True hermaphroditism is even rarer, an d the rarest form of all is true lateral form. We have had the good fortune to discover and report a case of true lateral hermaphroditism in detail. The case we are about to report is the fifty-sixth in the literature. It is the seventeenth of the lateral or alternating variety. Patient, aged 15 and reared as a boy, was admitted Dec. 14, 1953, complaining of an undescended right testicle, with malformation of the penis and urethra. We refer to the patient as "he" The body configuration conformed to t h e male type with exception of hair distribution. The external genitalia were unusual in appearance, showing well-developed down-curved phallus and a condition of complate scrotal hypospadia (Fig. 1). In left scrotum normal testicle, epididymis and seminal cord were palpable, although right scrotum was empty. There was no sign of a vaginal opening in perineum, and "he" said "he" had neither ejaculated nor menstruated. The 17-ketosteroid excretion in our case extended from 7.2 to 13.4 mg/24 hrs., it is among the lower values for the normal male in our laboratory. Retrograde pyelogram showed normal renal shadow and no evidence of adrenal tumor. At operation for right undescended testicle, an infantile ovary, small uterus and fallpoian tube with fimbriated end were discovered in groin (Fig. 2, 0, U and T), but no testicle was detected elsewhere. Panhysterectomy and a Denis-Browne type repair for hypospadia was performed successfully. Microscopic examination of sections from the removed ovary demonstrates the presence of numerous primordial follicles and a typical ovarian stroma (Fig. 3). Histological finding of uterus is illustrated in Fig. 4. Subsequently we discovered a vaginal orifice opening into the posterior urethra, and its smear replesented typical vaginal epitheliar pattern (Fig. 5). A left spermatocystogram showed a rudimentary Seminal bladder and simultaneous vaginogram showed bicorna .te vaginal contour (Fig. 7, S and V). A biopsy of the left gonad in the scrotum showed a mature tissue of testicle (Fig. 6). On Feb. 1, 1954, an amputation of vagina was done. Taking the g ross and microscopic features into account, it would seen that there are reasonable grounds for regarding the case as one of true lateral hermaphroditism. A 37-year-old man consulted our hospital with a complaint of male infertility. He was masculine but 159.9 cm in height. His beard, axillary hair and pubic hair were all normal. The penis and scrotum were also normal, but bilateral testes were very small (1 ml. respectively). Semen analysis revealed azoospermia. Endocrinological examination showed elevated serum lactating hormone and follicle stimulating hormone level, and extremely low level of serum testosterone. Testicular biopsy disclosed severely hyalinized seminiferous tubules and hyperplasia of Leydig cells. No ovarian tissue could be detected. The chromosomal analysis revealed a karyotype of 46 XX. This case was diagnosed as a case of 46XX male. The Japanese literature of 46XX male is reviewed.

Flagellar motor proteins, MotA/B and PomA/B, are essential for the motility of Escherichia coli and Vibrio alginolyticus, respectively. Those complexes work as a H+ and a Na+ channel, respectively and play important roles in torque generation as the stators of the flagellar motors. Although Asp32 of MotB and Asp24 of PomB are believed to function as ion binding site(s), the ion flux pathway from the periplasm to the cytoplasm is still unclear. Conserved residues, Ala39 of MotB and Cys31 of PomB, are located on the same sides as Asp32 of MotB and Asp24 of PomB, respectively, in a helical wheel diagram. In this study, a series of mutations were introduced into the Ala39 residue of MotB and the Cys31 residue of PomB. The motility of mutant cells were markedly decreased as the volume of the side chain increased. The loss of function due to the MotB(A39V) and PomB(L28A/C31A) mutations was suppressed by mutations of MotA(M206S) and PomA(L183F), respectively, and the increase in the volume caused by the MotB(A39V) mutation was close to the decrease in the volume caused by the MotA(M206S) mutation. These results demonstrate that Ala39 of MotB and Cys31 of PomB form part of the ion flux pathway and pore with Met206 of MotA and Leu183 of PomA in the MotA/B and PomA/B stator units, respectively.

Flagellar motors embedded in bacterial membranes are molecular machines powered by specific ion flows. Each motor is composed of a stator and a rotor and the interactions of those components are believed to generate the torque. Na+ influx through the PomA/PomB stator complex of Vibrio alginolyticus is coupled to torque generation and is speculated to trigger structural changes in the cytoplasmic domain of PomA that interacts with a rotor protein in the C-ring, FliG, to drive the rotation. In this study, we tried to overproduce the cytoplasmic loop of PomA (PomA-Loop), but it was insoluble. Thus, we made a fusion protein with a small soluble tag (GB1) which allowed us to express and characterize the recombinant protein. The structure of the PomA-Loop seems to be very elongated or has a loose tertiary structure. When the PomA-Loop protein was produced in E. coli, a slight dominant effect was observed on motility. We conclude that the cytoplasmic loop alone retains a certain function.

An approach of cell-free synthesis is presented for the functional expression of transmembrane proteins without the need of refolding. The transmembrane region of the pharaonis halobacterial transducer protein, pHtrII, was translated with various large soluble tags added (thioredoxin, glutathione S-transferase, green fluorescent protein and maltose binding protein). In this system, all fusion pHtrII were translated in a soluble fraction, presumably, forming giant micelle-like structures. The detergent n-dodecyl-β-D-maltoside was added for enhancing the solubilization of the hydrophobic region of pHtrII. The activity of the expressed pHtrII, having various tags, was checked using a pull-down assay, using the fact that pHtrII forms a signaling complex with pharaonis phoborhodopsin (ppR) in the membrane, as also in the presence of a detergent. All tagged pHtrII showed a binding activity with ppR. Interestingly, the binding activity with ppR was positively correlated with the molecular weight of the soluble tags. Thus, larger soluble tags lead to higher binding activities. We could show, that our approach is beneficial for the preparation of active membrane proteins, and is also potentially applicable for larger membrane proteins, such as 7-transmembrane proteins.

Effects of wood vinegar (WV) on red mites, safety test for chicks, and egg production performance were examined. In the counting of red mite numbers at cage knots using RGB color range of red mites by the image analyzer, the red mite were decreased after spraying (P<0.01). In a WV safety test for 8-day-old chicks, one ml of water, original WV, or WV diluted 500 and 1,000 times were tube-fed twice daily for 6 days. The rate of body weight gain was decreased in original WV group than that in the control (P<0.05), but it was not different in both WV dilution groups compared with that in the water-only group. In spraying one ml WV to the hen’s face twice per day for 8 days, the egg production performances of WV group did not changed so much compared with those of the control and initial day. These results suggest that the WV did not reduced production performance.From these results, WV could exterminate red mites, and did not reduce egg production, suggesting that WV is a useful natural substance to exterminate red mites without harmful effect.

It is the object of this paper to make clear the reason of the formation of the Settan type which is the characteristic plan type among many types of the farm houses in the Edo period. Settan type is featured by having the entrance on the gable side. Judging from some of the oldest ermains in the seventeenth century, the plan of this type consisted of three chanmbers arranged in single file and dirty floor to parallel with them. Each of the chambers is called 'Zashiki' (parlor), 'Daidokoro' (living and dinning), and 'Nando' (bed room) from the front to the back. Zashiki has a wide veranda in frant of itself. Conseqently, Settan type constitutes the formalized fasade for the farm house. Settan type is distributed over three provinces, Yamashiro, Settsu, and Tanba (equal to Kyoto, Osaka, and Hyogo Prefecture at present time). What does this distribution mean? After many researches, I was aware of the correspondence of this distribution with the dominant area of the Hosokawa who was substantially the execter of the Muromachi Shogunate from the middle of the fifteenth century to the middle of the sixteenth century. In this period, the upper-most class farmers were given the political privelege and played the part of the official ruler of thier villages. On the other hand, it is thought that the residents in the houses belonging to this type in the seventeenth century were the desendants of them. It is conjectured, therefore, that Settan type was formed as the result of emphasizing the social parts in planning, that is a parlor and a wide veranda, in front. In addition to this tendency, probably, the privelege of using 'Hafu' (the triangle board on the gable side of the roof) which had been only used by the upper-class in the Middle Ages, might have been permited to them in return for their special position. As the result, the gable side of their houses might have been put in the front to exaggrate it. The older type planning was re-organized in accompany with these occurrences. Thus, Settan type had been formed in this region by the first half of the sixteenth century.

During the repair of double-strand breaks (DSBs) in DNA, active mobilizations for conformational changes in chromosomes have been widely observed in eukaryotes, from yeast to animal and plant cells. DSB-damaged loci in the yeast genome showed increased mobility and relocation to the nuclear periphery. However, the driving forces behind DSB-induced chromatin dynamics remain unclear. In this study, mathematical models of normal and DSB-damaged yeast chromosomes were developed to simulate their structural dynamics. The effects of histone degradation in the whole nucleus and the change in the physical properties of damaged loci due to the binding of SUMOylated repair proteins were considered in the model of DSB-induced chromosomes based on recent experimental results. The simulation results reproduced DSB-induced changes to structural and dynamical features by which the combination of whole nuclear histone degradation and the rigid structure formation of repair protein accumulations on damaged loci were suggested to be primary contributors to the process by which damaged loci are relocated to the nuclear periphery.

マイナンバーカードの利用で懸念されることは、マイナンバーカードの裏面に記載された個人番号による国民総背番号化と、個人番号とともに収集される特定個人情報の漏えいである。これらを防止するために、マイナンバーカードの裏面に記載された個人番号の利用を法律で定めた場合のみに限定している。しかし、マイナンバーカードのおもて面は公的な身分証明書として使用できることが政府や地方自治体から広報されており、個人番号が記載された裏面のような制限はない。ところが、マイナンバーカードのおもて面には氏名、住所、生年月日、顔写真などが記載されており、これらをスキャンしてデジタル情報にすればコンピュータで個人情報管理に利用できる。この情報は運用次第では個人を特定する情報として利用できる。そこで本論では、マイナンバーカードのおもて面の情報を利用した個人情報管理のリスクと影響を検証してその対応について提言した。
