生物相や環境変遷の自然史文献がない海域では, 環境の基礎情報が決定的に不足しており, 管理や保全の計画の立案のための基礎情報がない. 瀬戸内海西部周防灘は豊かな生態系に恵まれているが自然史情報が欠落している. 大分県中津干潟では市民が中心となり研究者が支援する環境調査活動が行われている. その結果にもとづき, 無堤地区の海岸環境保全策の提言が行われた. 港湾開発時の環境アセスメント結果は広く公開されなかったため, 干潟の広域的な情報が含まれていたが活用され得なかった. 地域住民の主体的な調査は, 地元での環境学習や永続的環境管理の動機付けとなる. 今後は官学民の調査の各々の特性を活かした補間関係による情報の重層化と活用が不可欠である.

Nowadays a word of “IKEBANA” has been recognized all over the world like KABUKI and CHANOYU, and greeted with interest and respect. Although the deed of arranging flowers is common among people globally, only Japanese people have sought philosophical implications in arranging flowers, which lead to view of universe, or meaning of life, and IKEBANA has made unique development in Japanese culture. IKEBANA resembles cosmetics significantly. IKEBANA is an epitome of natural scenery, however, just bringing natural forests into house is not IKEBANA. Like cosmetics, human beings artificially arrange flowers and bring out the intrinsic beauty the flowers originally have. The hidden beauty of the well-balanced curved branch is come out from strictly selecting and removing leaves from the thick branch. I would like to deliver the following two points; one is that IKEBANA is logic, another is that IKEBANA is philosophy.

Intracranial lipomas are rare, especially in the cerebellopontine angle. Only 21 cases have so far been reported. In this communication, the case of a left cerebellopontine angle lipoma in a 48-year-old male is described and the relevant literature is reviewed.

想定東海地震のような,陸地の極近傍で発生する海溝型の巨大地震による震源近傍の強震動については,強震記録が存在しないため,不明な点が多い.本研究では,経験的サイト増幅・位相特性を考慮した統計的グリーン関数法により,想定東海地震の震源近傍における強震動の評価を実施している.強震動の評価に必要なサイト増幅特性はスペクトルインバージョンにより推定し,2001年4月3日静岡県中部の地震(MJ5.3)の強震記録を利用して強震動評価手法の妥当性を検証した上で,想定東海地震に対する強震動評価を実施している.その結果,震源近傍における地震動はサイト増幅特性に大きく依存し,サイト増幅特性の特に大きい場所では,1995年兵庫県南部地震の観測波を上回る地震動も想定されることがわかった.

休廃止鉱山である宮崎県富高鉱山では、砒素を含む坑内水が未処理のまま河川へ排水されており、将来的な対策として中和処理が検討されている。地表踏査やボーリング調査、鉱山の既存情報から、梅ヒ断層及び二坑ヒ断層に挟まれた区域では高透水性領域が形成されていることが想定される。大王山斜面から涵養した降水は高透水性領域の不飽和部を経て地下水面に達した後、地形的に低い周囲の河川へ流動しているものと考えられる。概念モデルをベースに数値モデルを構築し、降雨と坑内水流量及び地下水位との応答再現を試みた。その結果、おおよそ実測値と整合的な計算結果が得られ、概念モデルの妥当性を示すものと評価できる。

ボリュームディスプレイは,立体を3次元空間に直接描画するディスプレイである.著者らは,市販部品から容易に構成可能なボリュームディスプレイを開発した,本ディスプレイは,往復運動する蛍光表示管(VFD)上に立体の断面を順に表示し,残像効果により立体表示を行う.本論文では,このボリュームディスプレイのアプリケーションとして,極小曲面の等長変形(IDMS)の可視化ツールを提案する.IDMSは数学的に興味深い対象であるが,その変形の過程は2Dディスプレイ上の表示画像では理解が難しい.我々のアプリケーションにより,ユーザはIDMSの過程を,体積を持つ3Dアニメーション画像として観察することができる.

Herewith the crustal deformations as revealed by means of precise geodetic surveys are discussed in connection with the crustal deformations revealed as the results of topographical observations, based on the theory of isostasy.With regard to the crustal deformations found by geodetic methods, it is pointed out that the acute crustal deformations which might have accompanied the destructive earthquake is seen as occurred in reverse direction against the pre- or post-seismic chronic crustal deformations.It is also pointed out that the mode of the acute crustal deformations is such that the earth's crust rises where the gravitational anomalies are positive and vice versa, and that the mode of crustal deformations found as the results of topographical observations seems to agree with that of the acute crustal deformations.

Previously, we reported that ovarian hormones affect the immune response against E. coli isolated from the dogs affected with pyometra. In order to investigate mechanisms underlying the immune modulation, we examined the effects of ovarian hormones on the generation of dendritic cells (DCs), the most potent antigen presenting cell. DCs were differentiated from peripheral blood monocytes (PBMOs) using a cytokine cocktail. Both estrogen receptor and progesterone receptors were expressed by the PBMOs and immature DCs. When various ovarian hormones were added to the culture for the DC differentiation, progesterone significantly decreased the expression of DC maturation markers, such as CD1a, CD80 and CD86, on mature DCs. Conversely, the addition of estrogen to the cultures increased the expression of CD86, but not other maturation makers. Furthermore, DCs differentiated in the presence of progesterone did not stimulate allogeneic mononuclear cells in PB. Taken together, these results indicate that progesterone diminishes the maturation of DCs, leading to decreased immune responses against invading pathogens.

Load-controlled fatigue tests were carried out on PAN-based monofilament carbon fibers under cyclic tensile load conditions at a frequency of 10Hz. Fatigue strength data are obtained under pre-determined maximum load Pmax with three different stress ratios of R(=Pmix/Pmax)=0.1, 0.5 and 0.7. The maximum load Pmax is not an appropriate parameter to evaluate the fatigue strength behavior because the cross-sectional area of monofilament carbon fiber is not constant and varies along the longitudinal direction. This fact results in a large scatter of fatigue lives when the data are plotted on Pmax-Nf diagram. In order to evaluate the fatigue strength behavior more precisely, the fatigue strength data must be plotted on S-N diagram by using the maximum tensile stress σmax determined from the cross-sectional area of the fracture surface. It is found that S-N properties of monofilament carbon fibers clearly show the fatigue behavior, depending on the stress ratio R. It is also found that the fatigue strength of monofilament carbon fiber is governed by two parameters such as the maximum stress σmax and the stress amplitude σa, and that the combined stress parameter σmax(1-α)×σaα is useful to describe the fatigue strength behaviors of the different stress ratios.

The purpose of this paper is to show the realization of passive walking of a biped robot Emu that is composed of 1 body and 2 legs. In the beginning of this paper, we fomulate the problem and analyze the stability of the walking with attitude control of a body. The walking is called “semi-passive walking”. We show, next, a numerical simulation on the semi-passive walking. Finally, we show some experimental results to verify a validity of the semi-passive walking and the analysis.
