GAO Yi-Sheng, who was an aborigine of Tsuou tribe in Taiwan, was born in 1908. His native name was Uyongu Yatauyungana, and he also had a Japanese name, Issei Yada, because Taiwan was ruled by Japan around the time. When Taiwan became a territory of Republic of China in 1945, he again changed his name to a Chinese name, GAO Yi-Sheng. Although he was arrested on a false charge as a revolter against the government in 1952 and executed in 1954, Taiwanese and Japanese scholars have considered him as one of the elite in Tsuou tribe, not only because he attempted to build an autonomous society for Taiwanese aborigines, but also because he had considerable talents for literature and music. Even when he was in prison, GAO Yi-Sheng composed many songs, as thinking of his own children and people of Tsuou tribe. It is undoubted that he was a tragic figure in the history of politics, but I would like to shed more light on his music talent. We all know that music composition needs knowledge of organizing the notes and writing them on the staves. So where and why did GAO learn the knowledge about music composition? What is characteristic of his music? In order to answer the questions, in this paper, I will examine GAO's progress in music education during his school years and analyze his compositions as well.

The causes of drowning must dictate especially what we teach, content, and to a lesser degree, how we teach. Therefore, an project was conducted among Japanese university students in order to explore the relationship between swimming competency, students estimates of their competency, and their perception of the risk of drowning. Sixty five males and 48 females university physical education students enrolled at three institutions were the subjects of the study. The questionnaire consisted of a) perception of their ability, b) perception of their ability to perform these in open water and c) their perception of risk in five specific scenarios. Practical tests consist of seven aquatic skills. No significant differences were found in actual swimming-related abilities between male and female students, although more females than males did not complete the tests of: dive entry into pool (female 23%; male 11%), surface dive to 2m (female 33%; male 19%), and 100m swim on back (female 28%; male 9%). Similarly, no differences were found in self-estimated swimming abilities by gender. More females than males estimated higher risk of drowning for each of the 5 drowning scenarios that students were asked to estimate the personal degree of risk. This study found that male students tend to underestimate the potential dangers in the risk of drowning.

The interview begins with an outline of Gottlob Frege's life, academic career and the reception of his ideas by later philosophers such as Bertrand Russell and Ludwig Wittgenstein. Frege's main contributions to logic and philosophy are summarized, and the key ideas of his three main books - Begriffsschrift, Die Grundlagen der Arithmetik and Grundgesetze der Arithmetik - are explained. Particular attention is paid to Frege's fundamental claim that "a statement of number contains an assertion about a concept" and to the 'Cantor-Hume Principle',which play a central role in his logicist project - the attempt to show that arithmetic can be reduced to logic. Also discussed are three of Frege's important essays, which elucidate his view of concepts as functions and his distinctions between concept and object and between 'Sinn' and 'Bedeutung'. Here particular attention is paid to problems concerning his notion of an extension of a concept (or more generally, his notion of a value-range of a function), the translation of 'Bedeutung', and the application of the distinction between Sinn and Bedeutung to different kinds of linguistic expressions. Recent developments of Frege's ideas by, for example, 'neo-logicists' are mentioned, and there is also discussion of Frege's conception of 'thoughts'. The interview ends with some remarks on certain influences on Frege, such as from neo-Kantianism, and some suggestions for further reading.

Institutional research (hereafter referred to as “IR?) activities in Japanese universities have shifted from the introductory stage in which organizations were set up to the productive period of embodying their activities. The fundamental task of IR relating to education is to collect data from a questionnaire survey of students about their learning activities and various teaching data as provided by the university administrative office, and to thereby objectively determine the strengths and weaknesses of the university. Furthermore, it is important to promote detailed analysis by collaborating with each department in the university to make use of this in educational improvement. However, the IR organization structure varies depending on the university. Therefore, it is difficult to use a single educational evaluation model commonly applied to every university. For this reason, the IR staff at each university is seeking a number of concrete examples leading to educational improvement such as the type of data used, analysis examples, and useful procedures. In this paper, we report examples of IR seminars held by Hokkaido University through collaboration with the administrative staff and faculties. This is an important and meaningful example of one type of IR activity.
