliatus from Japan and provide mitochondrial 16S ribosomal RNA and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene sequences of Japanese populations as DNA barcodes for contributing to resolving the taxonomic uncertainty of “D. gyrociliatus”.
