When dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) is associated with leptomeningeal venous drainage (LMVD), most cases have venous hypertension and concomitant venous congestion in the same areas due to reduced venous circulation. On the other hand, some cases in the DAVF with LMVD have no low-perfusion area. We studied this phenomenon. The subjects were 25 patients with DAVF. Of them, 16 cases had LMVD. Eleven had a low-perfusion area but 5 had no low-perfusion area. We analyzed this phenomenon in 5 cases. Two cases had anterior cranial fossa DAVF, 2 had tentorium DAVF, and 1 had transverse-sigmoid sinus DAVF. The characteristics of these DAVF are: 1) extra-sinusal type or pure leptomeningeal venous drainage, 2) low shunt flow, 3) existence of accessory route.

Although recent advancements in molecular biology have provided increasing insights into the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases, there is almost no disease-modifying therapy for which the efficacy has been verified in clinical trials. Spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA) is an adult-onset motor neuron disease caused by the expansion of a trinucleotide CAG repeat in the androgen receptor (AR) gene. SBMA exclusively affects males, whereas does not manifest in the females homozygous for the AR mutation. The ligand-dependent nuclear accumulation of pathogenic AR protein is central to the pathogenesis, although additional steps such as inter- and intra-molecular interaction are also required for toxicity. Leuprorelin, a luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) analogue that suppresses testosterone production from testis, inhibits toxic accumulation of pathogenic AR, thereby mitigating histopathological and behavioral impairments in a mouse model of SBMA. Although a randomized placebo-controlled multi-centric clinical trial showed no definite effect of the drug on motor functions, there was the improvement of swallowing function in a subgroup of patients whose disease duration was less than 10 years. These results indicate a need to elucidate the entire disease mechanism, clarify the natural history, initiate therapeutic intervention at an early stage, and develop sensitive outcome measures to evaluate drug effect.

In this article, reaction volumes and pressure effects on protein reactions are discussed by means of the pulsed laser induced transient grating (TG) spectroscopy. By the TG method, temporal profile of the protein reaction volume has been determined for the non-reversible reaction process. For examples, TG studies on the photo-chemical process of carboxymyoglobin and photoactive yellow protein are introduced. The reaction volume for each process has been determined, which can not be studied by the other spectroscopic methods such as transient absorption method. A high pressure optical system, which enabled us to measure the pressure dependence of the reaction volume, has also been reported.

This paper develops a newly bicycle concept named smart bicycle (SBIC) with automatic transmission and energy recuperating ability. The SBIC operation is based on a hydrostatic transmission (HST). Several HST designs have been proposed. Moreover, a use of energy converting and storing devices is an optional design for the SBIC to recovery energy during the deceleration or going downhill process, and to support this energy to the hydraulic system during the acceleration or going uphill process. The working efficiency of the bicycle is then increased and could become competitive with the roller-chain technology. Simulations have been carried out to evaluate the working performances of the proposed SBIC concepts.

複雑な人間関係を数理的に解析するために、近年ネットワーク解析が盛んに用いられるようになった。また、解析用のネットワークを構築するための基礎データとして、WWWのハイパーリンクが用いられるケースが増えてきている。本論文では政治家間の人間関係を示すネットワーク構造の構築に、ハイパーリンク関係を用いる妥当性を検討するため、日本の国会議員のWebページをデータとして用い、議員間のハイパーリンクと議員の名前のテキスト上での言及関係によって二種類のネットワークを構築した。また、得られたネットワークに対してネットワーク解析の手法中心性とクリーク分析の解析を適用し、結果を比較した。得られた結果より、言及関係によるネットワークは、集団における重要性を表す指標としての妥当性があり、ハイパーリンクによるネットワークでは派閥の分析が可能であることが分かった。現状として、大規模政党においては、比較的Webの利用は進んでいないが、今後政治領域でもWebの利用がより一般化することが期待される。このため、将来的にはより多様な関係性の計量的解析にWebデータが利用可能になると考えられる。

所得格差を説明する理論の多くは、個人が仕事において発揮する技能が高い所得と結びつくことを指摘する。しかし、技能は直接測定することが困難であるため、技能と所得格差との関係を実証的に明らかにする試みは多くはない。本稿は、技能を、「仕事における裁量」と「仕事の複雑性」という二つの側面から測定し、所得格差をもたらす技能の役割を実証的に明らかにした。 2004年に全国の成人男女を対象に実施された社会調査データをもちいて所得決定構造の分析を行った結果、以下の三つの知見が得られた。第一に、高い所得に結びつく技能は、発言権や決定権をもったり、資料の分析や企画を行うといった組織における意思決定に関する技能や、機械装置の操作に関する技能であった。第二に、性別、学歴、雇用形態、企業規模、勤続年数の所得への効果の一部は、技能の所得への効果により媒介されていた。しかし第三に、技能をコントロールしても、性別、雇用形態、企業規模の所得への効果は大きく、同じ技能を発揮していても、女性ほど、パートほど、そして企業規模が小さいほど所得が低いことがわかった。

This paper presents cognitive/computational models of rhetoric I have proposed: an affective-similarity-based model of metaphor comprehension and an implicit-display-theoretic model of irony interpretation. This paper also mentions poetic/aesthetic effects of metaphor and irony evoked through the interpretation process.

民主主義年齢を重ねた国々においては、どの国においても投票率の低下という現象が生じている。投票率の低下は、民主主義の危機のように論じられることがあるが、それはその国がどのような社会的条件にあるかによる。民主主義にとっては、そのときの政治的状況に即座に反応する投票行動ではなく、継続される投票態度の方が重要である。投票態度がどのように備わるかについて、(1)個人の社会経済的背景、(2)個人に内面化された民主的な意識、(3)社会政治的なマクロ状況の3つの要因による因果モデルを分析する。また、積極的な投票態度を持っていない人びとは社会調査に回答しにくいというバイアスを評価するためTobitモデルのHeckman推定法によってこの因果モデルを分析する。日本の2005年のデータを用いた分析の結果、次のことが明らかとなった。(1)学歴や文化資本は、反権威主義的および多元主義的意識を高めるが、この2つの意識は投票態度に直接の影響を持たない。(2)若年期に経験した高度経済成長は、非自己中心的な社会参加を促し、積極的な投票態度を形成させる。(3)若年期の経済成長が大きいほど反功利主義的人間観になるが、これは投票態度に直接の効果を持たない。(4)階層的地位は投票態度に直接の積極的な影響を与える。現代日本においては、反権威主義や多元主義が投票態度と直接には結びつかなくなる一方、経済成長の停滞は、自己中心主義または少ない社会参加を通じて、消極的な投票態度を導く。

Generation of iPS cells from mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEF) was achieved using a BacMam transduction system containing a polycistronic plasmid expression vector for coincident and optimized expression of four defined reprogramming transcription factors. The sequences for Oct4, Klf4, Sox2 and c-Myc, were cloned as a fusion gene (OKSM) in a single open reading frame (ORF) via self-cleaving 2A peptides and expressed under the control of the CAG promoter. The transduction efficiency of primary MEF cells with BacMam particles carrying CAG-directed Venus reporter gene is 64–98%. After three successive transductions (at intervals of 3 days) of MEF cells with BacMam particles carrying a OKSM or OSKM cassette, the iPS cell colonies are observed in 15–24 days. A single transduction of MEF cells is also effective in generating sufficiently reprogrammed iPS cell lines. The iPS cell lines from colonies picked were positively stained by Nanog, SSEA-1 immunofluorescence and alkaline phosphatase substrate markers. The advantage of using the EOS-S(4+)-EmGFP reporter to identify sufficiently reprogrammed iPS cell lines is discussed by representing experimental results obtained with electroporated plasmids, such as a mixture of 2 tandem OS and KM plasmids and a polycistronic OKSM expression plasmid.

抗体医薬の臨床効果を高めるため,抗体が持つエフェクター機能を増強する試みがなされている.数多くの試行錯誤の結果,Fc領域の特定のアミノ酸の改変,あるいは糖鎖の修飾により抗体のFc受容体や補体への結合活性が向上し,ADCC活性やCDC活性といったエフェクター機能が増強することが示された.また,高いADCC活性と高いCDC活性を併せ持つ抗体を作製することができ,このような多機能化抗体は,複雑なメカニズムにより高い治療抵抗性を獲得している難治性癌の治療に有効であることが期待される.

症例は68歳,男性.1993年3月浸潤型胸腺腫を伴った重症筋無力症に対し拡大胸腺摘出術,心膜・右肺・左腕頭静脈合併切除を施行した.術後縦隔に放射線照射施行し,外来で定期的経過観察を行っていた.2010年5月近医で胸部X線上異常影を指摘され,当院を紹介受診した.画像検査および生検にて胸腺腫の全身転移(右胸壁転移,多発骨転移,縦隔リンパ節転移,副腎転移,臀筋転移)と診断した.まず仙骨骨転移に対し,放射線照射を行い,続けて全身化学療法を行った.胸壁転移巣のみ縮小したが,他の転移巣は治療に抵抗性であった.胸腺腫の再発は局所進展が主体で,遠隔転移は稀である.また本症例の転移巣はthymoma(TypeB2,B3),thymic carcinomaが混在して存在し,化学療法への反応性も異なっていた.文献的考察を加え報告する.

Objectives: There has been a growing concern that maternal employment could have adverse or beneficial effects on children’s health. Although recent studies demonstrated that maternal employment was associated with a higher risk of childhood overweight, the evidence remains sparse in Asian countries. We sought to examine the relationship between maternal working hours and early childhood overweight in a rural town in Okayama Prefecture. Methods: In February 2008, questionnaires were sent to parents of all preschool children aged ≥3 yr in the town to assess maternal working status (working hours and form of employment), children’s body mass index, and potential confounders. Childhood overweight was defined following the age and sex-specific criteria of the International Obesity Task Force. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for childhood overweight were estimated in a logistic regression. We used generalized estimating equations with an exchangeable correlation matrix, considering the correlation between siblings. Results: We analyzed 364 preschool children. Adjusting for each child’s characteristics (age, sex), mother’s characteristics (age, obesity, educational attainment, smoking status, and social participation), and family’s characteristics (number of siblings), children whose mothers work Conclusion: Short maternal working hours are associated with a lower odds of early childhood overweight.

In most scientific fields, significant improvements have been made in terms of data sharing among scientists and researchers. Although there are clear benefits to data sharing, there is at least one field where this norm has yet to be developed: the behavioural sciences. In this paper, we propose an innovative methodology as a means to change existing norms within the behavioral sciences and move towards increased data sharing. Based on recent advances in social psychology (e.g., Taylor & de la Sablonnière, 2011), we theorize that a Survey Research Instrument that takes into account basic psychological processes can be effective in promoting data sharing norms.

目的:胸鎖関節には関節円板が存在し,関節円板によって胸鎖関節は球関節の機能を持つとされている。本研究の目的は,胸鎖関節の関節円板を病理組織学的に検討することである。方法:剖検症例において摘出されたヒト胸鎖関節円板を,光学顕微鏡を用いて病理組織学的に観察した。結果:胸鎖関節円板に断裂(tear),粘液様変性(myxoid degeneration),軟骨細胞の集簇化(chondrocyte cloning)等の所見を認めた。また関節円板の表面が,表面にほぼ平行して層状に剥離する像をよく認めた。他の関節円板との比較では,解剖学的,発生学的に関節円板と同一と考えられる膝半月板の病理組織像に関する過去の報告と今回の結果が類似していたが,層状剥離の記述は見られず,これが胸鎖関節に特異的なfibrillationの表現である可能性が示唆された。

The current epidemiological data on radiation carcinogenesis in humans and the biological mechanisms are discussed in this review. It was concluded that a threshold dose for radiation carcinogenesis above order of 1 mSv is an unlikely possibility. The prudent approach in procedures required for justification and optimization should be considered in practice of radiography.
