Recent human genome projects have revealed that exons encoding proteins count only a few percents, whereas many kinds of repetitive sequences occupy more than 50 % of genome. Some of the latter are related to genetic diseases, but their biological functions and structures are still unknown. Two X-ray structures of a short DNA fragment of d (gcGA [G] 1Agc) show that four base-intercalated duplexes are assembled to form an octaplex at a low K+ concentration, in which the eight G5 residues form a stacked double G-quartet in the central part. At a higher K+ concentration, however, the octaplex is split into just two halves. These structural features suggest a folding process according to a double Greek-key motif for eight tandem repeats of d (ccGA [G] 4Agg) found in Variable number of tandem repeat (VNTR) immediately adjacent to the human pseudoautosomal telomere. Such a packaging of the repeats could facilitate slippage of a certain VNTR sequence during DNA replication, to induce length polymorphism by increasing or decreasing of the repeats.

Torpor, a state of lowered body temperature due to active reduction of the metabolic rate, has potential medical benefits. The aim of this study was to establish a novel laboratory animal that enter torpor without imposing complex conditions. When house musk shrews (Suncus murinus) were kept at an ambient temperature of 24°C, most of the animals did not enter daily torpor. However, when the ambient temperature was lowered to below 20°C, all of the shrews showed torpor in the absence of fasting and short-day photoperiod. The shrews that were exposed to a stepwise decrease in ambient temperature from 24°C to 8°C entered torpor even after returning them to a room kept at 24°C. In conclusion, this study indicates that Suncus murinus may be a suitable model animal for elucidating the mechanism of daily torpor. Elucidation of the mechanisms of torpor by using this model may be useful for inducing a state of artificial hibernation in various species including humans.

本研究は、高齢者のライフヒストリー・インタビューで語られる経験をもとに、高齢者の価値観形成過程に着目しながら、高齢者がどのような価値観に基づいて今を生きているのか、看護系大学生(以下、学生)がどのように捉えているのかを明らかにすることである。学生が捉えた高齢者の価値観形成過程としては、【つらい過去を生きる力に転換】【積み重ねた経験による価値観の形成】【悔いのない生き方の模索】【生き方・死に方の再定義】が抽出された。また、高齢者を支える価値観としては、【平和な日常への感謝】【ありのままの心とからだの受容】【自己への信頼】【人とのつながり】【世代を紡ぐ役割】が明らかとなった。高齢者の長い人生の時間軸に沿った価値観形成過程や、“平和”“自己受容” “人間関係”など現在の高齢者を支えている価値観に着目することは、学生の高齢者の見方を変化させるきっかけとなり、高齢者理解をより深化させる機会となる。

This study was performed to determine whether electrical stimulation of the autonomic centers, that is, the medial nuclei of the hypothalamus in the diencephalon causes asymmetric per-rotational nystagmus (PRN) in healthy or sympathectomized rabbits. The superior cervical ganglion was removed on one or both sides. Asymmetric PRN occurred very rarely in normal or bilaterally sympathoectomized animals, while directional preponderance (DP) appeared in more than half of the recordings in unilaterally sympathectomized animals. Although the rise in blood pressure (BP) during the intravenous influsion of norepinephrine in unilaterally sympathectomized animals also caused significant DP (previous paper), it was less than the degree of DP appearing with the same increment of BP caused by hypothalamic stimulation. Three of 5 animals with asymmetric PRN caused by stimulation showed side differences of cerebellar oxygen tension.These findings show that asymmetric PRN following hypothalamic stimulation can be explained by a neural action on the vestibular neurons from the hypothalamus via the brainstem reticular formation or the cerebellum in addition to the asymmetric vertebral blood flow induced by symathetic vasoconstriction. We propose that this experimental model shows how psychogenic vertigo and/or dizziness can originate from distrubances of the central autonomic nervous system.

幼児用の絵本からはじめる英語多読及びその朗読CD による多聴授業により、学生は学校英語を忘れてゼロから英語を英語のまま吸収し始め、一人一人が自分に合った内容とレベルの素材を選んで読み、聞く自律した学習者となった。また、一人一人の多読多聴状況を授業中に教師が英語で質問し、学生がそれに英語で答えることにより、extensive speakingの効果も確認された。また、英語による学生同士のbook talk と、それを書く事により、extensive writingの成果も確認できた。
