1874年に翻訳出版された化学入門書『ものわり の はしご』の語彙、特に巻頭の用語解説付録「ことば の さだめ」の見出し項目を分析した。本書は、漢字と漢語を廃し、化学的な現象や物質名を含め、全文を平仮名の和語で訳しており、その語彙分析から主な特徴として次の3点を見出した。(1)和語による造語は、それまでの漢字を用いた造語の流れを汲んでおり、和語でも体系的で簡明な命名が可能である。(2)類義関係にある和語動詞群を使い分けることにより、混同しやすい類似の化学現象を区別して表現できる。(3)漢語よりも和語の方が、現実世界の事象を巧みに言語に写像し命名した例も見られる。つまり本書は、近代の西洋思想を和語で表現し、論旨の通った文章を平仮名で表記できることを、化学の分野で世に示した先駆的実践ということができる。

助詞の「は」と「が」の中には、どちらを選んでも文意に大差がなく、そこから受ける印象だけが異なるものがある。小説をはじめとする文芸作品では、こうした反転可能な「は/が」を、表現技法のひとつとして使い分け、微妙なニュアンス差を伝える事例が観察される。「は/が」の働きの違いを、そこから思い描かれる心象の差異に関連づけて解釈する見方が提案されている。本稿では、「は」を主観的な「寄り」の心象、「が」を客観的な「引き」の心象に対応させて、小説などの情景描写文における「は/が」の働きを検討した。その結果、「は/が」が、作品全体の構成と展開、細部における心象の構図調整、読者の視線誘導や心理操作などの機能を果たしていることを認めた。 Although the Japanese particles WA and GA differ in meaning and usage, occasionally they can convey almost the same meaning, with the only difference being the impression left by the sentence. We can observe many examples in which the rhetorical use of the interchangeable WA / GA particles conveys subtle differences in the meaning of expressions used in literary works such as novels. Some researchers have proposed an explanation of the differences in function between WA and GA, in relation to the imaginary pictures drawn in readers' minds provoked by the two particles. This paper hypothesized that WA corresponds to a subjective close view and GA to an objective distant view, and examined depictive descriptions which contain WA/GA in literary works such as novels. The conclusion was that WA and GA are concerned with the construction and development of the entire story, the detailed compositional adjustment of the story's imagery, the direction of the reader's gaze, and the psychology of the reader.

Background:The MitraClip NT System was approved for marketing in Japan on October 31, 2017, and a prospective, multi-center, single-arm Post-Marketing use Surveillance (PMS) study was launched in 2018. This is the first report of the Japan PMS study with 1-year subject outcomes.Methods and Results:A total of 500 patients were registered between April 2018 and January 2019. Patients with symptomatic chronic moderate-to-severe (3+) or severe mitral regurgitation (MR; 4+), MR with a Society of Thoracic Surgery (STS) replacement score of ≥8%, or presence of 1 pre-defined risk factor were enrolled. Primary outcome measures included acute procedural success (APS), and rate of Single Leaflet Device Attachment (SLDA) at 30 days. The overall cohort was elderly (77.9±9.48 years) with functional MR etiology in 71.6% of the subjects. The majority of subjects were New York Heart Association (NYHA) class III/IV (68.9%), with mean STS replacement score of 11.95±9.66%. The APS rate was 91.13% and the 30-day SLDA rate was 1.21%. Durable MR reduction was achieved with 88.1% of subjects at MR ≤2+ at 1 year. Significant improvement in the functional capacity was observed, with 93% of subjects at NYHA class I/II at 1 year.Conclusions:In the Japan PMS experience, the MitraClip procedure resulted in improvements in MR severity, with significantly improved functional outcomes. These results demonstrate safety and efficacy of MitraClip therapy in the eligible Japanese population.

Background:The SALUTE trial was a prospective, multicenter, single-arm trial to confirm the safety and efficacy of the WATCHMAN left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) device for stroke prevention in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) in Japan.Methods and Results:A total of 54 subjects (including 12 roll-in subjects) with a WATCHMAN implant procedure were followed in 10 investigational centers. Follow-up visits were performed up to 2 years post-implant. The baseline CHA2DS2-VASc score was 3.6±1.6 and the baseline HAS-BLED score was 3.0±1.1. All 42 subjects in the intention to treat (ITT) cohort underwent successful implantation of the LAAC device without any serious complications, achieving the prespecified performance goal. The effective LAAC rate was maintained at 100% from 45 days to 12 months post-implant, achieving the prespecified performance goal. During follow-up, 1 subject died of heart failure, and 3 had ischemic strokes, but there were no cases of hemorrhagic stroke or systemic embolism. All events were adjudicated as unrelated to the WATCHMAN device/procedure by the independent Clinical Events Committee. All 3 ischemic strokes were classified as nondisabling based on no change in the modified Rankin scale score.Conclusions:Final results of the SALUTE trial demonstrated that the WATCHMAN LAAC device is an effective and safe alternative nonpharmacological therapy for stroke risk reduction in Japanese NVAF patients who are not optimal candidates for lifelong anticoagulation. A mass rabies vaccination of dogs has been conducted annually in Japan over the last 60 years. To assess both current levels of rabies virus-neutralizing antibody (VNA) in dogs and the rationale for current vaccination procedures, we used a rapid fluorescent focus inhibition test to determine VNA levels in 756 dogs that had visited animal hospitals in Japan. We found that 51.1% of the dogs that had received 1 rabies vaccination had protective VNA levels (≥0.5 IU/ml) with a geometric mean of 0.61 IU/ml. In contrast, 97.8% of the dogs that had been vaccinated at least twice had protective VNA levels with a geometric mean of 7.86 IU/ml. Furthermore, 97.9–100% of the dogs vaccinated at least twice retained protective VNA levels into the second year after the last vaccination. Although VNA levels in the dogs vaccinated at least twice tended to decline 2 years after the last vaccination, 78.9% retained protective VNA levels. Thus, the current rabies vaccination schedule provides adequate protection, but the registration system and vaccination schedule needs to be improved to ensure that increased numbers of dogs are vaccinated against rabies.

童話「ごんぎつね」の草稿と定稿を中心に、小学校国語教科書に掲載された9種の文章と合わせて計11種類の異本を比較検討した。 視点を示唆する言語指標をもとに分析したところ、(1)草稿と(2)定稿における語りの特徴的な差異として次の3点を確認した。草稿は、(1a)キツネがヒトの村に出て「行く」物語である。(1b)語り手はキツネの側からの「見え」を一定の距離感を保って語り、(1c)伝統的な民話風の語り方がなされる。定稿は、(2a)ヒトの村にキツネが出て「来る」物語である。(2b)語りはヒトからの「見え」を基調とするが、キツネの視線に重ね合わせた語りも交える。(2c)外側と内側から状況に応じた語りを組み合わせ、現代の小説に通じる心理描写がなされる。 教科書は、(3)平成末年の5種と、(4)昭和30~40年代の4種を調査した。(3)平成の教科書は、典拠とする(2)定稿を尊重し、作品をほぼそのまま掲載している。しかし、(2)定稿の特に最終節が、(1)草稿に比べて、視点を示す言語指標に乏しく混乱が生じがちなため、一部の教科書は最終節の段落構成を再編し、読みを誘導している。(4)昭和の教科書は、原典の尊重よりも、視点の整合性や、物語展開の平明さなどの教材性を優先し、改作や圧縮などの加工を施している。

Recently, the antibacterial effects of essential oils have been investigated in addition to their therapeutic purposes. Owing to their hydrophobic nature, they are thought to perturb the integrity of the bacterial cell membrane, leading to cell death. Against such antibiotic challenges, bacteria develop mechanisms for cell envelope stress responses (CESR). In Bacillus subtilis, a gram-positive sporulating soil bacterium, the extracytoplasmic function (ECF) sigma factor-mediated response system plays a pivotal role in CESR. Among them, σM is strongly involved in response to cell envelope stress, including a shortage of available bactoprenol. Vetiver essential oil, a product of Chrysopogon zizanioides (L.) Roberty root, is also known to possess bactericidal activity. σM was exclusively and strongly induced when the cells were exposed to Vetiver extract, and depletion of multi-ECF sigma factors (ΔsigM, ΔsigW, ΔsigX, and ΔsigV) enhanced sensitivity to it. From this quadruple mutant strain, the suppressor strains, which restored resistance to the bactericidal activity of Vetiver extract, emerged, although attempts to obtain resistant strains from the wild type did not succeed. Whole-genome resequencing of the suppressor strains and genetic analysis revealed inactivation of xseB or pnpA, which code for exodeoxyribonuclease or polynucleotide phosphorylase, respectively. This allowed the quadruple mutant strain to escape from cell death caused by Vetiver extract. Composition analysis suggested that the sesquiterpene, khusimol, might contribute to the bactericidal activity of the Vetiver extract.

Background: Transcatheter mitral valve repair with the MitraClip system has been established in selected high-risk patients. The MitraClip procedure results in a relatively large iatrogenic atrial septal defect (iASD). This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and clinical course of iASD requiring transcatheter closure following the MitraClip procedure.Methods and Results: This study was conducted at all 59 institutions that perform transcatheter mitral valve repair with the MitraClip system in Japan. The data of patients on whom transcatheter iASD closure was performed were collected. Of the 2,722 patients who underwent the MitraClip procedure, 30 (1%) required transcatheter iASD closure. The maximum iASD size was 9±4 mm (range, 3–18 mm). The common clinical course of transcatheter iASD closure was hypoxemia with right-to-left shunt or right-sided heart failure with left-to-right shunt. Of the 30 patients, 22 (73%) required transcatheter closure within 24 h following the MitraClip procedure, including 12 with hypoxemia and 5 with right-sided heart failure complicated with cardiogenic shock. Of the 5 patients, 2 required mechanical circulatory support devices. Twenty-one patients immediately underwent transcatheter iASD closure, and hemodynamic deteriorations were resolved; however, 1 patient died without having undergone transcatheter closure.Conclusions: Transcatheter iASD closure was required in 1% of patients who underwent the MitraClip procedure. Many of these patients immediately underwent transcatheter iASD closure because of hypoxemia with right-to-left shunt or right-sided heart failure with left-to-right shunt.

To investigate the gene function of radish (Raphanus sativus L.), several attempts have been made to generate genetically transformed radish. However, no efficient and relatively simple method for the genetic transformation of radish has been developed to date. In this study, we established an Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation method using the hypocotyl-derived explants of radish cultivar “Pirabikku”. Primarily based on the Brassica transformation procedure, we optimized it for radish transformation. Using this system, the transformation efficiency of radish hypocotyl explants by Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain GV3101 harboring pIG121-Hm was 13.3%. The copy number of transfer DNA integrated into the genome was either one or two in the four independent transgenic plants. Two of the four plants exhibited male sterility and did not produce self-pollinated seeds. Examination of the expression of the β-glucuronidase (GUS) gene in T1 plants from fertile T0 plants showed that the GUS genes were inherited. The improvement in the genetic transformation in this study might pave the way for accelerated molecular breeding and genetic analysis of radish.

トリプトファンとペルオキシナイトライトを反応させてからすぐに逆相HPLCで分離させ,ニトロソ化物,ニトロシル化物等不安定な物質を同定することや,前報でトリプトファンの方がチロシンよりも未確認の生成物が多く検出されたということから,これらの未確認生成物を同定することを目的として,実験を進めた。その結果,キヌレニン,7-ニトロトリプトファン,6-ニトロトリプトファン,4-ニトロトリプトファン,5-ニトロトリプトファンが確認された。また,反応直後と数日後の比較から,報告にあるニトロソ化物,ニトロシル化物以外の,不安定な生成物が確認された。

明治の初めから半ばにかけて、心学道話を日本語学習用に加工した教材が相次いで出版された。この時期は、上方語の威信が失墜し、それに代わり東京語に基づく標準的な日本語が形成されていく時期と重なる。小稿は『鳩翁道話』や『心学道の話』を素材とする教材5種の調査をした。両素材は講述筆録であるため話し言葉を学ぶのに向く反面、幕末の刊行で上方語の特徴が濃厚なため新時代の標準モデルにふさわしくない面もある。これら要注意な表現に対し、各教材は注釈を加えたり、上方的でない表現を本文に選ぶなどの処置をとっている。各教材の上方語に対する姿勢は刊行時期によって異なる。早い時期の教材は、東西の言語的な差異を念頭におきつつも、上方語を依然有力な同時代語と捉えている。いっぽう刊行時期が遅くなると、東京語に重心が移りそこを基軸に、距離をおいて上方語を観察する姿勢に変わる。西から東への言語規範の推移は、表面的には刷新に見えるが、根幹においては継承であることを、教材編者ら見識ある非母語話者は心得ていた。そのため旧来の素材からでも新時代に対応しうる言語形式を吸収できたのである。

As device sizes are downscaled to nanometer, Random Telegraph Noise (RTN) becomes dominant. It is indispensable to accurately estimate the effect of RTN. We propose an RTN simulation method for analog circuits. It is based on the charge trapping model. The RTN-induced threshold voltage fluctuation are replicated to attach a variable DC voltage source to the gate of a MOSFET by using Verilog-AMS. In recent deca-nanometer processes, high-k (HK) materials are used in gate dielectrics to decrease the leakage current. We must consider the defect distribution characteristics both in HK and interface layer (IL). This RTN model can be applied to the bimodal model which includes characteristics of the HK and IL dielectrics. We confirm that the drain current of MOSFETs temporally fluctuates in circuit-level simulations. The fluctuations of RTN are different in MOSFETs. RTN affects the frequency characteristics of ring oscillators (ROs). The distribution of RTN-induced frequency fluctuations has a long-tail in a HK process. The RTN model applied to the bimodal can replicate a long-tail distribution. Our proposed method can estimate the temporal impact of RTN including multiple transistors.

During apple (Malus × domestica Borkh.) storage, a loss in fruit firmness can occur. This is frequently associated with mealiness, an undesirable trait. There have been studies, such as phenotypic analyses and transcriptomics, as well as others employing a transgenic approach, focusing on this trait. Certain genetic approaches, such as quantitative trait loci (QTL) approach, however, have not been attempted. In this study, to identify and characterize QTLs controlling flesh mealiness and to investigate their application in apple breeding, we performed classical QTL mapping based on a bi-parental population and a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of mealiness. Phenotypic data for mealiness allowed us to identify two QTLs in the bi-parental family located on linkage group 10. The GWAS discovered significant marker-trait associations on chromosomes 2, 9, and 10. The MdPG1 locus, located on chromosome 10, was identified as the locus with the strongest significance by both QTL mapping and GWAS, suggesting its primary contribution to flesh mealiness. Using a tri-allelic simple sequence repeat marker, Md-PG1SSR10kd, 10 kb downstream of the MdPG1 coding sequence, we divided apple accessions into six groups based on their genotypes. Among the six groups, the Md-PG1SSR10kd genotype “2/2” had the least mealy phenotype.

Soybean [Glycine max (L) Merrill] is one of the most important leguminous crops and ranks fourth after to rice, wheat and maize in terms of world crop production. Soybean contains abundant protein and oil, which makes it a major source of nutritious food, livestock feed and industrial products. In Japan, soybean is also an important source of traditional staples such as tofu, natto, miso and soy sauce. The soybean genome was determined in 2010. With its enormous size, physical mapping and genome sequencing are the most effective approaches towards understanding the structure and function of the soybean genome. We constructed bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) libraries from the Japanese soybean cultivar, Enrei. The end-sequences of approximately 100,000 BAC clones were analyzed and used for construction of a BAC-based physical map of the genome. BLAST analysis between Enrei BAC-end sequences and the Williams82 genome was carried out to increase the saturation of the map. This physical map will be used to characterize the genome structure of Japanese soybean cultivars, to develop methods for the isolation of agronomically important genes and to facilitate comparative soybean genome research. The current status of physical mapping of the soybean genome and construction of database are presented.
