The present paper aims at the collaboration of cognitive science and artificial intelligence. Contrary to the traditional notion of intelligence, recent development in cognitive science has revealed that human cognition is closely tied with its body, emotion, and the environment, to generate adaptive actions. These findings are partly paralleled with those in artificial intelligence. Realizing the commonalities would trigger the reunion of the two research communities.

In this treatise, I have made clear these two points:first, the struture of the text;second, the cultural background of the structure. I have investigated the transition of the type of the intelligence. In the Homeric age, the intelligence ca11ed METIS was highly estimated. This is the eminent character of the shamanistic culture. The word''METIS"connotes the ability to cope with the flUCtUant reality. 111the age of Plato, the sophists, the rhetoricians, the doctors and the politicians had this ability. They were, however, little concerned with the ethical aspect. Plato stood against this type of i11telligence by thinking articulately through words. But the third type of the intelligence, which Plato suggested, is still insu伍cient to reach the real recognition of the world. We must once get out of the linguistic dimension.

Mineralogical and experimental examinations were carried out on the clays that it was thought could have been used during the Naqada I period or earlier. The investigations showed some features as follows: 1) the clays used during the Naqada I period were the so-called Nile Silt, 2) potters of that time exploited two types of clay, which were possibly fired by different methods, and 3) the firing of the pottery made from the fine clay was probably conducted in a firing structure. These results suggest that the techniques of making pottery had been fully sophisticated by the end of the Naqada I period.Certain changes occurred in ceramic production during the Naqada II period. Some pottery types typical of that time began to be manufactured from Marl Clay, while the Naqada I pottery had been made only from Nile Silt. The parallel ridges on the rim of some Naqada II pottery suggest the introduction of the turning device. The disappearance of black spots may indicate that the updraught kiln was also introduced to the Naqada culture. The use of the similar calcareous clay, the turning device and the updraught kiln in the Syro-Palestinian region predated the introduction of these into Egypt. This fact suggests that the new information on ceramic production came from Syro-Palestine.The new mode of pottery production appears in the clay preparation, in the shaping process and in the firing method. Such an overall change suggests the influx of foreign potters into Egypt rather than learning through the superficial imitation. Furthermore, is it likely that only potters came to Egypt? It should be concluded that á large group of people migrated from Syro-Palestine and that this stimulation was a major factor in making the Naqada Culture mature enough to expand into Lower Egypt.

The number of professional sports teams in Japan is increasing as is the need for the diversification of human resources. The objective of this study is to provide insight into the collaboration of professional sports teams in the Kansai area in Japan with universities, and to examine the different kinds of collaboration. The internet survey conducted indicated that there are six types of collaboration between professional sports teams and universities : collaboration, planning practice, fieldwork/volunteer, surveys, lectures, and others. It was evidenced that the Nippon Professional Baseball Organization (NPB), Japan Professional Football League (J. League), and Japan Professional Basketball League (B. League) had different types of collaboration with universities. In particular, since there are several collaborations in the sports business and management area, it is important for professional sports teams to emphasize their human resource requirements and for universities to meet such requirements.

1998年8月台風4号の接近に伴う豪雨が福島県南部〜栃木県北部に集中した.この豪雨で多くの斜面表層崩壊が認められた.これらの崩壊は侵食前線より下方の急斜面で多発しているとともに, 地下水や表流水の集中しやすい地形・地質条件で生じている.この表層崩壊は厚さ1m未満の根系を含む表土だけの崩壊で, 崩壊面には割れ目のほとんどない低溶結火砕流堆積物が露出しており、根系の付着は全く認められないことを特徴としている.ここでは, 根系層だけからなるこのような表層崩壊をその崩壊形態から「根系層崩壊」と呼び, その崩壊状況を説明するとともに, 斜面崩壊に対する植生の根系の防災効果について述べる.調査は, 空中写真による地形解析, 地表地質踏査および簡易貫入試験による地盤調査により行った.調査の結果, 根系層崩壊の特徴は以下のとおりまとめられる.(1)崩壊厚さが1m未満ときわめて薄いこと, (2)斜面傾斜が40°前後と急であること, (3)表流水や地下水が集まりやすい地形・地質で生じること, (4)根系のある表層の直下に岩盤が分布し, N_c値が2以下から50以上に急変すること, (5)表層直下の岩盤に根系が入り込む割れ目がないこと, (6)崩土内の立木が立ったままで崩土全体が速い速度で流下する等である.

The energy consumption structures of the single-family houses were investigated by the questionnaire. The houses for the investiga- tion were the industrialized house built after 1985 and an insulated performance that adjusts to the Japanese building thermal insulation standard. The results of the secondary energy consumption of an average single family were 15.5MWh. In average, 40% of the total energy consumption in residential house was use for domestic hot water heating, 26% for space heating, 24% for house hold appliances, 9% for cooking, 4% for space cooling. The primary energy consumption of an average single family was 22.7MWh. The carbon dioxide discharge rate of an average single family is 1.95t.

玄味子(市河寛斎)著、磯田湖龍斎画。遊里風俗絵入り漢詩集。明和頃、申椒堂(須原屋市兵衛)刊。大本1冊。跋九日山人(平沢旭山)。墨摺り。東奥逸客(藤塚知周)の序に「余得玄味子所伝北里歌於九日山人之処焉」云々とあり、九日山人宅で得た玄味子の竹枝「北里歌」について、その詩文が「北里」(新吉原)の妖態を模し、嬌情を表すことの妙趣なるを愛玩する余り、湖龍子に絵を請い、板行に及んだという。序に次いで、玄味子の「北里謌三十首」を置き、「鄭衛之声放於仲尼、其詩列之雅頌、所以不舎其言也、余欲輯全唐詩逸、故於此篇特表出之」とあり、「全唐詩逸」の編纂を意図するゆえに、この篇を著したという。本文は、見開きごとに卑俗な表現を用いて遊里の風俗を叙した詩句(竹枝)を掲げ、各詩句を異なる書風によって表記するが、書は鳳兮、吾従、桃花女、偸楽山人、遊女筒井、三世路考、東野山人、その他、俳人、遊女、役者、書家など多様な人々による。絵は湖龍斎の繊細で妖艶な味わいの美人画で、廓の内部の諸相を巧みに描出する。(鈴木淳)

ユニケージ開発手法は UNIX 哲学に基づいたシステム開発手法であり,企業システム開発に 20 年の実績がある.近年のシステム開発では,データベースの構築に多くの場合で RDBMS が用いられる.これに対してユニケージ開発手法では Unix の機能のみを用いてデータベースを構築する.ファイルシステムにテキストファイルとしてデータを格納し,シェルを通じてコマンドでデータを処理する事により,データベースの機能を実現する.本稿では,ユニケージ開発手法に基づく,Unix ファイルシステムとシェルを用いた,データベース構築と操作の方法について概説し,その発展について述べる.

The phylum Aquificae comprises chemolithoautotrophic thermophilic to hyperthermophilic bacteria, in which the nitrogenase reductase gene (nifH) has been reported. However, nitrogen-fixing activity has not yet been demonstrated in members of this deeply branching bacterial phylum. We isolated two thermophilic diazotrophic strains from chemosynthetic microbial communities in slightly alkaline hot springs (≥70°C) in Nakabusa, Nagano Prefecture, Japan. A phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA genes identified these strains as members of the genus Hydrogenobacter within Aquificae. Their NifH sequences showed 96.5 and 97.4% amino acid sequence identities to that from Hydrogenobacter thermophilus TK-6. Nitrogenase activity, measured by acetylene reduction, was confirmed in both strains at 70°C. These novel strains grew under semi-aerobic conditions by using CO2 as the sole carbon source and N2 as the sole nitrogen source in media containing hydrogen and/or thiosulfate. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of active nitrogen fixation in thermophilic bacteria at 70°C and in the phylum Aquificae.
