This paper follows my previous research which enquires into political meaning of the issue of charters in thePratīhāra empire by analyzing textual forms of copper-plate documents, and, in the same manner, analyzes forms of copper-plates of the Caulukyas of Gujarat (from the late 10th century to the beginning of the 14th century),which was one of the successive states of the Pratīhāras. But here, I omit the charters issued by the sāmantas (i.e. subordinate rulers) from my analysis, and exclusively deal with the problem of the charters of the overlord issue, revealing changes of the forms of royal charters as the Caulukya state being advanced. The problem of the sāmanta charters and their issue system will be discussed in the next paper, now being prepared, which will clarify the historical changing processes of the sāmanta system from the Pratīhāra empire to its successor state in Gujarat. From our diplomatic analyses of the forms of the overlord charters of the Caulukyas, the following points are clarified: 1) In the early phase of the Caulukya rule, textual forms of royal grant charters were not fixed, in which mode of genealogy, place of date and other factors composing documents are varied each other even in the charters composed by the same writer. However, in the beginning of the 12th century, that is, the starting point of their highest phase (the periods of Jayasiṃha and Kumārapāla), a regular form was created, and, since then, the royal charters had been completely fixed in its form. Such regularization of mode of charters followed the introduction of the office of documents, ākşapaţalika, in the end of the 11th century, meaning the result of a sort of systematization of the document administration under the reigns of Kaṃa I and Jayasiṃha.2) While the above process being progressed, we find a distinctive mode of forms consistent through all the charters issued by the Caulukya overlords. That is the form in which a donor, an informer, and an issuer should be identical and be King. This was a standard form of royal grants which was adopted by most of the overlords in early medieval India, agreeing with codes of legal texts (dharmaśāstras) which prescribe that land grant and issue of its charter be allowed only to King. This mode of overlord charters forms a marked contrast to that of sāmanta ones, which break the regular form of <donor = informer = issuer>. The historical meaning of such solecistic forms will be discussed in the forthcoming paper.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between the phonological awareness (PA) and the reading of hiragana, by conducting a PVT-R test and PA test, and having each participant read all 46 Hiragana letters, one at a time. Each study participant was of average intelligence. Unlike previous studies, this study only prompted Segmentation, Abstract, Deletion, and Reversal PA tasks in the PA test. The first three PA tasks included words with three to four mora, and the Reversal task words with two to four mora. The results indicated the following three points: 1) The PVT-R test and the Reading of Hiragana are not related. 2) the relationship shown between PA development and reading of Hiragana is statistically weak, and 3) the difference in the number ofmora in words has a strong influence on the reading of Hiragana. There appears to be a relationship between the ability to read one letter at a time in Hiragana and PA development. However, the influence of PA development on the number of letters that can be read does not appear to be strong. As this study only investigated the relationship between PA development and the reading of Hiragana one letter at a time, further studies need to examine this relationship with respect to word-level reading. Additionally in the context of PA development, further studies need to take into consideration not only the four PA tasks mentioned here, but also the number of mora in the words used in the study.

Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) is chiefly known to us for its worldwide literary fame, and is generally considered to be characterized by its medieval view of the western world. However, when we pay attention to theological background of the Divine Comedy, especially of its Purgatory, we can recognize that the theological thought of Dante not only represents the medieval western world view, but also holds true in the Byzantine tradition, which has been maintained in the Greek Catholic Church in the Central Europe. We can explain this mystery if we take notice of the history of two Councils: in the Second Council of Lyon (1274), the same theological issues were discussed as in the later Council of Ferrara-Florence (1438-39). The issue of the "Purgatory" or the "Purifying Fire of the Purgatory" was already discussed in the Second Council of Lyon, and the delegates from the Byzantine Empire, which was ruled then by the emperor Michael Ⅷ Palaeologus (1261-82), reached an agreement on this issue. Although the agreement in the later Council of Ferrara-Florence was invalidated by the Orthodox Church soon after that Council, a minor party of the Eastern Church, chiefly found in the Central Europe (the Greek Catholic Church), was true to this agreement. So since we can find the same theological view both in Dante and in the Greek Catholic Church, we can surmise that Dante was acquainted with the issues discussed in the Second Council of Lyon. One of the chief leaders of the Greek delegates in the Council of Ferrara-Florence was (later) Cardinal Bessarion (1403-72). He donated main important manuscripts of the Greek Classics to the Library of Saint Mark in Venice, and these manuscripts have greatly benefited classical scholars. Thus, both the Greek Catholic Church and the Classical Studies have their origins from Bessarion. We can say that all of the endeavors of Bessarion for the union between the Western and the Eastern Churches were made for the purpose of revalidation of the agreement made in the Second Council of Lyon. So in these points of view, too, Dante will be counted as the "sixth" (Inf. 4,102) in the line of the divine poets starting from Homer, whose best manuscript (Venetus 454: "A" of the Iliad) is found in the Library of Saint Mark in Venice.
